DES MOINES, Iowa - Jesus Christ and his apostles made the cut. So did John Wayne, Elvis and Tiger. But Michael Jackson will not have his buttery likeness displayed at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines this summer, after support for a creamy statue of the King of Pop melted in an online vote.
Kent Lehs, a manager with the Midwest Dairy Association, which sponsors the display, said Friday it wasn't a question of Jackson's achievements that drew complaints.
"They were more pointed toward what they felt they understand Michael Jackson's reputation was and not as a singer and dancer, but more some of the things he was implicated on in his personal life," said Lehs.
Jackson was accused of molesting a child in 1993 and settled the case without a trial, and he was acquitted of child molestation charges in a separate case in 2003.
Butter sculptures have been popular part of the fair since 1911, and fairgoers jostle for position in front of the glass-enclosed displays to watch the artists at work. Besides a life-size Butter Cow, which always makes an appearance, sculptors usually whip up another display.
Past works have included statues of Elvis Presley and Tiger Woods, Harry Potter, a Harley Davidson motorcycle and even a slippery rendition of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper." And this year's display will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landing.
Fair staff first announced plans for a Jackson sculpture days after his June 25 death. After being deluged with complaints, the staff clarified that the Jackson statue would be of him moonwalking, in keeping with the theme.
But the complaints kept coming, so organizers decided to put the issue to an online vote.
"They were not going to go to the fair or they were considering not going to the fair or to the (agriculture) building," Lehs said.
Fair spokeswoman Lori Chappell said more than 100,000 votes were cast and by a 65 percent to 35 percent margin, people rejected the Jackson sculpture. Voters were asked to include a ZIP code, and 97 percent of those submitted were from Iowa, she said.
"They've certainly shown a lot of passion for the fair over the past few weeks," Chappell said.
Sarah Pratt, the 155-year-old fair's fourth butter sculptor, is expected to begin her work later this month to be ready by the fair's Aug. 13 opening.

Herbal Medications For Asthma

Asthma is a respiratory disease of the bronchial tubes or airways. Its symptoms are feeling of tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Breathlessness is caused by the narrowing of the bronchioles (small air passages in the lungs). An asthma attack can be triggered by an allergen to which a patient is abnormally sensitive.These include airborne pollen, mold, and dust. Attacks can also be triggered by physical exercise, emotional stress, cold air, inhalation of cigarrette smoke, noxious fumes from gasolines and paints. It can also be triggered by viral infection in the respiratory tract.

There is no known permanent cure for asthma. Attacks can be prevented by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, such as cromolyn sodium and corticosteroids. Drugs that relax and widen the air passages such as albuterol and epinephrine can provide fast relief.

There are other temporary cure for asthma: water treatment, breathing exercises, and some herbal medications. Water treatment includes fomentation on the chest twice a day, and steam inhalation, also done twice a day. Breathing exercises for 10 to 15 minutes 4 times a day, and must be done only when there is no attack.

Sit relax on a chair. Support the back with a pillow. Breathe in through the nose. Purse the lips and pretend you are blowing through a straw. Blow twice as long as you breathe in, and gradually increase the time of blowing. Relax after blowing. Take 3 to 4 normal breaths before starting the pursed breathing again. Do this exercise upon waking up in the morning, and before retiring in the evening.

The following herbal medications can also be used to relieve an asthma attack:

Roll 2 dried leaves of thorn apple or talumpunay, and use as cigarette stick every 6 hours.
Roll 2 dried leaves of graveyard tree or kalatsutsi, and use as a cigarette stick one in the morning, and one in the evening.
Chop and boil one-foot long bark of tamarind tree in 3 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Adults must drink 1 cup every after meal, and at bedtime. Dosage for children is 2 teaspoons every after meal and at bedtime.
Boil 5 chopped young stems with flowers and leaves of amaranth or kulitis in 5 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Dosage for adults is 1 cup, 4 times a day; and for children, 1/2 cup, 4 times a day. This treatment is good for excessive mucus discharge.

