<p>This little scamp is the newest addition to the family. The breed is Selkirk Rex which means he'll have curly fur ... see how his whiskers are curling too!<br />
He has made himself right at home. As for the other two? Well ... <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lilahpops/1504705130/">Cordelia</a> likes him just fine but <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lilahpops/2651851651/">Lilah</a> has been having 'issues'. But she has 'issues' if you move the furniture around so hopefully it's just her taking longer to adjust.</p><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Lilahpopscom/~4/34pzUSrGHC4" height="1" width="1"/>

<dc:date.Taken>2009-04-05T17:06:16-08:00</dc:date.Taken>

Droplet on hoya [Flickr]

<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/lilahpops/">lilahpops</a> posted a photo:</p>

I’ve been experimenting with this effect for a while now and I have to say it’s well worth trying out.

A comment from elsamuko on a previous post led me to this Lomo Script. I was chuffed to note that elsamuko updated the colours in the script based on my post.

Try it yourself

Simply follow the instructions on the GIMP Plugin Registry page and then watch your image transform before your very eyes. Have some fun with the effects you get.

You can use red, blue, green or neutral color effects and even add a vignette. If you wish, tweak the effects further by selecting the layers and adjusting them manually.

I usually try out a couple of variations before staying with one. It’s easy enough to “CTRL+Z” to undo the effect and then change the script settings to try again.

In the examples below only the color has been selected, nothing else. Look how dramatically you can change your pictures!

Green

… Funnily enough, I took a photo of a paperclip for the Entropy Challenge back in April. Initially intending to focus on the cracked parking lot, I noticed the paperclip casually hanging over the crevasse. I cropped it in iPhoto and added a slight vignette in GIMP.

Update: the new Flickr look is official as of today, 17 October 2008

Check out the Flickr blog for more details

I have to say I’m loving the new look. Everything I could possibly want is there on the homepage. Not only do I get an instant view of the recent activity on my own photostream, I see the threads from where that activity is coming from; so if a comment is from a group I posted a photo to then parts of that thread are included. And for PRO user, those stats – do you sometimes get hooked on those stats? C’mon, we all do from time to time :-) Simply click the graph to the right of “Your Photostream” to open them up.

My contacts

I love viewing my contacts’ photos and this option is still there [note: I prefer using the Flock sidebar for this]. And if I have made a comment of faved a photo I can see recent activity on their photostreams, too. In fact, the recent activity includes the “Comments You’ve Made” option – you can change this in the recent activity settings if you wish to.

My groups

One new feature I enjoy has evitalised the social aspect of Flickr. Flickr is social media after all. Each time I visit my homepage I have a preview of the latest uploads from one of my Flickr groups … and it’s a different group each time. Try refreshing your homepage to see what I mean. The visual preview shows the latest uploads to a group rather than a simple notification telling me there is an upload. I don’t even have to click to see the new photos. But I find that I am clicking the new photos – and ‘fave’-ing and commenting more than I did with the old homepage.

Get lost

Hours at a time lost. I can lose loads of time Exploring photos on Flickr. Now it’s all there on the homepage. And do you remember when you first got hooked on Flickr? That feeling comes back. As I learn more about photography my focus on its different aspects changes and hence my interest in the groups. As you learn new techniques you become obsessed fascinated with particular groups and tend to forget about others. But, seeing the thumbnails of the recent uploads of these forgotten groups has reignited my interest. Perhaps you can give back some of your knowledge, or simply fave a few and comments on others.

Yet another reason to try out the special effects in iPhoto

Again, Cordelia has agreed to model for this installment in the iPhoto series of Tips and Tutorials. In this article we’ll make a cartoon effect using iPhoto.

I have a lot of photos of my cats and like many hobby photographers they can be very hit and miss. Sometimes, though, the expression caught in an otherwise ordinary photo makes deserves some post-processing.

The photo

Here we have a photo of my British Shorthair, Cordelia.

