So far, I have reviewed the first 80 Data Sufficiency Sample Questions. I will continue to review 40 additional Data Sufficiency questions until I understand all 155 questions. In addition, on a daily basis, I will review all of the previous questions. For example, today, I reviewed the first 80 Data Sufficiency Sample Questions. Tomorrow, I will review the first 120 questions.

What is the point of this Data Sufficiency strategy? In previous posts, I had identified Data Sufficiency questions as hindrance to my future GMAT success. Besides, I am studying EZ Solutions: Basic Workbook: GMAT to help me to better understand the type of Problem Solving questions that I might see on the GMAT.
Believe me! Studying for the Verbal section is important, even if I do not mention Critical Reasoning, Sentence Correction, and Reading Comprehension in every post. To be honest, I am focused on studying Idioms, which is my number one mistake on Sentence Correction questions. I have found that studying the Idioms list of the Manhattan GMAT Prep: Sentence Correction book and Manhattan Review: Sentence Correction Guide to be helpful.

By the end of October, I will take the GMAT. Over the next 30 days, my life is going to be hell. I will ask myself to give more effort than I have ever given. I just want an opportunity to help me to get to the next level in the business world.

Since my last post, I have been trying to solve every problem in EZ Solutions: Math Practice: Basic Workbook: GMAT. I know I was stunned by my last Quantitative score on the Manhattan GMAT Cat 4, but I think it was fluke. Nevertheless, my challenge over the next 2 weeks is to become proficient in math. I do not want to rely on the luck of the draw when I take the GMAT.

I have not forgotten about the Verbal section. I am using the Manhattan Review as my main source of study. The practice questions are not easy. Actually, the questions are as difficult as the 600-800 level questions that you will find on the Manhattan GMAT Cats. Please be aware that Manhattan Review and Manhattan GMAT are two different companies.

Do not force yourself to take a GMAT practice exam, especially at 11:30pm. But I wanted to keep my word. Last week, I stated that I would begin taking a GMAT practice test on a daily basis.

Now, I am faced with a dilemma. Will individuals that follow my blog distrust me if I stop taking practice exams until next week? Hopefully, the answer to the previous question is no. Yesterday, my Quantitative Section score on Manhattan GMAT Practice CAT #4 was dreadful. Actually, I scored at the 19th percentile. An undergraduate program may not accept me with that score. I honestly believe some graduate business schools would question my sanity if I sent them my application.

My overall score on the Manhattan GMAT Practice CAT was 540. My Verbal Section scored was at the 85th percentile. I made only three Sentence Correction errors. I completed Manhattan GMAT Practice CAT at 2AM; I would have started by 7:30PM, but I was at a Church meeting.

Until further notice, I will be reviewing all of the previous Manhattan GMAT Practice CATs that I have completed; in addition, I will be completing the EZ Solutions Basic Workbook (GMAT). Let’s pray that the EZ Solutions Advanced Workbook (GMAT) arrives tomorrow. Time is running out! Where did my math skills go?

I know that my plan to “Beat the GMAT” sounds risky. I concur with you. However, I wanted to use this week to focus on the Verbal Section of the GMAT. I believe some of my poor performances on GMAT practice tests are a result of not understanding the scope of the questions, especially in the Verbal Section.

As a result of my GMAT malaise, I decided to review the GMAT Verbal Study Guide that I had recently purchased through GMATCAT.com. I found many helpful tips within the study guide. The Reading Comprehension Section was extremely helpful: Find the main idea, find the scope, and recognize the author’s tone. The Critical Reasoning Section dissected some questions using Deductive Logic, so I needed to pull out my truth table from my undergraduate years! The Sentence Correction Section identified a major weakness, understanding appositives.

Please be aware that I am not compensated by any of the GMAT study guide companies that I mention in my posts. Next, I will be studying the Math Study Guide that I had purchased through GMATCAT.com. By next Tuesday, I will start taking a practice exam each day, except for a few vacation days that I have planned in September.

I still went to work. Trust me; I probably needed to stay in bed. My body was aching from a slight fever. I hate having cold symptoms. However, don’t worry; I bought some orange juice, for it usually gets rid of my cold symptoms.

Last night, I was unable to review the Data Sufficiency practice quiz of Kaplan’s GMAT Premier Program 2008 Edition Book. I was too tired. Today, I felt sick, but I reviewed all 50 quiz questions. In my previous post, I mentioned that I had missed 20 questions out of the 50 question practice quiz. I legitimately missed 6 questions. I also missed 14 questions because of lack of attention. I make no excuses for my poor performance, but I was extremely tired. As a result, I will probably take a vacation day the day before taking the GMAT.

