I have been MIA from the blogiverse lately. I have been spending as much time as possible with my wonderful hubby. He recently had to go to California for some training before he is deployed to Afghanistan. He will only be gone for about six weeks for the training but it will seem like forever. I was sitting around, thinking WAY to much, and I said to myself, "Self, what could I do to have some blogging fun, and keep my mind off the very near deployment?" And Self answered back, "GIVEAWAY!" No, I really didn't talk to myself, but give me a couple more days alone with these kids and I just might start.

DIY Canvas Board Art

Today I want to share my latest project with you. I decided to create some wall art. This was a fun project that you all should try it. I purchased two 20" x 24" canvas boards from a local yard sale for $10.00. I needed to create something to coordinate with my daughter's "shabby chic" bedroom decor. These boards were the perfect size to hang on the large, bare wall above her bed. First I found a fabulous background design from Far Far Hill. They have so many wonderful freebies! I printed my background paper out on 8.5" x 11" copy paper. I then applied an even coat of Mod Podge to back of the paper with a foam brush. Place the paper on the canvas boards while smoothing out any bubbles. A few wrinkles are fine but try to get those pesky bubbles out.

Here is what they looked like after I got the paper on. Make sure you let the glue on the bottom dry well before applying a coat of glue on top. The topcoat of glue was still wet in this photo. You can see the "overlaps" pretty good while the glue is wet but when it dries they will fade drastically.

I wanted to paint branches on these boards so I purchased some acrylic paint from the local craft store. I picked out a medium brown for the main branch color and then a color that was just a couple of shades lighter as the "highlight" color. I am in no way a painter, so I know if I can do this, you could too! I put the boards next to each other and started painting. I then added the flowers and birds with the Mod Podge in the same way I did the background.

Aren't these birds adorable!! I downloaded these free svg files from MTCSCAL E-FILES. I then scanned a section of my daughters bedding and used the image to print out some patterned scrapbook paper. I just used plain white scrapbook paper and cut it down to a printable size. I used my LYNX to cut the birds and flowers. I chalked the edges of my cuts, busted out the Mod Podge again and VIOLA! These coordinate with her bedroom perfectly and take up lots of bare wall space.

I am so glad you came by to see what I've been up to lately. I hope to be doing some paper projects soon. I know that I haven't been doing many paper projects lately, but that is only because I am trying to get my house somewhat decorated and organized. We moved into this house in August and I am just now getting around to decorating. I have lots of project to do around my house, but I will keep you all posted on what I am up to. I am sure I will be ready for another giveaway when it comes time to clean and organize my craft supplies....wink, wink.

Another Lamp Shade Makeover

Recently I have been putting a little "umph" into my existing lamp shades. I think I have finished every shade in our house...uhhh, YEP, I have. Holy Cow. You should try it. Proceed with caution! It is very addicting.

So these lamps are in my daughter's room. They are wonderfully different and are perfect in my daughter's room. I was going to do some mod podge work on them but it didn't really do it for me. I found some super cheap clothesline at the dollar store, grabbed my glue gun, and started wrapping...

and wrapping......

and wrapping!!

It is way too fun. This was my last one though. I used just under 300 yards of clothesline to cover two lampshades and lots of mini glue sticks. I attached some flowers to match the shabby theme in my daughter's room.

I almost wish I had at least one more to do. Oh well, I guess I will start on those canvas board projects. I know exactly how I want them to look, I just hope they turn out as great as they seem in my head.

Lamp Shade Makeover

Recently I have been doing some much needed decor updating in our home. We moved here in August and I still hadn't decorated. I decided it was time to make the place a little more like home. We live in a rental home so I have to decorate around the owners color choices. In the living room the walls are Tiffany Blue. I had originally wanted to paint but then decided that I would rather just decorate to incorporate the blue color. Any shade of blue would have been my last choice for the living area but I think I have made it work for now. My first DIY project was to give my boring old lamp shades a makeover. Here is a photo of the lamp before....

Pretty blah right? See that burnt yellow color on the walls. That is the kitchen and is on my list of rooms to makeover at a later date. Anyway, I had a few ideas before I actually started on the shade but a "collage" pattern seemed to be what I kept leaning toward. So, I found some fabulous vintage printables (for free, of course) over at Far Far Hill. You should pay them a visit and check out all their awesome freebies!

