Well, hello, strangers. First, sincere apologies to those of you who have faithfully followed my blog, only to be left in the lurch with no warning. I still can't believe it's been that long since I posted!

Life has a funny way of throwing a wrench I into your routine. Yes, we moved into a manufactured home community in 2017. We enjoyed it for the most part, but skyrocketing rents in Las Vegas forced us to consider a move to a 55+ independent living complex in August of last year (2024). We couldn't be happier. Munchie cat had passed on before that at a ripe old age but Charlie is still hanging there, as feisty as ever - just frostier in the snout.

Moving was as chaotic and challenging as we remembered it. The waiting for confirmation of an apartment, qualifying for it with all the necessary paperwork, pet fees and holding fees and so on. Boxes piled halfway to the ceiling in the living and dining room while trying to keep an aisle free to go in and out and around all our "stuff." The cost of moving was terrible. That was what kept us from moving sooner! But after a frenetic month or two of prepping, downsizing all our junk, organizing, packing, giving stuff away that we would no longer use, saying goodbye tearfully with a couple of neighbors since we were moving to a different part of Vegas, we finally got to the big day. And big it was! Hours and hours of them loading the truck, extra expenses that we hadn't realized that we would be charged for, boxes packed in 2 BR apartment that used to be in a 3 BR manufactured home to cram into our new digs. And then the days of unpacking. Let's be honest, the MONTH or more of finding a space for everything!

Finally, we were done. And not having enough chaos in our lives, we decided to add a "brother from another mother" to the mix a couple of months ago. Now Charliee has a feisty, playful, mischievous Romey to terrorize him and keep him on his feet protecting his territory and his toys, not to mention his food bowl!

Of course, we got Romey from The Animal Foundation and of course, they had no clue about his nature when we adopted him. "They" said that he didn't like you looking him in the eye, he didn't like hugs or confinement and he didn't like being touched. Right about that when you are a stranger, but within a couple of weeks he was cuddling with us, stretching out in my lap while I watched TV, barking at dogs and people he didn't know, and allowed pats on the head from those he did. It didn't take long at all for him to adapt. We learned the last time we adopted to take others' observations with a grain of salt. Say hi to our new little man:

Life has certainly been interesting. We decided to keep his current name, Rome (funny because that is the name of our street) but softened it to Romey because it is easier to call to him. The vet thought he was a senior but he isn't: we figure he is about 5 years old instead of the 7-10 years they thought. He is too spry, feisty, and quick to be a senior dog, in our opinion and with our experience.

He loves his toys (at first hugging and licking them and then taking the stuffing out of them), lets us know what he needs and wants (he has a deep WOOF rather than a bark like Charlie) and as near as we can tell, he is a standard doxie mix. That is something the vet and we agreed on. We just can't figure out what the mix is! No way does Charlie let him have HIS toys. We have those on the bed.

Romey wouldn't go on the couch for a long time, even with the ramp and he still prefers to be lifted and cuddled by me when he wants "upies." It has been an adjustment. He is a barker and we are trying to train that out of him but it won't be any easier than it was with Charlie. Dogs have their nature and the best you can do is work with them. Since walking is not as easy with 2 dogs, Mike generally runs with Romey while I plod along with Charlie at our own pace. I must say that when I take Romey for his morning stroll, he is a very good boy and listens carefully to what I tell him...until he sees a maintenance guy with a bucket or leaf blower, or another person shoots up unexpectedly in a stroller or cart. Then all bets are off and barkfest ensues.

Charlie doesn't mind the company. When we go out, he just goes up to his territory on our bed when Romey gets too active. Then Romey has the living room to himself and revels in it. Their personalities are definitely independent and wary, like most doxies, but so loving in such different ways. And they love their food and treats! They make a pretty good mix - one chill and the other more active - and we are glad to be a two-pup family.

For those of you who adopt, bless you. You will make a lifetime of difference to your new family member and they will give a lifetime of love and devotion to you. Visit a pet a couple of times before taking them home. Don't necessarily listen to staff who have only dealt with them in an institutional setting where they may be overwhelmed by the chaos, barking, or lack of attention. Make your own judgment. Please consider adopting a new friend, if you have the time, space, and patience. It is an act of love that will be returned tenfold. Please support your local shelter with donations of blankets, dog food, toys, and towels!

Living La Vida Local with Charlie and Munchie

We survived. That's about all we can say about our latest big move to a community filled with pet lovers and folks our age.

Throughout the month of April our home was a mine field filled with boxes upon boxes upon bags and more. A veritable "tower of terror." The pets found it fascinating although once we started moving the stuff over to the new place (when we took possession after the beginning of the month) Munchie decided that he had better find a good box to hide in so we didn't forget him while Charlie just stuck close.

We brought Charlie with us on as many trips as possible to the place before moving in and by the third time, he knew he was home. Poor Munchie didn't have that opportunity, being a cat who doesn't like being in a carrier, so his first exposure was the day we actually had the movers show up. So, in essence, Charlie spent his 6th birthday moving - and he couldn't be happier.

This place has a huge green area with ample room to roll and roam. We can take a different route each day (almost got lost the first day) and there are so many pups to play with and so many hoo-mans to avoid! And he can even go outside on the patio to bark at passersby! Who could ask for more!

So, life is settling into a routine now and while he would rather have both of us at home at all times, little things like working to buy Charlie treats makes that pretty much impossible. He and Munchie have both found their favorite places to sleep and keep vigil during the past few weeks and that makes us happier than ever.

Christmas 2015 with Charlie and Munchie

Charlie was more than ready for the holidays this year. His dad kept telling him that "Santy Paws" was coming, and we really think that he was geared up to go by the time Christmas week finally got here. Same as we did, each pet got something out of their stocking the 4 days before Christmas and they loved their treats and treasures.

