My net worth decreased by $6,146 dollars, putting my total net worth to -$8,747. Sigh… I really thought I’d have a positive net worth this month. I knew the price jump of my house was too good to be true.

Cash Accounts: No big change from the previous month.

Credit Cards: I paid them before the end of January, but I did some serious shopping last weekend.

Home: the value dropped by $7,500 according to Zillow.

Roth: I’m only adding $25 per month.

Efund: I haven’t been doing much work on the efund. I had to pay for school this month and Maya didn’t get her child support payment for some one reason.

401k: No comment.

Summary: No comment. Too tired to even get sad over the decrease. I think I’m getting a cold.

2009 Goals Short and Sweet

There are so many things I want to do. There are so many things I need to do. But before I start adding new things to my to do list. I need to finish old business.

1. I did not pass the PE test. I will pass that sucker this year!

2. I will finish my novel this year.

3. I will maintain and continue to build my emergency fund.

4. I will lose the weight that I’ve gained since I turned thirty.

5. I will maintain my home.

6. I will complete my thesis and get my masters!

7. I will Publish/submit three short stories per year

That is all! Short and sweet!

My net worth increased by $1,358 dollars due to my house increasing in value and my 401k looking a little better.

Cash Accounts: Despite not having to buy too many Christmas presents, I still spent a lot of money last month. I’m ashamed, but atleast I did not carry over any credit card debt. I also had to pay for my yearly home security fee of $270. I don’t think I’m going to renew it next year.

Credit Cards: A small balance because I’m posting late.

Home: Home value increased by $1,000. It had dropped by $500 last month.

Roth: I’ve cut back on my Roth to focus on the more liquid part of my Emergency Fund.

Efund: is at $3,600 I reached my savings goal for 2008! Just barely.

401k: It’s rebounding a little bit.

Summary: Slow and steady wins the race. I should be at a positive networth by March or April!

Mid Year Review

I received my midyear review today from supervisor (I work for the state which is on a fiscal year calendar). I got an exceeds standard. YEAH! But…….. December I slacked and this month is turning out to be the same. I can’t really blame it on my bro. He wasn’t in the hospital until the end of the month. I can blame it on the holidays but they’re over now and I need to kick it up and get back on track. On the count of five I will get to work: 1, 2, 3, 4…..

Addicted to Saving

My money is funny. I have to pay my school tuition this month so I won’t be able to contribute anything towards my savings accounts. Between my efund and my other account I usually save around $800. I can’t save anything this month and it feels so weird. I feel broke and poor. On the positive side, it does feels good to know that I’ve become addicted to saving.

2008 Financial Goals
1. credit card debt free by July 2008
2. $2,500 Cash Emergency Fund by March 2008
3. Start 529 plan for my kids
4. $2,500 into Roth IRA by December 2008
5. Debt to Income Ratio of 3.1 by December 2008
6. Increase net worth by $16,000

Plan
Can't have goals without a plan on how to achieve them, right? So here is the plan.

1. credit card debt-DONE. On February 5, I become credit card debt free. It's marked on my calendar and I plan on celebrating every year!
I currently have ~$6,000 in cc debt. Believe it or not, 8 months ago I had no cc debt but then I stopped paying attention to my budget and now look!
I'm paying $1,000 towards the debt this month and $3,000 next month (I'm expecting a lump some of money (fingers crossed)). So I'll be entering 2008 with $2,000 in cc debt.
In order to achieve this goal I must pay $330/month. (Doable).
-Contigency..what if I don't get the $3,000 lump sum, making total cc debt for 2008 $5,000. --- Then I'll have to increase payments to $420 and extend payoff deadline to Dec. 1. (Hard but doable)

2. Cash Emergency Fund-DONE I decided to increase the efund goal from $2500 to $3600. I have two kids and I own two houses. I need the extra cushion. In fact my goal will be to save $18,000 before all is said and done.
$2,500 is weak emergency fund for a single mother of two, but I am compromising a bit until I get cc's paid off and more debt paid down.

3. College Savings-DONE $100 down and $25 per month. Isn't much but it's there and it's steadily growing. My daughter is excited and asks me about it monthly.
I have yet to start my kids' college savings plan. I suck. I've been talking about starting it for nine years. Tsk, tsk. Once I pass my P.E. the amount will increase but something is better than nothing.

4. $2,500 into Roth IRA for 2008 ($209/month) -NOT QUITE I decided to focus more on the liquid part of my efund, but I did get this sucker up to $1,000 from $0.
This account will back up as my Emergency fund. It's not the maximum contribution but it's a good start.

5. Debt to Income Ratio of 1.7 (my goal would be from 3.5 to 3.1) by the end of 2008 Done I'm currently at 2.66. But that's because I changed how I calculated the amount. I'm still on my way though!
I recently read an article which said the debt to income ratio for a thirty year old should only be 1.7 times her income. My debt to income ratio is 3.5. Thus, I owe 3 and half times my yearly salary. That is scary. I worked on a few numbers and if things go as planned I should decrease that number to 3.1 by the end of December. It's still pretty high but it'll be better than it was.

