What we know from the tear down:

Front glass is Corning Gorilla Glass reported to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic

512MBs Memory

We heard this rumor last week and I stopped by my local T-Mobile store to inquire and the rep told me “We don’t know why yet, but we have to open two hours early on June 19”

Today T-Mobile issued an official press release acknowledging all devices free on June 19 and stores opening early across the country. If you need a phone I would wait until Saturday.

This is available for anyone switching to a family plan or activating a new line. There is no mention on people who qualify for upgrades but I would defiantly go in and plead your case on Saturday as mobile providers really need to offer current customers a thank you every now and then.

Full press release below:

T-Mobile Celebrates Dads with Unprecedented, One-Day-Only Every Phone Free Event on Sat., June 19

T-Mobile Declares “No More Ties for Dad” for Father’s Day;

New Poll Notes Most Dads Would Trade-in Every Tie in Their Closet for a New Mobile Phone

BELLEVUE, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–To help celebrate dad, T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announces the mother of all Father’s Day offers: on Sat., June 19, for one day only, every phone in every T-Mobile store is free.* This first-of-its-kind promotion will “untie” families from giving dad the traditional, same-old gift, instead offering him something he craves — a new smartphone.

“For this very special day celebrating dad and the entire family, T-Mobile is thrilled to offer an industry-first promotion that helps families stay connected”

T-Mobile will break the traditional gift-giving mold by offering every phone in every store for free. This Saturday, starting at 8 a.m., simply visit a T-Mobile retail store and switch to any family plan, or add a new line to an existing family plan, and walk out of the store with a new phone for every new line with a two-year agreement — customer’s choice — while supplies last.

“For this very special day celebrating dad and the entire family, T-Mobile is thrilled to offer an industry-first promotion that helps families stay connected,” said Adrian Hurditch, vice president of marketing, T-Mobile USA. “This unprecedented event champions dad and helps families stick together with the latest phones — all for free.”

With affordable unlimited calling, texting and data family plans, T-Mobile is giving our most connected customers options that take advantage of the latest devices. With the Father’s Day promotion, dads can choose from a selection of 30 devices, no phones excluded, including a variety of brands such as HTC, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, Samsung, SonyEricsson, and Sharp. All phones will be available while supplies last, so customers are encouraged to arrive early to stores to secure the latest and most popular new devices, including the most recently launched smartphones from T-Mobile:

myTouch 3G Slide™: Combines a slide-out QWERTY keyboard with an incredibly crisp, high-performance touch screen powered by the latest Android™ software. The device hosts unique new features that will help dads connect more easily, more quickly and more often, including the Faves Gallery™, myModes and Genius Button™.

HTC HD2: Offering the largest touch screen size on a smartphone in the U.S., this slim and sleek device comes ready with a blazing-fast processor and access to millions of eBooks, movies, television programs and more, keeping dad constantly entertained.

Garminfone™: For the adventurous dad, this new Android™-powered smartphone is fully-integrated with Garmin’s premium navigation experience and includes voice-guided and on-screen directions, real-time traffic, weather, and gas price updates.

“No More Ties” – Dads Want Smartphones

T-Mobile’s celebration of dads couldn’t come at a better time with new T-Mobile survey results showing that more than half of dads received Father’s Day gifts they didn’t want. In fact, 53% of dads don’t recall the gift they received just two years ago.

According to the poll, one in four dads would ban ties as gifts for Father’s Day, and the majority of dads (56%) would trade all ties in their closet for a new phone. Nearly three quarters (74%) of dads polled said they would be excited to get a new phone for Dad’s Day, and more than half believe their current phone is out of date.

Dads want a gift they’ll actually use, with two-thirds admitting they’ve received a Father’s Day gift they’ve never or hardly ever used. If dads had their way, not only would they ban ties but 19% said they would ban golf balls, 17% would ban coffee mugs, 14% would ban cologne and 11% would ban desk sets.

Dads have one day to get the phone they’ve really been craving – and he can ensure the rest of the family can join him in staying connected. T-Mobile’s free phones Father’s Day promotion is one day only, June 19, in every T-Mobile store across the country. For additional promotion details and a list of participating stores, visit http://www.t-mobile.com/celebratefamilies.

*The offer is valid at T-Mobile owned and operated locations only. New activation on qualifying family plan with two-year agreement required. Limit five lines per family plan. Mail-in rebate and restrictions may apply. Store hours may vary. See store for details.

We have heard from many sources that in true Apple style the pre-order site for the iPhone 4 will go live at 8:00 AM Eastern, June 15. Also keep in mind you can go to your local BestBuy and pre-order. The listed time is an estimate so keep hitting that refresh button.

Below is AT&T’s response. Take it for what it is worth. A generic PR statement. to try and make you feel better about exposing your personal information. There are reports that the ICC ID could be used to locate an iPad device with help from additional databases.

