Galia’s* story is one of them.

When Galia was very young, her mother passed away. She remained in the care of her father, but circumstances in her home placed her safety and well-being at risk.

Because of these concerns, local authorities determined that she should be placed in an orphanage when she was just 5 years old.

And soon, our team in Bolivia became the stability and safety she lacked at home.

Although members of her extended family maintained occasional contact, our team in Bolivia has been by her side every step of her journey, offering Gospel-centered, holistic care and a safe place to grow. Her mentors and caregivers have helped her build a foundation for her future.

A ministry leader shares—

She attends a technical program focused on cooking and baking, a skill she approaches with dedication and enthusiasm. During school vacations, she has even gained work experience.

She is also currently finishing her final year of secondary school and will graduate soon with her high school diploma. These opportunities allow her to build confidence and develop responsibility.

As followers of Jesus, we long to reach the least of these.

The hungry, the thirsty, the imprisoned. The Holy Spirit moves our hearts toward the vulnerable—we long to care for orphans and widows in their distress.

Yet, at the same time, the needs of the world can quickly become overwhelming. Not to mention, our own lives come with their fair share of stresses.

Most of us don’t find ourselves rich or in places of great power. Maybe you’re raising a family and the budget is tight, or you attend college while working part-time. Maybe you’re retired now and don’t have the energy you used to, or perhaps you’re wondering how your own children can begin to practice generosity.

The good news is child sponsorship is for everyone! No matter your season of life or the span of your influence, you can change the life of an orphaned and vulnerable child today. And they can change yours too!

God has blessed Lifesong with the opportunity to reach orphaned and vulnerable children in over 16 countries around the world. That’s more than 11,990 children whose lives are changed each year because people like you choose to give.

When you give just $34 per month, you help support our promise to provide every child we serve with discipleship, Gospel-centered, holistic care, quality education, and support as children transition into adulthood.

Here are 10 reasons people like you commit to sponsoring a child:

1. You make a difference.

It’s easy to underestimate the impact sponsorship can have on a child. In addition to providing for a child’s basic needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter, sponsorship provides a priceless sense of belonging. To a child longing for acceptance and hope for a brighter future, sponsorship says, “You matter!”

And beyond your sponsor child, your support impacts their community. A current sponsor explains it this way—

“When you sponsor a child, it’s about the connection, not only with the specific child you are sponsoring, but also with their caregivers and their teachers. Because through our sponsorship, we are supporting all of those people around these children and giving them resources and the encouragement they need to pour into the children they serve.”

Above: A teacher helps a student with an assignment.
Top: A sponsor child reads a letter from her sponsor.

2. One more child hears the Gospel.

Our #1 goal is for every child we serve to hear the truth about Jesus, and your sponsorship ensures that they do. When orphaned and vulnerable children understand they have a Heavenly Father who loves them, their lives transform.

3. You broaden your world view.

When you learn about a child across the globe, you and your family can gain a better understanding of another culture.

4. You are putting a face and a name to fighting poverty.

When you sponsor a child, famine, starvation, and homelessness now have a face and a name. Sponsoring a child is something tangible you can do to help.

5. You get to pray for a specific child.

Other than our staff, you may be the only person praying for your sponsor child by name. It’s so special for them to know that. In the words of one of our child sponsors—

“Not only are we praying for our sponsor child, but our sponsor child is praying for us, so the connection we are able to have is above and beyond anything we could have imagined.”

6. You invest in community.

Your sponsorship helps give a child the gift of a quality education, which is not possible for many children and young adults around the world. Each educated child has the incredible potential to lead in his or her community for decades to come. Sponsorship empowers children to become leaders who make life better for others in their communities.

7. You’ll honor God.

Scripture tells us what a blessing it is to give, and specifically, how it pleases God when we care for children who are close to His heart. God loves fatherless and vulnerable children, and we honor Him greatly when we love His kids.

8. You can initiate generational change.

By providing one child with new opportunities that may not have existed for his or her parents, you can help break the cycle of poverty in that family. And when cycles of poverty begin to break, we can prevent more children from being orphaned.

