Mercury

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. The orbit, or path, it takes around the sun is not in a circle like Earth. The path it takes is called an ellipse, which is like a circle that has been stretched out. For this reason, the distance from Mercury to the Sun varies from about 27 million miles at its closest, to about 41 million miles at its furthest.
Mercury races around the Sun faster than any other planet. A Mercurian year (the time it takes for the planet to go once around the Sun, is only 88 days, while our year on Earth is 365 days. Mercury does not spin as fast as Earth, though, so a Mercurian day (the time it takes a planet to rotate once) is 59 Earth days!

Can I See It?
Yes you can, and you won't need a telescope, but Mercury is normally visible for a few days only three or four times a year. Because of its closeness to the Sun, Mercury is normally hidden by sunlight. When the planet is visible, you either have to get up before sunrise or be watching closely just after sunset. Mercury never gets very far above the horizon, so you will also need a place where can see clearly to either the east or west. Check the sky maps here at Astronomy for Kids. How Big Is It?
Mercury is the second smallest planet in the solar system. Pluto is the only planet that is smaller. Earth is about 7,200 miles in diameter, while tiny Mercury is less than half that size at about 3,000 miles in diameter. Put another way, if Earth was the size of a baseball, Mercury would be a little smaller than a ping-pong ball. Mercury is so small that Ganymede, one of Jupiter's moons, and Titan, one of Saturn's moons, are both larger.

How Did It Get Its Name?
Mercury is named for the Roman god of commerce and thievery. It may have gotten this name because of the way it quickly appears and disappears from our view.

What Is It Made Of?
Mercury is one of the rocky planets of the solar system, along with Earth and Venus. Mercury is made up mostly of iron, with a thin rocky layer on the planet surface.

What's It Like on The Surface?
On thje surface of Mercury, you will see that there are many craters on its surface. The planet has been hit many, many times through the years by asteroids and other objects. These impacts are responsible for all the craters on the surface. Earth probably had this many craters at one time, but our weather has worn the down over the years.
The weather on Mercury varies from extremely hot to extremely cold. If you were on the side of the planet facing towards the Sun, you would quickly melt, as the temperature would be around 700 degrees! The "daytime" temperature on Mercury varies, depending on how close it is to the Sun. At the other extreme, the temperature on the "nighttime" side of the planet (the side away from the Sun) can be over 300 degrees below zero! Mercury is not a very pleasant place.

Venus is the second planet from the Sun, located in between Mercury and Earth. The orbit, or path, Venus follows around the Sun is nearly circular, so the planet's distance from the Sun averages about 65 million miles. Being closer to the Sun, a Venusian year, the time it takes for it to complete a trip around the Sun, is just 225 days. Venus spins more slowly than Earth, though, so a day on Venus, the time it takes for the planet to turn once, is 243 days, which means that a day on Venus is longer than it's year! Even more strange is the fact that Venus rotates from East to West, which is just the opposite of Earth and most of the other planets.

Can I See It?
Yes, you can see Venus for several months each year, either in the morning or evening sky, and you don't need a telescope. Venus is called both the morning and evening star, and ancient astronomers thought it was two different objects. When it is visible, Venus is the second-brightest object in the sky, being outshone only by the Moon. You would never guess that something that is so beautiful could be so unpleasant in reality (see What's It Like on the Surface below). Since Venus is closer to the Sun than we are here on Earth, you could see the planet going through phases like our Moon does if you have a telescope.

How Big Is It?
Venus is almost the same size as Earth, with a diameter of a little over 7200 miles. This is, thankfully, the only way that Venus is similar to Earth.

How Did It Get Its Name?
Venus was named for the goddess of love and beauty. This is definitely a case of beauty being only skin deep, as Venus is a very unpleasant place, with winds that blow hundreds of miles an hour, and temperatures that are hot enough to melt most metals!

What Is It Made Of?
Venus is one of the solar system's rocky planets, along with Earth and Mercury. The planet has an iron core, which is covered by a rocky layer. This rocky layer has a lot of lava, which has been generated by the many volcanoes on its surface.

