Acai, Gogi, Resveretrol..the new "Superfuits."

It’s not too late to get in shape for summer. Clinical nutritionist and Genesis Today Founder, Dr. Lindsey Duncan, responsible for transforming the bodies of Marc Jacobs and Demi Moore has the scoop on the latest “Superfruit” craze---and what the buzz is all about.

So what’s all the buzz about superfruits, what are they and do they really work?

Dr. Duncan: Well you are what you eat and it's all about making the right choices. A great quick way to get in shape fast is with Superfruits…they boost your system and keep it strong.

Superfruits are fruits that are packed with high amounts of antioxidants and nutrients. They were named as such because of their super powers, they are super nutritious, super potent, super efficacious. The most common are acai berry which boosts energy, hair, skin and nail growth. Goji berry elevates a happy mood, is good for the mind, memory and eye health. And resveratrol is an amazing anti ager. You can get them from supplements and juices which are the best way because they’re easy to digest and start to work quickly. Genesis Today juices are made from hand picked berries from all over the world—Brazil, Mongolia, China and they’re expensive to import and harvest but what’s great is that we do all that work for you and sell at Wal-Mart for about $7.

Drink them on the go… add yogurt and some fiber and you’ll have an instant healthy snack. Add club soda to them to make a healthier soft drink.

What are some myths about Superfruits such as acai?

Dr. Duncan: Well acai supports healthy weight control because it controls fatty acids, but its not a miracle weight loss ingredient. Some have touted it as such as it's not.

What are some other quick and easy health/exercise tips to incorporate into our daily lifestyles?

Dr. Duncan: Well its simple little things...get your sleep each night! At least 6 to 8 hours. When you wake in the morning, before you get out of bed, let gravity kick start your day. Hang your head over the side of the bed for a few moments and let the blood rush to your brain. It delivers vitamins and nutrients you need for good brain function. In the shower, alternate between hot and cold water. It stimulates the metabolism and tones the skin. And for exercise, fit walking into your day...at least 20 minutes. Be conscious of the little things you can do. Park the car a little farther in the lot so you have to walk further. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Little things over time really do work.

Go to www.genesistoday.com for more info

New Breakthrough for Contact Lens Wearers

A contact lens that offers comfort comparable to the natural eye. The Food and Drug Administration has granted clearance to market 1•Day Acuvue® TruEye™, a breakthrough in contact lens technology that also can help maintain eye health and keep eyes looking white and healthy.

Dr. Colleen Riley, VP, Professional Development and Medical Affairs, Vistakon®
1•Day Acuvue® TruEye™ was designed, developed, and clinically tested against the ultimate benchmark: the natural eye. Contact lens wearers want a lens wearing experience like wearing no lens at all. This lens offers the unique benefits of silicone hydrogel which allows breathability, hydraclear technology allows comfort and wetability and it also offers the highest UV protection of any contact lens on the market.

Dr. Susan Resnick says that many eye care doctors prescribe one-day lenses because studies have shown that daily replacement is the healthiest way to wear a contact lens.

Dr. Susan Resnick, Optometrist
As a doctor I believe that one-day disposable contact lenses are just the best way to wear contact lenses. They help my patients to eliminate alergens and irritants that can build up on the contact lenses and it helps them be more comfortable and assures me that they’re wearing the lenses in the healthiest possible way.

Cori ansher, mother of 3, says one-day contact lenses fit her lifestyle.

Cori Ansher
I’m able to change my lens every day, I feel fresh and clean. I never have to worry about cleaning them or buying solution and storing them.

1•Day Acuvue® TruEye™ will be widely available beginning this month and many eye care professionals believe that contact lens wearers will consider switching from their reusable contact lenses to this new one day lens.

Dr. Susan Resnick, Optometrist
1•Day Acuvue® TruEye™ offers all the things that a doctor and a patient want in a contact lens. They help to maintain eye health and keep the eyes looking white and healthy. They also provide consistent comfort throughout the day. I think they’re ideal for any patient who wears contact lenses.

Cori Ansher
The 1•Day Acuvue® TruEye™ fit great, it went right on very easily and felt very comfortable.

It's Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

For the third consecutive year the Skin Cancer Foundation and Aveeno are traveling across the country in a 38-ft RV to educate people about the importance of sun protection and skin cancer screenings. Dermatologist, Dr. Jeanine Downie tells us more about the Road to Healthy Skin Tour.

Dr. Jeanine Downie:

We'll be traveling around to 80 different cities across the country in hopes to screen more than 10,000 people. The free, full-body skin checks are offered by local board-certified dermatologists who are voluntering their time. Last year over 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer were diagnosed in the United States, so we're trying to raise awareness and help to prevent and eventually cure these skin cancers, especially if they're caught early. And during our tour last year we diagnosed about 1,200 suspicious moles and had 77 suspected cases of melanoma so that was very significant.