9. You can see where your money is going.

Outside of letter-writing, Lifesong sends periodic updates about the community of the child you support, so you can get a close look at what God is doing there. Not all of our locations offer the opportunity to write letters to your sponsor child. For those that do, you will have the opportunity to exchange letters twice per year.

Fabiana* learned that what begins with challenge can grow into courage.

As a child, her family faced constant instability due to her father’s alcoholism. No matter how hard her mother tried to provide, her father would spend all of their money on alcohol. At just five years old, Fabiana and her siblings were placed into a children’s home.

Even then, Fabiana carried a desire for something more.

Inspired by her caregivers in the children’s home, she dreamed of becoming a social worker. She and the other girls would pretend to write up reports, copying the social workers who spent time with them.

But after graduating high school at the top of her class, she began exploring the medical field, searching for a career where she could help others and still be paid well. She went to school for nursing and received her nursing degree.

Even though she excelled as a nurse, she noticed her passion for helping people kept deepening and leading her back to social work. She began to understand the vast potential social work has to bring change and impact other orphaned and vulnerable children.

Fabiana studies for her college social work class.

Fabiana is now in her second year of college, majoring in social work. She interns at one of the same children’s homes she grew up in and is someone the younger girls look up to. One day, she hopes to use her degree to make positive changes for orphans by helping shape government policies on a judicial level or by continuing her work as a social worker in a children’s home.

What was once Fabiana’s place of need has become a place of courage and influence.

Now, Fabiana encourages, guides, and invests in younger girls who are walking similar journeys. And she uses her gifts as a leader to bring others together, making it possible for our team to reach even more young adults.

Through it all, Fabiana recognizes God’s faithfulness in her life. He has protected her, sustains her, and continues to guide her steps as she grows into a leader among her peers.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares—

“I want others to know that they don’t have to stay in hardship but can move forward with the hope that they have in God and the church.”

—Guatemala Team

Rescue is often celebrated as the end of a nightmare.

But in truth, rescue is only the beginning for many of the young, pregnant girls who enter our program in Guatemala.

When a vulnerable young mother is pulled from abuse, the danger may be over, but the wounds remain. These wounds are carried quietly in the body, in the mind, and in the heart. Healing does not arrive in a single moment of safety. It comes slowly, deliberately, and through great care.

The orphaned and vulnerable young mothers and children our team in Guatemala serves are met with:

doctors who tend to bodies that have learned pain.

counselors who are trained in trauma and understand fear can linger long after the threat is gone.

teachers who patiently rebuild trust and curiosity.

caregivers who show up consistently, even when progress feels fragile.

ministry leaders who model faith and hope through trial.

Healing takes a team working together with intention and wisdom—

each person playing a role in restoring what was broken. And it requires patience when healing feels slow and when setbacks come without warning.

One of the young mothers we serve shares—

“Here, I am able to feel safe and focus on a better future for my daughter and me.”

But a deeper kind of healing reaches places no human effort can fully touch. For the girls we serve, beneath the counseling and medical care is healing of the heart.

This is where Jesus meets them and why your support counts.

A ministry leader puts it this way—

“We are deeply grateful for our incredible OBGYN and pediatrician who not only bring their medical expertise, but also their faith, gentleness, and hearts for Jesus into every appointment with every child. Their hands bring healing, but their love reflects the heart of our Savior.”

Jesus, the ultimate Healer, binds up the brokenhearted and gives hope where there was once despair. He restores what the enemy tries to destroy.

And in response to His immense love for us, we are blessed to give, serve, pray, and act so others can experience wholeness in Christ too.

Rescue opens the door. Partners like you walk the long road. And Jesus brings lasting healing, redemption, and hope.

Jeffrey and Morgan thought they knew how their story would unfold.

First, they would go overseas. They shared a deep love for the nations and a desire to bring the Gospel to places where the name of Jesus had barely been spoken.

Adoption was a desire of their hearts—but later. Someday down the road.

It was a good plan. A meaningful plan.

But little did they know, the story God was writing for their lives had already begun years earlier—and half a world away.

Morgan was twelve years old when she first traveled to India.

Her dad had gone on a mission trip there in 2001, and when he came home, he couldn’t shake the feeling that his family needed to see what he had seen.