Debbie Purdy: "It gives me my life back, it means I don't have to make a decision"
A woman with multiple sclerosis has made legal history by winning her battle to have the law on assisted suicide clarified.

Debbie Purdy wanted to know if her husband would be prosecuted if he helped her end her life in Switzerland.

Five Law Lords ruled the Director of Public Prosecutions must specify when a person might face prosecution.

Ms Purdy, 46, from Bradford, said she was "ecstatic" at the ruling and she had been given her life back.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said he would publish an interim policy on when prosecutions could occur by September before putting the issue out to public consultation. Permanent policy will be published next spring.

Ms Purdy said the Law Lords' decision was "a huge step towards a more compassionate law".

"I'm ecstatic - I feel like I've been given a reprieve.

"I want to live my life to the full but I don't want to suffer unnecessarily at the end of my life.

No one has been prosecuted for assisting someone's death, although the law says they could potentially face 14 years in prison.

The House of Lords, the highest court in the land, said the law was not as clear and precise as it should be.

Five Law Lords unanimously backed Ms Purdy's call for a policy statement from the Director of Public Prosecutions on when someone might face prosecution for helping a loved one end their life abroad.

Ms Purdy said she would like to see the policy distinguish between "what is acceptable and what isn't" so people in situations like hers could make decisions about what to do.

A spokesman from the Ministry of Justice said any change in the law was up to parliament.

"In a free vote on the issue on 7 July, the House of Lords rejected an attempt to decriminalise assisted suicide in circumstances where terminally ill people are helped to travel to countries where assisting dying is lawful," he said.

Human rights

The Law Lords also said she had the right to choose how she died, under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

In a summary of their decision, the Law Lords said: "Everyone has the right to respect for their private life and the way that Ms Purdy determines to spend the closing moments of her life is part of the act of living.

"Ms Purdy wishes to avoid an undignified and distressing end to her life. She is entitled to ask that this too must be respected."

She had previously lost challenges in the High Court and Court of Appeal. The Lords ruling was her last chance of success in the UK legal system.

Ms Purdy, married to Cuban violinist Omar Puente, was diagnosed with primary progressive MS in March 1995. She can no longer walk and is gradually losing strength in her upper body.

She has suggested that at some point she may travel to Switzerland to take a lethal dose of barbiturates prescribed by doctors at the controversial Dignitas organisation.

More than 100 UK citizens have so far ended their lives at Dignitas, and no-one who has accompanied them has ever been prosecuted on their return to the UK.

However, the reasons why legal action has not been taken have never been made clear.

How to cope when bad things happen all at once

It always seems this way doesn't it? Something bad happens and you struggle to cope. But no sooner than you are attempting to deal with the first event when another crisis hits. There can be this domino effect of one crisis causing another and before you know it you feel shell shocked. How can one cope when multiple bad things happen within the same time frame?

This has happened to me many times and I am sure many of you can relate to this experience as well. I think for many of us, we have this biological predisposition towards depression. And then we get hit by multiple stressors and "BAM!" we find ourselves drowning in emotional despair.

I have personally experienced much trauma and hardship in my life. My most recent challenge was being told that I have a lifelong disease called Multiple Sclerosis. Of course this did not happen at a convenient time. Does it ever? I received my diagnosis pretty much at the same time that my youngest son who has autism was entering a very turbulent adolescent stage. Around this same time I was also asked to come in for a repeat mammogram. They had seen something on the first scans and they needed to repeat the procedure.

I remember feeling emotionally numb as though I were sleepwalking. One day I was fine and the next I wake up to find I had an incurable disease and possibly another medical problem to boot. During this time my son's behaviors seemed to spiral out of control. He was having trouble sleeping through the night; he began to have urinary accidents, and would cry with anger and frustration at the slightest provocation. He would also burst into hyperactive energy which caused him to run and me to run after him. Sometimes I felt more like his bodyguard than his mother.

The thoughts came flooding into my head of "How am I going to do this?" How was it possible that I could cope with autism, Multiple Sclerosis, and also the threat of yet another disease?

