Here’s what happens when we think about the world’s orphan crisis for too long:

We spiral. We start out with the best intentions—we’re going to learn, we’re going to do something—and somewhere around minute four, we’re sitting on the kitchen floor eating cereal straight from the box, wondering if anything we do matters at all.

Because the numbers are staggering. The need is enormous. And we’re just regular people with regular lives and regular grocery budgets, and sometimes the gap between the suffering we see and the good we can actually do feels so impossibly wide that it’s easier to just … not look.

But here’s what we know—not as a platitude, not as a bumper sticker, not as a cop-out for actually doing the hard work. This is bedrock truth, held by everyone who has sat with this crisis and kept coming back to it:

Pray with specificity.

God is not impressed by our religious-sounding generalities. “Lord, bless the orphans” is technically a prayer, but it’s also the spiritual equivalent of saying “someone should really do something about that.” God knows exactly which child is sleeping on a concrete floor tonight. He knows her name. He knows what she’s afraid of.

We should pray with particularity, with intention, with names when we have them.

We created this guide to help you pray with focus, depth, and staying power. Each day gives you a new lens—a child, a caregiver, a country, a need—and walks you through how to pray with specificity and faith.

So how do we do it? How do we pray in a way that’s real, specific and doesn’t feel like we’re just lobbing vague wishes at heaven and hoping something sticks?

Pray against the darkness.

Let’s say this clearly, because we can sometimes dance around it in polite Christian company: there are forces at work against vulnerable children that are not just systemic or political. They are spiritual.

Trafficking. Exploitation. Predators who target children without family protection. Poverty weaponized by greed. Corruption that swallows aid money while children go hungry.

Scripture is clear that our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). Which means we need to pray accordingly—with boldness. We do not pray timid, wishful prayers about these realities.

We pray the prayers of people who know who wins.

Pray for yourself, too.

This part might feel self-indulgent. It isn’t. Praying for God to shape our own hearts toward orphaned and vulnerable children is one of the most important things we can do. Because it is out of moved, softened, transformed hearts that actual action flows.

Pray to see what God sees, to feel what God feels, and for your comfortable assumptions to be disrupted. Pray for the courage to say yes when He asks you to do something terrifying and that your faith would grow big enough to match the need.

As a little girl, Leisa* moved from place to place with her father, never knowing how long she would stay.

Her mother, unable to provide for her, had no choice but to let her go. The family frequently went without food, shelter, and access to school.

Like so many children in similar circumstances, Leisa’s dreams felt out of reach.

But her story didn’t stop there—everything changed when Leisa was welcomed by our team in Haiti.

Little by little, Leisa regained what was lost: her sense of safety, security, dignity, and hope.

She found a safe and stable environment, consistent, nutritious meals, clothing, care, and above all, people who believed in her. And she pursued education with passion.

As mentors on our team invested in her life—encouraging her, discipling her, listening to her, and guiding her every step of the way—her dreams came into focus.

Today, Leisa attends university and is studying political science. She hopes to one day represent her country, a dream that once seemed unattainable.

What’s more, Leisa doesn’t aspire to succeed for herself alone.

As she grows and becomes a leader in her community, she is determined to give back.

She shares—

“I am where I am today because someone chose to invest in my life. My dream now is to do the same for others.”

Even with very limited resources, Leisa established a small solidarity fund to support orphaned and vulnerable children, mobilizing fellow university students to join her in this vision. Their goal is to offer children in need the same opportunity she was given. Currently, they organize food distributions for families in need.

But Leisa didn’t wait until she had enough to start. In faith, she started with what she had, because she knew all that God has done for her despite where she came from.

In her own words—

“When I look at my journey today, I clearly see the goodness of God in my life. There were moments when I saw no future ahead of me. But through the support I received, I was able to believe in my dreams. Today, my greatest dream is to help other children find hope.”

Leisa’s story reflects a powerful truth: when a child receives love, support, and opportunity, transformation happens … not just in the child’s life, but in the lives of those around them.

A few years ago, we introduced you to Roudelin—

a young man in Haiti who was learning to build homes while God was quietly rebuilding his life.

By the time he was 11, Roudelin had lost both of his parents, leaving him orphaned. As a boy, he leaned on the local church, where he found solace singing in the children’s choir and participating in church activities. The church became his family, and members stepped in to help, enrolling him in school.

