This better be good, seriously, this had better be good. A class director, a brilliant source comic and a first class screen writer in Christopher McQuarrie; mean they can’t really get this one wrong can they? This is an excellent trailer, especially with the trauma of the best part of X-Men 3; Logan having to kill Jean to, literally, save the world.

Pacific Rim trailer 2: Seriously “we ARE CANCELLING the Apocalypse!”

There may be a sprinkling of cheese on that line, but with Idris belting it out, that’s go to be a contender for line of the summer. So Giant Monsters, Giant robots. You absolutely cannot have been into much Japanese film & TV, or Manga and not be familiar with the concept. From Godzilla (Gojira) to the outstanding ‘Mobile Suit Gundam Wing’ (seriously find that show if you can; it is pure quality from drama to action, to idealism. One of my all time favourite TV shows.)

Synopsis...

That Nick Fury; he’s a tricky Son of a ... Of course anyone who knows the character from either the Marvel Universe, or the Ultimate Marvel Universe, you know that he’s a man who lies 10 times before breakfast; it’s his job after all. Also, if you were paying attention in the film you’ll recall Tony Stark telling Steve Rogers that Fury’s “secrets have secrets”; not to mention Maria Hill picking upon Fury’s manipulative use of Coulson’s Captain America Trading Cards, in strategically putting blood on them to give the heroes a reason to come together. Of course the really good news is that means Clark Gregg could well be back in the films some day, oh and that Thor & stark may have some very angry words for our Nick Fury in the not too distant future. (In Ultimate Marvel, the heroes got so sick of not being able to trust Fury they abandoned him in an alternate Universe; Way harsher than just leaving him off the Christmas list!

OK so being used to the BBC Walking With Dinosaurs, and Kenneth Branagh’s mellow tones, the voiceover in this trailer is both saccharine and cloying: but it looks spectacular and hopefully will be a worthy addition to the genuinely groundbreaking Walking With Dinosaurs stable, in the vein of ‘The Ballad of Big Al.”.

If you have ever actually met me, the chances are I sent some time trying to convince you to read this book. I’ve lost count of how many times I have read it and it actually gets better ever time. This film is an adaptation of both Ender’s Game, and the parallel tale Ender’s Shadow.

The good news is that the cast for this film, in which mankind is searching all its children to find a military genius in time to meet a returning alien invasion fleet, one that we have no hope of defeating without a 1 in a billion genius.

Cast:- Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, with Abigail Breslin and Harrison Ford.

R.I.P Ray Harryhausen; a genuine master of the film world...

There’s nothing that my unworthy mind can type here that will eve begin to pay suitable respects the genuine giant of Special effects cinema. So good was he at the Stop motion effects that cinema relied upon before the digital age. So important was he that many of the films that he worked on are remembered as Harryhausen films! Imagine that, not the directors, the actors or the writers! The guy in charge of the special effects was the selling point, and what the films are mostly remembered for. That's a huge achievement and can't be overstated.

The only other thing I can do is to urge to watch some of the films he worked on. Jason & The Argonauts may well be the best example, even with 1 or 2 dodgy performances; the original Clash of The Titans for Medusa and Pegasus. My sister and I were massive fans of The Valley of The Gwangi and three Sinbad films are all worth looking at for marvellous creativity. I still say that his Talos in Jason & The Argonauts is masterful and to this very day holds up as fantastic special effect. R.I.P Mr. Harryhausen, you gave me, and millions of others, untold hours of joy, and a little fear. You will continue to do so for decades (maybe centuries;like the mythological characters he so wonderfully helped to bring to life.) to come. (below there are some clips & trailers)

Free Comic Book Day went pretty well in my neck of the woods, Lots of kids, lots of nerds, pretty women wearing skin tight clothes (I can’t pretend that wasn't a good thing.) One thing I noticed was a lot of people missing out on the special free issue of The Steam Engines of OZ. There were so few of them to go around here, that even if you were in the queue as the shops opened, chances were they had gone before you got in. Just to be clear, I know the 2 codes go to Comixology, but there may well be other digital places to get these from; they are just who I happen to know & trust.

