My Scabbard…finito!

Dopo una lunga attesa eccoci qui finalmente a presentare lo scabbard ultimato…ancora non mi par vero!

After a long wait I can introduce to you my scabbard…ended! I can’t believe it!

Non posso che ritenermi soddisfatta del risultato e sono felice di averlo disfatto sebbene ciò mi abbia portato a perdere la mia personale sfida del NaKniSweMo…ma pazienza!
E’ bastato avviare meno punti per il collo e poi fare più aumenti nei giri successivi per risolvere il problema che me lo aveva fatto ricominciare.

I’m so proud of this result and happy with having unpicked it although I couldn’t win my personal NaKniSweMo challenge…patience!
I managed the sweater trouble casting on less stitches for the neck and then increasing more on the following rounds.

La lavorazione, grazie alle trecce e allo spessore del filato, procede veloce ma mai noiosa, per un effetto finale davvero considerevole…le trecce si dipartono grandi per poi convergere sotto l’ascella in una piccola trecciolina che scende lungo i fianchi fino alla vita per poi riallargarsi…stesso gioco si ricrea nelle maniche :)

Knitting, thanks to cables and the thickness of this yarn, is fast but never boring, with a final amazing effect…cables start big (horseshoe) then join under armpits in a little cable that goes down to the hips where they become bigger again…the same trick has been used on the sleeves :)

Che dire poi del filato…io adoro semplicemente l’Araucania e per chi non lo avesse capito anche il viola…per di più la lana tinta a mano consente degli effetti particolari per cui man mano che lavoravo mi ritrovavo con parti più chiare ed altre più scure..e sotto il seno si sono formate anche delle righe di colore del tutto casuali che rendono il maglione davvero unico nel suo insieme.

What can I say about this yarn?…I simply adore Araucania and purple too (if someone has not realized it yet ). Besides, hand dyed yarn creates great effects sometimes, so while I was knitting I could find lighter or darker areas along the work…and under the breast some coloured rows appeared…and it made my sweater unique on the whole.

Di addii e nuovi arrivi

Questa presina è il mio primo esperimento all’uncinetto. Avevo sei anni e a guidarmi era mia nonna. Di lei vi avevo già parlato nel mio primo post che non credo abbiate letto in molti. Poco più di un mese fa Lei ci ha lasciati fra lo stupore di tutti per il rapido epilogo inatteso. Ho avuto bisogno che passasse del tempo prima di tornare a riscrivere in questo spazio che se esiste è solo grazie alla passione per i lavori manuali che lei mi ha trasmesso. E scriverò ancora a lungo perché è per mezzo di quest’arte che lei continuerà a vivere attraverso me :)

This pot holder is my first crochet experiment. I was 6 years old and my granny was leading me. I had already told you about her in my first post but I don’t think many of you read it. About a month ago She left us among everybody’s astonishment for this sudden unexpected epilogue. I needed some weeks before being ready to write again in this space, that only exists thanks to the fondness for handmade I inherited from her. And I’ll write here more and more because it’s through this art that she will survive by means of me :)

In quest’ultimo mese è anche arrivato qualcuno…una vita è iniziata e mi ha fatto tanto tanto emozionare…Simone ben arrivato e mille auguri alla mia carissima amica Tzugumi!

Last month something more happened, something much happier…a life arrived and made me feel so touched…finally Simone was born so congrats to my dear friend Tzugumi!

Ho un sacco di lavori finiti da farvi vedere per cui, pioggia permettendo, in questi giorni esco a fare due passi e mi porto dietro un carrello con dentro tutto per set fotografico..intanto vi auguro un buon anno :)

I’ve got many wool projects to show you so, rain permitting, these days I’ll go out carrying a trolley with everything I need for my photoshoots…now I wish you a happy new year :)

Sì. Lapidario post per aggiornarvi sulle vicissitudini del mio Scabbard. Non mi convinceva per nulla il collo, troppo largo e anche riprendendo i punti non sono riuscita a dargli una forma che mi desse soddisfazioni :(
L’unica cosa da fare in questi casi è prendersi di coraggio e disfare tutto. Ci riprovo, in fondo in 10 giorni ero riuscita a fare un bel po’ di lavoro per cui ce la potrei ancora fare…
Avvierò meno punti sottraendoli alle maniche per fare maggiori aumenti nei giri seguenti ed userò un ferro ancora più piccolo per il collo.

Vedremo!

Yeah. Lapidary post to update my Scabbard adventure. I didn’t like the neck at all, too large, even unpicking the stitches to knit a turned hem I was not satisfied with the shape it had. :(
The only thing to do was to take heart and unravel everything. I’ll try again, I had been knitting just for 10 days and did so much so I think I may succeed…
I’ll cast on less stitches for the sleeves increasing them on the following rows and I’ll use even smaller needles to knit the neck.

