M$ support is just two words - "M$" and "support" - aggressive and useless. So, I got a problem - I solved a problem. Reincarnation from Window$ 7 Basic to Window$ 7 Ultimate was as a pain in... whatever... More than 200 GByte of photos, and about 50 - videos. Backup taken up to 38 hours... And I am abroad, and in kind of "limited" country - to get here 1TB external hard drive with USB 3.0 is utopia.

End of story. I am in business again.

That was bit hard... It is always a trick how to understand what arts person wants. I have on-running project now to complete web-site for Eleonora Orlova. Goal is to make it as simple as possible, and purge a front not web site features, but arts of Eleonora. Project is going to end, and we have few results. Web page will be look like this:

SLT-A77 Q&A: FPS vs Buffer?

I'm considering buying a slt-A77... What is the most important thing for me is the frame per second.

What I read is that the buffer is good only for 13 frames... Is that truth?

How many pictures can in one shoot? How long can we take pictures?

Answer:

Simplifying and rephrasing a question of Sebastien a bit: will be 13 FPS working with no problem on SLT-A77? Here is not only buffering should be counted but also another factors of camera architecture, logic of in-body pre- and post-processing, type of memory cards used, and firmware loaded in body.

A bit of history...

First translucent camera I used was SLT-A55, and I've been a bit disappointed of real bug – 7 maximum shoots in raw I could do with this camera but only, after that camera became “frozen”. Same bug I was interested in SLT-A77, but...

We have a deal with software and hardware

SLT series are really fast processing bodies including build-in image post-processing. This is mostly in reason of “simplified” post-processing flow Sony uses in α cameras in respect of “EXMOR R” “BIZONE” chips they are using. So, 24.7 MP image can be “assembled” easy and this is not a problem in “in-body post-processing”. This part together with translucent technologies of SLT bodies making it really fast cam. Even more: all of pre-processing additional things like measurement, auto-focus, face-recognition, in-focus-object-tracking, etc. are not delaying at all during operations – they are just working and not slowing camera down. All of software features are very optimized with hardware.

Memory, memory, mem...

Another question is where this cam is writing to content (images and movies). SLT-A77 supports Memory Stick Pro Duo (any for pictures and Mark2 for video), Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo, and Class 4 (and higher) SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. If Memory Stick Pro just working, SD, SDHC, SDXC cards are stacked on class rating, what falls below a particular speed. Class 4 has 26x rating and 4.0 Mbps read/write spead, what is quite enough as minimal requirements for this camera. In practice, I am using Class 6 SDHC cards, what works just fine with SLT-A77. And do not ask me about read/write buffers in Sony made SD and Memory Stick readers - they are just working fine.

Always conditions

Vary valuable factor is existing what affects continuous shooting drive mode, bulb shutter speed usage and movie filming. It requires a lot of power to perform high quality movie recording or continuous shooting using the APS-C size image sensor. Therefore, if you continue to shoot, the temperature inside the camera will rise, especially that of the image sensor. In such cases, the camera is turned off automatically since higher temperatures affect the quality of the images or burden the internal mechanism of the camera. If you frequently recompose or shoot images after the power is turned on, the temperature inside the camera rises and the recording time available is shorter.

As cure of it (helping to me sometimes):

– Keep the camera out of direct sunlight.

– Turn the camera off when it is not being used.

– If possible, use a tripod and disable the SteadyShot function.

What is Sony saying?

Now we know where problems can be: speed of memory card, conditions of shooting, and environmental conditions as affecting “shooting continuation” factor. But what Sony is declaring?

May I correct a bit “input information”. Sony α SLT-A77V supports following Continuous Shooting speed (according to official source):

Continuous Advance Priority AE: Maximum 12 images/second

Continuous Shoot “Hi” (image recorded between the frames is displayed): Maximum 8 images/second

Continuous Shoot “Lo”: Maximum 3 images/second

Note: The speed of continuous shooting is slower, depending on shooting conditions (see above).

with maximum number of continuous shots:

in Continuous Advance Priority AE mode

Extra fine: 13 images

Fine: 17 images

Standard: 17 images

RAW & JPEG: 11 images

RAW: 13 images

in Continuous shooting

I have practiced with my SLT-A77V and all of above are near to same - “depending on shooting conditions”.

Summary

Here is no 13FPS supported by SLT-A77
SLT-A77 can perform 12FPS with exposure set in Continuous Advance Priority AE mode
Bufferisation is not a problem here and not related in general
pay attention to memory cards you will use with
pay attention to environmental factors

PS: Why I mentioned SLT-A55 above? Just because my problem was in incorrect settings and very hot temperature of air around. SLT-A55 is working fine in Cont.Shoot Drive Mode if follow by rules described in this cam Manual.

Yes! And this is beautiful. Pictures from Curacao are really impressive.

