Event Description: Join us Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11:05 p.m. on WCCO–TV Channel 4 for “Life to the Max”… bringing you stories that motivate and inspire!

- In our lead story this week, guest host Liz Collin boards a ferry destined for Mackinac Island located on Lake Huron between the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The island is a premiere tourist attraction. When you see the images captured by the “Life to the Max” camera crew, you will understand why. It is a truly unique place, offering a historic, preserved, old-world charm. Cars were outlawed on the island in 1898, so bicycles and horse drawn carriages remain the mode of transportation today. Sit back and enjoy the beauty and simplicity of this quaint island.

- Our second feature starts with a Blackhawk helicopter ride to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation. The National Guard sponsors a week-long lacrosse camp for kids from throughout the Midwest. What makes this camp so special is that it brings the sport back to where it started - its Native American roots. It also exposes kids to a healthier lifestyle by showing them there is more to life than computers and video games. The Minnesota Swarm professional lacrosse team joins in the fun to help teach this fast-growing sport to the future stars.

- Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis has grown with the city. The thriving arts community has become the signature of this famous thoroughfare. Host Mike Max visits the Hennepin Theater District for some history and a personal tour. Get the inside scoop from tour guide Christopher Yaeger with the Hennepin Theater Trust. See the State, Orpheum and Pantages Theaters – the “trifecta” of this arts and entertainment mecca.

The Mississippi River is one of the most important and historic waterways in the world, and it runs right through the middle of the Twin Cities. Did you know that the power of the flowing water at St. Anthony Falls helped build the flour mills on the banks in the 1800s? Host Mike Max visits the Mill City Museum for a local history lesson and discovers the real story behind the Minneapolis nickname. Learn about local “Empire Builder” C.C. Washburn and his role in establishing the flour mills here. Join us for a wonderful tour of this landmark and learn the history that makes Minneapolis what it is today.

In the first segment, guest host Dan Monskey travels to San Lucas, Guatemala, for a special story. Guatemala is a country rich in history and culture, but it has limited economic resources. Join Dan as he meets Minnesotan Tamara Hillstrom, who opened El Amor De Patricia (The Love of Patricia) Orphanage to offer hope and a brighter future to some of the country’s most vulnerable children. Learn more at www.theloveofpatricia.org

Bait, tackle, fishing poles, police officers and kids. “Life to the Max” finds out how all these pieces come together at the Cops-n-Kids Fishing Tournament. This isn’t just an ordinary outing to catch the big one, though. Guest host Mary Tan will show us how it’s an effort to build a better and safer community in one Minnesota city. Tune in to see how this creative partnership among the Brooklyn Park Police Department, Target Corporation, Full Throttle Outdoors and Cabela’s has started a new tradition that we hope will last a long time.

Did you know that the beaches of Sanibel are well known for their multitude of sea shells? As R.J. finds out, it’s a premier destination for “shellers” from around the world. The best shelling happens when you go out at low tide, usually 3 or 4 a.m. Tour the wildlife refuge and see the beautiful landscape and impressive animals in their serene natural habitat. “Life to the Max” is out and about in Florida. Don’t miss it!
• This week, adventure host Dan Monskey travels to Guatemala City in Central America for a story about the challenging life of the people who call this beautiful country home. City and country life meet in a place scattered with volcanoes and rich traditions and history of the Mayan people. As you peel back the layers beyond the surface culture and scenery, you begin to see lives filled with hardship and sometimes hopelessness. In the heart of this city lies what is perhaps the largest garbage dump in Central America. In a country such as ours, where affluence is common, it’s difficult to imagine generations of families surviving off the refuse of others. Dan visits the home of such a family and learns that there is pride and dignity in a job that provides self-sufficiency. Join us for this amazing story of strength, gratitude and the power of the human spirit.