On Christmas day, the smell of ham baking had Charlie's nose up in the air. He liked his old sweater (pictured) better than his new jacket because the hood annoyed him, but with the unusually cold weather, he got to appreciate it.

Unfortunately, so far Munchie likes Charlie's new bed better than he does, though Charlie has been spotted sneaking onto it to cuddle with his new toys a few times. We moved it under the coffee table for now, until all the Christmas stuff and tree are put away. Then he will make it his own.

Munchie-cat, at his advanced age, prefers snoozing and snacking to most anything else, though they both certainly enjoyed their Christmas dinners!

Hi, all!

Exciting news to share with everyone. I am starting a new venture that's beginning with some premium dog treats that I will be offering for sale.

I got up early and figured out my "Big Six" dog biscuit recipes. They are: Elvis Pupsley Biscuits, Pumpkin Pizzazz, Tail Waggers, Puppy Paws, Barkley's Blueberry-Apple Biscuits and Charlie's Mini Carrot Pupcakes smile emoticon I am drying my own blueberries as I type this. Charlie will be in 'hog heaven' for the next while as I perfect these recipes before offering them for sale and believe me, so far they are Charlie tested and very much approved (he doesn't even want his commercial treats anymore!).

The plan is to sell these treats in variety packs of 6 or 12 biscuits. I am still working on the financial aspect, and shipping logistics, but I plan to box them in cute tins or boxes as part of the presentation.

Once everything is figured out, and my camera is once more functional. I will post pictures of these treats here, on my page and in my Little Cook blog. The operation should be a 'go' within the next week or so.

A Sad Dog's Tale - or When We Went on Vacation Without Charlie

It's been a while since the last post - far too long, in fact - and Charlie decided that he wanted to do this one in the words of a Dog. I will simply translate his story of our 2 week vacation to Disney World and how he felt while we were gone.

"I liked turkey days. Many treats and happy times. Many silly times when I was told to hold still while I wore my silly hat and collar. Then the BIG TREE was emptied of all the shinies and the turkey smell went away. The loud machine roared and then it was quiet and Mom had 'cleaned up after Christmas,' or that's what they said. My toys were ok and that's all that mattered. I checked and all my parts were still there, so THERE, loud machine!

My mom and dad (the soft Alpha and the one who cuddles) told me they were going away and would be back soon. They were very nice to me, patting me and calling me GOOD BOY, which I like, but I sensed some nervousness on their part. What did they mean "going away?" What was that and how would it affect my walkies and treats?

Those big soft boxes on wheels grew and got fatter with stuff pushed inside as dindin turned to walkies and then snack time. There was something new in the air - a smell that was a bit bitter and sweet at the same time. They kept saying they were "excited but nervous" about leaving me. What did that mean? They brought a NEW FRIEND to meet me. Mom said she was Peggy and that she would play with me and give me snackies. That's nice, but why not Mom? What was happening?

Breakfast turned to snack time after walkies followed by naptime and then to lunch time and walkies and snack and walk time once more. It got dark, it got light and then the big boxes got moved into the living room. Peggy came to see me and we got to like each other. Grumpy CAT was not pleased. He told me this had happened before and that they were GOING AWAY. What was that? Breakfast had always turned to naptime and lunch time and walkies before dindin and bedtime for as long as I could remember. The last time someone had GONE AWAY I had been ALONE. I was not pleased. I put my head down flat on my paws in protest when I saw them get dressed in their outer fur. I turned my head away. They smiled and patted me. I stayed not pleased until they left, then ran to the window to see if they would come back. They did not. My protest had not been noticed! The CAT was also displeased. He opened one eye and closed it again to nap. I felt I had no choice but to do the same.

Later, the door opened. My tail wagged and my tongue came out. I was happy. My protest HAD been noticed and my humans were home. NO, it was Peggy, the quiet one who smelled nice and was calm. Where were Mom and Dad? She patted me and said it was ok and put on my leash. I went walkies with her, but it was different. She gave CAT and me a snack. We would not eat them, so she put them by our dishes. She stayed to pat us, then left. All alone with CAT again. I was not pleased. After finally deciding to eat my snack - but not my food - I went to sleep. The door opened again. Once more I was fooled. It was Peggy. I was growing to like her, even though when she came, Mom and Dad were GONE. CAT was no company, so I was glad that she sat with me and brushed my hair. After some time, even CAT grew to like her and purred when she brushed his hair. How odd. Days went by, breakfast into light and snacks and walkies, then naptime until she came for lunch and on and on. She gave me extra treats like peanut butter smushed into my food and little bits of cheese. At least someone hadn't forgotten me. Even CAT was not being grumpy. I guess he was happy that I was there.

Years later, the door opened and it was Mom and Dad! They laughed when I gave an undignified squeak when I saw them. It just came out! I was so happy! They were back! I got all my favorite toys to show them. CAT was winding around them and me. All was right with the world! We had walkies, we had snack, I napped and they were still there! At night time I slept with Mom and during the daytime I slept with dad. It was good and right. I kept peeking to make sure they were really there. When Peggy came by, I was happy to see her, but I kept rolling my eyes toward Mom while they were making those annoying talking noises. My tail wagged and my eyes rolled. They laughed. But it was good and everyone was happy. I don't know what "missed means," but I think it means that while they were away I was not happy and now that they are here, I am a happy boy. Even CAT is trying to scratch me again, so all is good. Time for a nap! That is my story."

Charlie Gets a Haircut

It's been quite a while since my last post. Too be honest things have been a bit hectic around here while life has settled down to a dull roar (if that makes any sense at all!). But now something exciting has happened and I have to share.

Charlie went to the groomer and had his first haircut! We were a bit nervous, because, being a doxie mix, he was a bit shy and wary of people. I called the groomer ahead of time and spoke with her, and she assured me that was ok, they were used to it, so off we went on our great adventure.

