What inspired you to open your shop?
Well, it’s quite a sad story, but I opened my shop shortly after I lost my first son, he was a stillborn at 36 weeks. I had quit my job because of my high risk pregnancy and found myself with too time much time on my hands and no baby to take care of. So I started crocheting to keep my hands and mind busy.

When did you open your shop?
February 2008.

What was your very first sale?
A hand felted purse.

Do you have any other jobs?
Yes, I am full time mom. *wink*

What kinds of items do you offer in your shop?
hats, wraps, bonnets, headbands...

Describe your style in three words.
Fun. Trendy. Diverse.

What is your favorite item to make today?
Love Knot Wraps

Do you accept custom orders?
Absolutely! I love them, I have received custom orders that ended up being big hits in the shop.

Are you self taught? Or did you take classes to help you get where you are?
I learned to crochet from my grandma when I was 8 years old.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
Booming!

Where do you turn to for inspiration?
For the whimsical side of my work, I usually get inspired by my kids, things they are into, their fun personalities, their colorful toys. For the new pure collection, I have been inspired by the natural, raw materials and friends like you!

What was your last (non business related) book you read?
Oh gosh... I can’t believe I am going to say this, but the last book I read was Fifty Shades of Grey. LOL

What one color describes your personality?
Hard to pick, but I will go with yellow, like the bright sun.

Have any pet peeves?
Yes, several... but one that really bugs me is when people don’t put their cart away in the grocery store.

What inspired you to open your shop?
I've been hosting my Photoshop templates I called "Tog Tools" for about 2 years on my blogsite, and honestly I was tired of having all of my products on so many pages. I wanted everything in one place.

When did you open your shop?
Literally just a week ago! But again, I've been selling products to Photographers for a couple of years now. The shop is just a new place for all of it

What was your very first sale?
In my new shop, Simple Sally, it was a handwritten initials set, which I am really really enjoying making!

What is your favorite item to make today?
The initials :)

Are you self taught? Or did you take classes to help you get where you are?
I'm self taught, yes. I read a lot online, and I always want to learn more about designing things & using Photoshop - now I've jumped into learning more about Illustrator and things.

Do you have any other jobs?
I'm a full time mommy and I'm also a lifestyle photographer for babies + children in central Illinois.

Describe your style in just three words.
Simple, clean, fun.

Within reason, I do. I'll be expanding my offerings as time as goes on.

Where do you see your business in 5 years?
As far as Simple Sally - I hope it's thriving & full of even more simple, yet fun, products that photographers and small businesses can use in their business.

1. What inspired you to become a photographer?
I have a strong need in me to be artistic, yet I can't draw or paint or sculpt. Photography always was that outlet for me. Portrait photography in particular was just something I needed to do. I want to study the human face and really find the soul that's inside. I find it so fascinated in capturing who the person really is in their image.

2. Describe your style in 3 words?
Clean, organic, simple.

3. What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with?
I currently shoot with a Canon 5DMKIII and a 50mm 1.2L lens for almost all of my work. I have the 100mm 2.8 macro for my macro images and if space is tight, then I break out my 16-35mm 2.8L. I also always have my Robin Meyers digital gray card and my Photovision Target and iPad (for white noise). When I made the transition to digital from film, I started out with the Canon 5D (original). I still have that as my backup camera and it has served me very well. The lens I started out with was the 85mm 1.8 and then moved to the 50mm 1.4.

4.At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?
December 2011 is when I announced that I'd only be accepting new newborn clients. I was drawn to newborn photography for a number of reasons. First, who doesn't want to get paid to snuggle with newborns all day?!?! Second, I found I really didn't enjoy giving direction to clients with older children so much. It's just so much easier when I just *do* the work (including the posing) for them! Third, I love the look of it - I think it's an amazing art form and I feel completely humbled and honored that families let me into their homes at such an incredibly intimate time.

5.When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?
This took awhile for sure! There was definitely a process of evolution for me. I started out with bold colors and bright, fun hats. Over time I came to realize that what I personally was most drawn to when it came to design and decor was very soft, organic, nature-inspired themes, so I started shifting my work in that direction. Just a few months ago I had a moment while editing where I felt like I finally really found myself - an 'A ha!' moment of sorts. I'm really happy about where I am now with my style though I'm certain I'll always be evolving.

6.What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...
The one-on-one workshop I took with Keri Meyers really shoved my work to the next level. That was money very well spent (plus she's just a super sweet person)!

7. Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?
I'm both! My journey into photography really began in high school and continued into college. I then didn't do much with it until after the birth of my first child, when I was motivated to pick up the camera again. From that point I learned the bulk of it on my own with the help of reading and posting on various photography forums. I've also taken several courses online and an in-person mentorship which have really helped me a great deal.

8.Do you use natural light or studio lighting?
Studio! Initially I shot all natural light but found that it was difficult to provide consistent results to my clients since every shoot was in a new location (some tiny with very little available light). Since switching, I feel my finished work has improved a great deal.

9.How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?
I really love to go walking around downtown, browsing antique shops with a mocha from Starbucks. That's kind of my perfect day.

10. What was the last book you read (not photography related)?
Let’s Pretend This Never Happened ( A Mostly True Memoir) by Jenny Lawson. She.is.hilarious!!!

11. What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?
Learn to use your camera in manual and take a business course (preferably something specific to photography).

12. Where do you look for inspiration? In person: locations, antique and thrift stores.
I browse antique shops a lot hoping something will just jump out at me but most of my inspiration comes from textures. I'm a textile junky and love fabrics so if I see a great backdrop, I build my set around that or likewise a great hat or headband, I'll build it around that.

13. Who is your photographer crush??
She's not a newborn photographer, but Meg Bitton. If I can ever afford to travel to her I'm definitely hiring her to photograph my family. Her work is beyond amazing.

14. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In my own studio space (traveling isn't the most fun thing ever with all that gear!) still shooting newborns. I also plan to be teaching newborn workshops regularly at that time. Hopefully I'll also have an office manager!

15. What's your favorite color?
Right now it's teal.

16. Have any pet peeves?
Yes. I don't like it when people talk during movies and when drivers don't pull forward into the intersection on unguarded left turns. I also really don't like being interrupted, but then, who does?

17. Your go to lens?
My 50mm 1.2L!

18. Married? Have kids? If so, tell us about them! :)
Yes, I've been married for 15 years and have 4 kids. My oldest is an almost 12 year old girl in 6th grade, following by an almost 9 year old girl in 3rd grade, and then 6 1/2 year old twin boys who are in 1st grade this year! My kids are my whole world.

19. anything else you want to share? mentor? sell anything?
Yes! I'm now taking names of those interested in online mentorship sessions with me as I plan to release those soon. I also run a little prop shop called Moon Valley Design which offers timeless hats and headbands for the newborn photographer. 1. What inspired you to become a photographer?
My brother, my Father and my daughter. My brother is an amazing photographer, my Father bought me my first camera, and my daughter changed my world in the most amazing ways I could imagine.

2. Describe your style in 3 words?
clean, modern, soft.

3. What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with?
I started out with a canon 4D, and today I carry with me a canon 5D Mark II & III, a canon 50mm L1.2, canon 85mm L1.2.

4.At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?
Quickly after deciding babies + children were all I wanted to photograph, I heard of the great Kelley Ryden and I popped in to spend a day with her. It was life changing.

5.When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?
I'm still finding me because I strive to constantly change things up as often as possible.

6.What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...
Honestly, my 50mm and my assistant, Randi. Both are tireless and both are invaluable to me.

7. Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?
Aside from taking a one day workshop, I'm completely self taught both in photography and photoshop. This may be a bit limiting, but my groove is my groove, and it works for me.

8.Do you use natural light or studio lighting?
I'm a natural light girl, and always will be.

9.How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?
The best escape for me is ironically to spend time with more kids, but this time it's my own two little ones. There's nothing more soul fulfilling for me than being with my family.

10. What was the last book you read (not photography related)?
The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time. It's an amazing story from a Autistic man, and it speaks to me because my 4 year old daughter has Autism.

11. What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?
Take risks, shoot for free to gain experience both with your camera, your subject(s) and your client skills. Look to assist established photographers you like to gain hands on experience.

12. Where do you look for inspiration? In person: locations, antique and thrift stores.
Etsy, Pinterest and Antique stores for props, and the combination usually results in a lot of dollars well spent.

13. Who is your photographer crush??
Kelley Ryden + Tracy Raver, Caroline Tran.

14. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hosting workshops in a big beautiful natural light studio (I only shoot on location now), and ensuring I know just a little more about Math than my kids. Hopefully.

15. What's your favorite color?
Green.

canon 50mm L1.2.

I'm incredibly lucky to have my gorgeous husband, Günther, and we have two amazing kids - my daughter Amstel, 4, and my son Zealand, 2.

I have been lucky to be friends with our next photographer over the last year+ ... she is quite possibly one of the sweetest people that I know! AND shes a fabulous photographer and was recently added as a Clickin Moms CMPro! I am so very happy to announce our next photographer ... Emily Lucarz :)

1. What inspired you to be a photographer?

Like most photographers out there, my first born child started my entire photography journey! After he was born, I found myself taking a million photos of him from every angle possible, in different light, outside, inside, with our dogs, with my husband etc. I finally decided I needed a better camera. My family bought me my first dslr, the d5000 for Christmas, I bought the 35mm 1.8 lens, and off I went. That's where it all started, at least:) From there, my friends had me take their kiddos photos, then their friends, and on and on! I worked hard perfecting my camera skills, decided business was becoming a full time job, so I gave up being a speech pathologist and turned it into a full time career. I haven't looked back since.

2. Describe your style in 3 words:

Clean, vibrant and fun

3. What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with?

I started out with the Nikon d5000 and 35mm 1.8 lens. Now I shoot with the D700. My three favorite lenses are the 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 and the 105mm 2.8 macro lens. My 50mm I use for newborns and my 85mm I leave on when shooting outdoors. It's my favorite lens!! The 105 I use for newborn close ups but can also be used outside sometimes too.

At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

I'm not sure I would say I 100% specialize in newborn photography. I love photographing all people, but my newborn work has gotten me the most recognition in my area, I guess you could say. When I really started getting busy, I found myself booking a ton of newborn clients that came to me for my poses as well as lifestyle shots. I love being able to incorporate both types of shots into a session, versus just having one over the other. I think families appreciate it too:) So I would say I specialize in the ability to capture newborns all curled up and squishy and cute, as well as capturing natural life moments between families. I still find that photographing lifestyle sessions in clients homes often end up being my favorite.

5.When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

I think us as photographers are always coming into our style. I think as a photographer we have a vision of what we want to capture and how we want it to look, but our ways of getting there are always evolving. It's taken me a few years of playing in photoshop, photographing in different types of light, etc, to come back to loving the natural clean feel to photos. I love bright color, clean skin tones, creative light, natural shadows, lots of white, non forced smiles, minimal posing and most of all, shooting wide open. There is something about shooting at 1.8 that really draws me in. I love clear subjects with extremely blurry backgrounds. It's taken me awhile to master the ability to focus well with my lens that open but I'm so glad I finally have!! I loooove blurry backgrounds!! :)

6.What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...

