I’ve been struggling with adrenal fatigue for a few years, and then just about complete adrenal depletion to the point of my cortisol dropping for the last year. It’s been hard. Vomiting in the mornings and any time I get stressed hard. MRI’s because my hormones are so messed up that we needed to check for a pituitary tumor hard. Rashes because my kidneys don’t always filter my toxins hard. Diagnosed with sleep deprivation hard. Brain so foggy I couldn’t drive most of the time hard.

You get it. Hard.

So I’ve worked just as hard to get my body working again. Improving my sleep patterns. Using pressure points to reduce stress by physiological stimulation. Nourishing my adrenals with adaptogen herbs. Combining the right herbs with the right vitamins to increase my body’s metabolism of estrogen and to stimulate production of glutathione (Your mother antioxidant. Look it up.). Being gentle on myself. Cutting back on my responsibilities in life. Changing how I eat to avoid sugar, refined carbs, and increasing healthy fats to nourish my nervous system. Using essential oils to support my body and mind. Using supplements to boost my antioxidant levels.

And it’s working!

I still have days when I’m not feeling well, and I still have to be very conscious about my stress levels…but I’m not vomiting, I’m not tremoring, I’m not stuttering, and I’ve began losing weight instead of gaining weight.

Serious, late stage adrenal insufficiency can be so tough. Not just to function, but to figure out how to treat and to follow through in doing it when you are THAT sick!

One of the simple things I’ve done is change my breakfast habits. I used to eat a “healthy” dry boxed cereal (I know, I know…and if you don’t know, dry cereal is pretty much not something that’s actually nourishing or sustaining your body when you eat it.), almond milk, and [natural but still contained sugar] chai tea concentrate mixed with almond milk. I loved that breakfast.

But. Alas, I love being alive more than I love cereal and chai lattes, so I broke up with my beloved breakfast and invented this following drink instead. It’s now my breakfast every single day. It’s fast and easy to make, AND you can even premix the dry ingredients to save yourself time every morning! My kids enjoy it, and it is packed full of real ingredients that are nourishing, healing, hormone balancing, inflammation reducing, immune boosting, and energy giving. It’s also full of fat, thanks to the raw coconut oil, so it keeps you full longer, and provides fatty acids that are essential to brain function!

Keto friendly. Low carb friendly. Real food friendly. Adrenal fatigue friendly. Tastebud friendly. Budget friendly. Mom-schedule friendly.

Meet my new beloved breakfast: Bulletproof Turmeric Hot Chocolate!

Do you see that goodness in there? The creaminess? The rich chocolate? The yellow specks of turmeric?! Yeah, goodness.

So here is the recipe:

1 Cup Milk (I use almond)

1 TBS chia seeds

1 TBS raw cacao powder

1 tsp raw maca powder

1 TBS of raw coconut oil

Non sugar sweetener to taste (I use 1 tsp of a Stevia powder blend–see below)

Pinch of Himalayan salt (there’s like 82 minerals in here, folks!)

Dash or two of Turmeric

Pinch of black pepper

Two dashes of cinnamon

Instructions:
Whisk everything together in small saucepan and heat over medium heat until warm. The chia seeds expand as they heat and sit in the liquid, so the longer you allow to sit, the thicker it will get. If you are like my husband and don’t care for the chia “beads” as they expand, just throw them in a blender to make them into a powder before making the recipe!

Let me know how you liked this drink, and also how your health is after you’ve been drinking it for a while! The ingredients are awesome for anyone with adrenal issues, low energy, who need a stable blood sugar (if you use a non glycemic spiking sweetener), and anyone who just wants to increase and invest in their health.

One of the things I commonly (AKA all the time) see, is people wasting time with how they do business work online. Everything from counting hundreds of contest entries to writing the same response of information to someone over and over and over. What is it costing you? A tremendous amount of time. Time that you aren’t spending gaining new customers, getting the word out there, or following up with folks. And you can forget having time to develop anything new!

But that’s all about to change. Give me a #highfive in the comments after you find something in this list that’s going to take your hours of busy work and turn them into minutes, ok?