6. Increase net worth by $16,000 by the end of December Done. My net worth is ----Drum rollllll--- is -$1,295.54. Wow! My net worth increased by $30,000 due to my home increasing by$12,000 and decreasing my debt by $10,000 among other things!

My current net worth is -32,000 (includes home equity of $25,000), largely due to a student loan debt of $56,000. In order to achieve this goal I will pay off $3,000 of my HELOC since it has a higher interest than my mortgage and student loans.

When A Good Thing Goes bad

My sister called asking to borrow $500. For the first time I said no. I felt bad. I have it, but a goal I have for the new year is not to loan people money. She appreciates the money I loan her but it doesn’t really help her control her finances if she knows, or thinks, she can come and borrow money from me.

How To Keep Your Family Fed Cheaply During a Medical Emergency

My brother is in the hospital and for the past couple of days my family has been living there. I'm cheap and I hate buying (other people) fast food. However, I've been buying fast food for my mom and my brother's wife for the past two days. Unsurprisingly the costs are adding up. So I am going to implement the following in order to save money and ensure my loved ones are getting fed:
1. Now is the time to join the wholesale store in my state (Oklahoma) called Sam's. I've been too cheap to pay the $40 membership fee. Hopefully, I can get someone to split the fee with me.
2. Purchase quick meals like Hamburger Helper; as well as, quick things like burritos, chips, breakfast sandwiches, vegetables and fruit.
3. Purchase a case of bottled water, get a sharpie and put each person's name on them. The kids will still lose the bottles but atleast I tried, right?
4. Purchase plastic silverware and plates.
5. Buy cheap/decent microwavable Tupperware for the home cooked meals and put my name on it. Maybe I can get the dishes back when all is said and done. Most hospitals have plenty of microwaves.
6. Deliver the food as needed in a cooler and restock the essentials (paper plates, water, etc).
7. Keep all receipts so I can deduct it from my emergency fund, if necessary.
Now that I have the plan written down it seems a little expensive, but my brother is going to be in there for a while. My mom is on a limited income and my sister-in-law only gets paid if she works. So yeah It'll be a expensive, but this is why I've been working on my emergency fund. It feels to know that I can take care of my people without worrying about credit card debt or missing out on paying a bill.

Am I missing anything?

Feeling Poor For No Good Reason

I've been feeling really poor. I know I'm not poor. I know I'm well off, but I've had to cut back since I've started paying for school and i was really looking forward to getting a raise once i passed the exam. but i flunked the exam, so no raise. Now I'm beginning to wish that I'd stayed at the stressful consulting job where my raises were not contingent on the test. Sigh. I work for the government and we did have a small market adjustment raise a few months ago, but I put the entire raise in my retirement fund ($120/month). I could stop the retirement withdrawals until I'm finished paying for school, but I'm only missing out on eating out and buying more clothes and eating out. So I'll hold out for a few more months. I'll pass the test next time. The third time is the charm, right? In the mean time, I'll work on making multiple income streams. ::rolls eyes::

I am finished Christmas shopping. I have everything except a laptop per Maya’s request. I’ll probably get the laptop in March around her birthday. After cashing in $195 worth of rewards, I only spent $85.99 on presents. How awesome is that! Save up those rewards it’s worth it.

It wasn't a bad weekend. I slept a lot to make up for the lack of it during the week. No regrets.

Home: I changed the air filters! And my house is still pretty clean. Nice.
Editing: Good. I'm on page 55, on schedule.
Writing: I am about 750 words behind my word count. tsk, tsk. i don't think i'll be able to make it up tonight. but tomorrow looks good.
Spirituality: I didn't go to church today. I haven't been in a while. Tsk, tsk.
Finances: I spent way too much money. $20 at Pizza hut on Friday, $30 at the movies, $23 at a new fancy Chinese restaurant. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Family: Good time with the fam this weekend, i.e. all of the money we spent.

It's 4 in the morning and i've been up since 2. I've been doing this for the past three nights. My sleep pattern is off and that is a very bad thing. I tend to get weepy during the day if I don't get enough sleep.

Home: I was supposed to change the air filters today, but instead I took the kids to pizza hut and come home and went to sleep. I'll do it tomorrow.

Writing: I didn't do any writing yesterday, so I've spent the last two restless hours writing and making up for it. So I'm caught up.

Editing: After I post this, I'll start working on that. I'm slightly behind.

Summary:

Today was a fun and productive day. Tomorrow is going to be a bit of a bitch because i have a forty edited pages due, but I'm up for it. I haven't done anything all semester. So now i gotta make up for it.

Home- Replace air filters in Home and rental home due Friday

Home (Clean)- Good… I need to work on my room this weekend.

Writing- 50 words/day, 250 wds/week, 1000 wds/month-- I have finished the first draft of Coal. I need to set up an editing plan. Done!

Editing-10 pages per day-- Done!