Two weeks ago I would of said my 85mm lens. However, I just had my branding done and would now say that! I had always just used templates for my site and was never totally satisfied. I never felt like I had a "look". I wanted something clean with color pop. I kept trying to be natural and pretty etc etc. I was playing it safe. But it was never my personality. I'm always super happy and have lots of endless energy.. Plus I'm obsessed with color. I now feel like I have a brand that matches my personality. I was brave and stepped out of the box with my logo, and I'm so glad I did!

7. Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

When I first got my dslr I took a small intro class to help me learn my camera which was put on by a local photographer. After that I read what I could and just practiced a lot!

8. Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

All natural light! I would love to learn studio lighting one day, but my type of photography does not do well with carting around a light :) If I ever got a studio I would consider it for later in the evening shoots. But I still love the look of natural lighting :)

9. How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

Well, thats the question of the hour. I am still trying to figure that one out. I have been blessed that business is booming, but also blessed with two little boys to take care of. During busy season my husband makes sure “life” is taken care of, and when it’s normal season, I make sure spend as much time with my family as I can. I also charge more for weekend shoots as those times are more priceless with my family. If you ask my husband, after lots of shooting, Im known to hop in the bath with a bottle of wine and watch The Young the Restless!

10. What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

Hunger Games Series!

11. What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?

Try every style of photography. Every style of editing. Talk to other photographers about ideas for pricing. What worked, what didn't work. However, price for yourself, not for what others tell you to price at. If you don’t want to sell prints because you are SO busy with your family and just want to sell digitals, do what works for YOUR family. However, don’t price yourself so cheap that you are undervaluing your gift to others. Don’t be scared of being called a mom with a camera. Almost all of us were! We all had to start somewhere. Ask for help. Know that becoming a photographer is WAY more work than you can ever imagine. It will take you away from your family more than you expect. You will spend hours and hours keeping everyone happy but make sure you are happy too. Plan for that and make ways to make sure you keep your family number one, always. Don’t overbook. :)

12. Where do you look for inspiration? In person: locations, antique and thrift stores.

I am always looking for inspiration by being a people watcher. I watch how people act in real life. How a family interacts. I love shooting lifestyle shots of real moments. I am not a prop person. Too much work for me :) I like to concentrate on the light, the open lens and the person and their expression. If I had to cart around too many props I would loose what I love to photograph and thats the person, or the baby. For location inspiration I am always looking for areas that I can have a good sunset at, great color for the background and dead tall grass. No joke! Dead tall grass makes for the BEST backdrops! :) However, give me some bright color and Ill stay there all day!

13. Who is your photographer crush??

SkaiPhotography! LOVE her. Her processing, her crisp images with just enough color pop as well as her composition of her beautiful subjects. I also adore Andrea Tate from Crave photography. Not only is she AMAZING at what she does, she has a heart of gold and will teach anyone anything she can without a second thought.

14. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I REALLY want a studio one day. Chicago is pretty expensive so I am having a hard time justifying it just yet. I hope to have 8 clients a month, so I can meet my must have salary and still have plenty of time to be a mom.

15. anything you want to share? mentor? sell anything?

I currently teach newborn photography workshops with Erin Lato From EllPhotography. Our workshop is titled Hello Baby Newborn Workshop. I teach natural light as well as lifestyle photography and Erin teaches studio lighting. We both teach newborn posing. I also just started 1:1 and small group newborn mentoring. All of the info can be found on my site. If you follow me on facebook you will find I also do free photography and photoshop tutorials for my fans. A few of them can be found on my blog as well! I have a group on Facebook called Ask Emily and Erin (It got too big for just me!). Anyone is welcome to join. I am a newer fan of Cris Passos' work, I don't remember where I first saw her but I remember loving her fun colorful photos and I have been following her page ever since! Her photos are full of life and love ... and I just adore her pretty hazy processing :)

Meet the fabulous Cris Passos ...

What inspired you to become a photographer? My kids. I know most people would say the same thing but it really was them. When my first baby was born I was obsessed taking pictures of every second of his life.

Describe your style in 3 words? Colorful, Fresh, Ethereal

What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with?

My camera bag has: Canon 5dmiii and Canon 5dmii, 50mm 1.4, 35mm L 1.4, 100mm L 2.8 (macro), 24-70mm L 2.8, portrait expodisc, canon 580ex speedlite, batteries, compact flash cards, lipstick ;). My first DSLR was a Canon Rebel XS but when I started my business I had a Canon 50d.

At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

I love to be around babies and since I began my photography journey I tried to focus and specialize on mamas-to-be and babies. Newborn photography is my passion, I don't know exactly what drew me to newborn photography but I would say it just makes me very happy to work with those tiny little bundles of joy.

When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

It wasn't hard for me to find my own style; first I started using some actions but then I challenged myself to hand edit my images so I could have more control over the look I wanted to achieve. I guess it took me about a year to really define my style, but I am always experimenting new things in photoshop.

What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc... Best investment for my business for sure was going full frame.

Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

Self taught. I am very curious and love to google to learn more, but I attended Julie Paisley Photography workshop which I think helped me grow as a woman and as a photographer.

Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

90% of the time I use natural light, but I use studio light sometimes. I learned the best light is the light available!

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

My escape right now is playing tennis with some of my friends. We are trying to keep this exercise up at least once a week.

What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

Oh my goodness, I haven't been reading much. Not sure if this counts but I've been reading a lot with my 1st grade daughter!

Who is your photographer crush??

Wow it's hard to say with so many talented photographers out there, but I would name 3 of my favorites: Annie from Paint the Moon, Julie from Julie Paisley Photography, and Lindsay Silsby from Pied Piper Photography.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully I will be still photographing lots and lots of babies.

1. What inspired you to become a photographer?

The beauty I see in my children is what sparked the interest in photography for me. I didn’t suddenly want to become a photographer, but was more interested in freezing as many moments with my children as I possible. The amount of joy I get out of a photograph is incredible. I wanted to be able to give that same happiness to others, so my passion eventually turned into “being a photographer.”

