And in the summer months, the heat and humidity wasn't helping.

We had the amazing opportunity to try Oxy Clinical, a new line of product from Oxy that included an entire regimen of skin-care products. It included an Advanced Face Wash, Clearing Treatment, and Hydrating Therapy. I took a few minutes to explain to my daughter what each one did, and how to use it. I then gave her a week to try it!

She plays sports and works outside a lot -- meaning she sweats. The first day she tried it, she used the wash and commented on how her face felt like there was nothing left on it (dirt) and that it didn't irritate her like some other products have. She also applied the Clearing Treatment to her hairline (where she has the most problems) and the Hydrating Therapy on the other parts of her face. We noticed her acne was smaller and less red in just 9 hours after starting the treatment! The website claims that the Clearing Treatment can start to work in as little as 8 hours, so we credit the quick results to that product.

She has continued to use Oxy Clinical regularly for her entire face, and we have seen improvements. Her acne isn't completely gone, but that is because we are having to train her not to touch her face (something that is a problem for me, as well.) With some more practice and regular use of the products, I believe that it is our best chance at fighting acne -- and winning.

For more information on this new offering from Oxy, see the product page at the Oxy website.

HABA products are lovingly and carefully made in Germany, so they have a unique look about them that you can't get anywhere else! This is one of the reasons why the sheep blanket (or "Habalinos" as the website calls it) was so neat! A whimsical and cuddly sheep face adorns this super-soft fleece mini-blanket. We took this to the hospital when our new son was born, and provided it to him in his bassinet at the hospital. (It already had my scent on it, so it was comforting to him during his stay!) It has lots of little knots and places for baby to grab and suck on!

We also enjoyed sharing the discoverer's meadow ball with our baby. A bit too young to more than look at it, my son did get excited when we showed it to him. The ball is brightly-colored, soft, and covered in tiny creatures from nature! My 3-year-old likes to pull this out of the baby's toy box and play with it sometimes, too! I can tell that this is well-constructed, and will last many years at my house. (When kids outgrow the ball, it will make a perfect hand-me-down toy!)

HABA's quality toy construction makes their products well worth the money. You can buy them at specialty retailers and online at places like Oompa.com. Which HABA toy is your favorite? For more information on the entire line of HABA's new toys, see their website at http://www.habausa.com/

*Samples of each product were received for review. Opinions are 100% my own.

Marriott has recently teamed up with my kids' favorite cartoon character -- Spongebob -- to offer families a fun stay when they travel! As part of the Nickelodeon Your Stay program, we sampled a bag of goodies that parents can arrange for kids to receive when staying at these hotels. My kids were ecstatic to see so many fun Spongebob themed items!

When you book a stay at any of over 2,000 hotels with Marriott brands, you can also "Nickelodeon Your Stay!" Kids can enjoy free activities to keep them busy during your trip -- isn't that a relief?

Learn more about it, or book a stay online at http://www.nickelodeonyourstay.com/, you can also print out fun goodies from the freebie section of the website!

I have a 6-year-old son who loves making houses out of them. I can often hear him muttering under his breath when the houses fall and he has to start over. But he loves them! Another son likes to play "War" with his sister. It is one of the simplest games a small child can play, and the games seem to last forever!

Bicycle has made it very easy to teach your kids how to play with cards. Their website has a tool that lets you search for the directions for most any card game -- along with illustrations -- so if you haven't played Solitaire or Hearts in a while, you can brush up in no time.

The cards are becoming popular enough to warrant coupons in the Sunday paper (I saw them not too long ago), and stores are bringing the Bicycle brand back to shelves where cartoon character cards used to sit. I like that they are simple to read, and that the kids can count on them to all look the same when playing with multiple decks!

In celebration of their milestone achievement (125 years), Bicycle is giving away some pretty neat prizes in an instant win game. You can check it out until 12/31/2010! And don't forget to learn about all their card play instructions at www.bicyclecards.com

Do you have memories of playing cards as a kid? What about playing them now? They have been a great way to spend a few minutes with my kids when a busy life could easily keep me from connecting with them!

*Bicycle Cards were received for this post.
There has been a number of blinds recalled due to strangulation hazards. If you are not following them, here is the most recent one.