You can see that it’s quite grainy and blurry at the same time, very low light conditions and not exactly result I was hoping for. But the look on her face made me want to try to improve the photo somehow. So I decided to do a little more experimenting with iPhoto. In no time at all I had a cartoon/comic type of effect.

It’s all about smoothing the grain

The Reduce Noise option is the key to a cartoon effect. It smooths out all the grain in the image and almost gives it a paintbrush texture.

To start with I opened the Adjust settings and moved the Reduce Noise slider all the way to the right. Play around with this as you mightn’t need to always set this to maximum. In fact, I decreased it a little (to 89.0) as the effect made the image so smooth it became even more blurry. However, even with the decrease the eyes are still out of focus and as any eager amateur photographer knows – the eye have it.

So instead of decreasing the smooth paint-like effect even further I increased the Sharpness (to .71). Instantly the eyes stood out and the cartoon effect was still in tact. There was also more of an outline around the cat.

A few more minor adjustments

To polish up the final image I made a few more adjustments.

Levels and Contrast and Crop for an overall improvement. Saturation to bump up the color. The change I was most impressed with, possibly because I don’t use it very often, was the effect an adjustment to the Highlights setting produced.

Here is the Adjustments window showing the final settings.

And the final result. Voila!

Flock has renewed my enjoyment of Flickr

The social web browser

I recently downloaded the beta version of Flock and it has quickly become my new favourite browser. It is built using Firefox technology (my other favourite browser) and comes with the tagline Flock: a social web browser. It has a large array of in-built features that make browsing the internet, checking email, uploading photos, writing blog posts all possible from the same place/application.

Get connected

Flock allows you to set up connections to your personal web network and you can activate your numerous online profiles from within the browser. There are many! Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, Gmail, Yahoo!, Digg, Wordpress (in fact I’m writing this post from Flock’s Blog Editor) and much more.

Let’s concentrate on Flickr

Setting up Flickr on Flock is easy. On launching the browser go to the Accounts and Settings tab on the Sidebar and enter your Flickr account details. Now you can see your Flickr contacts when you click on the People option in the Sidebar. It’s pretty cool as you can see who on your contact list has recently uploaded photos (and therefore potentially online) without being on the Flickr website. The sidebar also informs you of new messages in your Flickr inbox and recents comments on your photos.

Check out this 53 second video to see just how easy it is:

Upload photos from Flock

I uploaded a photo to Flickr using the Photo Uploader. Flickr isn’t the only service you can connect to. It works in a similar fashion to other uploaders. One thing that wasn’t very useful was that it only let me add the photo to one set.

Do you use Flock?

Surf the net while keeping an eye on your social networks. The Sidebar is full of features. I like the interface too, very cool and slick. Just another feature … lucky today is not a work day. Whenever will I get the time to take some photos!

Are you already a Flock user? Let us know your tips in the comments. For instance, if you know how to add an image to the blog editor I’d be forever grateful!

Whilst I would dearly love to have had all the entries here there have been delays with some and I have been keen to post those that have were submitted on time (it’s been just over a month since the end of the project date). So there are a couple more people still waiting in the wings with their entries but due to other business have not yet submitted. I hope they do, and if so, you’ll see an update.

Project recap

To answer four questions and submit some photos taken with the Voigtlander Vito BL.

1. What attracted you to the Voigtlander?

2. Do you like using the Voigtlander?

3. How does it compare to other vintage cameras you have used?

4. Do you prefer modern day digital cameras to older film and vintage models?

The idea came about as I’ve had quite a few requests for a scanned copy of the Vito BL manual and it got me thinking as to what these photographers think of its performance and operation.

Perhaps if I extended the project to include other models or to vintage cameras in general I may have had more responses. But that is something I have learned for any future project I may host.

So without further ado:

My camera belonged to my father who bought it second-hand in 1959. It’s a solid piece of equipment, totally manual and doesn’t even use batteries. He passed it on to me as my interest in photography grew – it was my first real ‘plunge’ into photography.

It’s fun to use. All the actions are manual, there are no shortcuts. You need to read the lightmeter to set the aperture, to set the shutter speed and then set the distance. Lucky for me, my father also had the rangefinder accessory which helps as it’s easy to make the wrong guess-timation without one.