We arrived and Charlie shied away, having been to the Banfield Animal Hospital for shots not long before. He did NOT enjoy that at all, and the smell put him off. But being a good boy, with a bit of reassurance, he trotted into the PetSmart store with me on his leash, just dragging a bit as we passed the vet's office. What a wonderful place it is! Dogs wandering around on leashes, pet 'parents' talking, and the groomers were really great. They talked quietly to him as I signed him in, and he touched noses with a couple of pups. He was interested in everything.

The woman put the short leash on him and we reassured him we would be back soon - I think that was his biggest fear, that he would be left there.

After running errands for a couple of hours, we returned and at first couldn't spot him, but then we saw this sleek, stylish black dog having his face and ears trimmed, and looked at each other remarking "Is that Charlie?" Sure enough, his ears perked up as he heard our voices.

Gone was the little fuzz-bucket that we had come to recognize as our dog. He looked like a pup - but one that we have never seen since his hair had always been long and wavy! His tail was still fuzzy and he looked like a fox. We had no idea he was so well-proportioned, or "handsome," as the lady said with a laugh when she greeted us. What a pleasant surprise. The pile of hair looked like another dog lying on the floor!

We wished we had done that before the trip we took to Sunset Park a couple of weeks ago. He was really warm wandering around the green spaces in the shade, looking at the ducks and sniffing every blade of grass. Good thing we had brought along some water for him to drink! He would have preferred to be sleek and handsome, I think.

So now, when we go to the park to visit the duck pond while he investigates every twig, blade of grass and new smell along the way, we will do so with a happy, perky pup in tow. And yes, we will be having him groomed as regularly as we can afford, now that we know how great he looks with his new 'do.' He sure seems proud of all the accolades and attention :) Happy National Pup's Day from the whole family.

Isn't it funny how a dog can make a home? in our second year of life with Charlie, it's unimaginable to envision ourselves without him. We have decided not to vacation for the time-being unless we can take him with us. It's all part of dog ownership, especially when your furry friend decides you are the only family he wants.

Charlie's skittishness with other humans continues. We've figured it is partly because he is so BUSY outside, sniffing every leaf and blade of grass, and also because other humans don't have 4 legs so they are of no consequence. He permits other dogs to sniff him, standing very still until the introductions are made and then it's time for play!

Doxies possess 6 different personality traits:

Hunting and tracking
Digging
Born athletes
Being hams
Loyalty
Intelligence

Cocker Spaniels are:

Loyal
Intelligent
Sociable
Happy
Loving

So what we have in Charlie is a sociable, loving, happy little man who enjoys playing, clowning around and who is endearingly loyal. Add intelligence to the mix and you can see why he's such a part of our family.

Most dog lovers will describe their breed as the best or the smartest. We would argue that doxies stand in a class all their own. I have previously owned poodle and poodle/terrier mixes and these breeds are also loyal, intelligent and sensitive. But a doxie is a dog that has to be experienced to be believed. Add in the warm and cuddly Cocker Spaniel into the mix and you have the "Docker," like Charlie.

We simply love this little guy, shedding or not. And he loves us. ls that not what it's all about? Can't wait to get Charlie a "pet" to love :) Probably another doxie, if we are lucky.

It's almost impossible to believe that Charlie has been with us for over a year now, but then again, it's difficult to imagine life without him, too! He loves being told he's a "good boy" and he really is!

And yes, dogs do learn new tricks:

He's learned to be annoying in the kitchen: jumping up and banging the cupboard door when I am preparing dinner or snacks.
He's also learned that it's ok to sit with his head on my knee when I am eating something in the living room because he will eventually get either a left-over or the plate to lick if he is patient.
Charlie has discovered that if he pesters dad at the computer he will get picked up and can lie on dad's lap, but if he comes to me, he puts his head on my foot, noses me or stands with his paw on my knee, and once I pet him and tell him he's good, he happily goes to play.
He's discovered the joy of all his squeaky toys, especially when it comes to bedtime and squeaking like mad before he falls asleep.
He's found out that it's comfy squashed between us in bed and giving me a kiss before falling asleep, but dad would rather have a loving look than a kiss, thank you very much :)
He's good at "riding shotgun" in the car with dad, loving the feel of the breeze as it rushes over his face, but then he also enjoys lying on the floor on the passenger side of the car when he's had enough of the wind. He also loves 'helping' to pick me up when dad gives me a ride home after work.
He has an amazing sense of smell and can "truffle snout" his way around the entire outside of the apartment complex, ignoring everyone who says "Hi, Charlie" except Ashley.
Things do smell just as good the second, third and fourth time you discover a scent!
He enjoys walking at heel with mom and taking dad for walks with the longer leash. All that training finally paid off!
He is very vigilant and careful when "walking mom" when it's dark outside, even going so far as to growl if he doesn't know someone. This is new!
He's found that this apartment is simply not big enough to hide all his rawhide chews. He has no idea why we laugh at him when he tries so hard to conceal a chew in his mouth before hiding it (it looks like tusks!).
He's a playing machine! He loves tearing around the apartment like a loony pup,up and down and off the bed and couch and around again. Especially when mom's playing the "rawrrrr" game, chasing him until we're both panting.
He and Munchie kiss when he goes outside and comes back in again (probably because Munchie knows he will get a treat) and they sometimes headbutt and kiss just because. Also new.

Consider getting your own furry forever friend through animal adoption or even consider fostering a pet if you have time and room to do so. You won't be sorry, but remember, a forever friend IS forever!

The "baby"

Charlie is 2 now, a big boy, except when it comes to "Dad." He has taken to lying on Mike's lap when he's on the computer or watching TV. Suddenly the 'big dog' turns to mush (and so does Mike!)