We’ll see!

Un diavoletto tentatore, ai più noto col nome all’apparenza innocuo di Yards of yarn, la scorsa settimana proponeva l’ennesima tentazione, che io ho subito colto!

Il National Knit a Sweater in the Month of November: le regole sono chiare e semplici: realizzare un maglione entro il mese di novembre. E questo significa che, per l’appunto, bisogna iniziare l’1 novembre. E oggi che giorno è??
:) Evviva…finalmente si parte!
In questa settimana ho spulciato in lungo e in largo ravelry perché non riuscivo a trovare uno schema che mi convincesse o che fosse adatto al mio filato, un sofficissimo lilla dell’Araucania. Il mio obbiettivo era un pullover, non un cardigan stavolta, e che avesse le maniche lunghe. Ovviamente tutti i maglioni stupendi che mi passavano sotto gli occhi erano con maniche a 3/4. Ma io freddolosa per come sono ho bisogno di coprire anche i polsi! Dunque saltellando anche fra pattern già acquistati mi sono imbattuta nella risposta a tutte le mie esigenze: il Silken Scabbard. Il collo però lo farò come quello della versione summer.
Cercavo le trecce e finalmente le ho trovate. Me felice!
Campione già approvato, matasse gomitolate, cavi avvitati…donne, incrociate i ferri per me: si parte!!!

A little tempter devil, well known as the apparently harmless Yards of Yarn, last week suggested the umpteenth temptation, to which I gave in!

The National Knit a sweater in the Month of November: rules are clear and easy: to take part in it you have to knit a sweater by the end of November. Which means: to start you have to wait for the 1st November. And today is…??
:) Viva…finally we start!
These days I’ve been over ravelry with a fine-tooth comb because I couldn’t find a pattern that suited my yarn, a very soft violet Araucania. My aim was a pullover, not a cardigan this time, with long sleeves. Obviously all the fantastic sweaters I found had three quarters sleeves. But I’m always too cold so I need to cover my wrists too! So, jumping among already bought patterns I found the answer to all my needs: the Silken Scabbard. I’ll knit the neck as the summer version says.
I was looking for cables and finally Found them. So happy!
Swatch done, skeins transformed into balls, needles & cable ready…women, needles crossed for me: let’s start!!!

Ps. cosa non trascurabile, ho anche questo fantastico testing sui ferri…novembre sarà per me tutt’altro che noioso ;)

Ps. not unimportant, I’ve got this fab testing on my needles as well…november is going to be anything but boring ;)

Di quando sono stata lo scorso anno a Trieste mi pare che ve ne ho già parlato. Dei regali che ci siamo scambiate pure, mi sa. E del progetto che volevamo realizzare…ah sì anche.
Ma.
Ma non vi ho detto di come ho realizzato alcuni dei miei regalini, no quello no.

I had already talked about my trip to Trieste last year...I think. About the gifts we gave to each other too, I believe. And about the project we were trying to start….oh, yes about it too.
But.
But I haven’t told you yet how I made some of my gifts, not that.

Ecco, lo faccio oggi giusto perché siamo a ridosso di Halloween. Che fra l’altro non festeggio proprio per niente. Ma le zucche sono simpatiche e noi ci eravamo incontrate proprio la notte delle streghe…dunque ferri alla mano mamme e bambine perché ho pronto per voi lo schema, che è gratuito e che potete trovare qui, sia in italiano che in inglese, come sempre.

So, I’m gonna do it today just because we are close to Halloween. Which I don’t celebrate, actually. Storia di un libro ormai nato

Poco più di un anno fa, in balia di un raptus folle, acquistavo online un biglietto aereo per Trieste, dove a fine mese mi avrebbero atteso tre donne che da quel momento in poi si sarebbero trasformate da amiche virtuali in Amiche.

More or less a year ago, caught by an insane raptus, I was buying online a ticket to Trieste, where at the end of the same month, three women would have waited for me, three women who since then would have become no more virtual friends but Friends.

Nell’attesa dell’incontro mi preparavo knittando un nastro rosa, perché l’argomento principale delle nostre conversazioni in quel periodo era il nuovo fantastico progetto che cercavamo di intraprendere insieme. Seduta sul mio divano non avrei immaginato che a distanza di un anno quel nastro sarebbe stato sulla quarta di pagina di un libro che oggi è diventato realtà.