So two years later, Morgan’s family went to India together.

For Morgan, the trip cracked open a world she had never imagined.

She remembers the crowded streets and the children’s homes. She remembers walking through slums and realizing that life looked very different beyond her hometown in Birmingham, Alabama.

But more than anything, she remembers what settled into her heart.

“God really started planting seeds even at a young age that I’ve been blessed to be a blessing. And I think because of all that God did on that particular trip, my heart just grew for India.”

Jeffrey’s story carried its own thread of calling.

In high school and college, God stirred something in his heart—

“Spending time overseas, I developed a brokenness for those that have never heard the Gospel, never heard the name of Jesus.”

Adoption wasn’t something he had spent much time thinking about. But then, after college, Jeffrey took a job with an adoption agency.

That’s where he met Morgan.

As their relationship deepened, they found themselves drawn together by the same important question:

What does obedience look like for our lives?

Jeffrey and Morgan married and assumed their family would grow in a familiar order—

biological children first, adoption later.

But the timing didn’t unfold the way they expected. And in that season, a verse kept returning to their minds:

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain (Psalm 127:1).

After prayer came the quiet but unmistakable direction—”Let Me build your family.”

They knew surrendering that control and timing wouldn’t be easy. But they also knew they wanted the family God had for them—not necessarily in the order they had imagined.

So they took the next step in faith and began the process of adoption.

And then, they encountered what many adoptive families experience—

The overwhelming cost. Jeffrey remembers—

“It was such a large dollar amount. In one sense, we knew God called us to this, and also, I didn’t even know how to process this dollar amount.”

When they applied for a Lifesong matching grant, it opened the door for something powerful: the chance for others to step into their adoption story.

A Lifesong matching grant doubled every donation up to a certain amount—turning generosity into momentum.

Morgan explains it this way:

“One of the amazing things about Lifesong is that they provide a platform for people to give directly to your family’s adoption process and have it be tax deductible. People know that 100% of what they give goes directly to the family.

Lifesong also provided us with a matching grant, which meant that for every dollar someone gave up to a certain amount—and it was significant, thousands of dollars—it would be matched. There is no reason an adoptive family should not partner with Lifesong.”

Friends, family, and supporters rallied around them—each gift a reminder they weren’t walking this journey alone.

Years after that first life-changing trip, Morgan returned to India.

But this time, she wasn’t there as a visiting twelve-year-old trying to understand the world.

She was there to meet her daughter.

And Jeffrey—who once imagined serving the nations in a completely different way—found himself halfway across the world, waiting to meet the little girl who would call him Dad.

It was a story God had been writing for years. The place that had first captured their hearts was becoming the place where their family was growing.

They brought Eden home and welcomed her into their family.

Then, almost two years later, they felt God leading them back again—this time to welcome another daughter, Micah.

Once again, the road to adoption came with real costs and real questions about how it would all come together. But through the generosity of others and a second Lifesong matching grant that helped make the journey possible, the path forward opened.

Soon, Micah would come home too.

And then, in the quiet unfolding of God’s will, they would welcome a biological son, Eli.

Jeffrey and Morgan’s story did not unfold as they originally imagined.

The order was different. The path was unexpected. The plans they once held so carefully had to be surrendered along the way.

But before the foundation of the world, God knew Eden, Micah, and Eli. He knew the prayers that would one day be whispered in a small apartment kitchen. He knew the trips across the ocean. And He knew the quiet moments of surrender when Jeffrey and Morgan placed their plans back into His hands.

And in God’s perfect wisdom, He began building a family. Not according to human timelines or expectations—but according to the good, good story He had been writing all along.

Season 2 is packed with honest conversations about faith in action.

Here’s what’s waiting for you this season:

Episode 1: The Power of Forgiveness and Adoption — Denis Poshelok

Episode 2 & 3: The Call to Adoption: A Journey of Faith — Matthew & Anna Bond (Part 1 & 2)

Episode 4: The Gospel Always Tells a Better Story — Trisha Priebe

Episode 5: Your Story Becomes Extraordinary — Alina Druță

Episode 6: Beauty from Brokenness — Katie & Ken Hauck

Episode 7: The Journey of Faith and Service — Andy Lehman

These conversations cover:

Faithful obedience in crisis

The long road of adoption

Generational redemption

Saying yes when the outcome isn’t guaranteed

Finding beauty in broken places

Trusting that the Gospel really does tell a better story

Start Here: Episode 1 with Denis Poshelok

If you’re wondering where to begin, start with Episode 1.