Spiritual- 1) Pray at night with the kids, 2) Read one Christian Themed book per month, 3) volunteer at church twice a month. I still need to down load a book.

Health- Exercise 4 days per week (Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Sunday). 2) One Salad night per week. Exercise has gone out the window, i have a paper due tomorrow. so i've been working on that.

Family- Do 2 planned activities per month with my kids

-shop for Christmas stockings (Saturday).

Work-720 pts/year, 60 pts/month, or 5 or 6 permits per month

I'm at 385 RDI for the year. I am ahead of schedule.

Social- Talk to Two strangers per week

My net worth increased by $718 dollars, putting my total net worth to -$3,959. So I’ll probably still be in the negative by the end of the year. But I think a $22,000 increase is pretty impressive.

Summary:

I’m Switching things up. I’m tired of not living up to my potential. Sometimes I just forget what I plan to do until the next day, but if I remind myself on a daily basis then maybe it’ll be easier to do it.

Cons

Downtown has a high crime rate

Making it hard to receive visitors. I hardly get visitors. Hardly. Ever. Almost never!

Longer commute to family.

Monthly expenses will increase due to increased rent/mortgage

Kids couldn’t really go outside by themselves??

Pros:

Much shorter commute

Apartment complex is completely enclosed

Close to parks, work, school, LIBRARY, restaurants!!!

Living a dream!

Fitness room

Great for biking

I don’t have to mow the yard

I don’t have to deal with those kids playing in the creek

I don’t have to clean up after family get togethers, because an apartment is too small for get togethers!

In addition to monthly obligations there are the upfront costs

After much thought and consideration, I think I’m gonna stay where I am. The economy is shaky and I really need to build my efund before I start living the downtown chic life.

What I should do in the meantime is forget about renting the house below market level. If my sister wants to rent then it’ll have to be at market level, unless I’ve built my efund. But until then I’m gonna work on keeping everything up to date so that if I decided to rent to strangers, everything will already look nice.

Four Year Old and Money

I’m really bad at leaving money lying around. I’ve been meaning to deposit $100 (five $20 bills) for a while. I had it on my kitchen cabinet one morning and the next morning it was gone. I asked my kids if they’d seen it, and they both said no. I asked them repeatedly over the next few days and I still got the same answer. So I was getting my son dressed this morning (I put him on the same jeans he wore Monday), and I searched his pockets because there was a toy sticking out-he’s not supposed to take toys to school- I searched his other pocket to make sure there weren’t any more toys in there and ka-ching this boy had $100 in his pocket (and two more toys). Lesson learned. My daughter has never touched my money, so I’ve always felt safe laying money around. Not any more. Anthony is a pack rat and if something will fit in his pocket it will go in his pocket. Now I’m gonna have to give him the “don’t take things that don’t belong to you speech” every day for the next two weeks.

It was really cute when he smiled and said “I was keeping it safe for you.” I couldn’t even get mad because he was sooo cute when he said it.

Should I move: The Financial Side

I am desperately wanting to rent out my home and move to a certain luxury downtown apartment complex. Sigh… but we need to crunch the numbers.

1. Rent $1,300 max. The actual rent ranges from $1,248-$1,299

2. My mortgage payment is ~$860/month. That would be approximately $440 increase. (I am going to rent it out to my sister and I probably wouldn’t charge more than the mortgage payment)

3. I currently budget $200/month for gas. I would save atleast $100/month from shortening my commute. 440-100=$340

4. My heating bill which averages at $90/month would be gone. 340-90=$250 increase over mortgage payment

5. but my electricity bill ($80) would increase probably by $50. $250 + 50=$300 increase over mortgage payment

6. My home insurance should decrease from $1,200 to at least 1,000 year. $16/month. 300-16= $284 (I have to get a quote)

7. Water bill would be the same.

So If I get the apartment I’m taking away $284 that could go towards my efund or retirement. Tsk, tsk. But we’ll come back to that later. If I do decide to move

I’m gonna have to cut my discretionary spending:

1. Cut efund contributions from $500/month to 400/month. I set my goal at giving $300/month ($3,600/yr). I over estimate because life happens and I want to stay on my five year 6 month of expenses efund goal no matter what. $284-100=$184

2. Cut fast food from 130 to 100. $184-$30=$154

3. Home maintenance fund from $250-$200. $154-$50=$100

4. Cut car fund from $75-$50. $100-$25=$75 increase over mortgage payment

Man, that’s a long list just get an apartment. I’ll be setting myself back in terms of money. That is a big no-no in the world of personal finance. But It’s a dream of mine to live downtown. I was gonna wait until my kids were grown and out of the house. But with them both going to school downtown I can live that dream much sooner than I thought. And with a lot of discipline I can use the amount of time that I save on the commute to work on earning money from blogging and writing. Of course this is all dependent on me passing my PE exam and getting a raise. I took the test in October and I won’t know until the middle of December if I passed it. If I passed the test, I’m still not sure if it would be worth it. ------ Needs more thought and research before I make a decision. Right now I’m feeling too lazy to move anyway.