I printed out the files I liked on plain printer paper in the appropriate size. I then presonalized some of them using Photoshop and added our names. I began gluing them on in random patterns using Mod Podge. Here's a photo of the shade after I got a few random images on.

I started with the larger images first and then filled in the "holes" with the small images. I still have to purchase the right ribbon to trim it out with but it is now dry and sitting on an end table in our living room. And here it is all finished...

Here is a close up of a couple of the files that I personalized. Now I just need to trim it to hide the icky glue marks on the existing trim. I am thinking chocolate brown just to blend with the furniture.

This is the wall color. It would not have been my choice for a living area, but I have made it work.

Here is a small lamp we have in our hall. I covered it in the same way, but for this one I used the same image all over.

From old chair to Christmas Gift

I was going to post this right after Christmas BUT my 40 year old mind simply saved the thought for later. It seems to be doing that a lot lately. Can't wait to see what my 50 year old mind will do.

Ok, on to happier thoughts....
This was a gift for our Aunt on Christmas. My Mother and Father In-Law purchased this old chair and painted it black. They brought to me to decorate and this is what it turned out to be.

I used all acrylic paint with a clear spray finish. Wish I had a picture of the before to share with you. Since I loved doing this project I plan to do more things like this in the near future, so I will definitely get before shots for you then.

So, before I get to my card I have to come clean about my latest addiction. I am completely hooked on Pinterest!! If you haven't taken this site for a test drive yet, you should definitely give it a whirl. I have seen so many wonderful Christmas cards and decorations. I have literally spent hours just gazing at some wonderful projects, created by some amazing crafters. I created this card using many of my favorites on Pinterest as my inspiration.

I used the DCWV "Homemade Christmas" Stack for this card. I think it is my favorite Christmas stack so far. This card was super simple to make. I hand cut the strips, star, and presents from images on the paper. SOOOO super easy. I added the 'Believe' rubons around the tree. I love the way it turned out. I am thinking of keeping it for myself instead of giving it to anyone. It would look so awesome in a shadow box or frame and used as decor. Fall Halloween Blog Hop

I have recently been on a wreath making kick. I made one for halloween and now I have decided to make a fall wreath for this hop.

I bought this grapvine wreath for 40% off at Michaels as well as the berry and gold twigs for .99 cents each. I used 6 each of the twigs and wired them on securely with floral wire. I also used a little hot glue to secure them where needed.

I also found an "H" to use for .99 cents. It was white but I decided to glitz it up just a little with some gold and gold glitter acrylic paints.

Here is my "H" after I blinged it up. I then glued it the wreath with some E6000.

I found some beautiful wired ribbon for 1/2 off to use for my bow and viola....Here's my fall wreath.

My project for today is a super easy paper strip pumpkin. These pumpkins would be a fabulous craft to do with your little ones as well. For this pumpkin I used 12 paper strips (2"x12"). You can get 6 strips from 1 piece of 12x12 cardstock.

I created an svg file of some leaves and vines. I then cut them with my beast...the Lynx. I attached them to the top of the pumpkin along with a ribbon and raffia bow. To download the free leaves/vines for this pumpkin click the following link: PUMPKIN LEAVES

Halloween Trick or Treat Blog Hop Day 1

I couldn't wait to get started on my project for this hop. I have been watching some amazingly talented crafters make some fabulous holiday wreaths online, so I decided to make a halloween wreath for our front door. I wanted to do something a little different with this one. I used the materials you see here. All of these items were on sale at Micheals for 40% to 50% off. The price made this wreath even more tempting to work on! The wreath form shown is 12" in diameter. I used about 14 spools of 1" ribbon (3yds ea). The wider the ribbon, the less you have to use.

I cut the ribbon into 6" long strips and began tying them randomly around the wire wreath form.

Next, I painted the letters and glued them to the skeleton so that it looked like he was holding them.

Lastly, I made this decorative bow from this sparkly black ribbon to finish off the look of the wreath.

And here is what it looks like all finished. I love it!! I am thinking about purchasing some battery powered lights to add to it as well.

It did take some time to tie all the ribbon on, but after I finished it, I really love the look of it!! I am thinking of doing one for Christmas as well.