Denis Poshelok leads Lifesong Ukraine. He and his wife adopted. And when war erupted in their country, orphan ministry didn’t become theoretical—it became even more urgent.

This episode is about faithful obedience in crisis. Leading with courage in war-torn Ukraine. Forgiveness that doesn’t make headlines but changes generations. Redemption that refuses to stop at one family.

This conversation reminds us that the Gospel is not fragile.

Why This Podcast Matters

At Lifesong, we talk a lot about helping children find the love of a family and the hope of the Gospel.

But behind every statistic is a story.
Behind every “yes” is a person.
Behind every act of obedience is a wrestling.

LifeStories pulls back the curtain on those conversations.

It reminds us that God is still moving, redemption is still possible, and ordinary faithfulness still changes the world. One yes at a time.

Mapenzi’s* father was imprisoned when she was a young girl, leaving her without the protection and love she deserved.

When she became pregnant due to abuse, her family insisted she leave school, and her world began to collapse.

In Mapenzi’s words—

“After coming to Kharis House, I was the happiest I’d ever been. They received me with love and happiness, and they helped me in my education that I once thought was over.”

During her time with our team, Mapenzi received both quality education and discipleship. She became a follower of Jesus, was baptized, and is now teaching her son about God’s love. Because of her schooling, she is now able to read the Bible every day to herself and her son.

Today, she attends university where she is studying engineering. She trusts God for an abundant future, no longer defined by the tragedies of her past.

The only family Jule* can remember is our team in Zambia.

When he was just 3 years old, his parents died. And by the age of 5, he found safety, security, and belonging at New Day, a Lifesong ministry.

But as a young boy, Jule’s fear of death was a consistent visitor. Until one day, when Jule accidentally ingested some medication for rabbits, he came face-to-face with his fear. Through the compassionate care of a staff member, God used this frightful moment to reveal his need for Jesus.

And that day, Jule was saved in more ways than one.

He shares—

“God is my Heavenly Father. I don’t have an earthly father, so I feel like God is close to me, and I’m encouraged and don’t feel alone. I feel like He’s there for me.”

Today, Jule is a young adult, living in New Day’s independent living with his best friend, excited that he can now cook for himself.

“It was a moment filled with many emotions—confusion, sadness, unanswered questions—but God’s presence carried me through and kept me strong.”

War is particularly challenging for orphaned and vulnerable children, in part, because a child’s sense of safety is influenced by his or her parents. If a child’s parents are panicked or absent—whether physically or emotionally—the child will lack the stability he or she needs to thrive.

As missiles fly, bombs drop, dads leave, moms despair, school is canceled, and friends move, children without a parent to comfort them are left to make sense of it on their own.

Over the past four years, as the war continues, children in Ukraine have grown increasingly vulnerable.

Over the past four years …

Lifesong Farms Ukraine continues to employ over 150 orphan graduates, preserving dignity and breaking the orphan cycle, even now.

We’ve seen God make a way for vulnerable children and families to heal together. And we think of the Trauma Care Center and how God is redeeming brokenness for His greater good. We’re reminded that God equips followers of Jesus to adopt as more children are orphaned during the war.
Within the adoption community,

certain books get mentioned again and again—passed from one parent to another, shared in small groups, highlighted at conferences, and recommended in the moments we realize we could all use a little more wisdom for the road.

Whether you are just beginning your journey or have been walking it for years, we hope this list serves as a helpful companion—equipping you with perspective, strengthening your compassion, and reminding you that you are not alone.

Here are 10 books that shape the way we love kids from hard places—

1. The Whole-Brain Child (Siegel and Bryson)

This book is like being handed a flashlight for your child’s brain. Instead of labeling big reactions as simply misbehavior, the authors help you understand the science behind those moments and—even better—offer practical, doable ways to respond that build connection, resilience, and emotional growth.

