Today is my Birthday. How happy I am, can be approximately gauged from the 'Happiness' graph ( The graph is perfectly accurate cos it is supported by a thesis yet to be submitted by me in the near future.) The initial 10 years, we never know what is going on, but are still flattered by the attention, cakes, new dresses and all...From 15 to 20, it's like "so what's new in this dude..".From 20 to 25 years, the sudden rise in the happiness, is increasingly due to the anticipation of getting closer to "marriage-able" age. After the actual marriage, assumed to be at 25, the drop in the graph is expected...The gradual decrease continues till 50.Beyond 50, you are just happy someone remembered it's your birthday !!

Fashion - Review

Story-wise Fashion is the story of a small-town girl making it big in the fashion industry, reaching a peak, sliding down and then finding peace in a comeback.The subject is handled quite well by the director, showing the maturing of the protagonist and her transformation into the very things she morally abhorred when she first came into the field.

Accurate portrayal of the industry is only partially achieved in the film, at-least that is what I feel.I have to admit that I have not even a shoe string knowledge of the fashion industry.The film itself seems to revolve around the personal story of a typical text-book case of one getting arrogant with success and all.

Meghna Mathur ( Priyanka Chopra ) hails from Chandigarh, whose parents and relatives are against her dreams of becoming a model ( a 'supermodel', in her own words ).She arrives in Mumbai to kick start her career and dreams, only to be met with the usual, and expected, difficulties of financing a good photographer, fighting her self-esteem in accepting a check for being 'eye-candy' at a page3 party,etc.The usual stuff.She runs into an upcoming model, with whom she starts sharing a flat.In time both of them fall in love, deep enough to have sex but not so deep enough to continue their relationship once she starts becoming successful.Successful, she does become, after a series of social connections, eventually replacing the top model for a well placed brand.From then on starts her upward movement to the peak, in the process losing out on all her past relationships, transforming herself into the bitch of a model she thought she would never become.Cigarettes and wine become a part of her life, not to mention sex with the owner of the well placed brand.( One point to note is that the film shows the highly unlikely scenario of one man, the owner of the well placed brand, holding the reins of the entire industry)

Her downward trend starts with her discovering that she is pregnant ( something that is very stupid, i mean hasn't she heard about contraceptives??.Hello, that is the fashion industry for God's sake.The director seems to have picked up this point for convenience.)She discovers that she was used all this time, her contract manipulated to include unfair clauses, again the usual stuff.Within a span of 20 frames, she loses everything.She then falls into drugs, sleeping for the third time in the film, with an African or a Jamaican or who knows..Anyway, she gets hyper-arrogant, loses her place in the industry and then returns to her home town.Now starts the whole emotionally-hurt-defeated-woman phase.Yawn.

After a year in the said phase, it takes her previously un-approving dad's advice to move her back to Mumbai, rebuilding her relationships and re-igniting her career.She finds her soul in helping another reached-the-peak-fucked-a-million-guys-lost-in-the-industry-now-into-drugs model ( This part of the movie is very vague, as to how helping the other model is emotionally uplifting to the protagonist ).Finally, she goes on to become a super model in Paris.

All actors have given commendable performances.Priyanka has done a good job, unexpected as it was.It serves to show that she is maturing as an actress.Madhur Bhandarkar, as usual, has been responsible enough to lay emphasis on the story rather than making it a sleaze ball movie.An easy temptation, given the subject of the film.

Watchability Index : 3/5

Rocks and Nuclear Deals

I am here again, after a long long time to bore you, with two topics.

Rock On !! : Finally, I have some hope that Bollywood will improve, for good.The movie is well scripted and the cast well chosen.Arjun Rampal did a very good job ( I half expected him to botch it up ), and so did Farhan Akhtar, acting and singing included.Once or twice I heard someone compare him to Bryan Adams, but then I'd say that is too much.Farhan has a unique voice, somewhere half stuck between constipation and barely-into-puberty, but that is the kind of voice Rock needs.
The direction is also very good.Bollywood needs directors like Abhishek, to save the face of Hindi cinema.One thing the movie has made me realise is that Rock music is truely good.All you have to do is hear it in a language that you are familiar in. ( I belong to the classic "trying to fit in as a lover of rock music" category of teens).
Not everyone can relate to a college life spent handling guitars, but then watch the movie for the sake of the excitement "living your dreams" brings.

