Then as life would have it, we grow up and away from those things as we learn about pleasing other people, making lots of money and looking good. Our childhood inspirations get shelved somewhere as we tackle 'making it' in the real world. And then around the thirties we begin asking ourselves why we are unhappy with our career, our partner, even our life.
I began coaching people to take a look back and start from there to find out what their passion/purpose is.

Now as I find myself working in the youth market, I want to encourage teens and young adults to follow their bliss and create a path carved out from what inspires them, interests them and speaks to the things that matter most.

What are your thoughts on the connection between childhood aspirations and adulthood passions. I know for me when I was a kid, I wanted to be a school teacher. What I was really about was being up on a 'stage', engaging with people, sharing information and enjoying it. I wish someone had captured those things and had me create a plan for my career or my life from that.

Instead I got caught up in doing something that others thought was a good fit for me and at the same time I was concerned with making a lot of money and looking good!!

I wonder where my life would have taken me had I started with looking at what I loved as a kid and worked from there

The Secret

I have been waking up every morning these last few days - imagine that!! I have also been listening to the audio version of The Secret. I have seen the movie twice but somehow listening to it again has a different impact on my life. If nothing else all I have to remember is that my thoughts create my reality - what I think about I will attract and create.

As Rhonda Byrne so eloquently puts it:

1) Ask for what you want - this step gets your mind clear
2) Believe that you will get what you ask for
3) Receive - be ready for it

I find that these three steps while so easy to write down really require me to work with my mind. Step 2 requires some extra care on my part and I remain open and trusting to the notion that I will get it. Then of course nothing beats that proof that real life experience will give you when you start to receive the things you want.

C'mon give it a bash - see where it takes you too!!

Today I had a date with myself

During the week I was asked to participate in an event today. My first reaction was to say YES but then I remembered I had set aside today for me. I already had plans to spend the day with me. For the first time choosing me instead of something or someone else felt quite liberating. I didn't feel guilty about saying no because setting aside this time for myself was very important.

So now here I am today, on my date with myself. I didn't really dress for the occasion but I am fully present!!. I knew there were some things I needed to get done around the house so I attended to those first and then I got comfortable on my favorite sofa surrounded by my purple comforter, my ipod, my journal and my dog!! My better half was stuck in his kingdom working on a project so I had all this time to myself.

I closed my eyes as I lay back into a comfortable position and I began my quiet conversation. It went something like this:

There is nothing I need to worry about. No-where I need to be, no-one I need to see and nothing I need to do. I can relax and enjoy this time with myself.

As I lay there I began to feel calm and peaceful. I sank even deeper into my into myself. I called on my guides and helpers in the universe and I asked for their help in moving forward in my life. There are so many things that I want to do with my life and I asked them for some inspiration and most of all guidance.

My mind started to drift and easily I just bought my focus back and continued with:

There is nothing I need to worry about. No-where I need to be, no-one I need to see and nothing I need to do. I can relax and enjoy this time with myself.

This time I felt the cool breeze from the fan blow over me and it felt good. I started to listen for the sounds around me in a way of just letting them be. Just then I heard and plane fly overhead. Probably a small twin engine. I imagined that the plane now directly above me opened up a side door and began dropping all the things I would need to help me along in my journey of life. All the people I would meet, all the tools I would need. Everything was dropping down to me and I imagined myself picking them up, putting them in bag and placing the bag on my back. I had a sense that I now had everything I needed to get on with my life. Everything is ready and waiting.

This meditation was short and sweet. It was unplanned and without thought. I just let the thoughts unfold. I was not trying to control the direction or the content. Tomorrow I will do it again and if nothing else I will remember:

There is nothing I need to worry about. No-where I need to be, no-one I need to see and nothing I need to do. I can relax and enjoy this time with myself.

Choosing a career?

I have been working with kids for the last two years and I have really been inspired about their zest for life. I have had many great conversations with them about their lives and more specifically who or what they want to be when they 'get older'. Almost all of them knew exactly what they wanted to do. Time and time again I found myself being distracted by my ongoing notion that we all inherently know what we want to do with our lives; what we are passionate about but we get taken off course as our childhood turns into teenhood and then adulthood. Then, before you know it your dreams become vacant parking lots where no-one hangs out anymore. You've even forgotten how to get there. Your life has become boring, uninspiring or you just feel that things are not right.

Well I am here to help you get back on track. Help you find your way back to the parking lot to claim your space and thrive. And if you are just getting started with your life decisions then I am here to help you make the best decisions for you that speak to your heart and dreams that will fuel you into tomorrow.

So that all being said . . . please write a few lines about your thoughts on the matter. Please also let us know about what you career you are in . . . one that makes your heart sing and feel alive or one that just gets you by.