2. Describe your style in 3 words?

Modern. Fresh. Personal.

My Nikon D700, 50mm lens, 60mm macro, and my x-rite color checker passport. My first DSLR was a D300.

4. At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

Starting my business I knew I wanted to specialize in newborns. I tried other session types early on, a couple families, some older children.. it just didn’t pull at my heart strings like newborns do. That new love, that special connection you have with your newborn.. nothing beats that. I wish every parent could have a photograph that would bring them back to that place in time.

5.When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

To be honest, I feel I am still finding myself. I am gaining something with each newborn I meet. Learning and growing, trying new things.. getting closer to finding myself with each session.

6.What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...

This is a tough question. I’d have to say attending workshops has been my best investment.

7. Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

I’ve had a lot of help along the way. A little over two years ago, towards the beginning of my journey, I mentored with Robin Long in Salem, Oregon. Her natural style and skin tones drew me to her, and I walked away with a new determination to nail white balance and exposure in camera. These things seem like “no duh” now, but it was new to me then! I also mentored with Jessica at JM Photography in Minneapolis, MN about 7 months ago. I always love her color choice and set ups. This girl has some skills in the posing and wrapping department, let me tell you! It was cool seeing how very different the two people I mentored with were. There isn’t just one way to do things, there are many, and it’s about finding what works for you and your business.

8.Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

I am all natural light right now. I admire photographers who do both flawlessly, and plan to be one of them eventually. I'm attracted to the consistency studio lights have to offer.

9.How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

I enjoy little escapes, like lunch with a friend, or shopping without my kiddos.

10. What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

I enjoyed reading “Something Borrowed” and “Something Blue” pretty recently and plan on reading other books by Emily Giffin. Easy to read and get lost in, not too heavy. I appreciate her style of writing.

11. What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?

Learn your camera. In manual mode.

12. Where do you look for inspiration? In person: locations, antique and thrift stores.

In person I let the newborn inspire me, those little babes really do have so much control of how the session goes. Doesn't matter what I have planned for them, when they show up, they tell me what they will and wont be doing ;)

13. Who is your photographer crush??

Top of my list- Kelley Ryden, Tracy Raver, and Kristen Mackey. I recently had the pleasure of watching Kelley and Tracy do my own newborn sons photo session. They were like magic, seriously, nothing short of amazing. I almost cried watching them with him. Kristen Mackey also pulls emotion out of me with her images, I don’t know how she does it.. everything from her perfect curly poses to her processing, it’s all spot on in my book.

14. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Let’s see, I’ve never been very good at answering this question. In five years my youngest will be starting kindergarten and my oldest a senior in high school. I’ll be freaking out! I’ll have gray hair, and probably be a few pounds heavier. OH, in business? I’ll be pleasantly busy, maybe with a partner in crime and an assistant or two.

meet Kristen Mackey ...

What inspired you to become a photographer?

I wasn’t one of those that was born with a camera in my hand, ha! I grew to love photography after the birth of my son in 2007.

Describe your style in 3 words?

Earthy, clean and fresh.

What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with?

I started out with a Canon Rebel and I quickly realized after taking classes that it wasn’t going to cut it. I then upgraded to the 40D and then the 5D Mark II. I currently lug around my Mark II and Mark III along with my 50 1.2L, 100 2.8L and 85 1.2L. All in my Libby bag by Kelly Moore. :)

At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

I specialized in 2010. I shot weddings in the beginning and while I loved them I made the decision to focus on my newborn work after the birth of my daughter in 2010.

When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

Oh gosh, I think everyone has their own style right off the bat but not everyone knows that. Sure, I looked online for inspiration but my style has always been earthy and clean.

What has been your best investment for your business?

Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc... Definitely my studio. I felt to really succeed I needed a studio space where all of my sessions were consistent.

Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

I’m one to read a ton and camera manuals are foreign to me. I took six classes at a local camera store before I opened my business. It was important for me to know my camera before I dove in.

Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

I shoot both! But only studio light in my studio. We’re currently in the process of building a studio that will accommodate natural light as well. I love to mix it up now and then; I shoot natural light a lot when I go on-location for mentoring sessions.

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

I love to knit. When my kiddos go to bed I curl up in the chair with my blanket, yarn and knitting needles.

What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

50 Shades of Grey… shhhh… ;)

What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?

To really learn your camera. Know your camera better than you know anything else. I see so many dive into photography without learning the technical aspect first. That is so important.

Where do you look for inspiration?

In person: locations, antique and thrift stores. How sad is it that when I browse a store I am always thinking of how I can apply items to newborn photography?! I love a good antique store.

Who is your photographer crush??

I love to look at wedding photography even though I don’t shoot weddings anymore. Love Jessica Claire.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully right where I am now, still photographing and loving on these precious blessings.

I have been loving those natural, organic photos lately, so choosing our next photographer was a no brainer. her photos are so pure and beautiful, and i could just get lost in her work for days! :)

meet the lovely Jenny Cruger ...

What inspired you to become a photographer?

My son. Cliché, but true. When you have a child, it’s hard to settle for photos that you know you can do better (ie wanted to stop using my point and shoot on him) and I knew if I picked up this skill again, and worked hard, I could create the look I had in my mind for his photos. I shot film in high school, and we had our own dark room, so he really inspired me to pick it up again (digitally at first, though I shoot both now).

Describe your style in 3 words?

Simple, pure, organic.

What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with?

I may or may not have a small collection of camera bags (1 Ketti, 2 Kelly Moore, 1 Shootsac) and to fill them: (all Canon) 5D Mark III and 5D Mark II, EOS 3 (film), 35L, 50L, 85 1.8, 100L, 135L. I started out with a Rebel XSi and 50 1.8.