What's It Like on The Surface?
To put it mildly, Venus is an extremely unpleasant place. The bright white light that we see from Earth is a result of sunlight being reflected off the clouds that completely cover the planets surface. These clouds are made of sulfuric acid, which is an extremely dangerous substance. When you get to the planet's surface, things get even worse. The temperature on Venus averages around 900 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt lead! That's not all, the clouds on Venus have created at atmosphere that is the same as being half a mile underwater here on Earth. The air pressure would be enough to crush some submarines. Finally the winds on Venus are almost always faster than a tornado, averaging around 240 miles per hour!
The few spacecraft that have managed to land on Venus have lasted less than an hour before the heat and air pressure have melted and crushed them.
For this reason, a lot of what we know about the surface of Venus has come from spacecraft that have studied the planet from a safe distance. We have also been able to map some of the planet's surface using radar telescopes here on Earth. What we have found is that Venus has a surface that has many mountains (some higher than Mount Everest), volcanoes and plains filled with lava.

Before he was Pope Pius II, Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini was a poet, scholar, diplomat, and

publication on literature claims that Historia "was undoubtedly one of the most read stories of

Goodli History tells of the illicit love of Euralius, a high official in the retinue of the [German]
Emperor Sigismund, and Lucres, a married lady from Siena [Italy]."
It was probably written in 1444, but the earliest known printing is from Antwerp in 1488. By the
turn of the century, 37 editions had been published. Somewhere around 1553, the short book
appeared in English under the wonderfully old-school title The Goodli History of the Moste
Noble and Beautyfull Ladye Lucres of Scene in Tuskane, and of Her Louer Eurialus Verye
Pleasaunt and Delectable vnto ye Reder. Despite the obvious historical interest of this archaic
Vatican porn, it has never been translated into contemporary language. (The passages quoted
below mark the first time that any of the book has appeared in
modern English.)
The 1400s being what they were, the action is pretty tame by today's

But Euralius isn't just a horndog. He waxes philosophical about love to Lucres' cousin-in-law:

heart of flesh hasn't sometime felt the pricks of love. You know that neither the wise
Solomon nor the strong Sampson has escaped from this passion. Furthermore, the nature
of a kindled heart and a foolish love is this: The more it is allowed, the more it burns, with
nothing sooner healing this than the obtaining of the loved. There have been many, both in
our time and that of our elders, whose foolish love has been the cause of cruel death. And
many who, after sex and love vouchsafed, have stopped burning. Nothing is better when
love has crept into your bones than to give in to the burning, for those who strive against
the tempest often wreck, while those who drive with the storm escape.
Besides sex and wisdom, the story also contains a lot of humor, as when Lucres' husband
borrows a horse from Euralius: "He says to himself, 'If you leap upon my horse, I shall do the

Charikot, Dolakha, March 29 - The birth of a bizarre-looking baby in Charikot, the headquarters of Dolakha district, on Wednesday, drew a huge number of onlookers to witness the astonishing sight.

The neck-less baby with its head almost totally sunk into the upper part of the body and with extraordinarily large eyeballs literally popping out of the eye-sockets, was born to Nir Bahadur Karki and Suntali Karki at the Gaurishnkar Hospital in Charikot.
The Karki couple is a permanent resident of Dolakha's Bhirkot VDC.
The bizarre baby, however, died after half an hour of its birth, Suntali, the mother, informed. It was taken to the hospital after its death.
The news about such a baby being brought to the hospital spread like wildfire and there were hundreds gathered at the hospital to have a look. The police had to be deployed to control the crowd.
"We wouldn't have been able to save it, even if it had been brought here alive," said a nurse attending to the mother at the hospital, "This is an extremely abnormal case."

The "baby" weighed 2kg at birth and was born after the normal nine-month gestation period.
Suntali, already a mother of two normal daughters, was not suffering from any illness during the pregnancy..
Nir Bahadur, the father, says he does not feel any remorse for the newly-born baby's death. "I am happy that nothing happened to my wife," he said.

Ron Mueck is an Australian hyper-realist sculptor working in the UK. His incredible sculptures of creepy, grotesque, mottled skin and uncannily gigantic proportional figures have adorned the Millennium Dome as well as Charles Saatchi’s living room for a number of years now. It would be fair to say, Mueck’s one of the leading contemporary artists of today.