You played for hours doing things that you loved. Now you are all grown up and life is not quite the same. You have some unanswered questions:

WHAT TO DO WITH MY LIFE? WHAT IS MY PASSION? WHY AM I NOT FULFILLED? HOW DO I FIND MY DREAM JOB?

Well I am here to tell you that those things that you wanted as a child REALLY are the key to your dreams and is the most important starting place to finding the answers to these questions.

If you have some of these or similar questions then you are in the right place. You may feel you want more, or you have come to realize that you should be doing something else with your life but you are not quite sure what. Maybe you have an inkling about what you want but you lack the tools or strategies you need to move forward.

Taking some time to investigate your childhood activities and past times will give you access to the things that you are passionate about. We never actually lose these passions, we just get off course.

Read here about some people that have followed their passions as a child and now have the career - and life - of their dreams.

Now see if you can write your story from this.
I subscribe to a daily email that I receive from InspireMeToday.com This website has posts from people all over the world which are called Inspirational Luminaries. Gail Goodwin is the founder of this website and she says that she created this site as "I have always been a seeker of information, especially that of a spiritual or motivational nature."

This morning I opened up my emails and as usual there was my email from InspireMeToday. Sometimes I do not read them but today I noticed that the name of this luminary was Zack!! I clicked on the link and I read a story about Zack who was in 3rd grade. He decided to act on an impulse, a gut instinct (what I call inspired action) to follow something that he felt strongly about. I will not go into the whole story here suffice to say that it is well worth reading. I have included a link to the story at the end of my post.

I followed my intuition and took some inspired action by deciding to write about the email I received since what Zack had done in his life speaks right at the heart of what I am about - looking to our childhood passions (the things we loved to do when we were kids) and then using those in the life that we lead now as adults.

I invite you to read his story and then ask yourself"

1) What did I feel strongly about when I was growing up?
2) What inspired action did I take?
3) In my life today how can I find that same inspiration?

I have just finished reading Scott Whittig's book called HOLY IT. It was a short, concise and easy read. He covered some very interesting topics related to finding and creating your IT in life. I love the way he shared his own personal experiences about some of the struggles he had to overcome in order to create his IT and finally bring the book to fruition.

As I was reading though I noticed that I was still struggling to discover my IT. To this end I was still out on a limb. I then began thinking about all the terrific books I had read that talk about passion, purpose, and a dream life - finding it and living it. The finding it part had still eluded me somewhat. I was stuck on how do I discover what my IT is? I hadn't found any good method that I could use to begin to create my IT.

Now I know about meditating, writing down my desires, creating possibilities, using a dream board, allowing the space to just "be" in order to open up . . . I think you know where I am going with this. There are some really great tips and methods that you can use that will give you a peek into living an inspired life.

BUT here's what I keep coming back to . . . HOW DO I FIND WHAT IT IS? How do I wade through some of the mental anguish to find what it is that I really want to do with my life; what my passions are and how I can bundle these into something called a career.

I would find myself taking an interest in all kinds of things and then as soon as that skill or path was somewhat mastered I would move onto something else. I kept wondering about how a person knows what it is that they really want. I witnessed many people who seemed to sail through the process of discovering their passion and creating it. They did not seem to need any guru or self help book. And so it dawned on me that we all must somehow inherently know what it is that we are passionate about and somewhere along the line that path gets interrupted, disrupted and blown off course.

This got me thinking about my childhood and some of the things I was really interested in and what activities would occupy most of my time. What things I would could get in to without a moments hesitation and continue to do for hours without watching the clock or whether it would ever amount to anything.

If you had to ask me what it was that I loved to do as a child I would tell you that it was to stand up in front of my imaginary class and teach. Everyday after school I would come home and go into a small room where I had my blackboard set up with chalk and duster. I would then go ahead and begin my class. I spent hours up in front of my make believe classroom world and spoke and spoke and spoke. When I was in high school I wanted to become a school teacher. I thrived on being able to educate people and talk in front of an audience. Oddly enough though I was very shy and I did not enjoy having to speak in front of the class. When I look back though, those times were mostly about having to talk about things that I was not interested in. I remember specifically having to get up an talk about a subject I was very interested in and although I was nervous to speak, once I began I felt exhilarated and was quite happy to stand up and speak.

As I scanned though my 37 years of life I began to notice that when I was speaking to people either one on one, a group or large audience and I had the opportunity to talk about things that really mattered to me there was a very different way that I would feel. My heart would be racing, I couldn't get the words out fast enough. I spoke with some profound understanding of what it was that I was speaking about. I knew . . . I just knew that this is what I what I wanted to do.

I wanted to speak to and in front of people about life, passion, purpose, power. And I knew that if I followed my intuition and took inspired actions that this would all fit together and work out in a way that I could one day have my dream life.