As an added, personal note, our younger son was almost killed when he became entangled in some cord blinds many years ago. Our story has been published in the recent issue of Parents magazine. Thankfully, our then 4-year-old son came to the rescue, and our son suffered no permanent injuries.

We recommend that you take a moment to check your home (and the homes that you visit) for any window coverings that may have been recalled or could cause danger to your children.

Stay Safe!!

Perhaps the biggest perk to the Garanimals clothing line (besides the fact that they are UBER-affordable and fit any budget) is that they match. Seriously. Every piece with a given color (blue, for example) matches every other piece in the seasonal line with the same color. You can buy several shirts, shorts, or skirts and then have your kid pick out a top and bottom from their drawers for the day -- and they can never go wrong. This means kids can be independent and look good, without hassle from Mom or Dad!

I also love how easy these items are to care for. My 5-year-old loves his blue striped t-shirt and athletic shorts. They are a super-bright blue that matches his eyes, and when he recently doused the entire outfit in BBQ sauce, I was able to apply a stain treater and get everything out -- no problemo! (They also keep their bright colors through many washings.)

You've probably seen the Garanimals line at Walmart and wondered how they can be of such high quality -- since they are so inexpensive. Well, this company has been giving families a budget-friendly clothing option for a long time, and they do it well!

You can see the entire line of clothing for the summer at Garanimals.com -- and order online through Walmart.com!

*Sample outfits were received for this review. Opinions are 100% my own.

These neat "stories" are animated tales that kids can watch and follow along with on your iPhone or iTouch. Familiar fables, like Little Red Riding Hood, for example, are narrated in English, or you can let you child do the reading. The fun sound effects and characters really keep little ones entertained. It's perfect for waiting outside a doctor's office, or anywhere else that your child needs a little fun to keep them out of trouble.

One super feature of these stories is the ability to record your own voice reading the stories. Isn't that cool? All you need is a microphone capability, and you can have the stories play for your child with Mommy or Daddy's voice. What kid wouldn't want to read these stories again and again? (Just in case they get bored of a title, there are a total of 5 different stories to choose from: Princess & the Pea, King Midas, The Tortoise & the Hare, Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Bears)

All of the titles are available via the iTunes stores for instant download to your iPhone or iTouch!

Wanna Win? We are giving away a $25 iTunes GC to one lucky reader! Simply leave a comment on this post telling us which My Living Stories you'd like the most. You have until August 2nd at 11:59 am CST to get your entries in. (Be sure to give us a way to reach you if you win, and remember that we will never use your email or contact info for anything other than to send your prize.)

We have a wonderful prize pack from Stouffer's to help you "fix" dinner at your own home (and if it doesn't need "fixing", we're sure you'll enjoy it, anyway!) We'll be giving two lucky readers their very own prize pack from Stouffer's including a coupon for a free family-sized dinner from Stouffer's, a Family Dinner Box of Questions for family conversation, and a limited edition "Let's Fix Dinner" book from award-winning artist and author Todd Parr (this book is really cute!)
Stinky.

My husband comes in from working outside in a heat index of 115+ and I just want to run away. He is really sweaty when he gets in! We have tried so many deodorants over the years, and he either doesn't like the protection or I hate the odor. (Some of them actually smell MORE like sweat than his sweat alone.)

We tried the new line of Speed Stick for both Ladies and Men. I was already a Lady Speed Stick fan, both for it's adequate protection and it's super price. (I can always get it on sale with a coupon and pay little to nothing!) My hubby had tried the Men's version, as well, but it wasn't something we really talked about much. I mean, who discusses these things with their spouse, anyway?

After allowing him to try the new Men's Speed Stick with Stain Guard for a week, he told me how he really enjoyed how dry it kept him -- which is a big deal. He usually tells me that he hates a new brand, and tosses it in the trash. (He's picky that way.) What I loved was how GOOD he smelled, even after working all day. This stuff just makes your man pleasant. As far as the stain guarding goes.. I guess it works? He never really got too sweaty, so his shirts stayed drier, and I'm assuming that is where some of the stain guard protection comes in. In any case, we appreciated how well it worked.