As well as the fun of watching my kids and our niece (hi Robyn) taking in the diversity of comics that are out there, as well s the density in ages, and the proof than most female super hero costumes will just make you look like a street walker when worn in real life (Forbidden Planet Manchester I am not referring to your two lovely, and very helpful, members of staff; AKA Black Widow & Zatana), I also got to meet a really nice guy, and his beautiful 21/2 year old daughter, whist we were waiting in line at our second comic book shop. Those of you picturing me and this guy, forcing our kids to camp out overnight, outside comic book shops needn't worry. It was two nights. OK seriously, the first shop “travelling Man” opens 1 hour earlier than forbidden Planet. (I must say that the staff at Travelling Man were awesome, really polite, really helpful and they even had a tray of sweets and doughnuts; I know, that’s so ‘Comic Book Guy’ right?) So what you had was lots of people with bags full of free comics, heading off to their second shop to try and get their hands on whichever titles they had missed out on at the first. So it came to pass that the five of us, ended up in front of this guy for the second time that morning.

We all had fun talking about various things and then he gave me the addy for a comic he thought we might like, as it had similarities to both Adventure Time and Regular Show; both of which our kids enjoy both as cartoons and as comic books. With us suitably impressed, he revealed that it is in fact a comic that he himself created and continues to work on. I have to say that Marc Jackson does resemble his lead character! So you never know what will happen when you step out of your door, and you should really mark the first Saturday in May 2014 down as Free Comic Book Day. With Iron Man 3 having just ridiculously become Marvel Studios 2^nd highest Grossing film (after The Avengers) in just 12 rolling days, it seemed fitting to mention it here. $680m breaks down as $504.8m International and an estimated $175.2 m in North America. Remember the film only came out in there this weekend, with its $175.3 the second highest grossing weekend of all time, behind only The Avengers, still impossible seeming, $207m. Well done Marvel Studios!

Around 16 years ago Marvel man Avi Arad finally convinced one of the studios that were sitting on film rights to Marvel characters to actually make a film with them. Studios were too afraid to make the films they had the rights to after Batman & Robin capped a string of box office disappointments, that Hollywood saw as a sign that people were done with Super hero films. They weren't they were just done with bad, awful, repetitive Super Hero films. Between the awful, but financially successful Batman Forever in 1995 and WB mega disaster film ‘Steel’ in 1997, Cinemagoers were ‘treated’ to 7, American, Comic book adaptations. All, except for Men In Black, were critical and/or financial horror shows. Judge Dredd, Barb Wire, The Phantom and The Crow: City of Angels, all convinced the suits that Comic book films, not just super hero films, were perhaps just too risky. WB thought about how to resurrect Batman (That was still 8 years away) and spent tens of millions of dollars failing to get a Superman film off the ground. (Most notably with Tim Burton & Nicolas Cage.)

Against this backdrop of negativity, Avi Arad was somehow able to convince New Line decided to take a chance on a little known super hero, Blade. Created in the 1970s Blade was not only a pretty grim horror film but a kick ass one to boot. The success of Blade helped tip Fox over the edge about bringing the X-Men (by far the most popular comic book character of the 1980s & 1990s) into production; and with a ‘real’ director at that; Bryan Singer from The Usual Suspects. All of this made other studios get up off their collective arses and take films that had been in development hell for years, or decades, into Production. Spider-Man definitely sealed the deal and the world hasn’t looked back since.

The two biggest success stores have undoubtedly been Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, which we should never forget started with a film that lost money at the box office. Sometimes quality, and good DVD / TV sales, is more important than money. Despite ‘only’ making $374min cinemas, the film was very well received, which led to the next two films making just over $2b combined. The other is, of course, the amazing rise of Marvel Studios and their daring, unprecedented, building of a shared Universe on the big screen. If you pickup some Marvel comics tomorrow, free or otherwise, you will likely to see characters popping up in other character’s books. It is something that happens more in Marvel comics than others, and translating that to the film business is truly remarkable. Imagine James Bond trying to escape some bad guys and getting a little help from Jason Bourne along the way, before teaming up with some Impossible Missions people to save the day. Taking the trouble to build up a brand with Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America, has paid huge dividends. Not only did the sum of those parts, with a little help from Nick Fury, end up becoming the third highest grossing film of all time (The Avengers - $1.51b); but Iron Man Three has, in a 9 day rolling release, already grossed $345m outside of North America! To put that into some kind of perspective, the top two International grosses for the Solo Avengers films were, $311m for Iron Man 2, and $268m for Thor. (Very decent amounts indeed) So in nine rolling days, Iron Man Three has already passed them both. Of course getting to the $888m The Avengers made is still a very tall order; but it is more proof that Super heroes and comic book adaptations in general, are about as popular as they have ever been.