His early career was as a model maker and puppeteer for children’s television and films, notably the film “Labyrinth” staring Bowie. Mueck moved on to establish his own company in London, making photo-realistic props and animatronics for the advertising industry. This eventually led him to conclude, “photography pretty much destroys the physical presence of the original object”, and so he turned to fine art, in particular, sculpture.

In the early 1990s, still in his advertising days, Mueck was commissioned to make something highly realistic, and was wondering what material would do the trick.

Latex was the usual, but he wanted something harder, more precise. Luckily, he saw a little architectural decor on the wall of a boutique and inquired as to the nice, pink stuff’s nature. Fiberglass resin was the answer, and Mueck has made it his bronze and marble ever since.

1. The Robber who tried to rob a bank that had already closed
A bank robber was arrested in Liberty, Pennsylvania, USA, after police said he tried to rob a bank that had already closed for the afternoon. Christopher Allen Koch , 28, arrived at Citizens & Northern Bank around 11.40am and sat inside his car in the bank's parking lot for 20 minutes.
But Koch had not read the opening hours, posted on the bank's door and the bank closed at noon. He tried to enter the bank at 12.01 pm - a minute too late. He was wearing ski mask and gloves and had a gun. Employees inside spotted Koch and got a license plate number that led police to him. Koch was charged with criminal attempted robbery and possessing instruments of a crime.

Manizales, Colombia may not sound like a capital of karate, but the Pan-American
karate champion Cristian Garces happens to live there, along with her instructors and fellow karate-peeps. So when a burglar decided to invade his house in 2008 while every single one of

Again and again. The woman would not leave the door for fear the man would break in while she was calling for help. When police arrived, they found the bloody suspect passed out on the front porch with dozens of stab wounds to his lower arms and hands.The suspect, 46-Year-Old Robert Horsley , is in jail facing one count of first-degree burglary.

The man had put about 300 US dollars worth of hunting knives in his waistband and tried to leave the store, but Meijer employees confronted him and a scuffle followed, he then fell and was
stabbed by the knives he had hidden in his clothing.
The suspect was hospitalized after the attempted theft from a Meijer Inc. superstore in the US city of Grand Rapids and is expected to face a misdemeanor shoplifting charge, police say.

8. The Robber who drove a stolen car to court
A 37-year-old man was charged with stealing a Lexus SUV after he drove it to court the day a jury decided whether to convict him in an unrelated auto theft charge.
Police were suspicious after watching the San Francisco hairstylist walk to the car, parked in front of the courthouse, with keys in hand. The car also attracted attention as it had several Yorkshire Terriers mulling around it. The man was charged with receiving a stolen vehicle, receiving stolen property and charges of animal cruelty for leaving the dogs unattended in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the jury convicted the man of the original auto theft charge. He was charged with possession of a Porsche Carrera, valued at $125,000, that had been stolen from a San Anselmo home.

A burglar who pinched a bottle of expensive champagne to celebrate after stealing money and tjewellery was caught after he parked his car to sleep it off. Police were called out by worried passers-by who saw the 37-year-old man slumped behind the wheel of a car at the side of the road in Dusseldorf, Germany. Officers who woke him up checked his ID and found he was wanted for a string of robberies. A police spokesman said: "The officers couldn't believe their luck when they found out who he was. He even had the stolen goods from his latest robbery with him in the car. And we can also got him for drink driving as well."

A burglar in Hungary climbed over a fence to rob a house only to be confronted by a sword-wielding Olympic fencing ace. Virgine Ujlaky, 23, was practicing her swordplay when she saw Pal Nagy, 43, clambering in through a window of her house in a posh suburb of Budapest.
Within seconds and a few swift slashes of the sword the crook was pinned against the wall, with the blade against his throat as the swordswoman reached for the phone and called police. They arrested the villan 20 minutes later, who had to be treated by paramedics for shock. Ujlaky said: "I wasn't scared when I saw him. It was good practice as I have a competition coming up this week."