I also enjoyed the Ladies' version, but I kind of expected I would (I was already a fan, remember?) For those hot days when you want to stay dry AND protect your shirts from stains, this is a product we will recommend for the ladies and the men. For more information, visit the Lady Speed Stick site (where you can print a 75cent off coupon) and Men's Speed Stick Site. Both items are available in retailers near you and Amazon.com.

*Samples of both products were received to review. Opinions are 100% my own.

(Soapnut shells by gadl via Flickr)

Last year, I bought a few packages of soap nuts, along with some essential oils to try them out as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional soap. Did they work? Yes... I think. I know that my clothes got clean, and there was even the same amount of soapy residue in my clothes as usual when done washing (I know this from the water that came out of my Spin Dryer when drying.) I can't, however, prove that the cleanliness was from the nut itself, or more as a result of the soap that may have already been left in my clothes. I could tell that the nut got "used up" after several loads, which leads me to believe that they are more powerful at the beginning of their lifespan AND if the stuff that comes out of them cleans at all.. they probably do what they say.

A bit spendy for a small package, one could buy a bulk bag and do a modest amount of laundry on a tight budget. Doing 3-4 loads a day, however, may be a bit much in the spending department. I would recommend using them the maximum amount of washings you can (squeeze them to see if they have any life left after each load) and buy the essential oils used to "scent" the load from a wholesaler and not the retailers that actually sell the soap nuts. (They tend to charge more.)

We abandoned the regular use of soap nuts soon after we tried them. They worked OK, but we really just couldn't afford to keep using them (and my husband's work clothes and the boys play things need EXTRA soap that just wasn't budget-friendly on the soap nut plan.)

What has your experience been with these clever little nuts?

Here is the basics of the product: Super comfy outer covering, anti-leak layer built right in, and removable absorbent insert to collect all the dirty stuff. The idea behind this diaper is awesome: You can use it like a cloth, but it's more absorbent and with less mess. (Plus you can totally adjust it to fit almost any size baby with the numerous snaps located all over the diaper.)

The biggest perk to this diaper, besides the obvious environmental plusses, is that it is really cute. It is also very snuggly! Yes, you heard me... a "snuggly" diaper! My little guy almost didn't fit into his when born (he weighed less than 7 pounds) but he did. The diaper was a bit overwhelming in size, as it's a one-size fits all product, but it did work. And these diapers are less gross than other cloth options -- you can shake out the solid mess right over the toilet, leaving just the "wet" part to launder separate from the outer shell.

Actually affordable, the Smartipant is only $40 for a 3-pack, and you can buy lots of extra inserts to keep up with all the dirty messes your little guy or girl will leave behind. They come in cute colors and with just 24 needed for one baby (as compared to thousands of disposable diapers), it's possible to save some cash, too! If you're looking for an alternative to disposable, these one-size options may be for you.

Find out more about these Made in the U.S.A diapers at Smartipants.com or "Like" them on Facebook!
There has been a rather large recall of over-the-counter medicines that all families should be aware of. It includes certain varieties of Tylenol, Benadryl, and Motrin (including some children's brands.) See the full list of affected items and info for getting a refund at the Tylenol website.

Some of you may already know that I'm a member of the very awesome Sharpie Squad. It's a band of artists, bloggers, and other creatives who use Sharpie markers in their work and play, then share their experiences, new product developments, and opportunities with their readers. So why, do you ask, am I on the team?

I know.. it seems a bit unbalanced. I am neither creative nor artsy. I blog, but don't ooze the certain kind of magic that people like Mark Rivard and Man One do. I don't design any of my own stuff, and my writing isn't exactly what you'd call "creative."

But I do love me some Sharpie.

I'm a freelancer, a homeschooling mom of 5, a forgetful person, and a performance-based nightmare. I want things to be just right, but lack the vision to get it done. Sharpies are my solution to so many things, and so while I don't doodle with style, envision great projects for making my artistic mark on the world, or even make a very good stick figure, I do the best I can. Sharpie, I believe, gives me a bit of an edge that I wouldn't otherwise have.

Here are some ways that I love Sharpie daily:

Marking freezer bags when I cook up a giant mess of hamburger to store in the freezer (or green peppers, or chili, or fresh cherries that I've just picked.) Believe me.. you don't want to be pulling out UFO's (Unidentified Frozen Objects) to reheat for dinner. I'm just sayin'.