Charlie likes nothing more than to lie on his back, nestled on your lap, and woe betide you if you want to move! He's learned that "Dad" sits still a lot longer than "Mom" does, so naturally, he sits and stares at Mike until he's picked up. With me, he snuggles in my yarn or with his head on my lap while I am crocheting, reading or watching TV. Sometimes he nestles at my feet until he has enough and clambers his way onto my lap to stare in my eyes until I pick him up and play with him. He loves it when Mike plays catch with him, or when I chase him around the apartment or we play "Where's Charlie" under the sheets. And he still loves to play "Catch the Cat" with Munchie, or when Munchie deigns to rub against him or be affectionate.

Who said dogs weren't adaptable?

He still continues to 'play strange' outside with folks he doesn't know well, while whining when he hears his favorite 'girl' or sees her little greyhound outside. Duchess whines and howls whenever she sees him too. Our "boy" seems to have found a 'girlfriend!' The good thing is, he's every dog's friend, even though many of his dog friends have moved. I've never figured why, although he plays strange, he has the habit of turning to run after the person he's just snubbed when they turn away!

His favorite foods seem to be peanut butter, cheese (hence Chuckie the Cheese Dog), bacon, sausages and chicken. He and Munchie don't vie for the same things (except chicken): Munchie prefers pasta sauce. Charlie is so/so about that. He doesn't get that many treats and sure doesn't eat much in the way of 'people food,' since he's been a dry dog food pup since we first got him.

He's showing the Doxie propensity for sniffing and stubbornness - I see how they may have been truffle dogs. I guess that comes from his Cocker Spaniel side and their place in hunting. Sometimes I am amazed his sniffer still works! When he gets concentrated on a scent, he can be at the same spot for ten minutes if not prodded to move! Sheesh.

He loves riding in the car, too. Head out the window, ears flapping in the breeze, big smile on his face and tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then, he's all dog! When I am in the car, he sits on my lap with his chin on the edge of the car window, watching the world go by, perking up now and then and settling down again.

He and Munchie got their Easter treats too, though we stopped short of Easter baskets for them. They have their favorite store-bought treats that they get for being 'good,' generally after Charlie's done all the work and went outside. Munchie feels entitled too, cat that he is. And no, we haven't bought him any new clothes.

It's a small family but a good one. Everyone has their place and everyone is comfortable with their lot in life. Who could ask for more?

"Bone Appetit!" Treats for all good dogs and cats

Finally, back again after a little hiatus, just in time to start gathering ideas for Charlie's second birthday!

This month, our little 'man' will have been with us for a whole year, which means he's turning 2, as difficult as that is to imagine. And how he's grown! Now he calmly greets new pets in the complex, letting them sniff him before running circles around him. He's gotten to know all the kids, which means he is a popular little guy when they are playing outside. While he still "plays shy" with adults, especially those with something in their hands, he has his definite favorites. And he's still "daddy's boy" while watching TV or cuddling, and "mommy's boy" at meal time. Just like a kid :)

I wanted to get a couple of recipes out to you for your pet's special occasion. We're trying to keep him from eating fatty foods or stuff that isn't healthy for him, and of course, when HE has a treat, MUNCHIE has to have a treat, so here are a few recipes from our friends at Betty Crocker. "Bone Appetit" (yeah, I know that's bad, but someone had to say it :)

Homemade Dog Treats:

Cheesy Bacon Biscuits

These super-easy biscuits are like bacon cheeseburgers for dogs! I have to make these for Charlie's birthday - two of his favorite flavors in one.

3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 stick margarine, softened
1 egg
1 ½ cups regular oats, uncooked
1 cup shredded cheese
2/3 cup wheat germ
1/2 pound crumbled bacon or bacon bits

Mix together butter and sugar, then beat in the egg and baking soda. Slowly add flour and then stir in remaining ingredients. Using a teaspoon, form dough into small balls on ungreased or lightly greased baking sheets. For thinner biscuits, spread flour on the bottom of a pan and flatten cookies. Bake at 350 degrees for 16 minutes. Cool before serving.

Apple Cinnamon Drops

Try topping these with a dab of peanut butter to make these sweet treats even more appealing to your pup.

1 large apple, minced
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup of water
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup oatmeal
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350 ° F (180 ° C). In a large bowl, combine the minced apple bits, honey, water, cinnamon, and oatmeal. Gradually blend in the wheat flour. Spoon the dough by rounded teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Adjust the size of the drops based on how big a treat you like to feed your dog. Bake for 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325 ° F, then return cookies to oven and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Let the drops cool before serving. Makes about 3 dozen crunchy cookies, depending on how big you make them. (I may even try one of these)

Homemade Cat Treats:

Tuna Pops

If your cats come running to the sound of a can opening in hopes of getting some tuna, they’ll love these easy frozen tuna popsicles. Tuna juice is great for your cat’s health.

Canned tuna in water
Ice cube tray(s)

Open your cans of tuna, as many as you like, and drain the tuna juice into a small bowl. Add some water to the juice, depending on how many cubes you want to make. Pour your tuna-water mixture into the ice cube trays and freeze them overnight. Now you’ve got a great pre-made treat to give your cats anytime!

Tuna Cookies

What to do with all that leftover tuna from making Tuna Pops? Make some Tuna Cookies, of course! The catnip garnish is a nice touch for your kitty connoisseur. Break them into small bits since that's what cats prefer! Turn them into dog treats by substituting canned chicken for canned tuna (you may even want to add some shredded cheese for dogs).

¼ cup flour
1 can tuna
1 egg
1/4 cup water
Catnip for garnish
Baking sheet
Rolling pin (optional)

Preheat oven to 350. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Shape dough into very small, bite-size balls and flatten on lightly greased baking sheets. For extra baking fun, roll dough onto a floured surface with a rolling pin and cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Bake for 20 minutes or until cookies are firm. Sprinkle catnip on top of each cookie. Be sure to let them cool completely before giving them to your cat. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge to keep them fresh.