NOW . . . what if I had had someone around me when I was younger and I was making all the decisions about career path? If I had someone to help me articulate who I was in the world, what I was passionate about and remind me of what I do for hours without concern about time and money. What if that someone said to me that THIS IS YOUR IT and that if you follow it you will certainly have a career that fulfills and inspires you. Well I didn't and of course hind sight is always 20/20. But I do have the experience of it and I do have the tools now to recreate my life the way I want; the way it has me feel inspired and alive. I invite you to share with me where you are in your path and join in the fun of re-discovering your passions with the insight from your childhood.

Being grateful and saying 'I love you'

I recently returned from a wonderful vacation with Zac. On our return I had some time on my flight to re-read one of my books - The Key by Joe Vitale. I began reading the book again before I left for the vacation and I couldn't wait to start reading it on my way home.

He has some very useful tips about getting clear, discovering what you want and creating the mind-set to attract it. It is a must read for everyone. His style of writing is easy and very concise.

There were two things that I have began working with in the last week. One of the first methods he describes is being grateful. We have all heard this from time to time from many of our self-help gurus but what really stuck out for me this time around was being grateful for even the smallest things around me. As I was noticing everything and articulating the things that I was grateful for, I began to feel lighter, happier and even excited to be alive. In case you missed that, I will say that again. As I was noticing everything and articulating the things that I was grateful for, I began to feel lighter, happier and even excited to be alive. When I am grateful for what is, no matter how small, there is a definite shift in how I feel. That feeling allows more life to flow and keeps me from being stuck.

The other technique he recommended was repeating the words 'I love you'. When I come across something that upsets me or become frustrating I silently say I love you. Something shifts in my thinking and subsequently my feelings. This technique is best described using an example.

The other day I was sitting at a public place and I was looking at a lady. Her appearance was shaggy and I remember beginning to make judgments about her. Look at her nails, her hair, her face. I caught myself in this degrading moment and immediately shifted to saying I love you. Not that I love her per say but instead of looking for everything I didn't like I just began saying I love you. I noticed that I was feeling at peace and happy. It took absolutely nothing on this woman's part but just a shift in my thinking!

Now while this is probably a tame example of the use of this I love you exercise, I assure you that I have used in almost every moment and especially when I begin to feel tense. It has been a great way to let go if the stress and feel happy and in gratitude for what is.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go down to Indian Rocks Beach and participate in a sunset yoga class right on the beach. It was a beautiful evening. The weather was quite bearable considering we were on the beach and in the sun. We lay our towels down on the sand and began to face the ocean. The music started and we listened tentatively as Diana began to lead the class.

The whole experience was awesome. I attend Diana's yoga class every Monday night but tonight's class was especially superb given the beautiful surroundings. At the end of the 1 hour class we all sat down to a guided meditation. Diana read us a passage written by the Dalai Lama entitled compassion. As she read I began to notice where in my life I could start practicing more compassion. I looked at the people in my life that I could extend a helpful hand to or just a quick hello to check in with how they are doing.

As I drove home I noticed that my problems and resentments that I had accumulated for the day began to fade as I focused my attention toward compassion for others.

Thank you for the yoga class. Thank you Diana.

Early morning

The morning . . .

This morning my alarm clock goes off at 7:45am. This is 30 minutes before it regularly goes off. Last night I had decided to wake up early and take Miss Bell for a walk before I began my day. Needless to say, once I heard the piercing sound of the alarm all I wanted to do was to roll over and go back to sleep.

In my mind I was going back and forth 'should I go or should I just carry on sleeping'. I was being very creative about my reasons as to why I should keep sleeping. Honestly it was sheer guilt that got me out of bed. I had promised myself that I would get up and take Miss Bell for a walk and I would rather the inconvenience of getting up early than the guilt of not taking her out. Nowhere along the way did I ever consider that the walk would be good for me.

So at exactly 7:07am we left the house. I was yawning and Miss Bell was eager to get going. We walked our usual route; about a 40 minute one. I began to notice a shift in how I was feeling. For no apparent reason I began to feel at peace and quite content. I kept looking around me and I had such a sense of gratitude.

Now I am not one for all these airy fairy kinda things but this was an experience that really captivated me. When I returned home I had energy and a desire to start my day. The thing I noticed most was that even though there were things going on around me that I didn't like and would have normally become easily irritated by, something inside me remained constant and I just brushed those things by. I had a real experience of what it is like to remain in my own body and keep my inner perspective strong and purposeful, regardless of what is going on outside of me.

