Brazil s government under President Dilma in total disregard of world – approves construction of Belomonte hydro water project. 800 000 Acres of prime forest will be inundated – ecologists mention a much higher figure.

World ‘s ecologists warn of the dangers but are totally disregarded. Below is a tweet from Greenpeace :

Part 1 of 2 – Laos coffee story

This question one must ask himself – and those who have experienced the latest coffee delight.

We were on a business trip in southern Laos – Champasak – Pakse province — photography Apart from the amazing countryside, with its myriads of breathtaking sights, Laos has some of the most tranquil places to visit. You will be taken back to colonial times, whilst relaxing on a boat on the Mekong or simply sipping a cup of Laos coffee in a street side cafe, which you can find in all the cities of Laos, starting with Vientiane itself.

In fact some of the most memorable Laos coffee sessions taken were in Vangvieng. Laos is eternal, a timeless country where one can feel the flair of times passed. The hectic found in Western countries – forget all about it. Laos is a dream come true – if one considers a more relaxed lifestyle. 

Driving through the night would not be always recommendable in South East Asia – ir any other developing nation e.g. Africa  Articles . There are numerous perils on the road, and they are be life threatening. With over thirty years behind me in Africa I can tell tales of harrowing incidents which occurred whilst driving in the night. I guess I owe it to you to point some of the perils out in a later post here.

We were driving – faster than I liked – on 1000 km of Laos country road, passing all major cities – Savannakhet and Pakse to name a few. 

Arriving at 3 A.M.  in Pakse we were – to say the least – dogtired. Settled into our Hotel we crashed out immediately.

8 A.M. saw us at the breakfast table – our guide – a consultant and dean of faculty – enjoying his bowl of Laos style bowl of soup with rice noodles – and coriander , fresh morning glory and basil leaves, which are eaten raw. We were all hungry but I decided to stay off. I preferred some fresh fruits instead.

Soon thereafter a wonderful trip took us to border country with Vietnam – a dust road which was in use by Pathet Lao during the Vietnam war.

We encountered a breathtaking scenery whilst in Champasak province and bolaven plateau. Nature is still intact onn the plateau, with water falls and fertile grounds covering the whole plateau.

It is here where coffee grows – in green lush surroundings. Laos coffee is grown on volcanic soil – the reason for its rich aroma.

Africasiaeuro – industries – renewable energy – art 

I came across the trucks whilst on a trip to China years back. We were on a lake in Eastern China ( see pic below ).

I recall the tranquil scenery ( reminding me of southern France ), pristine forests and peaks. Amid all this we swam on the lake ( dropped the tiny succulent honey melons we bought earlier into the lake to cool it ) – all in all a wonderful experience.

Moving a bamboo raft with one steering oar is no joke – I found out early. After some practice though – the raft should move elegantly straight – I found out the technique taught by the oarswoman on the picture above.

What I must add is this experience was one of the best ever in China. I continued to visit the lake throughout the summer.

We picked fresh chestnuts from the trees on the surrounding island ( excellent ).

Late at night we would have dinner in one of the nearby village restaurants, home cooked food for 3 Bucks ( including beer ) . Tiny dumplings, freshly prepared, country style steamed rise, green tiny sauteed vegetable ( xiao bai cai), bamboo shoots, chicken.

On an evening we moved to a restaurant near the village – further up the mountain. There we got a ride from a local villager in a truck ( you see below ).

Amazingly, I was stunned by its sturdiness – a true workhorse – running on 2 cylinders, carrying 7 tons of material. I had seen trucks before – even drove them in the army – but nothing like this.

I am still as excited as I used to be. These trucks run for 40 years with no significant  signs of exhaustion – simple design – and are very suitable for African and other developing countries. As a result I decided to get the agency of the truck manufacturer (who also – by the way – manufactures beach buggies – and agricultural machines )