Yeah I said it. We’re all allowed bad joke every now then. This is a once dramatic build up, with the “The...” repeat. There’s a real sense of what Logan is up against here and that he’ll have to get back to his feral, stabbing, slashing, screaming best to survive until the end ff this film; which is set sometime far ahead of the X-Men films, so he could die, but still be in other films. (Like Han Lue in the Fast & Furious films, which all seem to be set before ‘Tokyo Drift’, in which Han died.)

We cannot thank you enough Mr. Del Toro sir. The year of sci-Fi heroics firmly back on track with Iron Man Three (after the gorgeous, but disappointing Oblivion let us down) Pacific Rim may have been falling off the radar a little bit. With Man of Steel, Star Trek Into Darkness & Thor stealing the sci-fi / comic book headlines thanks to some pretty exciting trailers and teases, we needed to be reminded why Giant robots versus giant Monsters is a cool thing, especially if you are with the majority of people and didn't spend many a misspent hour watching Japanese cartoons.

Thor: The Dark World. First trailer for the return of Thor & Loki after The Avengers...

Thanks to its grounding in Mythology and the superb casting of Hemsworth & Hiddlestone, and the writing of Thor & The Avengers Loki is almost as big a draw as the return of the hero himself. Will Loki be getting any kind of penance for bring the 9 worlds to the attention of Thanos and, effectively ending the peace Odin spent centuries bringing to our corner of the Universe?

If you haven't got cinema's master of Shakespeare (Kenneth Branagh) to direct your second Thor film, what's the next best thing? Well how about somebody who has 6 episodes of Game Of Thrones under their belt? Alan Taylor is that somebody and he benefits from the impressive casting of Branagh's Thor; as with the Asgardians and 3 main humans all returning, we get an even better cast this time. Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Although Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson continues to be missed.

Two more big trailers arrived last night. Both films are relatively unusual for “blockbuster” films in modern times, in that their release dates are spread out over a couple of months, as opposed to “Day & Date” global releases or just a matter of weeks apart. Release dates for each film are below their respective trailers.

R.I.P.D...

First up we have Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon and Mary-Louise Parker star in Graphic Novel adaptation R.I.P.D – Rest In Peace Department. Directed by Robert Schwentke (Flight Plan), who successfully adapted another comic book series, RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous), the basic concept is that there is an undead police force. Nick Walker (Reynolds) joins forces with the R.I.P.D to catch the people who have just murdered him.

Synopsis...

“Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.

Veteran sheriff Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) has spent his career with the legendary police force known as R.I.P.D. tracking monstrous spirits who are cleverly disguised as ordinary people. His mission? I know this may sound very similar to that other comic book adaptation Men In Black, but after more than a century of film making and millennia of storytelling, pretty much everything sounds like something else.

The Lone Ranger

Given that Westerns tend to do far less business internationally than they do in North America, The Lone Ranger is definitely a risk. Even with the super trio of Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski & Jerry Bruckheimer (Who made 4 extremely successful Pirates of The Caribbean films), and the recent/continuing success of Tarantino’s Django Unchained ($257,220,912+ international versus $162,706,837 in North America), this $215m (cut from $250m), super hero Western is by means guaranteed to make a profit at the cinema box office, although it should make enough to make a series of films viable; and that is usually the first target these days.

From Mouse Hunt & The Ring, to The Mexican, Rango and the first three Pirates films, I’m a big, big fan of Gore Verbinski’s particular form of entertainment, soI have to say I’m looking forward to this one. He said:-

Man of Steel A 3 minute trailer for the Superman film hoping to end a 3 film losing streak...