Things have to get better if I plan to “Beat the GMAT.”

In American classrooms, from the age of 5, students are taught to solve math problems. Data Sufficiency questions on the GMAT do not ask you to solve the math problem. Instead, Data Sufficiency questions ask if you have enough information to solve the math problem. Basically, do you have the baking ingredients to make a chocolate cake? That last comment was probably a bad analogy. The following is an example of a Data Sufficiency question that could appear on a GMAT Practice Test: Is M an even number less than 12? Then you will be presented with two statements - 1. M is also divisible by 4 and 6, and 2. M is also the square root of a positive integer. There are 5 choices for each question: Statement (1) is sufficient, but statement (2) is not sufficient; statement (2) is sufficient, but statement (1) is not sufficient; both statements together are sufficient, but neither statement alone is sufficient; each statement alone is sufficient; or statement (1) and (2) together are not sufficient. Your job is to choose the correct answer among the 5 choices. Someone solve this problem and share the answer in the comments section, unless you want to e-mail me at president@financial-shopper-network.com.

Today, I completed the Data Sufficiency Section of Kaplan’s GMAT Premier Program 2008 Edition Book. This book provides several examples of Data Sufficiency questions; however, those explanations may not be understandable for everyone studying the material. I advise that you attempt each question a few times before reading the explanation, if you are struggling to find the correct answer. After reading the Data Sufficiency Section, I completed the 50 question practice quiz. I struggled to finish the 50 questions. My score reflected my poor performance.
Data Sufficiency Practice Quiz Score: 30/50 (60%)

My understanding of Geometry appears to be improving; unfortunately, Geometry is still my weakest area of math. Nevertheless, my confidence in my math ability has improved. I approached each question with a hungry desire to master its logic. Furthermore, I realized that I made few mental mistakes while taking the practice quiz. However I missed 3 questions because of lack of attention to details. I really don’t have much more to say about problem solving.

Tomorrow will be a challenge, for I will do battle with Data Sufficiency, which in my opinion is the strangest form of math on the planet. However, my love affair with math hit a sour note in high school. Geometry kicked my butt. In college, I was a decent Statistics’ student. But, at age 32, I have recaptured my love of math, for I now refer to it as my “Holy Grail.” You probably are wondering why my love of math has reappeared! To be honest, studying for the GMAT has recaptured my logical imagination. I love math, even when the problem is hard!

I apologize for the rant. Today, I read the Problem Solving Section of Kaplan’s GMAT Premier Program 2008 Edition Book. If you are not familiar with this workbook, the Problem Solving Section explains how future GMAT students must approach math problems that are not Data Sufficiency questions. At this point, do not worry about Data Sufficiency, if you are not familiar with the term; I will be discussing Data Sufficiency in a few days.

After reading the Problem Solving Section, I decided to take the 50 question quiz. It took me less than 85 minutes to complete the questions. Some of the questions were difficult. Nevertheless, I felt confident that I gave my best effort. I scored 80%. I am pleased by the score, but I must get better!

Problem Solving Practice Quiz Score: 40/50 (80%)

I decided to slowly read the Reading Comprehension Section of Kaplan GMAT Premier Program 2008 Edition Book. The Reading Comprehension Section’s tips were quite helpful. Prior to reading this section, I had never considered “attacking” the reading passages. I also learned to find the “scope” of the author’s argument. While my overall quiz score was not great, I am encouraged by my progress during the last 50 days.

Reading Comprehension Practice Quiz Score: 35/50 (70%)

Not only did I read the Sentence Correction Section, but also I completed the 50 Sentence Correction Section Quiz.

My performance was not horrible. Unfortunately, I made a few careless errors; however, I learned from those mistakes. With more practice, my scores will improve; I have no doubts that I can score higher on the practice exams. I passed Financial Accounting! On August 8, 2009, I returned to full-time studying for the GMAT. Over the next five days, I will complete the Kaplan Premier Program 2008 Edition Book. To start, I read the Critical Reasoning Section. Afterwards, I completed the Critical Reasoning Practice Quiz. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in my score listed below. However, I am rusty! I also tired down the stretch; unfortunatly, I missed 5 out of the last 10 questions. Ouch!

Critical Reasoning Practice Quiz Score: 37/50 (74%)

P.S. When I started this GMAT journey, my Math skills were on life support. Some people might have encouraged me to do something else after seeing my earlier GMAT practice performances. I am glad that I did not quit the dream, but I still have a long road to travel if I plan to achieve a high GMAT score.