5. Fiverr. Here you can find high quality logos, YouTube style video intro’s and outro’s, print designs, content writers, and really anything else you could need to brand and present your business. You can even buy potential customer email address lists. Best of all? You can get what you need for $5. And a turn around time of three days. Really. Literally. It’s unbelievable, but true. Make an account right now: http://www.fiverr.com

4. Rafflecopter. They say they are “the world’s easiest way to run a giveaway.” And they are. Stop counting contest entries! Use a LINK instead that gathers all the info you need, provides multiple ways for people to earn entries (sharing your contest? Liking a comment? Leaving a comment? Subscribing to something?), and then will even pick the winner for you. The best part, other than saving you hours of brain draining time? You can collect EMAILS to filter into your email list! Woo-hoo! You’ll also be able to compare all of your giveaway campaigns so you can figure out what days/times/products/entries reach the most people. Go now and experience the magic: http://www.rafflecopter.com

3. Surveymonkey. I’m sure you’ve used this at some point in the past as a customer, but are you using it for market research or information collection for yourself yet? If not, you should consider it. They’ve come a long way from simply offering blank canvases where you created your own content, to pre-designed survey templates and customizing options that allow you to add your logo and choose colors to keep with your branding. There is even an “A vs. B” survey randomization option so that you can compare the answers for two different styles of survey! If you don’t know what this is and aren’t sure it can benefit you, shoot me a message. It’s a psychological study tool that could be of great advantage to you as you research or plan marketing campaigns. The point is this–stop asking people the questions you need to get answers to, and send them to a survey instead. Have fun designing: http://www.surveymonkey.com

2. Leadpages. You know how you are always trying to give your elevator speech and then capture information, but you end up sending someone to your full website or a random page off of your blog, or maybe you don’t have anywhere at all to send them, so you just spill too much information and they get scared and run away? Meet Leadpages. It’s pricey, yes, but the conversion rate will skyrocket for you when you have a good lead page to send someone to. What’s a lead page? In short, it’s a simple, one page website you send someone to that provides enough information + an incentive (free PDF download? Exclusive video content? More information?) for them to provide their information to you. The give you their email address, they click a button, and whola. Now you have your lead and they have more content. The research shows that you NEED a lead page if you are offering an online service (coaching? information marketing? business opportunity?) and want conversions (aka, if you want people to sign up for what you’re offering). Be brilliant: http://www.leadpages.net).

1. ez texting. Ever wonder how hard or expensive it would be to add text message services to your clients? Guess what! It’s not hard, and it’s not expensive, and the rate at which it’s going to turn your sales, leads, and outcomes is high. This particular provider offers multiple different plans (starting at the no-monthly-fee one which only costs $0.05 for every message you send), and services like scheduled messages, free unlimited messages that people send you, voice messages, and even DRIP CAMPAIGNS. This is like the biggest time saver in the world. Seriously, stop trying to run your own text campaigns. It’s way too much time. Run to this one instead: http://www.eztexting.com

These five business hacks will save you time, increase your professional appearance, and help you streamline your business practices. If you aren’t streamlining everything possible, you aren’t fulfilling your potential!

Taking time…it’s a concept that floats around us in our busy lives. Taking time to stop. Taking time to listen. Taking time. It means we are being intentional. Purposeful. Focused. Right?

It’s also a phrase that conveys action. We are taking–seizing–time. Why does this matter? It matters because if we are not intentional, purposed, and focused on seizing time, it literally does slip away between our fingers and vaporizes before we can even breathe it in. Time transcends the physical world. We cannot grasp it unless we are determined to, and even with determination, the only way we can capture it is if we do so forcefully.

Time cannot be ordered to be stopped, but we can order it to be controlled in how it moves and what it takes with it.

The last few months, I needed my life to stop rapidly flowing through Time. So I took time. I stopped and let time just sit. Me and it. Staring at each other. I’d met the end of what I could do with Time swirling around me, ebbing itself on faster and faster as the energy took me with it as though Time were one of those teacup amusement park rides where the only way to survive is to let yourself go with the force. I couldn’t go with the force anymore. I needed to get off.