At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

I firmly believe that while you can specialize in one genre of photography, you don’t have to be in just one genre to be specialized if that makes sense. I think your brand should show your specialty. My specialty is in my style, what my core values are, how my brand makes my specific clients feel, and the way I shoot & approach my subjects. I do have a major focus on newborns because I absolutely adore seeing a perfect, new, organic being and capturing every inch and detail of them.

When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

Early-Mid 2011 is when I really began shooting what I wanted, how I wanted, and processing how I wanted to. From there just grow and perfect, which is always on ongoing process. It took me a good year+ of shooting professionally to really figure out what direction I wanted to go with every aspect of my business and just this year I feel 100% confident turning away clients who don’t mesh well with my vision. It’s just not worth it, and ultimately, neither the client or I will leave happy and that’s not fair to clients. I got a call today from someone interested in an extended family portrait with matching clothing, etc. I told her I had to be completely honest with her in that I would not be the best person for that job, but would send her some recommendations of fellow local photographers who would love to shoot that. She thanked me profusely for being so up front with her. I think that’s really important. I send my clients links of clothes to wear or buy and work on all of that with them. They know if they choose me, we are creating a specific look together, or they would not (and should not) choose me.

What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...

Ooo that’s hard! I am going to say my natural light studio. It’s definitely an investment! It’s in a wonderful area of town and I am able to shoot my newborns and babies in there just the way I want to, in a space that just breathes comfort, calmness, and organic beauty. I also meet potential brides (and other clients) and hold in person viewing and ordering sessions there which is so important for my business. That said, I bought the 135L last Fall and you would have to pry it out of my hands. ;)

Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

I took film classes in high school, but otherwise self-taught. I did go to college for Business and then Music Business here in Nashville and I use that knowledge an awful lot as a business owner! The music industry and the photography industry is surprisingly similar, too.

Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

Natural light

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

I don’t. No… I try to set office hours. ;) My son goes to preschool 3 days a week and during that time I am either shooting, meeting with clients/fellow photographers, or doing computer work like editing, bookkeeping, blogging, invoicing, designing…it never ends! I work some evenings after he goes to bed and then of course weekends for weddings and/or portrait shoots. When I am not working, I’m playing with my 3 year old, cooking (always trying to make healthy vegan food), and I love to shop. I love to knit, and rarely have time, but I have a collection of yummy organic yarn waiting for my downtime. My husband and I have been making an effort to get away a few times a year, too. We went to Asheville, NC in May and will be visiting Michigan, where we grew up, for the first time together in many years this October. We were high school sweet hearts, so I’m excited to visit our old special places.

What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

The Starch Solution by Dr. John McDougall

What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?

Charge appropriately for your time and costs and if you ever shoot for free (which I think is okay to do starting out) YOU call the shots and get exactly what you want for your portfolio.

Where do you look for inspiration?

In person: locations, antique and thrift stores. I love driving through the country, old barns, wildflower/weed fields, small towns. I just planted a wildflower garden in our front yard which I’ve been meaning to do for a long time. I have a feel gardening will become a huge inspiration. I am growing lavender which is my favorite thing ever. Mix that with a dose of modern + simple and add a lot of feminine lace, layers, neutral tones and organic textures and I am one happy woman.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Personally I am eager to move to a small piece of land from our subdivision so our kid(s) and rescue dogs can have fun out in a large yard, we can have an organic garden, and little farmhouse and professionally I would love to be doing what I love still, photographing newborns + babies, young families, children, and some really awesome weddings and teaching other photographers.

i just wanted to share a recent session with you ... ive had this idea to combine two of my favorite things together (lace and ruffles!) for quite some time now but finally made it into a reality! this pretty lace ruffle teepee has been in the shop for about 3 months now and has gone crazy! i wish i could keep up with orders on these and offer them constantly :)

i have followed our next photographer for a few months now, and i just love her natural, organic style! im a huge fan of photos that are pure and simple and focus on baby, and she does this perfectly :) and im a sucker for neutrals, think my favorite color might be white!

meet Sandra ..

What inspired you to become a photographer?

In high school I spent most of my time in art class, and any chance I got, was drawing/sketching/painting portraits. I wanted to go into Art college, and at the last minute decided to go into nursing instead. My OAC art teacher brought his film SLR camera to class one day, and we all got to take self portraits with it, and then paint them with oil on canvas. That was my first experience with a “real” camera. Once I had my first baby (12 years ago), I decided to get an old used film SLR camera. I learned how to shoot manual with that camera. I went on to get a DSLR camera, and took images of my 4 kids as a hobby for years.

Describe your style in 3 words?

Simple, pure, classic. Although, I love to look at lifestyle work, and love some cutesy type props (when done well), my heart still goes back to simple portraiture. I love shadows, and I’m really drawn to moody black and whites.

What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with? I’m a Nikon girl. I started out with the D40x. I quickly upgraded to the D700 when I realized I needed my camera to be able to function well on a cloudy day in my studio! I have the 50 1.4 lens , 60 2.8macro, and the 35 1.8 lens.

At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

I went into nursing (even though I had such a love for art) because I also had a love for babies. I did part of my schooling in labour and delivery, post partum, and also worked closely with the lactation consultants. I went on to finish the lactation consultant course. I finally, I decided, when we had our fourth child, to put the two together. My love for artistic portraits, and babies. I new after my first newborn session, that I must do more. So, I started my business right away specializing in newborns and babies. I’m not a huge talker and like to be quite, so newborns and I work well together ;)

When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

I struggled with that for the first year. It wasn’t until recently, that I’ve gotten into a grove. I know what I like, and don’t like. My head is starting to clear from that whirlwind of the first year of info overload. You get so overwhelmed with all the new info, and images everywhere, you need to step back and think about what you really love.

What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...