For the rest of the month, my GMAT studies will be limited, for I must pass my Accounting class. There will be no mores practice tests until August 2009. I do plan to study the Verbal Section of The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 11th Edition. I have yet to reach a Verbal scale score of least 40 on any practice exam. I can use my work breaks and lunch to review these sections. In addition, I will find 20 minutes a day for math. During this time, I will study the flashcards of both Manhattan GMAT and Beatthegmat.com.

These last two weeks in July will be rough. However, I must succeed, for a graduate business school education will enable me to compete in Corporate America. I am determined to beat the GMAT, even if I have to shed a few tears in the process.

I am truly sorry; my Accounting homework has been tough. However, I have been studying for the GMAT. I review Manhattan GMAT’s Flashcards 30 to 60 minutes per day. In my next post, I will provide you with more insight into my study strategy for the remainder of the month.

To be honest, I have not completed a full length practice exam in a while. I want to save these practice tests for the beginning of August. Hopefully, I will have a better understanding of both the Math and Verbal sections by that time. If so, I expect to see an increase in my practice GMAT score. My goal is to reach an average score of 650 by August 15, 2009.

Today I felt the need to practice. I decided to take Kaplan’s GMAT Premier Program 2008 Book Test. This was new practice material, so I did not know what to expect. From the first question, this GMAT practice test was an enjoyable adventure, even though I tired by the end.

Some of the questions were brutal; however, I did not cringe. I welcomed each question with glee. What will my score be? In the end, I received the score of 620; it was the first time I exceeded 590 on a practice exam. Hopefully, I can keep excelling.

Score:

620 - Kaplan’s GMAT Premier Program 2008 Book Test

My goal was to score a 600. I know some people consider a GMAT score of 600 to be worthless. I personally would not pass judgment on anyone, regardless of the score; the GMAT material is tough. To be honest, my goal was based on past performances on various practice problems and practice tests. I won't be taking the actual GMAT for another two to three months.

I must confess that I did not achieve my goal. I scored a 550. What does this mean? I have a lot more work to do. Furthermore, I can afford to slow down. I completed the quantitative section with about 4 minutes left, and I completed the verbal section with about 7 minutes left.

I struggled a bit with these questions, even tough I missed only three questions (18/21 correct or 85.7%). I deserve no pat on the back.

I studied the Manhattan GMAT flashcards to gain more math knowledge and verbal knowledge. Hopefully, I can retain the information on these flashcards; otherwise, repetition will eventually allow the information to be absorbed by my brain.

Over the next two months, I will constantly studying. Also, I also will have an Accounting class to take. Hopefully, I will not feel overwhelmed.

How times have changed? Today, some people change jobs and careers as often as they buy new shoes. If you have not already guessed, I am thirty-two years old. By the time I retire in another thirty years, the business world will look dramatically different than today. As a result, how do I plan to navigate through these rough times to retire without the need to reenter the workforce at age seventy?

Be Honest

By now, I did not plan to be depended on Corporate America. In college, I started taking steps toward becoming financially independent by age twenty-eight. In addition, I wanted to be mayor by age twenty-eight of my hometown, East Cleveland, OH and remain in politics for an extended period. My college plan did not work; however, I still dream of running a successful business.
Honestly, I am not bitter because of my failures. In the process, I have become a better thinker and leader. Besides, I needed to be humbled because youthful arrogance can be destructive. During the last three years, I have worked diligently to improve my math and writing skills. But more importantly, I am now discovering my full potential. Therefore, I am raw talent. And when I create a YouTube video or write an article, I enjoy the experience as much as the “Mt. Olympus” gods enjoy ambrosia.

The Plan

Last year, I wrote a master plan for this year. I wanted to increase the name recognition of http://www.financial-shopper-network.com. In the past, the articles at the website did not reflect the best quality. Furthermore, the marketing efforts to promote the website were dismal. So far, this year’s website results have been positive.

I do some website marketing on YouTube and Twitter. This is my time to experiment with marketing tools and marketing ideas. I need the hands on experience to see what works.

I also decided to market my poetry. I am a decent poet. However, I have been trying to develop an online audience for my poetry because I might want to better understand the poetry market. I might be interested in marketing a newcomer poet in the near future.

I am currently studying for the GMAT. I desperately need to go to graduate business school. The opportunity will provide me with a solid foundation in business strategy. When I first bought the GMAT Review in August 2008, I could not solve any of the quantitative questions. I was frustrated. But, I now love studying for the GMAT. I will take the actual GMAT test in last August or early September 2009.