Then, when he was a young adult, he was given the opportunity to work, learn, and eventually build a safe and secure home of his own with our team at Welcome Home Haiti.

Roudelin shares—

“After God, this opportunity has done more for me than anything else in my life.”

Over the past few years, Roudelin has continued growing—as an employee, a man, a husband, and a father.

He started by strengthening his carpentry skills—mentored by experienced builders who took the time to teach him everything from roofing to repairs.

Then, when an opportunity for advanced electrical training came his way, he was chosen to participate, based on his strong work ethic and integrity. He knew his new skills would not only serve him at work but could create new opportunities for him to provide for his family.

If you visited Roudelin’s home today, you might notice something small—but powerful. It’s constantly changing—piece by piece. That’s because every time Roudelin is paid, he invests back into his home—improving it, strengthening it, and making it a place where his family can thrive. It’s one of the ways Roudelin serves his wife, Goudline and their 3-year-old daughter.

And in a culture where fathers are often absent, Roudelin is the opposite. He takes care of his daughter’s needs kindly and gently, never afraid to be involved, change diapers, or play with her.

Roudelin’s wife, Goudline has dreams too that are now within reach.

She wants to open a small store with drinks, snacks, food staples, and hygiene items—something that could help provide steady income for their family and serve their community.

In her words—

“I want to help support our family and use my time well. I am praying we can save enough to start a small business.”

Roudelin and Goudline have learned that the hope they have found in Jesus changes everything: how they work, how they parent, and how they love each other. Together, with God’s help, they are determined to provide for their daughter the belonging, safety, and security that Roudelin never had.

In Moldova, foster parents faithfully care for children who have experienced deep loss and trauma.

Yet many do so without training in trauma-informed care. To better equip them for this important role, our team in Moldova held a training for foster families to teach them how early childhood experiences and brain development shape a child’s behavior and healing journey.

For more than 20 years, one foster mother in Moldova faithfully opened her home to children in need, loving and serving them with a heart rooted in Christ. But through the trauma-informed care training, the Lord revealed there was still more to learn.

As she listened, something shifted.

For the first time, she began to understand how early experiences shape a child’s brain, behavior, and ability to trust. She saw more clearly how trauma impacts development—and how deeply children need safe, stable families to begin healing. She shared—

“Today was a real discovery. I have been fostering children for more than 20 years … I simply didn’t know what I didn’t know.”

Her response wasn’t discouragement—it was hope.

“Now, I cannot wait to change and do better for the children in my care.”

She wasn’t alone. Other foster parents shared how meaningful it was to learn from real-life experiences. For many foster parents in Moldova, access to practical knowledge and lived experience is rare. Trainings like this provide encouragement, wisdom, and concrete strategies that help families navigate the complex needs of children who have experienced loss, neglect, or trauma.

One family was amazed at what they learned from our team. Before the training, they believed orphaned and vulnerable children were too wounded to begin to heal. But after learning about current research and trauma-informed care, their perspectives changed. They shared—

“We discovered that children really can change when they grow up in a healthy family environment. They need to experience love, respect, and consistent care. This gives us motivation to continue putting these principles into practice.”

Thanks to this training, the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Moldova are being changed:

The Girl Who Could Have Been a Different Story

Dorothy’s father died before she and her twin brother were born, leaving her mother as the sole provider for eight children in a community where stable work is scarce and school fees are out of reach.

When Dorothy was seven, her aunt brought her to Lifesong School. She received a fee-free education, two meals a day, and faithful mentorship from teachers who cared.

Dorothy graduated in 2019. Today, she works at Lifesong Farms alongside her mother, who also works for Lifesong Farms.

“Without Lifesong Farms, my mom would not have managed to take me and my siblings to school. I might have been married just so that I can have support, and I wouldn’t know Jesus.”

When Lifesong Farms employed Dorothy’s mother, the family was able to stay together. Which also enabled Dorothy to stay in school. And now Dorothy is a role model in her community for the next generation of girls.

The ripple is still moving.

He Came as an Intern and Now He’s a Leader.

Growing up in Zambia without either of his parents, Bernard enrolled at Lifesong School in 2014, not knowing what to expect. He found an education. He also found a community, a deepening faith and—for the first time—a solid place to land.

After graduating in 2020, he joined Lifesong Farms as an intern and was quickly given responsibility for packaging operations. He now leads a crew of workers and invests in their lives and growth.

