2024 was rough. As of this writing, it still is but there is some silver lining. First, a quick backstory.

It started in June 2023 when the company I had a three year contract with ceased to exist. The video game industry also tanked, releasing thousands of highly skilled veteran writers into the field. With over 200 applications out there and with the exception of some gig work, I still can’t find a job 18 months later. Everything else that followed was a fallout from the lack of the income and it is significant.

Now for the silver lining.

2024 in Review

I had an acting gig that paid fairly well. Not enough for me to keep my car, but it was something that allowed us to put food on the table. An amazing friend came through and loaned us the money to prevent eviction. Moving next to a major city also opened up a visit to a free clinic to address physical and mental health . And in a clutch move, an old client of mine had me do some web work that afforded me the medication to stop my hypertension from killing me.

Among those medications is stuff for ADHD. The stress this year, combined with this condition, made development on Evindale nigh impossible. Still, I managed to get some really good work in and now that the meds have started to kick in, I’ve been non-stop for 48 hours.

Hope in 2025: Campaigns

I would love to have two campaigns in 2025: one vampire chronicle and one campaign set in the 7th Age of Evindale.

First, Philadelphia: the Crusade is a Sabbat campaign I started developing earlier in the year. It’s the story of a small group of individuals from their human life through to becoming veterans of the Gehenna War. For fans of Vampire: the Masquerade, the story provides the bridge between versions of the WoD, culminating in the 5th edition.

Back on the Evindale front, “Fragments”, and its prequel “Zero Rebels”, are designed to explore the notions of identity, loss, and revenge on a very personal level. Both stories are quite different, but their theme is shared with mine of 2024: despite adversity, you must stand up, know who you are, and fight those who would say otherwise.

I would love to get these off the ground.

Freaking Website

But first, this website has needed an overhaul. The old framework was too slow and removing it necessitated a complete rebuild. I had used AI art as placeholders and with a bump in confidence (but perhaps not yet the talent) gained through some illustration practice, the art to appear on the site but 100% have been created by humans, including yours truly. For the meantime, it’ll largely be a site with graphic design. If you’re an artist and want to help bring it to life, hey, reach out. Let’s work something out.

Looking Ahead

2025 is about reclamation and personal discovery to me. I typically communicate this through my stories. Lots of work ahead, but let’s see what happens.

Btw…

Btw, did I mention I created a new lineage for the WoE? A group of people who want to be recognized for their individuality despite the unfair reputation gained from the blood in their veins. If you happen to run a world with tieflings in it, these two would get along quite well though they don’t share hellish ancestry. I went a different route.

Born to a merchant and a cleric, Mawl’s early fascination with the afterlife led him to explore obscure cults and eventually wizardry at Arcandius Cultrekari. Under the tutelage of Teari Garsprey, he became proficient in necromancy and joined The Society of the Black Cloth, a guild of morticians with a sinister side. Mawl’s experiments on unwilling subjects, often the impoverished, revealed his disregard for human life. His departure from the city in 1235 IC marked the beginning of a spree of murders, culminating in his arrest and conviction in 1244 IC for the deaths of seventeen followers of Medres. A dramatic escape from execution only added to his infamy, with sightings reported a decade later, suggesting his dark legacy endures.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Known for his research in soul-crafting and blood magic, Neseris has also served as one of the nine of the Serulean Cabal of Amstrad, Minister of Security to the Emperor of Tunbria (where he was awarded the County of Svae), and more recently as a self-appointed prince of Mütvia.

Contrary to his flair for fashion, Neseris performs his studies (and presumably lives) in an unnamed decrepit stone tower in the southeastmost portion of Mütvia. The exact nature of his studies is unknown, but they have left a formally lush land barren and destroyed.

THIRD AGE

King Ostereg II of the Fanuel Empire decreed upon his father’s death, Ostereg I, that a new era would begin thus wiping away centuries of fear-minded isolationism. He created a new tax system to reward merchants for journeying into other lands and selling Fanuei goods. As trade improved, so did the need for new means of communication and standardized dates between the Fanuel Empire and the outlying countries.

In the fifth year of King Ostereg II’s reign, Fanuei goods were in the hands of all neighboring nations. Now with the need to solidify civil relations between his and the surrounding kingdoms, Ostereg II commissioned the first Golden Calendar to mark the prosperous years to follow.

Thus was born in 7693 LC (Logost Credi, or the local calendar to the Fanuel Empire) the Golden Calendar which started as Year 1 on the First Day of the First Moon of 7693 LC, the 28th birthday of King Ostereg II.

