Support H.R. 91 Better Use of Light Bulbs Act or "BULB Act". Stop the ban on incandescent light bulbs that favors more expensive, mercury toxin-filled, health damaging fluorescent bulbs. H.R.6, that imposes the ban, has no health exemption for people who suffer clinically verified physical distress from fluorescent.

New Bill Proposed in the House to Repeal Bulb Ban!

[Note: I have links on the homepage for all the sponsoring representatives.] Congressman Joe Barton (Republican � Texas 6th) has introduced a Bill in the House to repeal the 2007 law that effectively bans incandescent bulbs in the US, starting in 2012. On his website Rep. Barton explains: "This is about more than just energy consumption, it is about personal freedom. Voters sent us a message in November that it is time for politicians and activists in Washington to stop interfering in their lives and manipulating the free market. The light bulb ban is the perfect symbol of that frustration. People don�t want congress dictating what light fixtures they can use."

BACKGROUND INFORMATION With growing concern about climate change, governments around the world are looking for ways to reduce greenhouse gases and to reduce consumption of fossil fuels. One simple solution that has gained government support is phasing out energy inefficient light bulbs and replacing them with energy efficient ones. The most popular bulbs that are commercially available and affordable are compact fluorescent lights (CFL). CFL bulbs use approximately 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs and last longer. At first glance this seems like a good way to conserve energy and to protect our environment. However, there are a number of serious problems associated with CFL bulbs that need to be considered and corrected. These include mercury content, emission of UV radiation, emission of radio frequency radiation, and generation of dirty electricity. There is the additional concern that these lights are making some people ill. This includes those who suffer from migraines, skin problems, epilepsy, and electrical sensitivity (1,2,3,4).

No More 100-Watt Regular Incandescent Light Bulbs in California Starting This Year, 2011

California started early adoption of Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 by phasing out 100-watt incandescent light bulbs starting this year, 2011. It is estimated that this will avoid the sale of 10.5 million 100-watt incandescent light bulbs in 2011, which would help California consumers save $35.6 million in electricity bills (according to California Energy Commission (CEC)). The standard does not affect the existing supply of incandescent light bulbs stocked in retail stores or incandescent light bulbs already in use.

Fox�s "Light Bulb Ban" Does Not Exist

[Note: I am including this in the feed because we need to be aware of all opinions.] Since the Energy Independence and Security Act was passed in 2007, right-wing media have claimed that it will outlaw incandescent light bulbs. In fact, the bill, signed by President Bush, only sets standards for light bulbs and does not ban all incandescent bulbs, only inefficient ones.