There came this moment of clarity for me when I was sitting on my couch and just staring at the living room wall. The light from the window blinds was penetrating through and casting long shadows on the white wall. Time seemed to slow down and me with it. I watched as the shadows changed almost imperceptibly. As the wind would move the leaves outside the window the light would dance and flicker. It was a nothing moment in that nothing extraordinary was happening. But within that moment I can tell you that I changed. I felt calmness and a resolve. The light would always be there. Long after I am gone that light will shine through someone else's window. If I could survive this moment then I could survive others. In between all the crises is the awe of a single moment of clarity.

Sometimes we are pared down to our bare essentials. We become this condensed version of ourselves in order to survive. I believe that is how I coped with this crazy time in my life. I conserved my strength for when I truly needed it and I began to focus on what was most important. One philosophy which has always helped me comes from what is known as the serenity prayer. And if you are not religious, it doesn't matter. In my opinion the serenity prayer is a guide towards wisdom. If you are not familiar with it, it goes like this: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." Get rid of a Zit (PIMPLE) overnight

When you're trying to get rid of zit, my recommendation is that you do not pop them. The reason is, the pus that is typical for zits can spread during popping causing the infection to spread or worsen.

Ingredients mentioned in this treatment to get rid of zit are active yeast and tea tree oil. Active yeast is recommended for oily skin types because it does a great job absorbing the grease and grease or extra oil is what clogs the pores and causes the formation of zits in the first place.
Tea tree oil is often used to get rid of zit and also to treat acne. Tea tree oil is a powerful antiseptic that cleanses the skin thoroughly and reduces an ongoing infection.

Overnight Acne Treatment to Get Rid of Huge Zits

Have you ever touched your skin and felt a zit forming beneath the surface? Or, have you ever felt a huge pimple growing on your skin getting full of pus, but you "knew" that you could not squeeze it?

Well there is an overnight remedy that will help you draw out that pus-filled pimple. Here goes:

Ingredients:

Essential tea tree oil (Essential eucalyptus oil will work as well)

Active yeast

Surgical tape and a cotton square or a large bandage

Note: Perform this treatment at night time or just before you go to sleep.

Step 1:

Cleanse your skin with a mild soap.

Step 2:

Saturate the cotton square or the cotton part of the bandage with the essential oil.

Step 3:

Pour a one-half a teaspoon of active yeast over the center of the cotton square. Tap down the yeast pellets to help them cling to the essential oil but do not mix the oil and yeast together.

That's because you want the oil and yeast to mix overnight to create a reaction that makes the pus "rise" out of your skin.

Step 4:

Now place the oil and yeast bandage or cotton square directly over your pimple. Use the tape to secure the oil and yeast to your skin.

Step 5:

Leave the bandage on over night. In the morning your pimple should be completely free of pus and gone.

Tips:

Obviously, this method is not ideal for getting a case of acne under control. This method is best for one or two isolated but HUGE ZITS. Though the technique is cumbersome, it does work. Just make sure that your bandage completely closes the oil and yeast over your pimple.

*The larger or more pus-filled your pimple is, the larger your bandage should be. Overnight, pus will seep out of your skin and into the cotton square. Make sure you have enough cotton to absorb the evacuating pus.Source: The Web

For more severe conditions, we recommended 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water 3x a day. We now think that less vinegar, more water is an optimal way of taking apple cider vinegar daily unless you are treating an acute condition like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, or sore throat (in which case the stronger concoction of 2 TBS ACV to 8 OZ of water 3x a day recipe is suggested).

For daily maintenance, weight loss and pH balancing, we now suggest the following:

2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar
16 ounces of water
Sip, don't chug!

We suggest 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 16 ounces of water that you'll sip throughout the day, rather than drinking the whole concoction at once 3 times a day. You will be keeping your pH in a constant, alkalized state by sipping this highly diluted dosage. Usually 1-2 tall glasses of the concoction are all you'll need each day.