“Lifesong has done a lot for my life. I became a Christian here. And I learned how to humble myself and also how to do my work.”

Bernard’s story is one example among many that sustainable business isn’t charity. It’s investment—in people, in futures, and in a country’s next generation of leaders.

Our graduates develop job skills in nursing, agriculture, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, auto-mechanics, IT, construction, and tailoring. When meaningful job skills are created, poverty cycles are broken.

In Zambia, Lifesong Farms was just the beginning. Today, a solar energy business is already up and running, and the renovated Lifesong Lodge—a guest house welcoming work teams and visitors from the public—is open for stays, with proceeds flowing back into the ministry. New ventures in construction, automotive, and vision care are underway as well.

Each business is rooted in the same idea: that a dignified job—along with knowledge of the God Who provided it—can change the trajectory of a life.

From Uganda to Ukraine: Business Fueling Mission

Every morning, someone in America drinks a cup of coffee and doesn’t think much about it.

In Uganda, that same cup tells a different story.

In a new partnership launched last year, Lifesong is equipping 400 Ugandan coffee farmers with something they’ve never had: proper processing, drying, and storage facilities. Their coffee beans are exported to the United States and sold to roasters across the country—at a fair price that actually reaches the hands that grew them.

But the coffee is just the beginning. The goal of this business fueling mission is to fund schools, preserve families, and strengthen local ministry to orphaned and vulnerable children.

Half a world away, a different crop. The same conviction.

In Ukraine, Lifesong Farms harvested over 300,000 pounds of fruit this past season—generating a record $1 million in sales, in the middle of a war. Behind those numbers are 150-plus employees, most of them orphan graduates or members of vulnerable families, showing up every day to grow something—berries, yes, but also dignity, stability, and hope.

And every dollar of net profit flows directly back into our ministry in Ukraine.

Uganda and Ukraine. Coffee and berries. Two countries, two crops, one idea: that ordinary work, done faithfully, can change the story of a generation.

Not Rescue. Transformation.

Galia’s* story is one of them.

When Galia was very young, her mother passed away. She remained in the care of her father, but circumstances in her home placed her safety and well-being at risk.

Because of these concerns, local authorities determined that she should be placed in an orphanage when she was just 5 years old.

And soon, our team in Bolivia became the stability and safety she lacked at home.

Although members of her extended family maintained occasional contact, our team in Bolivia has been by her side every step of her journey, offering Gospel-centered, holistic care and a safe place to grow. Her mentors and caregivers have helped her build a foundation for her future.

A ministry leader shares—

“Over the years, Galia has grown into a joyful, responsible, and compassionate young woman.”

Today, Galia is learning skills that will help prepare her to transition smoothly into adulthood and live independently.

She attends a technical program focused on cooking and baking, a skill she approaches with dedication and enthusiasm. During school vacations, she has even gained work experience.

She is also currently finishing her final year of secondary school and will graduate soon with her high school diploma. These opportunities allow her to build confidence and develop responsibility.

Fabiana* learned that what begins with challenge can grow into courage.

As a child, her family faced constant instability due to her father’s alcoholism. No matter how hard her mother tried to provide, her father would spend all of their money on alcohol. At just five years old, Fabiana and her siblings were placed into a children’s home.

Even then, Fabiana carried a desire for something more.

Inspired by her caregivers in the children’s home, she dreamed of becoming a social worker. She and the other girls would pretend to write up reports, copying the social workers who spent time with them.

But after graduating high school at the top of her class, she began exploring the medical field, searching for a career where she could help others and still be paid well. She went to school for nursing and received her nursing degree.

Even though she excelled as a nurse, she noticed her passion for helping people kept deepening and leading her back to social work. She began to understand the vast potential social work has to bring change and impact other orphaned and vulnerable children.

Fabiana is now in her second year of college, majoring in social work. She interns at one of the same children’s homes she grew up in and is someone the younger girls look up to. One day, she hopes to use her degree to make positive changes for orphans by helping shape government policies on a judicial level or by continuing her work as a social worker in a children’s home.

What was once Fabiana’s place of need has become a place of courage and influence.

Now, Fabiana encourages, guides, and invests in younger girls who are walking similar journeys. And she uses her gifts as a leader to bring others together, making it possible for our team to reach even more young adults.

Through it all, Fabiana recognizes God’s faithfulness in her life. He has protected her, sustains her, and continues to guide her steps as she grows into a leader among her peers.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares—