The Golden Calendar divided the 370-day year into 12 months. The two seasons, Summer and Winter, each had six months within them with all but the first month of each season having 31 days; the first month had 30. Hence months 1 and 7 had 30 days and all others had 31.

When King Ostereg II died in 68 GC at the old human age of 96 years, the Empire entered into a period of mourning and it was decreed by his daughter, Queen Periss, a period of remembrance be created celebrating the Gold King’s deeds and a time when the Empire would give back to its citizenry. The calendar would be changed once more to encompass a two-week period of celebration after the first harvest in Winter. By doing so, the Queen took the 370-day year, made all 12 months have 30 days, and inserted the two-week-long celebration known as “Festival of Osteregina” after the 8th month. Each week, like the preceding calendar, had six days.

Likewise, the month names were changed to reflect harvest seasons. While this brought about an outcry from the more religious who favored their varied religious holidays and similarly named months, Queen Periss was notoriously secular as she understood religion would divide a nation internally. Furthermore, all countries had harvests of some kind and conducted some of the same practices around the same time of year.

The current Golden Calendar:

MONTHS OF SUMMER
Frostdeep, 30 days (January)
Wintersthaw, 30 days (February)
Sunsbreach, 30 days (March)
Lastthaw, 30 days (April)
Seedsee, 30 days (May)
Highsun 30 days (June)

MONTHS OF WINTER
Nightsfall, 30 days (July)
Harvest, 30 days (August)
Festival, 10 days
Winterscome, 30 day (September)
Lastgather, 30 days (October)
Nightswall, 30 days (November)
Highmoons, 30 days (December)

The months are based on the wonderfully regular Serith which has a 30 day cycle and is the closer of the two moons.
Serith’s sister, the larger yet more distant Caelen, has a regular cycle of 90 days.

In some cultures, particularly those that follow Erithis in her fertility aspect the months are based on Dio’s rotation with the year being 360 days long with a four year cycle of varied length seasons.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

I read Yelena’s notes, it inspired to leave my mark if this is my resting place. Her spirit lies in these walls, by Vasja’s Heart I will not suffer the same fate.

Mi harezh lo nomikwatru. Sing my name so I may live.

My name is Huris of Fajdan, Born of Lazfi, Born of Idszo, Born of Karouz of the Twin Hills That Climb. I put into the earth my will, the wind my song, the water my hope. Give my harezh purpose.

My children: Namijde, whose eyes glow in the morning; Sirazh, whose hands dance at the strings; Kalle, whose spirit is seen in smile; Feriz, whose songs are sung in Fajdan; Dezhme, whose soul dances in the Veiled Garden; and Taraese, whose body gives life to Taraese-kla, Lone Tree That Fights The Storms.

My heart-song: Jezha of Dhambe, whose eyes make me melt, whose words are soft, whose body has given life to six. You have strength I’ve never known, I carry your song in my heart.

My heart-sword: Dham of Ambers, whose skill won against the Gor; whose mind is known by the Three; whose beauty radiates like the storm-sun. Your wisdom has protected us, your arms embraced us, your kindness is known by all. Your vitality is infectious and brings me warmth in nights that would see me cold. You protect me still.

My heart-dance: Kolto of Bri-Hanan, whose laughter brings life to life; whose far-seeing-mind teaches many; whose wine has made us wealthier in spirit – and me sick! You are my light in the darkness, my calm in danger, my razor thoughts when the storms would confuse.

My name is Huris of Fajdan, Born of Lazfi, Born of Idszo, Born of Karouz of the Twin Hills That Climb. I put into the earth my will, the wind my song, the water my hope.

Dolima re hezan. Give my life breath.

The house withstood last night’s attacks, barely. Repairs are sorely needed. I don’t intend to use all the rooms, I’ll salvage wood from them.

I found an old journal under some loose floorboards. The pages were brittle, the ink faded, but the entries were legible.

The previous occupant was an old woman — Yelena, a “vrojiti” by trade, someone who dabbles in folk magic. She wrote about charms, talismans, amulets, and wards.

Yelena has been saving my life.

The prior residents discovered ways to keep these creatures of the night at bay, though it makes little sense to me. How a bundle of herbs or a rusty nail functions as a bar to their entrance, I cannot say. Yet it does.

Over the past few nights they’ve ripped and clawed at the structure, successfully destroying plank walls but never stepping beyond. They want me, my flesh or soul, and are routinely denied.

I will learn the ways of this land yet.