“AT&T was informed by a business customer on Monday of the potential exposure of their iPad ICC IDS. The only information that can be derived from the ICC IDS is the e-mail address attached to that device.

This issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and was corrected by Tuesday; and we have essentially turned off the feature that provided the e-mail addresses.

The person or group who discovered this gap did not contact AT&T.

We are continuing to investigate and will inform all customers whose e-mail addresses and ICC IDS may have been obtained.

We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted.”

Gawker reported today that at least 114,000 email addresses and their associated iPad 3G ICC ID numbers have been leaked via a script put against an AT&T wireless site. It appears this script was used to validate accounts to an iPad device by Apple stores during activation. The script only returned an email address associated with an ICC ID.

While the security breach may not seem to be too bad it is still a breach that AT&T needs to disclose to the effected users, which technically is every iPad 3G user. Neither Apple nor AT&T have issued a statement on this breach which is just another black eye for AT&T.

The real concern with the breach is the email addresses of many top U.S. Military officials as well as CEO’s from many top companies. Even Microsoft is listed. I must also wonder why these people use their “real” email addresses for this type of account. It is called setting up a Gmail account for situations when you have to provide an email address for this type of subscription and don’t expose a direct way to contact you within your company or organization.

This script was shared prior to being brought to AT&T’s attention so you can bet this list has already been sold to spammers worldwide and hacking attempts are sure to follow with spoof emails.

Below is two screen shots from the Gawker article.

Earlier this morning I was contacted by a close friend affiliated with the retail side of T-Mobile USA. He just received word directly from their Samsung account representative that T-Mobile will in fact be getting the Samsung Galaxy S during the first week of July. There has been much speculation and rumor that with the launch of Verizon’s HTC Incredible and Sprint’s EVO 4G that T-Mobile and Samsung were making a push to release this earlier than originally anticipated. Not to mention the hype surrounding Apple’s iPhone 4 which is expected to hit shelves on June 24th.

In the past few months we’ve seen countless articles on the probable provider for Samsung to offer their phone to consumers. There has been no mention of any exclusive contract with T-Mobile and many still believe that Samsung will offer the Galaxy S through all four major US carriers (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint). An indication of that comes with the renaming of the phone. The Samsung account rep mentioned that the phone will in fact release with T-Mobile as the Samsung Vibrant. Many similar models found in the wild carrying names such as the i9000 or T959 look very similar to the Galaxy S but apparently lack in the hardware department. The rep definitely established that this is in fact the Samsung Galaxy S and all its Super AMOLED, 1ghz Snapdragon, 512 ram, 9.9mm thin, Android 2.1 (upgradeable to 2.2) running goodness dubbed as the Vibrant for sale through T-Mobile at the beginning of July.

While none of this information has been received through a concrete paper trail, there sure is a lot of evidence to back it up. And the fact that Samsung has made no mention of exclusive contracts for this phone doesn’t make it all that far-fetched. Perhaps the representative has an undying pride in his company’s product and felt the urge to let this slip after Steve Jobs’ keynote that sent the twitterverse buzzing yesterday (9 of the top 10 trending topics!). It was also reported from AndroidGuys earlier today that they received email from Samsung to “Save the Date” as they plan to bring to the table the next generation in Android smart phones at the end of this month in New York; without a doubt a coming announcement of the Galaxy S. In addition to this was a hands-on-video with the Galaxy S found on www.howardchui.com that shows T-Mobile friendly icons on its display.

As the summer smartphone battle of 2010 rages on, we’ll just have to eagerly await the arrival of its latest contender. For our NBA fans out there, this is the smartphone equivalent of the 2010 free agent class and holds just the same amount of hype. And with Samsung holding out until the first week of July, the Galaxy S may as well be referred to as the LeBron James of it all! So on that note….GO LAKERS!

AT&T announced today a change in pricing for data services for iPhone and iPad. We feel this change is going to make the majority of data users happy but upset power users.

Just when all of us were relishing in Skype over 3G AT&T abandons unlimited data services effective June 7th. The most data you can “pre-purchase” is 2GB for $25 and then pay an additional $10 for every gigabyte after that.

The smallest plan available is 200 MB for $15 and be warned going over your 200MB cap incurs an additional $15 charge and only gives you another 200 MBs to use in the billing cycle.

Along with the news that AT&T is halting new unlimited data plans they also announced tethering. If you ask us, sharing 2GB between a laptop and an iPhone is not going to cut it. The tethering add-on is $20 which makes no sense if you are simply pulling from the same pool of data.

Existing unlimited users you are safe and can stay with your $30 a month unlimited packages. What is yet to be seen is when upgrading to a new iPhone will AT&T require a change to the new data plan.

Below is the pricing structure followed by the entire press release.

DataPlus. Provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 1,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 150 emails with attachments, plus view 400 Web pages, plus post 50 photos on social media sites, plus watch 20 minutes of streaming video – for just $15 per month.** This plan, which can save customers up to 50 percent off their wireless data charges, is designed for people who primarily like to surf the web, send email and use social networking apps. If customers exceed 200 MB in a monthly billing cycle, they will receive an additional 200 MB of data usage for $15 for use in the cycle. Currently, 65 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month on average.