Charlie Gets Sick

Poor Charlie

Charlie got sick this weekend. We don't really know why: garbage gastritis (he tends to try scarf stuff from off the ground outside), too many treats (yep, we're sometimes guilty of this), giving him the wrong treats (there's one that makes him yucky if he gets it too often), sneaking something nasty from Munchie's litter box, a cold, a virus or just clearing out his system.

Dogs get sick. It's a fact of life that no matter how healthy your dog is, you will eventually face the fun and joy of diarrhea, vomiting or both. There is a reason the old saying is "sick as a dog!" The good thing is, the healthy dog rebounds with a cold wet nose, wagging tail and happy snuggles with relative speed. The problem is, it's never fast enough when you feel slightly panicky that he's sick to begin with.

I woke up Saturday morning to (if you will excuse the expression) a huge pile of "puddin' poo" on the bathroom floor. Even when sick, Charlie sticks to laminate surfaces rather than the rug, thank goodness! I got up early because I knew he was not feeling good. He was trembling slightly when he was pressed up against me in bed, he was licking his lips and swallowing over and over and his nose wasn't the cold wet weapon of choice I normally feel on my arm or back. I couldn't believe he had 'done the deed' inside, but when he looked shifty-eyed and guilty and bowed to me, I knew it was his doing and immediate took him outside.

The nice thing about this complex is we all greet each other with pj pants on and Medusa hair. No one judges. I didn't even take the time to put on my glasses, just on with the leash and out with the Charlie. Good thing I did, because he proceeded to do it again, to a smaller degree, on the grass around the corner from our apartment. I praised him for waiting until he got outside, took him home and gave him a bath, cutting the wealth of hair from underneath his tail and on his bottom to make clean-up easier.

Have I mentioned yet how glamorous owning a dog can be?

He enjoyed the bath, and after I dried him (and he scootched himself out around the living room) he settled down for a sleep. The only treat I gave him was a bit of cheese, which made him ecstatic.

Having had pups for years, I kind of have a game-plan when dogs are sick:

Cut out the extras. Just stick to bland food such as rice with a bit of meat and veggies or the regular dog food.
If you want to give a bit of a treat, cheese is a good binder and the favorite of most dogs.
Give your pup a bath. It calms them, cleans them and saves them cleaning up their own mess. Cut off the extra hair if you have a furry wonder like Charlie. It saves a lot of grief.
Don't give them any milk products (other than cheese) while they are down and under. It can affect their stomach and make them even more sick.
Cut back on the flavored rawhide or other goodies. The beef flavoring can actually make them sick to begin with if they have too many of this sort of treat and can exacerbate their vomiting or diarrhea.
Use bottled water. The problem could be in the water from the tap. This doesn't have to be a permanent thing, but in Spring, especially there can be bacteria in the water that affects your pup's tummy.
Check the grounds around your place to make sure there is no junk or cigarettes or anything else your pup can sink their teeth into and scarf down. I did the patrol after Charlie fell asleep.
Bring them outside a little more often, to encourage 'going'outside rather than inside. Pet them and praise them when they don't mess the carpet.
Let your pup sleep as long as he wants. Some may sleep the balance of the day and wake up feeling much better. Chances are, their tummy ache cut into their sleep the day or night before. Sometimes all any of us needs is a good sleep.
Start re-feeding slow and easy. No junk for a bit, a bare minimum of treats. If your pup is still sick after a couple of days, he may get dehydrated and you may want to consider a visit to the vet.

You sometimes forget just how much your pet means to you until they are 'under the weather.' It's easy to take their health for granted, and when they are young, it's difficult to imagine what life would be like without them. Both Mike and I pale at the thought of life without Charlie. Munchie is getting up there - he's going to be 14 next month- but Charlie will only be 2 years old at that time, and somehow while you can make your peace with the impending possibility of losing an older pet, it's not to easy to consider losing your younger kid.

The main problem isn't what you feed your dog, most of the time: it's what he ingests outside. I don't know why a cigarette or a piece of gristle by the BBQ may appeal to them, or a dried out piece of bagel or a wrapper. No one really understands a dog's taste. Try get what they snag off the ground out of their mouths right away. I know it's difficult - they clench their teeth and may even growl. If you put your finger at the open space at the back of their teeth (right at the back of their muzzle), their mouths will open (it's a reflex) and you may be able to scoop it out.

The same goes for the home. You may have left an elastic band or twist tie lying around, and in playing with it, dogs or cats have been known to ingest it. Don't give your dog potatoes, alcohol (you know this!), or chocolate. Be careful of house plants and wrappers. If they grab something off your plate, there's not much you can do, but do whatever you can to make home safe for them. And just like children, don't let strangers give them treats, since it may not be good for their diet.

Enjoy your pets when they are well and celebrate life with them, but remember that illness is part of life, too, and we've all taken on that responsibility when we adopted or purchased them. L'chaim!

Charlie's Christmas Day

As Christmas got closer and closer, Charlie got a little more excited. He knew something was up with all the wrapping of gifts, the sneaking around and hiding things and especially when we tried his reindeer collar and ears on for the first time. He even got to tolerate wearing them after a couple of false starts.

On Christmas Day, his nose didn't stop twitching, sniffing ham in the oven. This time, when our buddy Pam came over, he only barked for a bit before recognizing her and settling down on her lap for a good old-fashioned petting. Imagine, 3 pairs of hands to pat him and rub his ears instead of 2! Could any little dog ask for anything more? Even he and Munchie achieved a Christmas truce!