Waiting for our meeting I was trying to get ready knitting a pink ribbon, because our main talking point at that time was a new fantastic project we were trying to start. Sitting on my sofa, I could never guess that a year later that ribbon would be on the back cover of a book which today has become reality.

A casa della Tibi, fra biscottini e tè, spaccio di patterns e “ooohhhh!!!” di stupore alla vista reciproca dei nostri lavori a maglia (e non solo), Tzugumi si apprestava a maneggiare con superba maestria la fotocamera di Ciami, per immortalare suddetto nastro.

At Tibi’s, among cookies and tea, patterns trafficking and “ooohhhh!!!” wonder exclamations in front of our knitted (and not only) crafts, Tzugumi was getting ready to handle Ciami’s camera pretty well to immortalize that ribbon.

Oggi il ricordo di quella particolare giornata mi provoca un brivido lungo la schiena, perché finalmente è arrivato l’atteso giorno, quello che sembrava lontano e che non riuscivamo a fissare lo scorso inverno perché ancora tante, troppe, sembravano le cose da fare, i progetti da testare, i patterns da editare, le testers da sollecitare, i prototipi da ricevere….

Today the memory of that day gives me a shiver down my spine, because finally The Day is here, the day that seemed so far, so unachievable and that last winter we weren’t able to set because many things still needed to be done, too many projects to test, too many patterns to edit, too many testers to urge, too many prototypes to receive….

Invece eccolo qui.
Nostro figlio.
Ma non solo di noi quattro. Questo qui è il figlio di tantissime persone. Di semplici donne improvvisate designer straordinarie. Di fotografi eccelsi. Di fornitori di filati stupendi. Ok, non voglio addentrarmi neanch’io nella lista dei ringraziamenti perché sarebbe lunghissima.
Ma qualcuno lo voglio ringraziare. Le mie ragazze speciali.
E tutti voi che numerosi acquisterete il libro.

Nessuno osi dire “alla buon’ora con questo set!”. Potrei ucciderlo.
In realtà era già pronto da un po’ ma lillyfotografa non lo era…

Io la trovo meravigliosa, non perché l’ho fatta io ma perché lo schema è splendido.

I find it wonderful, not because I knitted it but because the pattern is beautiful.

Come è noto ai più, io sono onestamente negata con l’uncinetto. Quindi mi serviva un altro bordo, che ho trovato qui. Secondo me è più bello dell’originale, ovvio anche questo lo dico non perché l’ho scelto io.

As almost everybody knows, I’m so bad at crocheting. So I needed another trim, which I found here. In my opinion it’s prettier than the original trim, obviously I also say this not because I chose it.

Per la bambina (che è ormai nata ma noi non lo diciamo a nessuno) ho preparato anche questa cuffietta. Non è adorabile? fa tanto figlia di Jane Austen.

For the newborn (yes, she was born but don’t say it around) I knitted this bonnet too. Isn’t it loving? perfect for Jane Austen’s daughter.

A differenza del pattern ho deciso di usare il metodo dell’i-cord per fare i laccetti.

Differently from the pattern, I decided to use i-cord method to make the strings.

Per finire le scarpette. Queste sono proprio da mangiare a morsi. Così piccole, così deliziose.

Then booties. I might eat them….bite them. So little, so cute.

Presto il set volerà a Milano. Speriamo che mamma e figlia gradiscano il regalo :)

…noi qui si sta dando la vita ad un progetto unico di cui un anno fa non stavamo neanche parlando.

Chi di voi ha messo da parte i propri lavori di lana pelosa mestamente ancora sui ferri causa caldo umidiccio appiccicaticcio?

Io devo dirlo, sto soffrendo maledettamente per una consegna in pura lana pelosa obbligatoria per quest’estate. O perdo il “cliente” facendo una figura becera o perdo le mani. ma si sa che alla fine perderò le mani..

Is there anybody who has sadly left aside her fluffy wool projects on their needles due to this damp sticky weather?

I am terribly suffering for an order I have to finish within the summer in pure fluffy wool. I can either lose my “customer” with my poor show or I can lose my hands. I think I’ll lose my hands.

Intanto mi lascio deliziare da nuove tentazioni…i miei due amori insieme come potevano non attirare la mia attenzione? pane e gomitoli…mmm…

Meanwhile I’m giving myself to new temptations…how could my two loves together have no consequences to me? bread and yarn…mmm…

come avete detto? posso far parte della press area di questo fantastico nuovo sito che si chiama Gomitoli’s e che vende filati fantasticamente morbidi come si intuisce già da queste allettanti foto? quando si tratta di sostenere chi si lancia in questo settore io mi sento sempre chiamata in causa…ed ecco qual è stato il mio graditissimo premio: questo allegro cappellino in spring cashmere, così soffice e sorprendentemente fresco per le serate d’estate!
Io mi ci fionderò presto su questi filati, sia per incentivare l’iniziativa italiana sia per avere ancora nuovo stash da accatastare :)

Innanzitutto rassicuro tutti sul mio stato di salute: sono viva, latito ma sto bene!