Signing checks for my business. (The Sharpie pens don't smear or bleed through the checks, and I love endorsing a fat freelance check with the orange color.)

Letting the kids cut loose. (Yes, I give my kids under age 8 Sharpie markers. They have fun with them, and we have had a relatively few incidents that caused me to get "angry.")

Highlighting the important stuff. (My kids use the highlighters to mark passages in their homeschool books and bibles. They work really well!)

So there you go. I'm less likely to paint a huge mural or decorate my sneakers as some others on the Sharpie Squad, but that's OK. Sharpies are for everyone -- even those with slightly less talent. As a freelancer and a blogger, however, they give me a professional edge (just check out this piece I published on napkin rings for kids). As a Mom and wife, they give me tools for doing the jobs I need to do every day.

And that's what Sharpie's about... no?

Disclosure: I am a brand advocate for Sharpie by being a Sharpie Squad 2010 participant. I receive product from Sharpie to use, and in return share my opinions of Sharpie news. All opinions are 100% my own.

I tried a selection of underWAY and Smart for Life products this past week as part of a blog tour by MomCentral. I didn't absolutely love all the products, but there were a few that I really think I would spend my own money on -- they were that good. Here's a rundown of what we like (and didn't) about this line of options for those seeking to lose or maintain weight.
The underWAY drinks were by far the best. They reminded me of some protein water drinks I've tried in the store. They are fruity (but not too sweet), and contain 2 servings per bottle. Enriched with what they call HeroFiber (1/3 of your day's daily fiber), each bottle is designed to help fill you up while you stay hydrated -- with only 20 calories! I found these so easy to drink, and I could tell that I wasn't as hungry as I usually am between snacks and meals (note: I am nursing my son, so while I probably eat more calories than the average woman, my goal is to not nosh on unhealthy snacks throughout the day. These drinks seemed to help prevent sudden urges to dig into the candy drawer.) With no preservatives or artificial flavors, and being sodium and caffeine free, I liked both the Acai Pomegranate and the Grape flavors equally. Keep them in the fridge for the best flavor.

The Smart for Life products were fun to try, as well. There was an assortment of muffins, cookies, bagel chips, soup, and cereal that were designed to keep you eating up to 6 times a day while getting LOTS of good fiber (and the ingredients are mostly organic). Similar to the popular "cookie diet" you could eat 6 cookies (or muffins) a day while in the most aggressive phase of this eating plan. Since I require at least 1800 calories a day for my baby nursing needs, I used the cookies and muffins as a replacement for some of my not-so-healthy snacks. I found that I was very satisfied after eating one, and didn't crave other sweets (these were already very sweet on their own!) My favorite is the carrot muffin -- they were like a tiny carrot cake. A little dry right out of the package, the directions recommend that you microwave it for a few seconds for the best flavor, and I agree. With 10 seconds in the micro, they came out soft, warm, and the frosting very gooey. These were delish!

The other types of cookies and muffins weren't bad. They reminded me of a meal replacement bar (which I like), but with no horrible aftertaste. I don't know if I could eat 6 of these products in a day (I get very tired of the same thing), but if you are determined to use a product like this, I would recommend them. They are much better than some boring and flavorless products on the market, and if you have fallen victim to a sweet tooth, they may be your way out!

All in all, my opinion of these two brands was very favorable. I'm not a big believer in fad diets, so I read the labels on the products very carefully 1) to ensure that I wasn't eating anything too foreign and 2) to be sure that it wouldn't interfere with my other dietary needs

If you've tired of crash diets, and understand that not eating is not an option for losing weight, you'll probably like the eating plans presented by these products. You get to eat, it tastes rather good, and you'll not feel deprived during the time you're on the plan.

I tried the single serving microwave bowl the other night after everyone had gone to bed and my baby had just nursed for an hour straight. I was starving, and didn't want to cook up anything messy. But I was really craving a rich comfort food. I pulled the package that Kraft had sent me to try and popped it in the microwave (after adding the right amount of water, of course.) A few minutes later, and I was mixing the cheese packet right in (no milk or butter required.) It was delicious! The cheese sauce was so creamy, and the flavor rocked! This may be my favorite night time snack :)

The Cheddar Explosion comes in a box and single-serving microwavable bowl. There are also two other new flavors with just as much flavor: Grilled Cheese Explosion and Extreme Cheese Explosion. We had these for dinner the other night (along with BBQ meatballs) and they earned my kids' seal of approval (i.e. there was none left for leftover night!)