He loved his new toys, especially the soft, fuzzy ones. He even got the idea of taking a few out of the stocking himself. I got the chance to wash his old toys (finally). He didn't much like that but he was occupied. He doesn't like squishy rubber or hard toys, he likes the ones that 'talk' or make music, the stuffy ones. I think that if Munchie doesn't go into his crinkly Santa bag soon, Charlie may end up peering out of it soon.

We had the best Christmas with out little buddy. It's hard to imagine life without his little shiny eyes and big wet black nose. We can't imagine not having him insisting upon being cradled when we're watching TV, or his nose poking us for attention. It's tough to imagine not having him squished between us in bed or not laughing at his earnest expressions when he 'talks' to us and we answer him. We look forward to what is yet to come.

Charlie's hopeful Turkey Look

We survived Thanksgiving with no damage to the turkey and no fights between the "kids." Charlie even proved, after the first five minutes of barking at our guest, that he could be a welcome host to our best friend. She was impressed at how closely he watched her and gauged her reaction before he approached her, allowing her to pet and talk to him. His ears moved back and forth as he listened to her voice. Obviously, we haven't had any guests other than maintenance since we adopted Charlie in March. We lead a quiet life.

Putting up the Christmas tree had to be supervised by both 4-legged creatures, of course. Once set up, both animals seemed comfortable, with Munchie taking up residence on the tree skirt. Charlie didn't like that, but eventually he settled in another warm cozy spot and so far, fingers crossed, peace has reigned in our household.

We look forward to buying gifts for our furry kids and taking pictures as they play with their new toys. Even though we can't believe it ourselves, we are actually considering buying a little elf costume or reindeer ears for Charlie. We don't dare try dress Munchie! Be prepared for more photos!

Last night, Munchie made the great escape from our first floor apartment, pushing out the screen in the window and slithering outside. I had an uneasy feeling when I hadn't seen him for an hour. I shook his cat food bag and called him, but he didn't answer. Shrugging on a jacket, I walked around the complex calling him. Halfway around, I heard Charlie barking frantically. I rushed home, catching a glimpse of white behind the air conditioning unit opposite our place. Charlie rushed back and forth, perched on his little set of stairs while I grabbed Munchie and frog-marched him home, muttering to myself about cat's nine lives and how he had used one by making me walk around, calling him like a fool.

Once inside, the 'brothers' greeted each other with sniffs, a quick head-boop and brush by Munchie and then the usual yaps and hisses as they chased each other around the apartment. All was right with the world. And yes, I shut the windows.

Here's hoping that all is right and good with your world this Christmas, and that you and your furry children have a wonderful holiday with lots of love, laughter, turkey and quality time spent together. Merry Christmas, from our place to yours.

Charlie has noticed that something's going on in the house. We put up the Christmas tree, which fascinated him ("A tree, for me??") and he doesn't like it when Munchie lies under it on the new tree skirt, or beside it, on Charlie's steps. At all. he considers it his territory! Munchie takes great glee in antagonizing him.

It will be interesting to see how Charlie reacts to us having company over for dinner. That will be a first for him. And we know that the smell of turkey in the air will keep him occupied sniffing for hours. Munchie will probably just hide in the bedroom again, like he always does. At least it will give Charlie a 'taste' of what Christmas is like, and all the fun associated with that holiday!

I know tastes of turkey will be a big hit, and that he will also enjoy a bit of gravy on his dry dog food, but we'll have to be careful that none of us over-indulges. Easier said than done with a feisty little black blob of a dog who can be too cute for his own good!

What he enjoys best is settling between us on the couch to be petted as we watch TV and I am sure there will be some of that going on, too this holiday season, as I hope you take time to do during your holiday. We are thankful for him and for Munchie: for all the love they give us and all the times they make us laugh and smile.

However and wherever you enjoy your Thanksgiving, be well, be happy, be loved and don't forget your furry little (or big) friends in the excitement!

Bath-Time for Charlie

It's fall, and Charlie's hair is growing back into the wavy Cocker Spaniel hair that he had when we first adopted him in spring. During the summer, it brushed out, leaving his dachsie-like short hair, which was great for keeping clean and meant that we didn't have to vacuum the floor as often. Now, not so much. So once again, it was bath-time for Charlie.

Before bath-time

Bath time with Charlie is very much like bath time with any 'child' - it's all in the preparation and timing! I start by running the water in the tub (Mr.Curious has to peek in before he runs away). Then we take off his collar (he doesn't like that - it's HIS collar...what are we doing??). And then the fun really begins.

This time Mike was awake to catch the action and we have never laughed so hard as when we tried to capture the blur that was Charlie, in action.

Step 1 - wetting and soaping Charlie

I like to use gallon jugs to wet and rinse Charlie - and if I keep the water running, it doesn't freak him when I have to replenish water in the jugs to wash the soap off. Here he is, after his first shampoo - being a 'good dog.'

Charlie doesn't really mind this step - as you can see by his face. I support his chin so I can control the flow of the water. I try keep it out of his nose and eyes. I usually repeat this step a couple of times.

Then it's his favorite time, shaking himself silly and scootching around the living room, trying to get totally dry. Anyone who has a pet KNOWS this step, intimately! It's a wonder Mike could take any photos, we were laughing so hard at this point. No, never AT Charlie, but definite with him as he played the clown. Bath-time was done for another couple of months, and Charlie could relax. Is he ever proud when everyone tells him how soft and handsome he is, his hair gleaming in the sunshine! It's almost worth the effort :)

You Can Teach A Young Dog New Tricks

Charlie and the Giant Fish that Mike bought him

Dachshunds are supposed to be notoriously stubborn and difficult to teach. Cocker Spaniels are intelligent and loving dogs. Charlie, a mix of both, is changing all the rules as he settles into domestic bliss in his home. Sure, he still pulls at the leash, but he also listens to verbal cues and definite non-verbal tugs on the leash when we have a different destination in mind. He also knows the meaning of "car-car ride" and "going to the mail box" or "let's go to the garbage," heading in the right direction without needing us to guide him. He's also learned to be a real clown.