Time shifted for me on June 19, 2012. It stopped that day. It was the day I learned that something very bad had happened to my family, and I spent the next few years learning how to breathe and fight and sacrifice myself for the survival of others 24 hours a day. For years. And it’s okay. I’m okay with that, because it was needed and I absolutely would do it again without hesitation. But after a few years of living like that, Time just creates this dark swirling vacuum of space, like the tunnel that everyone travels through in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. You can’t exist in that state forever, because Time goes too fast and makes you feel like you’re drowning. You can’t keep up without rest. Without taking Time.

That’s why my posts grew more and more infrequent. Why I didn’t talk about what we went through when we were going through it. Any moment I had that was not spent on something related to that day, I couldn’t spend on anything related to that. I couldn’t give it any more time. I needed any moment of fresh, life filled air that I could grasp so that I could keep going.

Have you been there? Have you needed Time?

In December, I decided I’d had enough. My heart and mind couldn’t hold any more. So I stepped away from responsibilities that weren’t necessary. I made the hard decision to let go of things that were heavy just for that reason alone–they were heavy. I stopped using my personal Facebook account. I paused my business. I enrolled my kids in school. I cut contact with people who were unkind. I started Taking Time.

And here I am. Not better yet, but I’m here. I’m peaceful. I’m intentionally moving slowly toward using my time again. Intentionally. With focus, purpose, and while being very careful.

Time doesn’t come back to us. So instead of letting it take me, I’m taking It.

I took my youngest to the doctor this morning for recurrent fevers and headaches…no other complaints…and then out of nowhere, she developed croup an hour later.

I moved her from the couch to my bed. A noise woke her at one point, and in a croupy-whisper-panicked sort of way, she asked me to stay with her and not leave her.

I was going to be the cool homeschool mom today, and I had everything planned and packed to do all learning in the State Park woods. The picnic lunch was already in the car. And then this hit. And then I found out a bill I had scheduled to pay didn’t in fact pay itself and now it’s late. And then the house was making me want to set it on fire because the mess was infuriating me. And the big kids weren’t listening even though I made their math into a game.

And then in the midst of my horrible failure “why me, I was meant to be a doctor or neuropsychologist or anything but this” negative brain spiral, this little voice begged me to not leave her alone.

She’s sleeping again. She won’t know if I am in the next room cleaning, or if I’m writing checks, or if I’m drill sargenting her siblings. But I would know. She asked me to stay next to her.

Just one sentence. It can change everything.

I told the big kids I trusted them to learn. I left them with poems to read and instructions to create a research project on The Nutcracker. And I’m parked on the bed, next to a 4-year-old who has my entire heart wrapped around hers. I’m not moving.

It’s hard to lose yourself to parenting. But it’s beautiful when you can find yourself in it, too. I don’t know who I am anymore, but she knows my heart, and it’s good enough for her to want it next to her.

I got really excited a few months ago when a grocery store came into the town 30-minutes from me–the town I have to travel to if I don’t want to buy groceries at Dollar General (I didn’t know that was even a thing until I moved here). Walmart and one other grocery store was all that I had to choose from, and I knew this third option was supposed to be a “discount” grocery store.

I walked in, grabbed a cart, and walked in like a boss. Smiling, chin up, and with a saunter behind that shiny new metal box on wheels. I walked down the first aisle. And the second. And the third. Then I jumped to the outskirts, because I hadn’t found anything to put in my cart yet, and the outskirt is where the healthy food is supposed to be, right?

Eggs. Milk. Cheese. That is literally all I could find of “real” food in the store. So I put eggs in my cart. And a brick of cheese in the cart. I didn’t even know what was in the boxes that lined every shelf in the store from top to bottom. I’d never eaten or bought these instant-type meals before. So, I picked up a box. It had preservatives that are in skincare (I know, because I avoid those things on my skin). It had plastics. Why are there plastics in our food? And WHY were other people putting these things in their carts? I was confused. And shocked. So I ran full speed ahead when I saw a gentleman pick up the unsuspecting box with no living food in it, knocked it out of his hands, pointed through my breathlessness at the ingredient list, and then he thanked me profusely before I checked out and left. Okay, the last part didn’t happen. But I did check my cheese and eggs out, and I never returned.