Watchability Index : 4.5/5

There are two things about this movie that I would foremost say..

1. This movie is outstanding in terms of script and the handling of the script, obviously a very familiar territory for RGV, though there are some hiccups here and there...

2.Show this movie to each and every telugu cinema director out there, except for the directors of the movies "Bommarillu" and "Aithe". ( Ass licking the heroes backers, elevating the heroes and their capabilities to heights never heard of, playing down the age of the actors and pairing them up with heroines half their age, making a movie for the lack of a script rather than the presence of it, DO NOT CONSTITUTE MOVIE MAKING .. ) just to teach them the art of Directing.

I half expected to see a copy of GodFather -II but, surprisingly, it turned out to be a completely different story.The suspense is very much there and keeps increasing as the movie goes on, if not constant.The twists and turns are truely unexpected.After the first Half-hour you can't help but suspect almost every character in the movie, including the beautiful-but-beginning-to-look-old Ash.

The script is very well written and handled with so much precision that until the last few minutes in the movie, you never realise that something of such a scale is actually possible ( I'm not going to say what that is, cos it would give the movie out.. ).This does have the consequence that Amitabh Bachchan walks away with the best part of the whole movie.I am happy that Amitabh walked away with it, as no one else could have done it with so much style.Even if you dont want to watch the whole movie, just watch the last 10 minutes of the movie, it's really worth it.

-->> SPOILER WARNING <<-- Ash does a pretty good job at acting, though she only cries convincingly.She can't pull of a Big B or Abhishek intense look as yet.Maybe Jaya bachchan could teach her some..No? The final scene where Ash is shown to be the new Don is laughable at best.I mean she definitely cannot pull off an intense look.RGV seemed to realise that and instead adjusted with Ash turning backwards ( and trying to look as serious as possible ) and saying " ek Chai lao".No punch in that scene...

Orkut Post leads to Arrest.

Agreed that obscene comments on public figures is un-acceptable.I am not sure, though, whether that kind of action is necessary.I mean, the internet is filled with millions of posts and messages, probably more perverted than in the orkut post mentioned above, from users around the globe.It was a matter of chance, and bad-luck, for the guy who was arrested.Anyway my point is something else.

A politician lodged a complaint about the post in Pune and the investigation led to a dude in Gurgaon.The police tracked him and brought him back to Pune.All fine.The problem of 'which police station to lodge a complaint' does not seem to creep up here because the exact location of the culprit, and the crime committed is not known ( and also probably because it's a politician lodging the complaint ).Good.Consider the following incident, which happened to a friend on mine in Pune, while he was returning from Hyderabad.

In the train, someone offered him some poisoned biscuits which made him unconscious.He was robbed at night and the thief left without a trace.Bad luck.Let's leave the tragedy part behind.What happens next is interesting.My friend came back to Pune, and went to the nearest police station, nearest to his home, to lodge a complaint.Now the police asked him, did he remember when he fell asleep? and did he have any clue where the thief got off the train?.From what my friend had gathered from fellow passengers, his companion probably got off near Gulbarga ( Karnataka ).This he told to the police, who, now, refused to even take the case as the robbery 'happened' in Karnataka and it did not fall under their jurisdiction. ( That is the most weird WTF moment of my whole life, so far.. ).My friend was finally suggested to go to the Gulbarga Police station, the area where the robbery 'happened' and file a complaint there.

Aha.If only more people knew !!

In both the cases, no one knew where the crime was done and who did it and where it was done.But then, this is India. They just give you more and more reasons to join the politics.Don't They ?