So the 6^th big screen outing for hopes to restore the balance (so far there have been 2 successes Superman 1 & 2, and 3 varying degrees of failure, Superman 3 & 4 and Superman Returns) to at least an even success / fail rate for the character that gave the English speaking world its first, real Super hero film. Decreasing popularity, no longer being the only Super hero on film and a lack of Christopher Reeve, have not helped as WB / DC have failed to make a go of any other, mainstream, comic book hero other than Batman (Even that had the 2 Schumacher films in between Burton and Nolan).

So far the trailers have been pretty sombre and whilst fans have loved them, non fans have remained mostly underwhelmed; if for no other reason than they have been reminded of the tone of the previous Superman film. The box office for that film should remind WB that whilst Superman remains extremely well known, he is not popular enough to guarantee massive success simply because he’s ‘there’. Other characters, from Batman too Spider-Man have long since surpassed Superman in both-comic book sales and merchandising, two important barometers for how well your film may open with mostly “fan” interest alone.

I’m not sure if this new trailer is so different, but it is certainly my favourite of the three released so far. Could this be the first Superman film out of 4 that genuinely appeals to the masses? To fans and non fans alike? Well they are certainly in with a shot. Firstly Henry Cavill is a very, very good actor (If you still haven’t watched The Tudors, you should, and you’ll see how good he is.) Zack Snyder has a visual talent, there’s no denying that and with Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy) Producing and David S. Goyer (Blade trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy) writing, the film has to have S, sorry hope. Superman re-returns on the 14th of June.

I’m tempted to suggest that by now you are either going to see this film, or you’re not. But there’s always a chance to change a person’s mind and this trailer hopes to do that.

Star Trek Into Darkness MTV Movie Awards TV Spot...

Star Trek (2009) took the massive Star Trek ‘franchise’ and did what seemed impossible. Took 100s of hours of back-story, “cannon” tradition and seamlessly (however much a vocal minority moans that it isn’t) left the old films and TV shows intact, but cleared the decks for an entirely new set of stories (or new versions of existing ones) without the burden of staying true to innumerable existing plot threads.

The film will actually be out in much of the international market a week before it debuts in North America, on the 17^th. Amongst other things it takes advantage of Iron Man 3’s early roll out, giving Star Trek a 2 week buffer after Iron Man takes all the money at cinemas, and more time before the Hangover 3 arrives.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ... 1st trailer...

I stand in the minority in that I was seriously disappointed with last year’s Hunger Games film. Too soft and pretty much no character other than Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) was given any decent time to make an impression. As a result I thought the film gave us a sterile and unemotional glimpse of the story, with no real heart and no real insight into how difficult and oppressive both everyday life AND the games themselves are. These are usually funny, though rarely 100% accurate (as in the Battle Royale comment here, that just doesn't hold water) but this Honest Trailer (thanks to Met) is very close to the mark and covers much of what is wrong with this film. "Poorly directed" indeed.

I'm guessing this is one of those promotional vids that is for the “fans” much more than the general audience. But time is surely running out to get some more ads aimed at the general public, which ids who they need to go and see this film (Something that hasn't really happened for any of the last 3 Superman films.)

Elysium trailer for the new film from the writer/director of District 9 - starring Matt Damon & Jodie Foster...

With a premise reminiscent of Battle Angle Alita & Astro Boy (or even Metropolis) Elysium (a kind of afterlife / heaven in Greek Mythology) would have enough going for it talent wise with acting heavyweights Forster and Damon; but this is the next film from Neil Blonkamp, the man thrust onto the world stage by Peter Jackson after their failed attempt to turn Halo into a feature film, led to District 9, (If you haven’t seen District 9 yet, then for shame! If you have and you share my brother-in-law’s opinion that it isn't that good then double for shame.), so it is very highly anticipated indeed.

Max Da Costa (Matt Damon)

Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster)

Minister Patel (Faran Tahir)

Recently elected to lead the orbital habitat's 8,000 super-high-net-worth citizens, Patel understands how critical public opinion can be and prefers a more humane approach to keeping Elysium free of illegals. That puts him at odds with Defense Secretary Delacourt who has no issue with the ruling class getting a little blood on their hands.