My D700 was such a good decision. That camera does so well in my studio, even on a cloudy day. I still panic when it’s cloudy, and I need to increase that ISO, but I’m never disappointed with it. I love that camera.

Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

I am self taught. I did teach myself on my old film SLR the basics, but when I decided to go professional with it, I took every book out of the library possible, joined groups, read everything I could read on it. I have never taken any classes on camera or baby posing. It’s all been trial and error.

Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

I am all natural light. I don’t even own a flash. I wouldn’t have a clue what to do with it! I love the look of natural light. I know you can get studio lights to look just like natural light, but I worry I would never be able to.

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

When I’m not doing photography related things, I am doing stuff with my kids. I’m still a stay at home mom to 4 kids. 12, 9, 5, and 2, and I’m still a practicing R.N. at a walk in clinic in the evenings. I actually find those nights at the walk in clinic a nice break from photography, kids, cleaning…

What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

Haha…no time for reading!

What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?

Join an online group. Flickr was a great place for me to learn and make friends. It really opened my eyes to that whole other world of photography, photographers and business.

Where do you look for inspiration? In person: locations, antique and thrift stores.

Oh, I love antique shopping. I will sometimes sneak off on a Saturday afternoon to go to an antique store. Also fabric stores, I will often come up with a new idea of a set up when looking at fabrics. I could spend hours in those stores.

Who is your photographer crush??

Oh, I have a big crush on Kelley Ryden and Tracy Raver (but who doesn’t?!) Their calendars have been hanging in my kitchen for years, before I had even thought about doing newborn photography. I also love Keri Meyers and my most recent crush is Son Kissed photography.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I hope my work is wayyy better than it is today and I hope to have a handle on the business part of it all. I’m not a business person, so it is the hardest part for me. Maybe a studio space away from home even, that would be amazing.

What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc... FULL FRAME CAMERA ( markii) for sure! Then lenses. Props are great but I can shoot without them if I needed too.

Do you use natural light or studio lighting? 90% natural light but I do have strobes in my studio if it’s a dark day.

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape? I hang out with friends, craft or watch movies. It’s hard for me to get away.

What advice would you give to somebody just starting out? Learn your camera first. Then learn PS or Lightroom. Only once you have mastered both start a business. Do not jump into photography for a business until you are skilled enough. Don’t try crazy poses or crazy props until you can master a basic pose. If something doesn’t look safe don’t do it. Less is always more.

Where do you look for inspiration? In person: locations, antique and thrift stores. Online: Pinterest, Flickr, Facebook.

Who is your photographer crush?? Oh my gosh I have so many. But just a few are. Kelley Ryden, Milk & Honey, Wildflowers, Baby as Art, Jinky Art, Pinkle toes, Stephanie Pana, & Jordan Voth.

What inspired you to become a photographer?

Well, I already knew I loved photography, as so many others do, but to me I didn't look at it as even a possibility of a career for myself. It felt like “Oh man, that would be a dream job!” Then I started noticing that women who were no different than me were pursuing their dream of working as a photographer – so I guess I thought “I really want to try to do that, too!“ So when I was pregnant with our daughter in early 2010, I convinced my husband that we really needed a nice camera to capture our daughter growing up. I had ulterior motives ;) But ultimately it lead me to where I am, so no harm, right :)

Describe your style in 3 words?

Light, happy, emotive.

What is in your camera bag? And what equipment did you start out with?

A Nikon D700, 50 1.4, 105 2.8, 3 CF cards, a $5 bill, hand sanitizer, a toy car & train and a packaged rice krispy treat :))

Canon Xsi, kit lens and very soon after, a 50 1.8. I never shot with the kit lens after I got the 50 1.8. I shot with only the 50 for a good year. And I leaned a ton! Rock what you got.

At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

I knew from the beginning that weddings were not going to be my thing. I love kids, I love babies. So honestly it was a pretty easy decision. I practiced on my newborn daughter and my friends son who was the same age. I just enjoyed it and knew that's what I wanted to do. My focus is on newborns, babies and children.

When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

I was just looking back at my very first photo “session” in early 2010 and even at that time, I knew I loved details. Baby drool, baby rolls, little serious eyes looking at me with pure wonderment (or confusion? lol). I captured the details even at the beginning, so I know that's where my heart is. I love capturing real moments – real interactions. As far as processing – at the beginning I used a lot of actions. Vintage actions, really. Over time I got to know what I wanted more, and I got more comfortable with Photoshop and eventually Lightroom. Now my workflow is pretty simple and actions aren't really a part of it. You just grow and learn and evolve, I think that's true for everyone.

What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...

My blogsite is one of the best investments, actually. I was using a company who didn't get me high enough on searches and that was hurting me. My current site boosted me higher on search engines within the first week. Of course I have had to do some major search engine optimization (SEO) of my own. That's necessary for any business that wants to be found when someone searches online for the service they provide. The site I use is ProPhoto & I recommend it to anyone who asks which website they should go with.

Are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

I'm self-taught with much help from online sources with great articles from places like I Heart Faces, Clickin Moms, Inspire Me Baby and more. I soaked up everything I could and I still do. I have taken a few eLearning classes through Clickin Moms – those are a great and inexpensive way to learn something new!

Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

Natural light for me. I think it would be interesting to learn more about artificial lighting though! I don't think I'd change my style to using studio lighting, but it's always fun to learn new things.

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

Just hanging out with my family, really. Our 2-year-old is pretty hilarious and she takes up much of my time these days. I find her becoming one of my best friends, she is just so lovely to be around! I guess I never thought of having a 2-year-old best friend, but that's what I have :)

What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

Make a girl blush, why don'tchya. The 50 shades series. Geez. That's embarrassing, but seriously it is not all about “it”. There is a much bigger picture & it was an easy, fun, interesting read. Well, book 1 & 2 were. The third book took a lot of effort to finish, but I needed to know the ending :) How they are going to make that into a movie is beyond me, but I'm interested to see! I vote for Ian Somerhalder for Christian!