Caribbean are full of carnivals in February this year. What people are seeing on different islands is colourful and loud parades, all is emotional, impressive and BLACK and WHITE.

This exposition shows carnival moments from different and outstanding point of view. Impressive and emotional.

it is one of the best examples I ever seen of event photography. Most of photographers, watching this album looks like started to thing to go to Caribbean next year, but... Did you think ever, that something similar is hidden around you? Can you change angle? Can you see different way what you have seen millions times? Here is not difference is this Carnival in Curacao or party on next street of you house, or parade, or whatever. Just what you need, see it by another angle.

I've heard a lot of complains about poor photographer's life, limited ability to travel, and impossibility to access to famous hotspots and events worldwide. But... Did you ever think to change your point of view, and come with camera to you home town as stranger? Can you?

Bottom part of this story not carnival itself, but understanding and seeing world different way, showing something what others couldn't see somehow. It is one of the point to be photographer.

Amateur Photographer Magazine just release AP 2012 awards. And here you can find some of nominations shown. Word "Sony" appeared in this page 16 time what is twice more than Nikon or twice more than Canon :)

Additionally to listed nominations online, you can find in February 25, 2012 AP magazine issue nominations of "Power of Photography" (winner is Steve McCurry), "Exceptional Achievement in Photography" (winner Terry O'Neill), as well as detailed explanation why and for what from AP's point of view all of nominated awards are granted.

B&W with no PhotoShop

I mentioned about art-features in Sony SLT-A77 from manual mode in this article. One of amazing art modes to make your images touching, with warm filling about good old B&W photography (what I am really thinking about with nostalgia), and save time in non existing post-processing. Literally, you will see alive your picture in B&W before you click a shutter.

So, Eleonora Orlova, art-photographer, with long term Nikon cameras experience made creative pictures in B&W by Sony SLT-A55. B&W images with nice compositions are showing small creative photo-story here. By the way, you can compare there B&W pictures made by Nikon and post-processed with pictures made by Sony SLT-A55 in B&W art-mode.

Smart Interactive Tutorial from Sony: DSLR - Exposure

Why do we need redo what already done and done very smart way and easy way for understanding?

Most of started "professionals" just bombing by different type of tutorials what actually makes amateur photographers much more confused than understood some topics.

Why not look back to camera vendors and read and follow what they are thinking and what advising in key "how to use our product better"? Sony UK popup with nice interactive tutorials about photography basics under name "DSLR: maximising quality".

I suggest to read and "play" those tutorials not to beginners but for professionals too. Sure, this material provided by Sony - inventor of "mirrorless", but correctly saying, translucent cameras, what influenced competitors such Nikon and Canon to make bogus "something-like-this". this can be a reason of most of Nikon and Canon influenced photographers to avoid to review these articles, but... Guys, you will lose a lot :)

Different world of translucent mirror digital photo camera

Translucent Mirror

Drive tests passed very good with filling I am a bit in a future. As A55, A77 is Translucent Miorror camera what is making photography a bit different. Process to catching even quite invisible tones became much easy, with no special lenses or/and filters.

High ISO

ISO800

I still feel that higher ISO is giving more noise on image, but 24.3MP are enough to "hide" it during post processing. the lowest ISO when noise already appeared on blacks 800. Built-in noise remover is not really blurring, and damaging image much more than can be possible to remove by Image Data Converter (in case you are shutting into RAW format). But even with high ISO some images coming very sharp with no compensation of post-processing re-size.

Lo ISO

Ok. I was surprised about, but I feel comfortable when I have ISO50 and ISO80 in my camera. Image detail is much better with lower ISO, and amazing capture of light... this made me remember my old film camera and technical tricks I used when shut with ISO80 or 50. ...and for sure, no noise in image...

White Balance

Another not really good point, AWB (auto white balance). In complex (non-natural) light environment, this camera is driving very confused, and makes even much warmer colors with quite cold light existing. In this case, first in my practice, I started to use "grey cards". Not really grey, because Sony Cameras are supporting "point-to-white", so I purchased two side card (white and grey) to make pictures close to natural. Anywhere you can use any white object on a scene to set manual WB. Some basics information about white balance is here (not bad tutor by the way).

So, I got A77V body, means no lenses. I used my Sony and Sigma lenses for tests, and was impressed by feeling that camera a bit faster than lens in auto-focus. I do not have G lenses yet, but tried once tested camera in shop. Looks like, A77 made for SSMs ;) New feature like a auto-focus and exposure track of moving subject is very impressive, but not working on simple SAL lenses well because lenses could not re-focus so fast... Time to think to upgrade my lenses set.

Art effects

Sony SLT-A77V manual art modes

Instead of automatic mode art effects with Firmware v2.0 on A55, A77 is able to process art renders during shuts. What is some times saving a lot of time, especially if you hate waste a time for post-processing. Ready to go black and white, sepia, soft light, or selected colors images can be produced in one click. the problem only in my head, I have to switch my mind to specified mode to see a scene like camera can do, before switch A77 to selected mode.