Quello che ci si aspetterebbe dopo un mese è un post pieno di foto di progetti e mille realizzazioni e invece no, ho fatto di tutto ma non ho fotografato quasi nulla :(

What you might expect would be a post full of pics about projects and crafts of any kind but it’s not that case, I’ve done almost anything but haven’t taken hardly any picture :(
….I said hardly…I said hardly!

Ho ad esempio deciso di darmi alla pittura…ma per iniziare non potevo dipingere qualcosa di normale, dovevo trovare qualcosa di più stimolante, con almeno un doppio uso, che mi convincesse poi a riprendere i pennelli…
Vernice effetto lavagna, eccoti qui per farmi imbrattare di tutto un po’…per esempio i barattoli su cui scrivere il tipo di conserva che ospiteranno…

For instance, I decided to give myself to painting for a while…and I needed something different to start with, of course, not to get bored as I often can get. I needed something to be used twice, so that I could miss paintbrushes asap…
Blackboard paint was the answer…I’ve smeared any kind of surface…for example jars on which someone can write what conserve or jam are in it.

Mi sono lasciata trasportare dalla primavera nell’illusione che l’estate qui in Sicilia arrivasse presto, ma quest’anno non ne vuole ancora sapere definitivamente e così ho ingannato l’attesa con delle rose di stoffa…

I gave myself to spring under the illusion that the summer in Sicily would come soon, but this year it plays hard to get here, so while waiting I passed the time making fabric roses…

Ci ho anche riprovato con le paste sintetiche come si può notare dalle farfalle appollaiate alla lavagna a forma di cuore…

I’ve tried working synthetic clay again as you can see from the two perching butterflies on the heart-shaped blackboard…

E ovviamente ho knittato come una forsennata!
Sappiate che il mio Rosamund è in dirittura d’arrivo ma bisognerà aspettare il prossimo autunno per vederne le foto perché sia mai che mi metta pura lana vergine a giugno, visto e considerato che per riuscire a fare degli scatti decenti dovrei tenere su il cardigan per mezz’ora…volete per caso la mia morte per liquefazione?
Dunque signore, accontentatevi di questo work in progress, parte di un set per una bambina che nascerà a fine estate.

Have I knitted so far? Of course I have!!! Frenzied knitter I am :)
You gotta know my Rosamund is almost over…but. But you have to wait for next autumn to have a look at it beacause I can’t wear pure new wool in June, since I should put my cardigan on for at least half an hour to take decent photos…would you want me to die melted?
So ladies, be satisfied with this work in progress, it’s part of a set for a child to be born at the end of this summer.

Finalmente ho completato con successo il test del Celtic Plait Shrug di Tzugumi per unitecontroilcancro!

Finally I have finished Tzugumi’s Celtic Plait Shrug testing for unitecontroilcancro!

La designer dimostra un’ottima propensione alle spiegazioni di intrecci complessi :)
La mia personale variante ha riguardato due elementi: maniche lunghe al posto delle originarie fino al gomito e poi, per via della mia schiena mooooolto stretta e del filato usato, ho dovuto riadattare la parte posteriore col geniale accorgimento dei ferri accorciati che permettono di modellare i capi in modo davvero impeccabile e qualche diminuzione centrale:

My personal modifications concerned two elements: long sleeves instead of original elbow-length ones. Poche parole perché voglio lasciare tutto lo spazio al mio primo bijoux ufficiale!!! Ne sono molto orgogliosa perché con tutte le idee inflazionate ed emulate nel campo dei gioielli in rete sembrava assai difficile non venirne contagiata. E invece, mesi fa vedendo delle perline realizzate dalla bravissima Sara, trovandomi in pieno inverno, ho preso del feltro e del filo di cotone et voilà, ho creato le mie prime personalissime perline:

I am very proud of it because it seemed quite hard not to be infected by all the copied/similar bijoux ideas around the web. Some months ago, I saw some wonderful beads realized by Sara instead, and since it was winter, I used felt and cotton thread et voilà, I created my first customized beads:

E finalmente qualche tempo fa hanno trovato la giusta collocazione in una semplice collana. I gancetti sono realizzati a mano e mostrano qualche imperfezione, ma tutto sommato sono felice anche per quelli!