I also noticed during my day at the office that things seemed to flow and I was able to accomplish quite a few different tasks along the way. It reminded me about something I had read once. I will not attempt to quote it word for word, but it went something like this. The universe (or life force, or God or god or universal energy - or whatever term you subscribe to)is waiting for us to be in a space a.k.a a frame of heart and mind so that we can receive the events, thoughts, feelings or desires that will assist us in completing our life's purpose. These come to us in the form of small doses each day. So each day if we prepare ourselves mentally, spiritually and emotionally we will open ourselves up to our life as it is meant to be.

Today was one of those days. And while I still got annoyed about something and while I still had moments of restlessness and lethargy, there was an inner strength and knowing that life is unfolding perfectly!

I want to know . . .

Do you ever catch yourself doing something for hours and then wondering where the time went to?

Do you have a longing to express yourself in a way that makes your heart sing?

Do you know there is something you have that by sharing it with the rest of the world will make you shine and the world resonate?

We all have something we are passionate about; that speaks to our soul. What a wonderful feeling you would say . . . being able to relinquish a couple of financial burdens and feel lighter about it all. As I sit here though, there is a heaviness that lingers in my body and an empty feeling that envelops my heart. The sadness that ripples along as the after affects of losing my Mom are brought up to bear.

I miss her so very much and it's times like these that I am reminded of the ebb and flow of grief and the time that must pass in order to move on. It seems that while a wonderful gift has been bestowed upon me, it comes at a hefty price.

As most of you will know my mom and I shared a rather tumultuous relationship at times. Since I have grown from teenager to woman I have come to understand, appreciate and totally admire my mother. It was through my own life experiences that I began to hold my mom in more of an empathetic and completely compassionate light. These times of development and struggle for me, evoked the strength I began to see in my mom. She was an amazing human being and remains to be a powerful being in my life. I thought I would just post them here for fun. (unedited versions).

At some point in our life we question why we are doing the work that we do and most times it is about not being fulfilled ,alive and passionate about what we do. So often we choose a career for ourselves based on every other desire than our own, and as a result our passions and dreams are left behind as we make our way along a career path that is founded on looking good and pleasing others. Now while I know that this is not the case for all people it is for most. I have a program that I will be beginning next year at an elementary school in St Pete. The program is call ' Young People Choose' and it focuses on a child's dream or passion ; how to discover it and create it into a career. Then as they move into adulthood they can work toward their dream living a life of passion, purpose and power.

Wednesday, December 22, 2004 3:10:02 PM

I want to offer members a FREE teleclass each month around a topic that I am finding is very sought after in the career world. Essentially members sign up with xxx.com because they are looking for a job. There are some excellent tools available to them for resume building, interviewing, goal setting etc. I want to add another tool to your selection one that allows a person the opportunity to discover what they truly want to do with their life. We all had dreams and desires of what we wanted to do with our lives and very few of us actually followed them. I offer a short teleclass called 'The Trip'. It was created around four distinctions; having a fulfilling and lasting career; passion, purpose and power. Discover what you are passionate about (so many people do not have a clue then sit with frustration and disappointment), your passion will fuel your purpose and this will unleash your power. Can you imagine what it would be like to be doing something that you are REALLY passionate about? Then what it would be like for the people (fellow employees, customers) to work with you. There are the pioneers out there who knew that building a career around 'The Trip' was what was needed for them to be happy and fulfilled. One pioneer that comes to mind is Richard Branson of VIRGIN, another is Howard Schultz of STARBUCKS and let's not forget our GOOGLE friends.

Tuesday, January 04, 2005 1:31:10 PM

Where to go from here

So as I sit and stare at my one post blog, I wonder where does a man (or woman) go from here. I turn to my right and ask the one person who motivated me to begin this blog. His answer is simple; "just keep posting and see where it takes you"

That comment reminded me of some of the things I have learnt in my almost 37 years of existence. I remember a conversation I had once with a very dear friend of mine. As we sat talking about life stuff and she expounded on some her life's adventures, I made a comment to her about how 'boring' my life was. That there were no major events that had occurred that I could say I had learnt something from or made decisions about. Little did I know that at 24 years of age life is pretty straightforward. When I decided to show up in my life as someone that wanted to play BIG and take responsibility for the course it was taking, then the adventure began. Stay tuned for the next development . . .

Goals, goals, goals

So what happens when we set a goal for ourselves and we don't hit the mark? What happened along the way? Two things to consider when setting goals:

1) Ask yourself why you want this goal? Spend some time thinking about what it means to you to have this accomplished. How will it make you feel? Look a little deeper than it will make me happy or feel good. This short step helps you create your intentions for what you want and this is the fuel for creating it.
2) Make your goal VISIBLE. Set it out somewhere for you to see everyday. Being reminded of what you want to achieve is like a reset for your mind that sometimes forgets!!