How did we get from eating real food, to preparing cheap boxes of who knows what, and not only buying it, but eating it and thinking that is normal? How did living food become a luxury, something we have to be intentional about, something we have to think about, something we have to begrudgingly force ourselves to incorporate into our lives and put in our bodies–our living, breathing bodies?!

Real, live, raw foods contain enzymes that our bodies need, prebiotics, minerals, vitamins, fiber…really, really important building blocks for health and life. Raw vegetable/fruit diets are researched to literally cure all sorts of problems, including cancer. So why aren’t we eating hardly any raw foods? Maybe because we see it as time consuming, expensive, and difficult. I’m not perfect at this, but man, am I trying! Here are some ideas to help make it easier, more accessible, and more interesting for us all.

Just do it. Literally, just make yourself start adding salads, veggie sticks, and whole fruits into your meals and snacks.

Change the shape of what you’re eating. Scrape down one end of a carrot to turn it into a point–your kids will love you. Julienne your summer squashes, cucumbers, or carrots (Pampered Chef sells a handy dandy julienne peeler). Put your summer squash through a spiralizer. Thinly slice your onions. So many options! Just changing the density and shape can make vegetables more appealing to eat.

Add herbs and spices. You’d be amazed at what some butter or ghee, and rosemary, thyme, basil, and garlic can do to fresh or frozen peas. Not only that, but they had nutritional and medicinal value to your food!

Brown butter with a single fresh herb and pour that over lightly cooked veggies. A winter squash with 4 TBS browned butter/8 thinly sliced fresh sage leaves is FAST to make, and tastes DELICIOUS.

Do monthly or weekly cooking and freeze things. While you’re at it, dice up veggies and freeze them together, too. It’ll make a fast and easy go to for topping pizzas, making omelets, and more.

Juice. You can pack A. LOT. of fresh fruits and veggies into a glass of juice. Mix and match or follow recipes.

Remember–cook your fruits and veggies as little as possible to retain as much nutritional value as possible. Get creative. Don’t let it sit in your fridge and rot. And just. do. it.

With today’s society, most of direct sales marketing information is geared toward reaching a crowd on Facebook.
…but what if you want a reach outside of Facebook algorithms? What if you want a different audience? What if your friends don’t want to be pestered all the time by your wrap, pink drink, lipstick, or the fact that you “earn money while relaxing on the beach” (and seriously, don’t say that–that’s not what you’re doing, and not the type of entrepreneurs owners you want to attract in your downline). What if…gasp…you don’t have a Facebook account?!

As a Recreation Therapist and mom to a child with intense emotional challenges, I am a huge advocate of using play based tools to help children understand, process, and appropriately respond to their emotions. Not only is this helpful for the child and those surrounding that child, but it also goes hand in hand with identifying and appropriately responding to the emotions that others are expressing. Here are my four steps to helping children with their emotions, and the tools you need to do so.

Give the emotions a name. Identification is the first step in properly expressing our own emotions, and in having empathy toward the emotions of others. Resource – My Big Barefoot Book of Wonderful Words has an awesome two-page spread that covers a huge variety of emotions so that your child can identify what he or she, or another person may be feeling.

Work through scenarios, and practice expressing how YOU feel. Children naturally do this through play, particularly through imaginative play like with a dollhouse and dolls. Resource– Create A Story Cards is a beautiful deck of 46 picture cards.
Practice working with others. This opens up communication, helps build respect of others, and literally builds the skill of working in cooperation with others. Resource– there are MANY cooperative games on the Barefoot Books website.
I have such a passion for birth and postpartum. I’ve had the privilege of giving birth to my own children, two via waterbirths where I was able to catch my babies myself, and the last via a home birth, and I have also been able to be the lone person assisting two mothers during their births while working as a paramedic.

As an herbalist, certified doula, Sacred Pregnancy Mini Retreat instructor, and traditional postpartum care provider, I feel that providing expecting mamas with the information on using herbs and essential oils to assist them from pregnancy through motherhood is extremely valuable. I also believe that it is of the utmost importance that women are instructed on the correct and safe use of herbs and essential oils during these times, especially.

Unfortunately, there is much incorrect information available via the Internet and even printed books, which can cause both harm and a lack of proper effect for the women using these methods. Hence, where I come in! This is the first of what will be a series of educational pieces devoted specifically to pregnancy, birthing, and postpartum to help you know exactly how to safely and effectively use natural plant based tools to assist your well being as you grow little humans, bring them into the world, and then help your own body re-balance itself to a non-pregnant state.