Ergonomic

R1 style, good old R1. It is not only make look of A77 professional, but really intuitive and simple interface with fast access to everything. In compare with Nikon professional series, A77 gives ability to change aperture and speed on a fly, and shift both parameters increasing or decreasing aperture and shutter speed parameters together, what is making fast and easy for example background defocusing or infocusing effects to change, or decrease/increase star-effects of light sources, with no damaging of overall fixed scene exposition. (Finally) Top screen with parameters is appeared in A77, what is making easy parameters check, but really I am not "view-finder" photographer, and use it not so common.

Technical Tips for newbie light hunters

Tip 1: “Defocusing background”

About

Sharp object of image and blurred aka unfocused/defocused background – amazing photo effect to make maximum attention to subject of shooting. This type of shooting is useful for “close up” portraits and romantic compositions, or any images when necessary to pay attention exactly for subject of shutting, but not to scene in general.

Task

Make narrowed depth of field to get only object focused

What you need

Camera with ability to switch to manual mode and lens exchange.
Bright lens like with maximum aperture F1.4, F2, F2.8 (if less, harder to rich effect discussed here)
Enough scene light at all, or higher subject light cover against background (in low light conditions)

Keys

Keep aperture opened to maximum, align exposition by shutter speed to catch enough amount of light, or make higher ISO if not enough light of scene.
Keep subject of shooting as far of background as possible to keep in focus only subject, or be close enough to subject, but keep in mind composition and natural means of light and subject position.
Pay attention to lens characteristics: most of success in this method are reached with lens focal lengths about 75mm and 100mm

What to do

Install lens selected.
Switch camera to manual mode.
Set auto focus mode to spot to avoid camera to capture unnecessary background elements.
Open aperture to maximum. If you cannot reach maximum aperture supported by lens, change ISO to higher.
Adjust shutter speed to make correct exposure of scene and object.
Focus on object, adjust distance between camera and object (zoom in, if lens supported, or just make few steps closer), and, if not damaging your composition, move your object closer to camera far of background.
Shoot.

Success scene conditions

For mid and high light conditions: Background is bright enough like shiny water, bright walls, etc.
For low light conditions: Background is dark enough, but focused object is in enough light

What to understand

Lager aperture produces narrower depth of field. Lenses of longer focal lengths a much more capable of producing narrowed depth of field. So, depth of field is golden key for this method, and aperture and focal length of lenses are major “instruments” to reach this effect.

Just opinion...
Wireless connection or wired... Secured traffic is secured traffic. If you talking about security and exposed credential, it is no matter what "last mile" do you have. People, who are hunting, personal credentials, encryption certificates and so on, will do their job even with your existing VPN (pairing traffic for PKI extraction for example, especially on M$ Windows platforms).

It is just talking about egg and chicken. So, if KaspLab placed egg affront and says "this is solution" (making money BTW), why not?

low level education in IT security of regular users is just a reason to have such of product on-board of their laptops, PCs, etc. It is kinda business, is it?

Simple solution is:
1. Enable firewall on your netbook/laptop/PC, and carefully research what traffic do you use, and what is necessary to pass in and out (DO NOT TRUST wizards of any firewall software, each wizard leaves back-door for "technical" reason even KaspLab products)
2. Be aware of what you gonna explore in Internet. Even you have super cool antivirus or any security enabled controlling software, this will not warranty that you will not get trojan-style virus, or rootkit, or fake login pages or any related which may be not yet recognizable by installed antivirus on your HW.
3. Even you have simple and proved traffic protection on your PC, you are not protected. Your PC is your PC, but rest of the world is opened even you are protected incide of your PC. Strong advise of ANY more less in mind security specialists — change your password, do not be lasy, change your personal credentials frequently (once a week, once a month, once... as «once» as possible)
4. Do not use M$ products. Tobe honest, it is rare situation that commercially delivered operating system is most patched, even KspLab products just developed as extension of file system interfaces, networking interfaces (as patch alternative of own M$). Did you think ever why? So, try alternative OSs, and enjoy most virus-free and stable user environments.
5. If you have business needs to access to your banking or incorporate resources, the best solution is to use dynamic encryption of traffic access for VPN access on numbers of ports (even on HTTP, HTTPS). What is dynamic encryption? It is mostly hardware implemented pass phrase generator for access to remote secured areas via VPNs. Yes, yes, VPN ports can be blocked, ask sysadmins to add for binding additional ports that can be available anywhere.
6. Never, never and never exchange your e-mails WITH NO SSL/TLS encrypted connection!
7. Do not afraid to use open Wireless networks – no difference in general will you use WiFi, GPRS or HSDPA.

Again, this is just opinion.