For me, the most difficult action is interpreting the lightmeter although I recently discovered it doesn’t work as well as it should. I’m having better luck following the Sunny 16 rule.

Do I prefer vintage to digital? It’s a tough call and I still can’t decide. I do love my little digital point-and-shoot camera and aim to buy a DSLR in the near future. I found the Vito BL was a great introduction to learning the basics of photography and move away from automatic settings. I definitely need to improve in recording the various settings I try out as I have usually forgotten these by the time I get the film developed.

Zafer is from Turkey and here is his experience using the Vito BL:

I found the Vito BL on a local e-auction site like eBay. I am a film camera lover and although I had heard about Voigtlander cameras I had not used one. As it was cheap, I wanted to give it a try. The camera is very well built, very cute and comfortable to handle. But it lacks one major thing, a coupled rangefinder. A lightmeter can be arranged easily but not the rangefinder. If it had one, it would be my favourite camera…

I normally use two film cameras, a Leica M2 and a basic Nikon film camera FM10…

I don’t own a digital SLR as I don’t enjoy digital photography. So as my Leica is nearly 50 years old, Vito BL is not “very vintage” for me. I will keep my Vito BL in my collection but I probably won’t use it much because of the rangefinder problem. Anyway, using a Vito BL was a great experience and thank you very much for your kind help and interest

Torfinn is from Norway. Here is his response to using the Vito BL:

My grandfather bought it in 1957 when he was in the Norwegian navy and took many pictures from around the world. He gave me this camera when I told him that I was in an 2nd hand store looking for an vintage camera. So that was fun!

All the parts are in original boxes with the receipt :) My grandfather said “I cant understand why you want this old junk when you got all those new cameras that you can just push a button,” but he smiled when I told him that I liked to keep up the tradition, as he did … and when I eventually do a coast to coast roadtrip in the USA I can now use his camera. In a way history repeats itself…

I like this camera and that you don’t really know how the pictures are turning out before you get them processed … I like the vintage look and that I’m getting an experience into how they did it in the “old days” … I have used a Zenite E and a Nikon fm2 before, but I don’t need a rangefinder with those. So is a little more work with the Voigtlander…

I prefer vintage cameras over the modern ones because with digital cameras, almost all you do is press a button and you get a picture … but with vintage cameras it’s a longer process, so you care more about what you take picture of. So I use vintage cameras because it gets a warmer feeling in the pictures. But I do use a small digital camera to preserve some memories as well.

Mark says:

I borrowed one [Voigtlander Vito BL] after having disposed of a Vito B. I’m attracted to these [cameras] because of the beautiful warm colours one gets from the Color Skopar lens …

It is slightly different than other cameras of the era. The one I used had a transport problem. I gave up on the light meter. The linkage between the aperture and the shutter setting that maintains constant exposure is a real pain. The bright finder promises beautifully aligned horizontals and doesn’t deliver. The eccentric film counter is great when I remember its odd operation. This camera is very small. And heavy. I like it.

Digital camera? What’s that? One which is manipulated by one’s fingers? The Vito BL is a modern camera compared to the other ones I carry.

Mark’s hints for using the rigid front Vito B and BL:

It is scale focus (”blind focus”), so you have to set the distance to the subject. It gives one a 3-dimensional sense of the picture space, and there is a depth of field scale to help out.

If you change the shutter speed, the aperture adjusts in the opposite direction. To set it independently, press 2 tabs on the lens mount.

The shutter release doesn’t fire unless a film is advanced, turning the sprocket and cocking the shutter.

With 400 ASA film on a partially cloudy day, try 1/300 shutter speed with aperture at f11 to get very crisp negatives.

Voigtlander filters and supplementary close-up lenses are often found and are of very high quality. You can thus use the Vito BL to do interesting close-up work, infrared photography, and special effects.

A big thank you to everyone who particpated!

If you have more tips for using the Vito BL that you think may help other photographers please add them in the comments.