DataPro. Provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 10,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 1,500 emails with attachments, plus view 4,000 Web pages, plus post 500 photos to social media sites, plus watch 200 minutes of streaming video – for $25 per month.** Should a customer exceed 2 GB during a billing cycle, they will receive an additional 1 GB of data for $10 for use in the cycle. Currently, 98 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 2 GB of data a month on average.

Tethering. Smartphone customers – including iPhone customers – who choose the DataPro plan have the option to add tethering for an additional $20 per month. Tethering lets customers use their smartphones as a modem to provide a broadband connection for laptop computers, netbooks or other computing devices. Tethering for iPhones will be available when Apple releases iPhone OS 4 this summer.

Full Press Release:

AT&T*, the U.S. smartphone leader, today introduced new wireless data plans that make it more affordable for more people to enjoy the benefits of the mobile Internet. Customers can pick the new data plan that best meets their needs – either a $15 per month entry plan or a $25 per month plan with 10 times more data. Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension.

“AT&T helps mobilize everything on the Internet – your favorite web sites, TV shows, music, games and social networks. Virtually everything previously done while sitting at a computer can now be done on the go,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “To give more people the opportunity to experience these benefits, we’re breaking free from the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people.”

Each plan includes unlimited access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can also use unlimited Wi-Fi at home, in the office or elsewhere if available. AT&T will also help customers manage their wireless data usage by sending free text messages after customers reach different usage intervals and by providing online tools, including a smartphone app that shows monthly usage information.

The new wireless data plans – including a new tethering option – will be available beginning June 7. Current AT&T voice and texting plans are unchanged.

More Choice

The new AT&T plans provide large amounts of data to enable people to enjoy their favorite online activities:

With the new wireless data plans, pricing for a smartphone voice and data bundle now starts at just $54.99 per month for an individual plan, or $24.99 per month for an additional line on a FamilyTalk plan, $15 per month less than the price of the previous entry level bundle.

For new iPad customers, the $25 per month 2 GB plan will replace the existing $29.99 unlimited plan. iPad customers will continue to pre-pay for their wireless data plan and no contract is required. Existing iPad customers who have the $29.99 per month unlimited plan can keep that plan or switch to the new $25 per month plan with 2 GB of data.

Wi-Fi at 20,000 AT&T Hot Spots

The vast majority of smartphones that AT&T offers have built-in Wi-Fi, which lets the devices automatically switch from the wireless network to a Wi-Fi hotspot without prompting, making Wi-Fi even more convenient and easy to use. This enables customers to use Wi-Fi in the home, office and at public locations where available. Wi-Fi will generally provide consistently fast speeds and does not count against a customer’s monthly data plan usage total. In addition, virtually all AT&T smartphone customers have access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can get more information on how to use Wi-Fi and find the location of AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at www.att.com/wifiaccess.

Monitoring and Managing Usage

To help customers easily check their data usage, AT&T has made the information readily available in a number of ways***:

Customer Text Notifications On Data Usage. When customers begin to approach their monthly usage limit, AT&T will send three text notifications – after they reach 65 percent, 90 percent and 100 percent of the threshold. Customers will also be sent emails if AT&T has their email address.

Data Usage Monitoring. Additionally, customers with iPhones and other select devices can use the free AT&T myWireless application to check data usage. The application is available for download in several smartphone app stores. Also, AT&T customers can call *DATA# from their wireless phone to check their data usage for the current billing period. They receive a free text message with their usage information. Customers can also go online to www.att.com/wireless to see all of their usage information, past and present.

Data Calculator. The easy-to-use online data calculator enables customers to estimate their mobile data usage and get a better sense for which data plan is right for them. It’s located at www.att.com/datacalculator.

Customers can learn more about the new plans online at www.att.com/dataplans, by contacting AT&T customer service at 1-800-331-0500, or by visiting an AT&T retail store.

AT&T expects these new data plans to have minimal revenue impact this year and to not affect previous guidance for 2010.

* AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

** Usage examples are estimates. Individual results will vary based upon customer’s Internet usage patterns.

*** Customers will see their usage reflected in their tools generally within 15 hours or less of actual data usage.

Largest Wi-Fi network claim based on non-municipal company and owned and operated hotspots. An 802.11 b/g enabled device required.

If you are an avid Skype user like we are the Skype 2.0 update available today for iPhone is going to make you very happy.

I guess Apple, Skype and AT&T finally came to an agreement on allowing VoIP on the 3G. There is an ominous warning when you go to download Skype in the app store. It states, “Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least the end of August 2010 after which there will be a small monthly fee.”

Well for the time being enjoy your free Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G. We are very excited for OS 4.0 and being able to leave Skype running.

Give it a spin and tell us what you think.