Frey (Alice Braga)

The County Hospital is dirty, decrepit and crowded far beyond capacity. Nursing is what Frey always wanted to do, but working here is dispiriting and exhausting. It's also a necessity as it provides access to things she can't live without. When Max shows up in her ER, she knows she shouldn't trust him. They were so close growing up, pilfering food, dodging police bots - surviving together. But that was years ago and things are drastically different.

Iron Man 3 – New TV spot shows us The Mandarin’s army of glowey eyed, ‘Extremis’, super humans...

“My fellow Americans: my soldiers will destroy your country!” That’s not a bad line to start a trailer with, even if you’re not American. I may be jumping to conclusions about the bad guys being Extremis created super humans, but anyone who has read Warren Ellis’ Extremis storyline would make the jump, given that many elements of this film’s plot are drawn from that comic. Of course it is a very fleeting glimpse, but a glimpse it is.

Iron Man 3 is just 2.5 weeks away from its international roll out on the 25^th, and about 4 weeks from its North American debut on the 3^rd of May. Marvel Cinematic Universe fans will not only get to see the first part of Marvel Studios Ambitions “Phase 2”, but also the long awaited appearance of The Mandarin, hinted at since the first Iron Man film in 2008.

Carrie – Full trailer for the new” reimagining” of the classic horror book & film...

Look I'm as sick s the next geek / average human with words like reimagining and reboot; and the fact that more often than they should it ends up being RETREAD. Why not just say “We’re remaking the film”, or it’s a new “ adaptation of the book”, or “it is based on the book and ‘X’ film...”? You know, like John Carpenter’s The Thing is mostly a new adaptation of the story “who goes there?”, but also has a minute nod to the first adaptation of that novella, ‘The Thing From Another World.”? Or how when we go from Sean Connery to George Lazenby, or Connery to Roger Moore, it isn't a reboot (Yes I know Casino Royale was a reboot, but it is the only one and hence earns the word) it is just a straight up transition from one actor to the next. That’s what Marvel Studios plan to do with Iron Man, and Co., when the actors move on (although the ideal replacement /successor to Downey Jnr. Ironically ruled out because he is in Iron Man 3; Guy Pearce. Yes I know he’s also too old, as he’s only a few years younger than Downey Jnr. But)...

She's so scary, they got the date wrong!

Anyway that’s enough rambling and gibberish about peeves, onto the “reimagined” (sigh) Carrie. If for no other reason than the presence of the outstanding Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass 1& 2, Hugo) and the also awesome Julianne Moore, I actually have an interest in this film. Hopefully director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) can do this justice and give this generation of horror fans an experience comparable to that of those who saw the first film, back in the 1970s (and no, I am NOT that old!).

Now clearly these are not films that will easily suit every type of viewer; but if you like your films a little on the strange side, or with the kind of story you only tend to get in anime maybe you should give this a try. If not make sure you watch Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame. That film is defiantly worth your time and has more 'mass market' appeal.

The Great Gatsby: New trailer showcases music by Beyoncé, André 3000, Lana Del Rey & Florence & The Machine...

I'm sure that the music will join with the 3D, to be a hammer for the rationalist to beat this film with; but I look forward to this film more and more each month. I've never failed to be entertained by a Baz Luhrmann film and most of them (Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom) are amongst my favourites. Certain to be visually stunning, likely to have a soundtrack you’ll live your life to for a few summers, and hopefully a great film will emerge as well...

Kick-Ass 2 International (Red Band) trailer focuses more on the Hit-Girl story...

Fans of Kick-Ass will already know tat this year’s sequel is an adaptation of both the Kick –Ass 2 comic and the pretty cool Hit-Girl comic as well. In that we find the toughest girl in the land struggling to adjust to a “normal” life as just a plain old school girl. The trailer is another Red Band one (not for kids) and everything that comes out for this film just makes it seem better and better: unless you’re a Daily Mail reader of course.

After Kick-Ass' (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world's first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she's forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world's first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad.