If you drink a lot of water throughout the day, consider adding just a splash of apple cider vinegar to your glass/container each time you fill it up, rather than drinking the one, 16 oz glass of acv and water mentioned above.

WASHINGTON - Put swine flu in a room with other strains of influenza and it doesn't mix into a new superbug - it takes over, researchers reported Tuesday.
University of Maryland researchers deliberately co-infected ferrets to examine one of the worst fears about the new swine flu. But fortunately, the flu didn't mutate. The researchers carefully swabbed the ferrets' nasal cavities and found no evidence of gene-swapping.
The animals who caught both kinds of flu, however, had worse symptoms. And they easily spread the new swine flu, what scientists formally call the 2009 H1N1 virus, to their uninfected ferret neighbors - but didn't spread regular winter flu strains nearly as easily.
In other words, it's no surprise that swine flu has become the world's dominant strain of influenza. It's not under evolutionary pressure right now to mix and mutate while it has a clear biological advantage over other kinds of flu, concluded the Maryland team led by virologist Daniel Perez.
The Maryland study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, reinforces concern about how easily swine flu may sweep through the country.
"The results suggest that 2009 H1N1 influenza may out-compete seasonal flu virus strains and may be more communicable as well," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "These new data, while preliminary, underscore the need for vaccinating against both seasonal influenza and the 2009 H1N1 influenza this fall and winter."
Seasonal flu vaccine is available around the country now, and swine flu vaccine is expected to arrive in mid-October.
The U.S. has closely watched how swine flu rapidly dominated the Southern Hemisphere's winter, as authorities here prepare a fall resurgence. In Australia alone, eight of every 10 people who tested positive for influenza had the new pandemic strain. While it seems no more deadly than seasonal flu, it claims different victims: Seasonal flu kills mostly people over 65. The new swine flu spreads most easily in children and young adults, and so far has killed mostly people in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

Large thighs 'may protect heart'

Men and women with thighs over 60cm (23.6in) in circumference have a lower risk of heart disease and early death, a study of 3,000 people suggests.
The relationship remains even when body fat, smoking and blood cholesterol are taken into account, a Danish team says.
Those with narrow thighs may not have enough muscle mass to deal with insulin properly, raising the risk of diabetes and, in turn, heart disease, they say.
Experts cautioned that the research needed corroborating.
Some said it was too early to change current advice on eating and exercise for heart health, but the researchers said thigh size could be used as a marker for at-risk patients.
The study, published in the British Medical Journal, followed men and women in Denmark for more than 10 years.
They were measured for height, weight and thigh, hip and waist circumference and their overall percentage of body fat was calculated.

The thigh measurement was taken just below the gluteal fold, which is the crease caused by your buttocks.
Researchers also looked at the activity levels of the participants, whether they smoked, their blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
They then monitored incidence of heart disease over 10 years and death rates over 12-and-a-half years.
'Crude measure'
During this time, 257 men and 155 women died, 263 men and 140 women developed cardiovascular disease and 103 men and 34 women suffered from heart disease.
The team at the Copenhagen University Hospital found that those with the smallest thighs - below 55cm - had twice the risk of early death or serious health problems.
Professor Berit Heitmann, who led the research, said: "The increased risk was independent of abdominal and general obesity and lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure.
"Additionally we found that the risk was more highly related to thigh circumference than to waist circumference.

Previous studies have suggested that a waist circumference of over 35in (88.9cm) for a woman and 40in (101.6cm) for a man indicated a high risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.
Professor Heitmann's team says the risk of narrow thighs could be associated with too little muscle mass.
They say this can lead to the body not responding to insulin properly, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes and, in the long-run, heart disease.
Too little fat can also lead to adverse changes in the way the body breaks down food.
'Great news'
British Heart Foundation senior cardiac nurse Judy O'Sullivan said: "There is insufficient evidence to confirm that a low thigh circumference affects a person's risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
"However, low muscle mass is associated with low levels of physical activity which is an established risk factor for developing heart disease."
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, agreed that the research needed further corroboration, saying: "This is a very interesting and slightly counter-intuitive piece of work but it has to be respected because of the numbers looked at and the duration of the research.
"This must be great news for people with larger thighs. What I find fascinating is that researchers are now going back to the drawing board and looking for every possible way of mitigating obesity." Is caused by damage or irritation to the vertebrae of the neck and top thoracics. Find someone who can alleviate these and it will disappear as if by magic. The top thoracics are the most difficult to adjust because they are usually calcified and resistant to movement. Deep massage or a decalcification treatment would help also.