Analysis

To some people, my schedule is hectic. They are correct. I work a 9 to 5 job and do everything else mentioned in this article. I have heard from several B-school graduates that graduate business school is very hectic. I am just trying to prepare myself. Graduate business school will be a tough journey; however, I am willing to risk it. I plan to start a corporation within the next five years.

Nevertheless, I plan to accomplish a lot in 2009. Remember that an architect starts with a blueprint or plan to create a building. Well, I must become the architect in 2009 in order for my online businesses to reach their full potential. I cannot delay my goals to 2010 or 2011. Therefore, my 2009 theme is simply “The Year of Business Dedication.”

Earlier today, I posted my first YouTube video of the year, which I titled “Jason Cunningham is Back in 2009: The Year of Business Dedication! “ If anyone cares, my YouTube channel is sjbc4119. In any case, I mentioned in the video that my 2009 goals would appear on this blog. Ladies and gentlemen, there is no need to keep you waiting. Listed below are my business and education goals for 2009:

• Score at least 700 on the GMAT
• Get accepted in a graduate school program
• Earn the FFSI designation (I have three courses left!)
• Write 365 articles for http://www.financial-shopper-network.com
• Write 40 new poems and 100 new quotes at http://www.financialshoppernetwork.blogspot.com
• To be mentioned in an article of a major website such as Fool.com or Entrepreneur.com
• Improve the Alexa.com U.S. ranking to 500,000

These goals are listed in no particular order. They are all important, and I plan to accomplish them all in 2009, with no exceptions. And most importantly, these goals are realistic.

However, the creation of this website was an extension of my first attempt at becoming an entrepreneur. In 2001, after working as an assistant bank manager for a brief period of time, I decided to become a financial representative of a well-known insurance company. The financial representative job was a sales position, and the majority of my compensation was based on commissions from the sale of financial and insurance products, such as life insurance and mutual funds. However, for a six month period, between the summer of 2002 and the spring of 2003, I worked for a fraternal insurance company, prior to coming back to work at the well-know insurance company, which was mentioned above, for a six month period in 2003. At the fraternal insurance company, I met a fellow African-American male who had created his own website to create insurance leads for himself. He also encouraged me to create my own website, beginning in 2002, until the website mentioned above was created.

What Was the Point of the Website?

In hindsight, I needed to read a book on website marketing before starting my website. To be honest, I was too excited after purchasing the web domain. Therefore, I made every effort to make the site live, instead of spending a few weeks to a month writing a marketing plan and deciding on a suitable content management system, as opposed to purchasing FrontPage, which I believe requires a person to have an “eye for web design.” Trust me; I am not a web design artist. As a result, my first website design looked terrible. Some of my friends suggested that I hire a professional webmaster. In my opinion, they were right; I needed some help from a good web designer. Unfortunately, I hired the wrong web designer who also promised to market the website. I wasted $500 because he did absolutely nothing for me. Needless to say, I decided to redesign the website without any other help. Eventually, I bought a few web templates that were compatible with FrontPage. But I was still unhappy with the website’s appearance; I did not look professional to me.

On the other hand, assembling content for the website was not exciting. At that time, I knew little about marketing, especially website marketing. In spite of this, I knew that the website needed to be used to create insurance leads for me, and I planned to sell the rest of the insurance leads to other insurance agents that I could not use, because I was not licensed in those states to sell insurance. In theory, the plan sounded easy! But, I found myself struggling with the number of links that should be created for insurance products, and what articles should be written on the website to attract online visitors? Truly, I remained frustrated until I started making $200 to $400 per month. In a few years, I watched my unique web traffic increase from 2 to 300, on a daily basis.

Until 2007, I never thought about creating a website marketing plan. It sounds ridiculous, but it is true. I created thousands of reciprocal link exchanges to gain high search engine rankings. For a while, in my mind, the reciprocal link exchanges were the only marketing that the website needed. Over time, the search engines became smarter by devaluing the importance of reciprocal link exchanges, almost to nothing, beginning in the fall of 2006. Additionally, my web traffic eroded to 20 website visitors per day, in 2007.

The Website Today

Prior to website traffic collapse in 2007, I decided to purchase a content management system at the end of 2006. It was a good investment because some of my customers have commented on the ease of its use, in comparison to the FrontPage version of the website – some of our older web pages are still presented on a FrontPage template. While the content management system needs to be made even more user friendly, the website finally looks professional. In addition, the website is being marketed on YouTube, Digg.com, and through blogs and RSS feeds. The creation of a marketing strategy, along with a better web design, will continue to allow the website to better position itself in the marketplace. In 2009, do not be surprised to learn that the website is generating more than 500 unique people per day, prior to the end of the year!