While it is an especially valuable resource for foster and adoptive parents and anyone caring for children from hard places, its wisdom stretches far beyond that circle. Parents, grandparents, educators, ministry leaders—truly anyone raising or influence kids—will walk away feeling more equipped and far less alone. Consider this book a nightstand staple you’ll return to again and again.

2. Anatomy of the Soul (Thompson)

Dr. Curt Thompson does something pretty remarkable in this book: he bridges solid neuroscience with the practices of our faith and shows us that transformation is not just a lofty spiritual idea—it is something God actually wired our brains for. In others words, you are not stuck. Your story is not finished. Change is possible.

This books is especially meaningful for anyone doing the brave work of healing—parents, caregivers, ministry leaders, counselors. Thompson reminds us that we are shaped in community, healed in community, and fully known by a God who designed our minds with breathtaking intention.

3. The Mystery of Risk: Drugs, Alcohol, Pregnancy, and the Vulnerable Child (Chasnoff)

Chasnoff gently dismantles the assumptions many of us carry about prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol and replaces them with something far better: research, clarity, and a whole lot of perspective. Instead of fear-based narratives, he offers a thoughtful look at risk, resilience, and the remarkable capacity children have to grow and thrive when surrounded by informed, steady care.

For foster and adoptive families—especially those navigating the unknowns of a child’s early history—this book can feel like an exhale. It equips us to move past worst-case-scenario thinking and toward wise, prepared parenting. More than that, it invites us to see vulnerable children not as problems to manage but as people to understand and champion. You will walk better informed, yes, but also more hopeful, which is exactly the posture this book calls for.

The Connected Therapist: Relating Through the Senses (Smith)

This book helps decode the powerful role sensory experiences play in connection, regulation, and felt safety—which, as many foster and adoptive parents know, is often where the real work begins. Smith invites us to move beyond surface behaviors and lean into curiosity, reminding us that children communicate through their bodies long before they can explain what is happening inside.

While written with therapists in mind, don’t let that scare you off. The insights translate beautifully for parents, caregivers, and anyone loving a child from hard places. You will start to recognize cues you may have missed before and feel more equipped to respond in ways that calm rather than escalate.

The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Trauma and Adversity—A Transformative Guide to Understanding Childhood Trauma and Health (Harris)

With remarkable clarity and compassion, Dr. Harris connects the dots between early adversity and long-term health, helping us understand that childhood trauma is not just emotional—it can shape the body, the brain, and the way a child moves through the world.

And before this sounds heavy, let’s be clear: the message here is deeply hopeful. Because once we understand what children are carrying, we are far better positioned to respond with steadiness, empathy, and care.

Thriving Families: A Trauma-Informed Guidebook for the Foster and Adoptive Journey (Hook)

This book feels both grounding and deeply encouraging. It reminds us that thriving is not about getting everything right—it’s about staying curious, remaining compassionate, and showing up again and again with steady love.

Whether you are preparing to welcome a child or are already in the thick of the beautiful, demanding work of parenting, this book offers the kind of perspective that strengthens your confidence and enlarges your hope. Consider this book a guide you will return to when you need both wisdom and reassurance that the effort you are pouring into your family truly matters.

Peter’s story—from surviving life on the streets of Uganda to becoming a foster dad to children in the United States—is the kind that changes your perspective in the best possible way. It is honest without being heavy, inspiring without feeling polished, and threaded with this unmistakable truth: that being fully seen and known has the power to rewrite a life.

This book feels less like a memoir and more like a testimony to what love can do when it shows up consistently.

It Takes More Than Love: A Christian Guide to Navigating the Complexities of Cross-Cultural Adoption (Salmon)

Salmon gently but clearly reminds us that while love is essential, it is not the whole toolkit. Raising a child whose story includes another culture invites us into lifelong learning—listening well, honoring identity, expanding our awareness, and sometimes embracing the humbling work of realizing we still have more to learn.

This book feels like a wise guide for the road ahead. It calls us upward without shaming us, encouraging parents to lead with curiosity, intentionality, and deep respect for the fullness of our child’s story.