What advice would you give to somebody just starting out?

Network with other photographers. I know my husband isn't nearly as crazy about photography as I am, nor are my friends and family. And that's ok (ok, sometimes it's a big bummer!!! you get so excited to tell someone that you just learned manual! Or you are now shooting RAW! And if they aren't into it like you are – such a buzzkill.) but I really wanted someone to talk to about all of this – someone who had a passion for it like I did. There are so many groups, forums and places you can meet other photographers. Through the last couple of years I've really met (online met, for the most part) some amazing photographers & I love that I have places I can go to chat about photography and ask questions and get great answers.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Generally I just love soaking in the images from my favorite photographers. I love to see detail shots (close ups, macro) and really just art in which the baby is showcased and not the props. If you don't mind me listing some of my favorite photographers who I have love seeing in my Facebook newsfeed – I think these photographers are inspirational and your readers would love to see their work! A few of my favorites (and I have tons of favorites, so this is just a tiny portion) to watch are Wendy White , Kristen Mackey (Son Kissed Photography), Pinkle Toes, Jennifer Cusimano, Jennifer Morrow, Rachel Vanoven, Leah Cook, Sara Seeton, My Four Hens and Erin Tole. It goes without saying that Baby as Art rocks my socks, I think they do that to just about every newborn photographer!

Who is your photographer crush??

Oooo it's a new crush! I posted her page on my Facebook fan page recently. I came across her work – it was featured on Lemonade and Lenses & I went to her blog and got lost in her images. Seriously, I dare you to go look and not feel the same way. Summer Murdock Photography. Green with envy over her mad skills.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I'd like to see myself with a natural light studio space – for meeting with clients and showing them products – and possibly utilizing the space for newborns and parents. I'm not sure that's as far as 5 years away – I actually hope that can happen sooner. Dream big!

Rachael also makes some fabulous resources for photographers ... a crop comparison template, this helps your clients see how much a photo will be cut off when choosing sizes ... and blog templates, I can't stress how perfectly perfect these blog templates are! I use them about 90% of the time when posting a photo on Facebook or my website! They are simple and easy to use and make posting photos to your blog a breeze!

I have been following our next featured photographer since I started my own photography journey ... her photos are beautiful and timeless. I love her clean processing and simplistic view of newborn photography! It is very clear that her focus is on the precious little newborn. And I must say that she is one smart cookie ... she photographs weddings ... and, well, you know the song "first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in a baby carriage" :) And I am one lucky chickadee because she is taking our family photos next week! Woop woop! :)

Meet the fabulous Michelle of Michelle Newell Photography ...

What inspired you to become a photographer?
Like most photographers, I picked up a camera at an early age and learned how to develop my own film back in High School. Shortly after getting married in 2005, my husband and I attended my cousin’s wedding where I took over 200 snapshots, because as a new bride, I knew how extremely important it was to have images… any images of my wedding day. I gave all of the images to my Aunt and she later expressed that a lot of the images I had taken were better than the images they had received from their hired photographer and that I should really consider becoming a Professional Photographer.

My husband and I began discussing this idea at the same time that my brother was getting ride of all of his professional camera equipment… And so, we decided to invest in his equipment and explore the possibility while I built up my portfolio.

When did you start your business?
In 2006 I started to do a TON of research. I became of member of Digital Wedding Forum and began having my images critiqued, which is the only way, in my opinion that you will grow and be challenged as a photographer. Joining DWF was one of the BEST investments I made as a new photographer because I got to ask the best of the best in the industry all sorts of questions ranging from business to posing. It also gave me an opportunity to start working on a business plan.

In 2007 I booked my first wedding, having never shot a wedding before, and my business took off from there.

And what drew you to newborn photography?
When I first started my photography business, I photographed everything, but specializing only in weddings. I took family portraits, senior portraits, even animal portraits and QUICKLY learned what I loved and didn’t love.

In 2008 we found out that we were expecting our first child and that’s when everything started shifting for me. I started researching newborn photographers (and believe it or not, there weren’t that many of us) and landed on Carrie Sandoval’s website, Captured by Carrie. I immediately became obsessed with her images, I mean seriously, who hasn’t?! and knew that I had to try newborn photography. I also began researching maternity portraits, which also became a FAST love of mine as well.

Once my daughter was born I tried posing her and it was an epic fail. I did, however, capture a few images of her that still hang in my house to this day.

At what point did you specialize?
After my daughter was born everything started to shift and I started realizing more and more that the three areas that I loved photographing the most were weddings, maternity, and newborns. Those three areas in life are, in my opinion, life’s most amazing moments… And to be able to capture those for my clients is a true privilege and honor.

I still photograph families on occasion and also have collections for Baby’s First Year, but advertise heavily on my website, blog, and Facebook, the three areas I specialize in.

What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...
One of the best investments I made early on in my career as a photographer was joining DWF. I received SO – MUCH valuable information for some of the TOP wedding photographers in the world, which helped me focus on posing, business development etc. Another valuable investment has been joining Professional Photographers of America. This is another fabulous organization that is swarming with professionals to help take you to the next level.

Staying current with my gear and software has also been a really important to me so that I can run with the best of the best. I still have so much growing and learning to do, but want to make sure that my gear and software isn’t holding me back from creating high end images for my client. This to me is invaluable and a no brainer.

I have yet to upgrade to the Mark III’s but it is on my list =)

What was the last book you read (not photography related)?
The most current book that I am reading is called Crucial Conversations. HIGHLY recommend reading this book for personal reasons and professional. It teaches communication skills that are so important to know. And as a photographer, communication through an image goes hand in hand with being able to communicate to my clients in person.