•	Greg Gorman became interested in the power of pictures at an early age. It was an interest that grew stronger over the years, and photography became his passion and life’s work. He knew he was hooked when he was in the darkroom processing the images he shot the night before at a Jimi Hendrix concert. Meet the man who has photographed an impressive collection of “A-list” celebrities. Mike Max sits down for an intimate discussion with Mr. Gorman to find out what it takes to get the finished product. You may not know his name, but you will surely recognize his work. Join us for an inside look behind the camera.
•	St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a well-known, world-class, cancer research institution. What you may not know is that all the treatment is free. Hear the amazing story of how this special facility was started by actor Danny Thomas – as the response to a prayer answered. Meet the Twin Cities-based Marcio family who brought “The Elvis Experience” to the stage to help raise funds for the hospital. Most importantly, hear from children and families who have gone through the doors and received the most powerful gift – the gift of hope!
•	In our final segment this week, we visit Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. There is a competition, but not on the ice, and there’s no home team in maroon and gold, as usual. On this day, the combatants are robots, built by teams of high school students who have come together to showcase their work - impressive work indeed. Hear from team members about the long hours of planning and effort involved in building their robotic masterpieces. Learn about how the event was started, as a way to make science more fun, interesting and exciting. Join us to see the machines in action!
Event Description: Join us this Saturday, June 8, at 11:05 p.m. on WCCO–TV Channel 4 for the season 7 finale of “Life to the Max” … bringing you stories that motivate and inspire!

In the season finale, we have a special three-part story that takes place in Arlington, S.D. The year 1968 was one that this small town would never forget. The boys basketball team had a new coach and high hopes. The pride and joy of this community would not disappoint! Hear from team members about their journey to the state tournament and how they would beat the odds to take home the state crown in Sioux Falls.

The championship winning team reunited in Arlington 45 years later. Our cameras were there as they watched rare game footage – some of them for the first time. Sitting in a circle at the old Arlington Auditorium, you could feel the Cardinal spirit was back. This was a unique team. Most of them had played together since grade school, and it was those relationships and the camaraderie that was present on this night, so many years later.

This special reunion celebration concludes back where it all started, at Arlington High. The 1968 team assembles one last time to watch the Cardinals play and to take the court for a half-time tribute hosted by our own Mike Max.

Guest host Liz Collin introduces us to Tasha Schuh, who recalls the event almost 16 years ago that would forever change her life. At age 16, Tasha was performing in a theatrical production of “The Wizard of Oz.” During a scene change (and unbeknownst to Tasha), someone had removed the trap door on the stage. Tasha took a step backwards, fell more than 10 feet onto the concrete floor below and broke her neck. Doctors said she would be bound to a wheelchair and never walk again. Tune in for this amazing story of hope and hear how Tasha overcame her challenges and now travels the country sharing her story with others. She is achieving dreams beyond her wildest expectations. Learn more about Tasha and her book, “My Last Step Backwards,” at www.tashaschuh.com.

Our old friend R.J. Fritz is back on the Citrus Trail in sunny Naples, Fla. Glass blowing is a complex art form that requires patience and trial and error. R.J. visits Tropical Glass Design Studio and introduces us to owner and artist Beverly Albrets. See how the raw product takes to the fire and comes out a unique, one of a kind, original masterpiece, the beautiful result of much hard work and skill!

The town of Superior, Wisc., sits on the great Lake Superior. It’s well known as a destination for travelers on land and water. What you may not know is that Superior has the most NFL hall of fame members of any city in the country – three! Doug Sutherland is not a member of that elite group, but his accomplishments are just as noteworthy. Hear his story of athletic success that started in his hometown and took him down the Mississippi River to play for the New Orleans Saints. He would travel north again to play for the Vikings and their legendary head coach and fellow Superior native, Bud Grant. Join us to hear how he made it back home, where he belongs!

•	Guest host Liz Collin brings us a very special two-part story that is near and dear to our hearts. Working with students and making memories is what we do at Lifetouch. This segment takes us to Cretin-Derham Hall, a private, co-educational Catholic high school in St. Paul. The school is well known for its academic and athletic accomplishments. What is becoming undeniable is that the school also has one of the best theater programs in the state. Join us as we dig deep into what it takes to stage a high school musical production. Our cameras were there for auditions, set design and construction and three painstaking months of rehearsals. We followed the cast and crew from opening night of “Beauty and the Beast” right up to the final curtain call. You’ll be amazed at the skill and hard work that goes into making these memories for this talented group of young people, memories that will last a lifetime! www.cretin-derhamhall.org

•	Next, we travel to Miami University of Ohio, home of the highly acclaimed women’s synchronized skating team. On this day, the Apple Valley Icettes are in town for a national competition. These high school students have traveled across the country to compete, but they have also come to learn from the best. They are there to study one of the elite ice skating programs in the country – and to dream about what could be!