Using essential oils safely during labor and birth

You CAN use essential oils to assist you during labor and birth! Knowing which ones are safe, and how to safely use them is the key here. Having a basic understanding of how they work during pregnancy and birthing is important, so that you don’t get into a situation that you don’t want to be in. Before you begin using essential oils, it’s important to educate yourself on the basics. I offer a free class that is free to the first 100 participants on both Essential Oils AND Herbs– click here to sign up! All information from here on out in this article assumes that you have taken my Essential Oils and Herbs 101 Course or that you have equivalent knowledge.

Prepare your oils and blends before hand, label them, and have them in your birth bag. My top three essential oil targets are: a labor support blend (overall support for pain, nausea, and emotional stamina), a stalled labor blend (to help things progress if your body is ready), and a bleeding reduction blend (to be used prior to birth, but that can also be applied postpartum).

Work with your care provider. Find someone that is knowledgeable about using natural methods to support labor, and listen to them.

There are various ways to administer essential oils. During labor and birthing, the only ways that I recommend would be topically (diluted appropriately), and on a cloth that the mother can hold near her face to smell (or via personal inhaler).

Do not put oils in the birthing water. Why? Because you don’t want essential oils to directly contact the baby during birth, and you don’t want to risk experiencing a dermal irritation yourself. A great alternative to this, if approved by your care provider, is a sachet of herbs in your bath water.

Do not diffuse oils in the birthing room. Why? Because you don’t want to risk that one of your care providers is sensitive to the oils you are diffusing, and you also don’t want to put yourself in a position that you cannot have the scent removed from you if YOU become irritated by it. When pregnant, it’s common to become nauseous by things that didn’t used to make you ill, and it’s also common to find a particular scent helpful one moment, but not helpful the next. Do not put yourself in a position that you can’t get away from the essential oil if you need to. Using a personal inhaler, or putting the oil on a cloth and holding it near your face so you can breathe it in gives you the benefit of those oils, and also gives you the control to be able to remove the oils from yourself if you need to. Additionally, you don’t want a newborn exposed to essential oils in the air as it can cause respiratory problems.

Do not apply essential oils to neonates or newborns. They do not have the ability to process substances like older humans do yet, and they are at increased risk of dermal irritation and organ sensitivity, as well as respiratory irritation and problems. Essential oils are extremely powerful–that’s why they work so quickly and completely! Imagine your liver not being able to process everything yet, and having those molecules built up in you that you can’t handle! When you apply an essential oil to the skin, it has been shown to penetrate every cell in the body in about 20 minutes, and is detectable in the bloodstream only 22 seconds after application. Wait until your children are older to use essential oils on them. \

You CAN use essential oils on yourself after birth to support you during your third stage of labor (placenta delivery) and in the immediate postpartum stage (to reduce bleeding, assist with pain, help your hormones and emotions balance, etc.). Just be sure to not apply on areas of your body that your newborn’s face would be near.

I hope that these guidelines are helpful as you prepare for the birth of your baby, and that you can walk into your birth room with confidence!

Black Drawing Salve is a must have for your home First Aid kit. It’s an awesome herbal product that has a rich history of being used to “draw” things out of the body. The ingredients give it detoxification properties, so it can be used any time that you feel the need to detoxify or draw out something from the body. Safe for all ages and conditions, it is applied to the skin, covered with a bandage to keep it on and from staining clothing. I like to reapply every twelve hours or so until the condition is improved and the body restored to its normal balance.

As for how easy this is to make, I would say that it’s an intermediate herbal project because it requires multiple steps. Even if you haven’t made anything with herbs or essential oils before, this can be a great place to start and will teach you multiple things about making your own natural body care products!