Charlie has discovered that nothing is more fun than making us laugh. I have to admit that I often find myself chuckling and even chortling at his antics, which makes him so happy. Tongue out, he runs around the apartment, only to return and poke his nose at me to make me laugh again.

Guess who?

He's also found out that "Where's Charlie?" can be a great game to play when I am making the bed. He thinks he sneaks under the blanket without me seeing him (yeah, right) and then he wriggles around in delight, covered, until I say "Where's Charlie?" By the third repetition he can't contain himself anymore, looking more and more like a sand worm from Dune as he rears around, nose poked up, waiting for my "Peek-a-Boo!" as I uncover him. We don't get out much, ok? We need to make our own entertainment!

He's also turned into "Daddy's Little Boy" at the computer. It isn't enough to have his own chair by our computer chair - oh no! He complains until Mike takes him onto his lap while he's playing his games or fixing up his fantasy football or horse racing stats. I have often caught them with Charlie lolling on his back, tongue hanging out, while Mike absently pats his chest or stomach. He calls him "Good Luck Charlie" or "Bonus Charlie" when he hits a lucky slot play online. What characters! And me, the only girl in the house!

When we watch TV, he is often between us, soaking up attention. And forget my crocheting when he wants to flop down on his back on my lap: he just clambers on up over yarn and project, staring me right in the face until I put it down and then he throws himself backward into the crook of my elbow for me to talk to him and cuddle with him. When we go to bed, who crawls into the valley we create? Sometimes I have to wonder who's training whom, and who's learning the new tricks, anyway, but I have to admit, for love and enduring entertainment value, there's nothing like a Charlie in the house! And, between you and me, it's given Munchkin a new lease on life. I actually caught him rubbing his head against Charlie the other day. It lasted a brief moment, until Charlie started chasing him again, but still.....

Charlie's Olympics

Dreaming of fame as he waits for the Wrestling or Reverse Chase Events?

With the end of the Olympics, it's become evident that we have had some Olympic-qualifying events going on in our home and we didn't even realize it. Here, in a humorous vein, are events or accomplishments that should be included in the next Games. Please take note <ahem>:

Munchie, his greatest competitor on the course

The Reverse Chase. Charlie begins the course with a taunting and teasing of Munchie, only to have Munchie finally begin to walk away in disgust. In a surprise move, he tugs on Munchie's tail which causes our cat to suddenly reverse direction and the chase in on! It's an epic course - over couches, under coffee tables, around toy obstacles, through Munchie's tunnel and into furniture (ouch) before things calm down. Ah, but once you think it's done, it's Charlie in pursuit of Munchie, who does the smart cat thing: He climbs his cat tree and sits there eating treats, smugly looking down on Charlie! The winner of the gold has yet to be determined. [This looks like the Steeplechase event, with the obstacles changing on a daily basis]
The Toy Throw. Charlie's favorite night-time game is to bring his favorite toy and place it ON your foot. He stands there, staring until you finally look down. Let the games begin! When you slide his toy on the floor, he slides after it, trying to get it before it hits a wall or the door. He brings it back, waiting patiently for you to do it again (if you don't respond, he pokes your bare leg with his wet little nose, or gently nibbles at you until you play the game). This continues until he finds another interest, hits the food bowl or plops down to go to sleep.
The Throw & Cuddle. This is a new event in our home. Charlie has begun to throw himself backwards onto the crook of your arm when you are seated on the couch, to have his belly rubbed and have you cuddle him. If you ignore him, he stands on your lap and stares you in the face, catching you with a quick tongue if you are not quick enough to escape. Munchie finds this disgusting, and gives it a "0", but who is he to judge, when he is the master of the Insistent Nudge?
The Insistent Nudge. This is Munchie's premier coup. When he wants attention he will either stand on the computer desk and nudge you, weave through your legs and nudge (or nip you) until you give him attention, or silently steal your seat and wait for you to make the "ACK" noise as you try to avoid sitting on him. He also has been known to emit a loud "MAAA!" to get your attention and attempt to make you levitate off the bed.
Running in Circles (aka Laps). When Charlie gets excited, I would challenge any Olympiad to match him for laps! Ears waving, eyes wild, tongue hanging out of his mouth, he runs in circles at the end of his tether until we either laugh so hard we have to sit down, or until he is done and plops on the ground. Sometimes a team event with his friends Abby or Duchess. He prefers this because the leashes get tangled and he may have the opportunity to escape.
Hurdles. Charlie can leap over or onto pretty much everything in the house, except the cat tree. He is still in training. His forte: Levitation for 5 or more feet as he jumps from the foot of the bed in pursuit of Munchie (often followed by the Reverse Chase). His downfall: Crashing into Mom's legs with an oomph when he's looking behind himself instead of looking where he's going! His triumph: This doesn't stop him at all as he changes course and chases Munchie.
The Bark and Talk. While other dogs rush the window to bark, when Charlie is shushed, he is working at dialogue with his humans. He "talks" with different pitches and sounds to get his meaning across, and has been known to stealthily creep across the floor to poke his nose through a window slat before emitting a loud "BARK" that reaches approximately 2 decibels. Often followed by Hurdles as Charlie tries his own Great Escape. I wonder how he would do on that TV show??
The Sneaky Tongue. We never know how long Charlie's tongue was until we witnessed him standing on the floor, trying to sneak his tongue sideways into our dinner plate one evening. This may not be an Olympic Event, but it's worthy of any spy - a real covert affair. Maxwell Smart, eat your heart out!
The Tail Chase. This event has only occurred once or twice since we adopted Charlie, but it is worthy of any greyhound or horse racing event. When he chases his tail, his solid little dachsie body contorts to resemble a doughnut as he spins, first slowly then ever so quickly to catch that elusive tail. He caught it once...and had no idea what to do with it! I can only imagine that many dogs would enjoy competing in this event. He is currently training with Munchie by use of The Reverse Chase.
Wrestling. His favorite Olympic Event. He waits for you to catch him on the bed, and flips over to wrap his paws around your arm. Emitting sounds (much like a bear) he wrestles you for possession of your limbs. When you flip him over and press him down again, he loves nothing more than to take your hand in his mouth and suck on it. Well, maybe that's not the best idea for an Olympic event, but he sure loves it! Also takes place on the couch, the floor, the chair....