•	In our final segment, we are reminded that perfection is something many people strive for but few achieve. The ACT is a standardized test used by college admissions departments across the United States to assess academic potential in higher education. In 2011, only .04 percent of students taking the test achieved a perfect score of 36. We have the rare opportunity to meet two Forest Lake High School students who did just that. Two students with perfect scores from the same school. That’s quite an accomplishment!
Event Description: Join us this Saturday, May 11, at 11:05 p.m. on WCCO–TV Channel 4 for a new episode of “Life to the Max” … bringing you stories that motivate and inspire!

• Our first story this week is hosted by our old friend Ralph Jon (R.J.) Fritz, who joins us from sunny south Florida. R.J. introduces us to Howard Solomon, who purchased 90 acres of Florida swampland 40 years ago. Howard is a craftsman with endless talents. While clearing his land, he created a moat, where a boat/restaurant now sits. Of course, the moat surrounds Solomon’s Castle (www.solomonscastle.org). All of the buildings on this amazing piece of land were built by Howard, as well as all of the sculptures, which are made from “found” objects. Thousands flock here annually to see his incredible work, and at nearly 80 years old, Mr. Solomon has become a true south Florida icon.

• Adventure reporter Dan Monskey brings us a story about an annual climbing competition held for the past 20 years at the indoor Vertical Endeavors (www.verticalendeavors.com)climbing facility in St Paul, Minn. Here, we’ll see climbers “flash,” which means to successfully and cleanly complete a climbing route on the first attempt after having received beta or information of some form about the climb. Since the event is held in a controlled environment, and a highly competitive spirit is in the air, climbers will be pushing themselves to see how far and extreme they can go in a no-holds-barred competition. There’s a lot of exciting action. Strap up, clip in and join us to feel the excitement!

• This year, the annual conference of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA - www.fcclainc.org) was held in Orlando, Fla., and “Life to the Max” was there. FCCLA is an organization built firmly on a foundation of values, which are clearly stated in the name. Nancy Dahl, President and Chief Operating Officer of Lifetouch National School Studios is an alum and speaks with pride about her experience as a state officer 34 years ago. Join us to hear about the emotional ties and personal relationships that are forged at the conferences, and the profound impact the experiences have on these future leaders. Learn why this journey is about turning potential into talent and nurturing it every day!

This amazing program serves more than 12,000 students a year. Tune in to see how Project Success is “helping kids dream with their eyes open.”
•	A family’s love of magic is the catalyst for our second story this week. Host Mike Max introduces us to the Flom family. According to their patriarch, they chose magic as a great family activity, partially because none of them could carry a tune. We will see the family’s basement stage, where it all began, and hear about the tough side of magic and the lessons they’ve learned. Justin, the eldest son, explains that his career choice of magician has been passed down from generation to generation. He is determined to continue his magical career path, even if the final destination is unknown.
•	In our final segment this week, we travel to Mason City, Iowa. In 1962, the world premiere of “The Music Man” was held right there in River City. That’s right, Hollywood came to this small Midwest town, and it was an event they would never forget! Mason City is the hometown of Music Man creator Meredith Willson. See his boyhood home, and hear how his love of music started at an early age. Although Mr. Willson achieved great professional success prior to his big hit, he will always be remembered for this special tribute to his Midwest roots. Mason City has a museum that is a shrine to this legend. Join us for a glimpse into the life of America’s Music Man.

•	In our final segment this week, we visit Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. •	For more than 60 years it has been the most successful conference in all of college hockey. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) was established in 1951 and has produced 37 national champions. The 2013 Final 5 Championship Tournament, hosted by St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center, marked the end of an era for the WCHA. The conference will undergo major realignment for the 2013-14 season. “Life to the Max” was there for the recent tournament where they paid tribute to the past by bringing together former coaching legends for a walk down memory lane. Hear from fans and go behind the scenes for locker room footage as the teams prepare for the best college hockey tournament in the nation. The WCHA will continue – but without the Minnesota Gophers and Wisconsin Badgers, as they move to the newly formed Big 10 Conference for the 2013-14 season.
•	Brandon is a senior at Forest Lake High School. In his spare time, he volunteers as a tutor, teaching math to 4th graders at a local elementary school. He describes the students he works with as “bundles of joy” and clearly loves what he is doing. He sees his role not only as a tutor but also a mentor. If you met Brandon in junior high, you would have seen a teenager who lacked confidence. There was one particular teacher who saw something more – she saw his potential. He joined the speech team, and his world began to change. Hear from his teachers about how this amazing young man grew and how his success impacted others around him. Join us for this truly inspirational story about the power of one.