Finally, some weeks ago I’ve found the right place for them in a simple necklace. Loops are handmade and even if they might not be perfect, I’m hapoy with them too!

Stamattina ho fatto casualmente entrambe le cose: ho editato le foto per questo post e ho letto alcune e-mail in arretrato da cui ho estratto questa verità. Non è una novità, ovvio, ma vederlo scritto così nero su bianco fa prendere maggiore coscienza della cosa forse.

I took this picture before reading this message. This morning I did both: I edited my photos for this post and read some past e-mails where I’ve found this truth. It is nothing new, obviously, but having read it on paper let us realize the situation better, maybe.

This snow-white scarf is for all simple and natural women, like my lovely friend’s mother, whom I had had a nice e-mail exchange with yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon I spent a lovely time among coffee and homemade cookies at home with another girl with a simple heart. This scarf is hers.

Mixing wood and metal is very nice to me…I love this sink and all plates and glasses over there (can you see the coffee maker too?great!)

E cosa ne dite delle sedie? e delle calamite dove attaccare non solo coltelli ma anche forbici e altro? e avete visto cosa pende dal soffitto??? :)

Come forse qualcuno sa già, dove vedo trecce trovo rifugio, quindi appena ho visto questo pattern doveva essere mio!

As someone may know, where I see cables I find shelter, so as soon as I looked at this pattern I knew it would have been mine!

Devo però dire che sono rimasta un po’ insoddisfatta delle spiegazioni, cosa che trovo inaccettabile per uno schema a pagamento. Non c’è attenzione nel numero delle righe da fare fra una treccia e un’altra (ho riarrangiato io i calcoli), non viene spiegato bene come mettere in attesa le maglie per il pollice, e non viene spiegato che modifiche apportare per realizzare il secondo guanto! Credo che una knitter alle prime armi non dovrebbe cimentarsi in questo progetto perché potrebbe fare dei banali errori. In realtà, ragionandoci un po’, è bastato seguire lo schema del primo risistemando i punti a specchio in modo da far venire l’incrocio e il buco per il pollice dalla parte opposta. Diciamo che è il principio che mi fa irritare un po’ ;)

Ciononostante, sono dei guanti molto carini per cui vale la pena sforzarsi un po’!!!

I have to say, I’ve been rather unsatisfied with the pattern instructions, and I find it unacceptable for a pattern for sale. They didn’t pay attention to the number of rows you have to knit before each cable, they don’t explain how to hold stitches to work the thumb in a proper way, and they don’t speak about the second mitt at all! I think I would not advise a knitter without experience to knit this project because she/he might make some stupid mistakes. Actually, I followed the pattern for the first glove trying to set stitches according to the design as they were looking at each other in front of a mirror (as regards both cables and thumb).
It wasn’t hard, it’s a matter of principle ;)

However, they are so cute so it’s been well worthwhile!!!

E questo? lo avete riconosciuto? Ah no? beh, allora vi toccherà aspettare di vederlo finito perché per punizione non vi dirò di che si tratta fino ad allora!!!

E’ stato stancante e duro, tante ore di lavoro, ma l’aroma dei chicchi di caffè mi rigenerava :)

It was hard and tiring, lots of working hours, but coffee beans’ aroma was always a great support :)

L’altro giorno ho comprato una caffettiera in offerta della Bialetti, non mi piace fare pubblicità ma devo dire che per chi ama il caffè con la crema come me è un vero affare…ha un sistema con cui fare proprio questa cremina e il gusto è ottimo. Ve la consiglio: si chiama Moka Crém (ma se leggono questo post mi pagano?!?)

A couple of days ago I bought a coffee pot by Bialetti, I don’t like sponsoring in my blog but, I have to say, for those who love espresso coffee with “crema” (this is the right noun!) as I do it’s a bargain…it has a tool to make this crema and tastes very good. It’s the Moke Crèm (I wonder…if they read this post they might pay me?!?)

Winter Queen…free pattern!

Purtroppo il pattern dell’ormai noto scaldacollo “riso e trecce”, per sopravvenute complicazioni burocratiche, con mio grande rammarico non potrà essere messo in vendita per l’iniziativa che tutti conoscete. Mi riservo, sotto suggerimento della mia amica Ciami, di metterlo a disposizione free per tutte le Lqa già da oggi.
Il test è stato effettuato dalla mia cara amica Tzugumi - un nome, una garanzia - e fotografato con una modella d’eccezione, Tibisay.

Unfortunately, my known “seed and cables” cowl, to my great regret can’t be put for sale in aid of the initiative you aready know, for unpredictable bureaucratic complications. I have chosen, following my friend Ciami’s advice, to give it for free for any knitter from today onwards.