Charlie's Split Personality Problem

Lately, we've been noticing a change in Charlie's personality. He's beginning to shy away from some people, even folks he previously greeted with enthusiasm. In discussing this with other dog parents in our community, we reluctantly agree that he is growing up. He still happily greets his favorite people, especially the dog-owners he got to know and love when we first adopted him, but he won't approach strangers or people he fails to recognize. And he won't go to anyone who has anything in their hands.

Not unlike babies. who enthusiastically gurgle and goo, smiling at everyone they see when they are infants, once they reach 18 months of age or so, most "play shy," recognizing individual features and faces. I think Charlie has reached that stage of development.

When we adopted him, he was so starved for affection that he loved everyone. He rushed to greet the world with wagging tail and a big smile. Now, he realizes where home is, he recognizes us as his family, and things have changed. He's not fearful, just wary. And being part dachsie, he is also very, very stubborn. You can't FORCE him to like someone, or to go against his grain and even accept their pats. Really, you shouldn't force a pet to go against their instincts like that because they may even bite or snarl, and we don't want to start that reaction.

As our neighbor said, maybe it's a good thing in some ways. You don't want him to go to just anyone. I still have to figure out how, but I guess that there is his safety factor to consider. So I suppose the "running away to join the circus" or whatever is now out of the picture.

He and Munchie are now closer, too. At least as close as protagonist-friends can be. Charlie gets so excited when Munchie goes by, and Munchie waits for his playful attack. If Charlie makes a move and Munchie doesn't react, then Charlie will even go so far as to tug at Munchie's tail! THEN he gets his reaction and cat and dog are chasing each other around the apartment. He darts, he teases, and Munchie watches, tail swinging. Then, once the opportunity presents itself, Munchie swipes at Charlie and the chase is on! They are even sleeping in the same bed occasionally, which is a true miracle that we never thought we would see.

Charlie's also starting to vocalize a lot more. I don't mean bark, I mean "rawr rawr" with definite intonations, like he is trying to talk to us! It's really obvious, especially when we are on the computer and he is on "his" chair beside us. Maybe he wants to get onto Facebook to chat with Buster or Chewie, or maybe he just wants our undivided attention, but whatever the case, quite often it's followed by nibbly ticklish pokes to my legs or Mike's ankles. That gets him his attention! He also "talks" to Munchie a lot. Munchie has lately taken to answering with small growls and yowls of his own. The place is like a zoo sometimes: yapping and yowling, bodies flying across the floor. We wouldn't have it any other way.

I have read that Dachsie's are tenacious, stubborn, insistent canines, and I can't argue with that. But if Charlie is any indication, he's also strong, independent, loving and very affectionate. With that comes a strong protective instinct.

He's still the best "investment" we ever made, and any love we give him is returned tenfold. Once again, all I can do is urge you to visit your latest shelter and adopt a little chatty friend of your own. Life is sure never dull in our household, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Note: Our pet daddy friend, Buster's owner, laughed when I told him about the vocalizing: he said maybe Charlie would be the type to "sing" and play the keyboard. Dang, I knew there was a reason I wanted a stool for my keyboard! America's Got Talent, here we come!

Life Lessons Learned from a Little Dog

There are many things that are impossible to comprehend unless you have experienced the love and devotion of a dog. When non-dog lovers look at our furry little friends, many of them see is a lot of work or ties that keep you from doing what you want to do. A restriction on freedom.

Nothing could be further than the truth!

There is so much we can learn from our pets. We have learned these and more life lessons from our little Charlie, just by watching him and experiencing his unconditional love:

It's ok to be silly. Playing with Charlie: chasing him around the house, tussling with him with his favorite toys, playing fetch or even taking him for a walk, allows us brief moments of pure joy and silliness. And it feels great!
Sharing is caring. When Charlie places his little bone in our shoes, he is showing us how much he loves us. When Charlie brings us one of his toys, and looks up at us with bright shining eyes, he is giving us the only thing he has to share: his love.
Laughter is good for you. We have done more laughing since Charlie came into our lives that we have in years. Watching him play with Munchkin, the 2 of them chasing each other, or watching him sleep sprawled on his back (looking like a grocery store chicken) has literally brought us to tears of laughter.
Everyone is a friend (until proven differently). Look at people through your pet's eyes: everyone is a potential friend: a loving hand, a kind voice. Even when pets get more wary with age, they still wag their tail before barking. Pets don't judge because of age, appearance, culture or size. Be wary, be watchful but be kind.
Family first. Pets love their people before anyone else. They will protect you, put up with your foibles and quirks, adjust to your schedule and always be waiting for your return. That's the power of unconditional love.

We've also learned that he loves us in the morning, when our hair is sticking straight up and at night, when we are so tired that we can barely make that last evening walk with him. He doesn't care what we look like, how we dress or how little money we have. When we give him his "good boy" treat, he is thrilled with whatever he gets. We've found that we, like other dog walkers in our community, stagger out our door with coffee cup in hand every morning, wearing our sweats or pj pants. Pride goes right out the window (and it helps when your neighbor looks no better than you!).