You can find out all about the new flavors at Kraft's mac and cheese website!

Then, I started hearing about Kung Zhu -- a more masculine version of the robotic hamster. I wasn't sure it was all it was cracked up to be, but I volunteered through MomSelect to let my boys be the ultimate deciders of how "cool" these little Ninja and Military-inspired pets would be.

We received a few hamsters, sets of armor, training sets, and the ultimate in Kung Zhu products: The Battle Arena. The boys went nuts opening all the boxes, setting up the training sets (which was so easy my 3-year-old figured it out in minutes), and putting armor on their hamsters. Batteries were already included, so play time began immediately. After a couple of minutes of "learning the ropes" the boys had put their hamsters through the training courses and were ready to battle it out in the giant Battle Arena. (This thing is big, so if floor space is a premium, beware!)

Since we have carpet in EVERY room except the dining room/kitchen, the boys crowded around our table and set up their Kung Zhu empire. They played for hours.. no joke, and Zhu Zhu was the first thing on their mind when they woke up for the next 5 days.

Needless to say, they loved these toys. The batteries eventually ran out on 2 of the 3 hamsters, giving me a chance to box them up and add them to our "toy rotation." The youngest son asked for his "Zhu Zhu's" once or twice before the pool went up at grandma's, and now they are distracted with outdoor activities for the next few weeks.

I'm confident that once we get back to indoor play, the hamsters will be met with eagerness from the boys. They were completely OBSESSED with these toys while I let them play with them. I honestly just needed a break.

If you want to get your money's worth out of a toy, I think these may be it! Of the 3 boys, the 3 and 5 year old loved them the most. My 6 year old isn't really a "toy" kind of kid (he likes to draw and paint), but he played along for most of the activity.

Here's a video of our 3- year-old yelling "Go Zhu Zhu Go!" and enjoying his Kung Zhu:

These hamsters are cute, but feature some fun interactive "battle" play that isn't too violent (they're hamsters!) and lets kids get creative by building and mixing different training sets, armor, and accessories. I'm not too keen on any toy that encourages kids to "collect them all", but I love that they stayed entertained for days while I was trying to get things done after the birth of our new baby. Just be careful -- Zhu Zhu accessories hurt when you step on them.. believe me!!

The perks of this game is the interactive play. You can be any one of the characters at any time, making it easy to use Fiona, Shrek, Puss in Boots, or Donkey's unique skills to solve puzzles and challenges as you face them. Shrek is continually weaving in and out of his real world and an alternative reality -- something that keeps the game play fresh and helps to build imaginations in kids!

There was nothing I really objected to in this game. It is rated E10+ for mischief and mild lyrics. It isn't anything more outrageous than the actual movie, however, so if you find the film to be appropriate for your family, the game will be just fine! I loved the teamwork aspect of this game. It was fun to watch all of my kids working together as different characters on the same side. How often do you see that in a game these days?

With impressive graphics, enjoyable music, and, of course, the branding that only the Shrek franchise can offer -- this is a game that my kids get out over and over. Available for the Wii, NDS, PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, you can order it from Amazon.com or your favorite video game retailer.

Colgate has made it easy for concerned parents to get their babies into a good dental routine. With their line of My First Colgate products, I know that I can't go wrong when cleaning baby's mouth and teeth. We especially like the Infant and Toddler toothpaste. It's fluoride free (so no need to worry if they swallow some), and it has no artificial colors or preservatives! And if you find yourself frustrated with toothpastes that come out messy and end up causing you more housework in the bathroom, you'll love the packaging. It's super efficient and easy to keep tidy.

I was equally impressed with the toothbrushes. Tiny, soft bristles and brightly-colored handles will get toddlers excited about brushing, and are easy to handle for kids and the adults who may be helping them brush correctly.

Before you invest in expensive tooth products for baby, go with a name you already know. Colgate is available in most stores, and fits the budgets (and mouths) of kids and their parents. Find out more about all of Colgate's oral health line at www.colgate.com