Ingredients
2 TBS Beeswax
3 TBS Cocoa Butter
3 TBS Shea Butter
2 TBS Olive Oil infused with Calendula, Plantain, and Comfrey Root (I will post instructions for making herbal infused oil tomorrow!)
1 TBS vitamin E oil
1 TBS Honey Powder
2 TBS Activated Charcoal Powder
3 TBS Rhassoul Clay
20 drops Lavender Essential Oil (find out how to order the pure and safe essential oil I buy at wholesale prices in http://tinyurl.com/holisticmamas)

Instructions
Put all oils and beeswax together, and melt over medium-high heat until melted. Let it sit (burner off) and cool, but not to point that it’s hardening–generally about 15 minutes. If it starts to harden, just reheat until it’s all liquid again. Add the rest of the ingredients except the Lavender essential oil, and stir well. Lastly, when the mixture is not so hot that it will burn you, but when it’s not so cold that it’s solidifying, add the Lavender essential oil and pour into jars to cool for several hours.

To use, slab enough of the Drawing Salve to create a thick paste on the spot that you want it to work on. Cover it with a bandage to keep it on and to keep it from staining your clothing. Reapply as needed. For external use only. Do not apply to broken skin.

It took a few disastrous tries to perfect my bath bomb recipe. I had bomb explosions as my bombs grew…and grew…and grew…in the hours that I left them to try. A few recipes and my own tweeks later (plus a few hours invested in bath time chemistry), *I’ve got it.* An all natural, big, luxurious bath bomb that not only looks good and smells good, but is therapeutic, as well.

Oh, and they’re hard-as-a-rock. Which, if you’ve already tried making bath bombs, you know that is the holy grail of bath bomb making. Now, before you assume following this recipe will also give you hard-as-a-rock bombs, know that the experience of recipes seem to differ in various geographical locations and also on the humidity level of the day you make your bombs. So if this doesn’t work at first for you, consider that, and make your own tweeks until you also have a perfect hard-as-a-rock recipe. But, of course, I want to know if *this* was also your perfect recipe, too, so let me know in the comments after you make them!

Ingredients:

3 cups Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda)
1.5 cups Citric Acid
1/4 cup Cornstarch
4 TBS Coconut Oil
2 TBS Cream of Tarter
1 TBS Raw Mango Butter
80 drops Essential Oil Blend of (adjust if you use different oils than I’m using- note that using a different amount, blend, or brand may lead to a different result for your bath bombs, and the therapeutic benefit will also be different): Wild Orange Peel, Lemon Peel, Grapefruit Peel, Mandarin Peel, Bergamot Peel, Tangerine Peel, Clementine Peel essential oils and Vanilla Bean Absolute. This is not 80 drops of each of these oils–I am using a bottle of an essential oil blend that ALREADY blended these various oils into the perfect ratio, and I use 80 drops total out of the bottle. To find out where I get this exact essential oil blend I used for these bombs, to ask questions about this recipe, or to learn more about the ingredients, join my private holistic learning Facebook group at http://tinyurl.com/holisticmamas.

*other ingredients can be purchased through Mountain Rose Herbs (affiliate link-thank you for supporting me so I can bring you more great content!).

Instructions:

Mix all dry ingredients together in a bowl.

Heat coconut oil and mango butter until just melted.

Stir essential oils into the melted oils mixture.

Mix melted oils into the dry ingredients until well combined.

Overfill each half of the bath bomb mold, pack mold together as tightly as possible. Tap outisdes of mold before separating (some people tap with a spoon, I just use my fingers so I don’t dent my mold).

Place bath bomb on a dry surface to fully harden (may take hours or two days, depending on your humidity level).

To use, fill a bathtub (or a bucket if you just want to soak your feet), drop the bomb in, and enjoy the magic! Be careful getting in and out of the tub as it may be slippery. Also, use sunscreen or avoid direct sunlight for about 12 hours after using this bath bomb as the essential oils in it can make you more sensitive to sunlight. This is safe for older children and adults to use. If you experience a skin sensitivity, immediately discontinue use and wipe affected area with a carrier oil until irritation subsides, then wash with water and soap.

Benefits:

Obviously, this is going to smell like Heaven, feel super soft on your skin, and nourish your body with the coconut oil, mango butter, and baking soda! The essential oil blend I used is of particular interested because it both cleanses and purifies, but it also impacts your emotional state. It helps reduce stress, uplift your mood, and has energizing and refreshing properties. You can see why I call this my “Summertime” bath bomb!