What people can do to decrease their incidences of skin cancer is to wear sun block with at least an SPF of 30. You should wear that every day, rain or shine, all year long and regardless of ethnicity. Aveeno® Positively Ageless has a new formula with Enviro-Block, a triple defense anti-oxidant with vitamin E, feverfew and soy that help to protect your skin. It also has UVA and UVB photo-stabilizing technology that blocks those rays from your skin and lasts longer than other sunblocks. And don't forget to reapply every two hours! Plus you should wear broad-rimmed hats and UVA/UVB blocking sunglasses when you're out in the sun.

You should also do at-home screenings. If you see a mole on your arm, your back or your neck that's changing or a pimple that's not healing, bring it to the attention of your local board-certified dermatologist so you can get help. It may be a skin cancer and early detection may help save your life.

For more information go to www.skincancer.org

The Facts on Hair Loss

If you’re one of the 99 million Americans that suffer from hereditary hair loss, listen up!

A new study -- Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow conducted by Wakefield Research -- shows that Americans consider hair one of their best features, second only to eyes. So you may find it surprising that when it comes to hair loss, most don’t know the facts from fiction.

Dr. Robert Leonard, chief surgeon at Leonard Hair Transplant Associates says, "Patients ask me all the time:
What is causing my hair loss? Wearing a hat? Over styling my hair? Stress?"

77% of Americans think stress causes hair loss, but doctors say that’s actually not the case.

Leonard explains, "95% of all hair loss is hereditary and can come from either side of the family, so forget that long-standing myth that it only comes from your mother’s side. Temporary hair loss can be caused by pregnancy and thyroid conditions, crash dieting and certain medications, but unlike hereditary hair loss, this is strictly temporary and hair will grow back on its own.

While most are in the dark about what causes hair loss, they are also confused when it comes to what can treat it.

Leonard tells us, "People think things like healthy diet, hair vitamins and hair thickening shampoos, conditioners and serums work. They might help improve hair health or make hair temporarily appear thicker, but they will not help stop hair loss or regrow hair."

Doctors say go with what is scientifically proven to work.

Leonard says, Rogaine is the is the only topical brand FDA approved to regrow hair. Men’s Rogaine foam with 5% Minoxidil regrows hair in 85% of men with twice daily use after 4 months. I tell my patients it’s quick and easy to apply, and then you can style your hair like you always do. Women’s Rogaine with 2% Minoxidil is also available for female patients.

Other treatments include Finasteride, sold under the brand name Propecia, which is approved for men only, low level laser light therapy and transplantation. So what else can you do?

Celebrity hair stylist, Thom Priano says, "The right hair cut can make a difference. If a woman has thinning on top, I suggest cutting a heavy bang to camouflage the area and a zig-zag part with a tousled finish to hide the scalp. For men, no comb-overs! Layered cuts work best. If your hair is straight, keep it short and cropped. It your hair is curly, go for a slightly longer cut."

Priano also says look for products that add volume. They wont regrow hair-but can help make it look thicker. Of course, the right hair style will only help if there’s hair to style! Most people lose 50% of their hair before they even realize it’s thinning.

Dr. Leonard tells us, "If you start to notice more hair than usual on your pillow, in your brush, or in the shower drain, these are the telltale signs of significant hair loss. Act early and seek treatment for thinning hair."

Winter Skin Care

Baby It's Cold Outside!

Low temperature, low humidity and harsh winds can wreak havoc on our skin.

What to do?

It's very important to follow a good skin care routine. Follow simple steps to make it the best it can be. For starters check the temp. Use luke warm water while washing your hands and taking showers. Hot water depletes the skin of moisture. Stick with a soap free cleanser. Next keep a good 24 hour hydrating moisturizer nearby and use it every single day, after every hand wash and shower. It works best while your skin is damp. And make sure it has sun protection!

In the winter your skin is still exposed on a daily basis. That kind of incidental skin exposure can add up over time and damage the skin. Year round even in the winter months, sun protection is the most important step for healthy skin. Aveeno has a daily moisturizer with SPF 15. it's oatmeal formula relieves and prevents dry skin. It also adds broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection against sun damage. You should also exfoliate on a bi-weekly or weekly basis. And don't forget your lips! Your lips have very few oil glands, so they need extra attention.

Here are a few tips:

Apply petroleum jelly to your lips and use a toothbrush to gently exfoliate them... and always use a lip balm.

Sleep with a humidifier in the room and keep your door closed to lock in the moisture.

Drink plenty of water during the day.

Before you go out, pay extra attention to your hands and face, lather extra moisturizer on before you bundle up!

Now you're ready to face winter head on.