Do you use natural light or studio lighting?
In my studio I use one continuous light, which is a 2ft x 3ft Westcott Spiderlite TD5, which I LOOOVE for all of my newborn sessions. Now that we are in a new studio space, I am planning on purchasing a 4ft x 6ft continuous light as well. Seriously loooove continuous light, especially for those dark winter nights. It allows me to really control the lighting and keep my images looking consistent throughout the entire session.

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?
I love to garden… And so being out in my yard tends to be my escape from things. It allows me to rejuvenate and rest. I also love just being with my family. I am a major homebody and there is nothing more relaxing than just being outside and enjoying a lovely afternoon with my husband and daughter.

Where do you look for inspiration?
I love looking through my Professional Photographer Magazine, which introduces me to so many photographers who are working in fields drastically different from mine. Their work inspires me to create and thing outside of the norm of what I am currently doing and thing of ways to push myself to the next level.

I also look to photography books for inspiration, which are another area that really help challenge and push my thinking. Some of my favorite books that I have purchased over the years are:

When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?
Gosh… developing your own style can definitely take a while… but I would say it was around 2009 that I started falling into a consistent patter with my editing; so, probably a year and a half.

Re: shooting style, I feel like that is always evolving for me. I try to push myself to think outside of the “normal” to take things to the next level creatively.

And are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?
Apart from taking 1 photography class in High School, I would say I am a self taught photographer. =) Some of the BEST books that I read early on to help me learn my camera and to shoot 100% on Manual are Bryan Peterson’s books: Understanding Exposure and Thinking Creatively.

In late 2010 I started working on a Baby Safe | Newborn Posing Guide to help educate aspiring and beginner newborn photographers on the importance of newborn safety. It has been SO much fun to watch see so many photographer from around the world purchase a guide.
I hope to begin working on an guide for moderate to advanced photographers which will give more detailed information on how to edit and pose.

We also developed a website, which has featured photographer from around the world who are willing to teach aspiring photographers the importance of newborn safety.

Our next photographer is pretty darned popular in the St. Louis area, she's won awards and has some pretty awesome celebrity clients :) And I am lucky to be able to attend her workshop next month! Meet the lovely Stephanie Cotta ...

What inspired you to become a photographer?

Jacob Allan, our first little one, was born back in February of 2009. I started blogging about our new family as a way to document all of our days and with that came a need for lots of photographs… He changed so quickly that I just didn’t ever want to look back and not really remember all of those special (or not-so-special moments). Those photographs from those first few months are so precious to me… my attempts at styled sessions with my perfect little model, my first attempts at editing… and while it was so not perfect, it did what I needed it to do at that time… forever allow me to remember those days of baby’s first year.

At what point did you specialize? And what drew you to newborn photography?

I’ve always loved babies… old photographs of me with our extended family will always show me with one of my little cousins or siblings in my arms. April of 2010 was when I decided to really take my passion for photography and turn it into a business. Without a doubt, I choose to specialize in newborns. There is something so special about those first two weeks with a new baby… the new love, curled bodies, teeny toes and fingers… it’s really just amazing and I love documenting it for people.

What is in your camera bag?

Canon 5d Mark II, 50 mm 1.4 and 100 mm 2.8. And lip gloss. And Smarties. Yes, Smarties. It’s my go-to bribery trick to get the older siblings to pose with their new baby brother or sister. Melts in their mouth, no mess and they can be eating it (and smiling) while I grab the shot and no one can ever tell.

What has been your best investment for your business? Camera upgrade, lens, prop, etc...

Upgrading to a full frame camera was definitely a big one. I would also have to say the decision to go into an actual studio. I used to do all of my newborn sessions out of my home and I felt more limited in space, along with the fact that it was hard for Jacob to not want to be with me when I was right there. Not only is the lighting in my studio amazing, but it’s so much nicer to have the work/home separation.

What was the last book you read (not photography related)?

I love all of Jodi Picoult’s novels, I’ve been trying to find the time to read 50 Shades of Grey (yes, I know.. how could I not have read that yet?), but to be completely honest the last book I read was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to Jacob and Audrey Rose. And The Giving Tree.

Do you use natural light or studio lighting?

All natural light. My studio has an entire row of east facing windows which provides the most gorgeous light for morning/early afternoon newborn sessions.

How do you "get away" from business? What is your escape?

Turn. Off. The. Computer. It’s a tricky thing to do and to really make myself do in the evenings, but I must. I love editing sessions, but I have to remind myself that it doesn’t have to always be right away. I give my clients a two to three week turnaround time for their gallery and I have a twenty-four hour policy in terms of returning emails/phone calls (except on the weekend). I remind myself that my little ones and my family are my priority, I workout to keep myself feeling good, and my husband and I try to sneak away at least three times a month for a date together.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Everywhere! On walks in the park with Jacob and Audrey Rose, magazines, play dates, afternoon get-togethers…. I think there is beauty in so many places in this world. It’s about finding that one little thing/prop/pose/etc.., brainstorming about how to add my own style to it, and then making it happen. I’ve been known to type notes into my phone at 4:00 in the morning because an idea has just come to me.

When did you figure out your own style? How long did it take to find YOU?

I think my style first evolved when I picked up a camera and focused on a newborn. Somewhere between then and now, I came up with ways to create art with a newborn in a simple, classic way that forever keeps the focus on the newborn and how perfect they truly are.

When did you start your business? And are you self-taught or did you take classes to help you get where you are?

I officially started my business in April of 2010. Completely self-taught, although I could argue that my Bachelors in Psychology and Masters in Mathematics has helped me in certain areas of this business. I’m definitely a perfectionist and believe that my many hours of watching YouTube videos, reading manuals, practicing (failing) and then practicing some more (and some more) have helped develop my ability.
