Notes From The Field

Howdy! Sorry for the short post from the field. I’ve been on the road for the last week or so and haven’t been able to keep up with everyone. I’ll be catching back up with comments and photo friends this weekend. The good news is I’ve been testing some new gear and have been digging it, so I thought I would share some results. The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a slick little camera. I have using it exclusively to make a movie about snorkeling in Maui. Here is a quick photo from it. I posted a short clip on our Facebook page if

Wandering Is The Only Way

One afternoon I found myself wandering through the streets of a little town in France. For hours, I made my way from cafe to cafe. It was a beautiful sunny day and the people were very nice. Along the way, I photographed this.

Indulge Golden

A couple weeks back some good friends of ours opened up their second wine bar in Golden, CO. They have wine, food and ambiance dialed in. I would definitely recommend a visit. Photographer’s Note

I don’t know if you pay much attention to the gear I use to make images with. If you do, you might have noticed I am shooting more and more with the Nikon 24-70 AFS 2.8. It is a great lens, and has become a real workhorse for me. I should probably write up a full review of it. I just thought I would share this tidbit since I have about 6 months with it now.

An Evening In Temple Square

I hope you all had a great weekend…and I hope I finished my race safe and sound. This post was obviously scheduled before I left. I always want to make sure I stick to my schedule of delivering yoru adventure Monday through Friday. I do my best to add a little something interesting to your week.

Today’s Photo
There’s definitely not a lack of things to photograph in Salt Lake City’s Temple Square. You could easily spend several hours walking around and discovering new and interesting compositions. All the while being serenaded by the sweet melodies of the choir.

Fitness Challenge Finale

Howdy! Well, the fitness challenge has come to an end. I hope you were all successful in reaching your own goals. As of tomorrow morning, I will be paddling a 12’6″ board for 8 miles off of the North Shore of Maui in one of the most storied SUP (stand up paddle board) races in the world. For the last 6 months I have been training for this day. I hope that my training pays off allowing me to navigate the rolling seas and high winds miles off shore. I will be filming the race, so if everything goes well, I will be sharing it with you shortly. Wish me luck!

She'll be mounted on the front of my board for the entire 8 miles.

Pep Talks

I prepped all my gear the night before and set my alarm for what I could consider an inhumane hour. I’m not an early riser. No way was I going to miss a beautiful California coast sunrise. The alarm went off, I gave myself a pep talk, grabbed some coffee and headed out into the darkness. To my chagrin, I walked into a think bank of fog. I could have easily turned around and gone back to bed. After another pep talk, I decided to see what I could find. The lesson here…always have several pep talks ready for those moments when your ‘unmotivated self’ tries to commandeer your creativity.

Locked Up Abroad

It was last year that I hosted my first international photo walk in Cozumel, MX. It was great fun getting to know some of the local artists. This was one of the images I shot as we strolled through the streets speaking about creativity in Spanish…well, as best I could. One thing I mentioned on the walk was to pay attention to details. I have a bad habit of ignoring the micro compositions. I have to force myself to focus on the little things that will help to tell the story. This was a tough lesson for me share in Spanish…good thing my fellow photo walkers spoke English.

Super Moon

Thankfully the clouds broke and we were able to see what we were after. Generally, the moon is my photographic nemesis. To win the battle you just need to remember, it is really bright! I have found the best way to photograph it (without having to blend exposures) is to use the follow recipe.

Set your camera to manual and shoot some test exposures. You want detail in the moon…otherwise it’s going to look like the sun.
Use a long lens. Unless the moon is huge (even larger than super moon huge…which will never happen) you want the moon to be front and center. A small moon dangling in the distance of my landscape isn’t what I am after. I came to shoot the moon, so I’m going to focus on it. I shot this with a Nikon 70-300 VR on a Nikon D7000. With the crop factor I was shooting a 400mm lens, handheld…simple, manageable set up.
Find a foreground to add some perspective. This is key! Also, if you find something cool to put in front of the moon, you don’t have to wait for the super moon. Just zoom in on any old moon, with a cool foreground element, and you will have a cool perspective to share with you friends.

Pre-Game Show

I hope everyone had a great weekend and had a chance to get out to witness the Super Moon! It was cloudy in Colorado nearly all day. At the last minute, the clouds broke and we headed out to see what we could find. What we found was a Super Moon and 8.9oz of frozen yogurt. Now that’s my kind of Saturday night!
I’ll share the Super Moon with your tomorrow. However, while we were waiting for the Super Moon, Mother Nature put on quite a pre-game show for us. I thought it was too good to pass up.