I am a medical student and we were taught about this in our diseases class. My teahcher said that if you begin to get the symptoms of carple tunnel or just some wrist pain, try to watch how you sleep. If you sleep with your wrists tucked in towards you or bent in any way, this could also cause carple tunnel. this is easily corrected if you pay attention to how you position your wrists. try to keep them straight, not bent in anyway, even if bent is more comfortable. this reduces the strain on your wrist and will help you to avoid carple tunnel. try to keep your wrist straight most of the time, do not let them be bent for long periods, like the waitress did by carrying trays on her hand with her one hand. this is not only the pressure from her wrist being bend too long repeatedly, but the wait of all the food and stuff on her trays.Hope this helps!

An Injury that almost destroyed my life...

I had/have carpal tunnel syndrom. This first began in my left hand and progressed to my left elbow (giving me tennis elbow), left shoulder and later my right hand and elbow. I only thought it could come from over using a computer...I was wrong. At the age of 19 I began feeling a tingling sensation in my hand...I've been a waitress for a long time....I wore some wrist supports. That helped for about a year. Then my job became unbearable. Later on thru the year, I began avoiding my job. Pain had strickened me. Because this had came from my working , I had to follow procedure for worker's comp. Constant visits to my doctor, cortizone shots, wrist splits and weeks of occupational therapy helped very little. The problem even worsened due to me being unable to use my left hand and elbow. My right hand was my only way of getting around. I needed help with putting on bras, clothes, washing up, eating, cutting and opening my medication. The medication Naproxen or Naprosyn felt like it was killing me. It did more damage to my stomach than relieve pain in my arms and hands. DON'T EVER TAKE THAT STUFF! It's okay in Alieve. That wasn't the best idea the doctor gave me either. I couldn't work anymore. I went 4mths without pay. I begged other people for money for survival. My job had no mercy or gave any compensation. Over $4000 later, My final solution came when I began taking One-A-Day for women and drinking vitamin water. Vitamin's B6 and B12 saved me and gave me some strength back. Also, my sister brought me a memory foam pillow that aided my shoulder pain when I slept. Maybe therapy will help now...I can finally lift 10lbs again!!! Because I'm a college student, I have low income, those months of decreased pay, doctor bills and no pay left me with a lot of debt...I'm still working to pay that off. Now at 21, prayer is all I can do...and notify everyone that being a waitress can be a dangerous occupation. Till this day...I've received nothing but pain and debt. My feelings are hurt because I was on that job for 3 yrs and 7mths before I quit. A year of being a hostess @ $7/hr wasn't getting me by. Have a massage therapist work on you. The muscles that are impinging on the median nerve can be worked on & tension released in that area. Unless there are special circumstances, surgery is not the best answer. Ask your doctor will you have full strength in that wrist & will the pain go away & stay away after surgery. Their answers will probably be no. There are other routes to take. Make sure your doctor is telling you about them. I know of many people who have had massage therapy instead of surgery & are much better or don't have it anymore...all without surgery

I have carpal tunnel syndrome for almost fifteen years. Never had surgery but everytime I had chiropractic treatment for neck and spine problem my hands heald. I stopped having treatment and do whatever light work I can do. My symptoms have advanced to the point where my fingers, especially thumb gets dislocated and cause severe pain to the point where I have to scream. It can happen to any of the thumb, index and middle finger. I also have tendonitis so I have problem with all the fingers. Also due to the the nerve compression in the C7 I have pain in my shoulders. I feel as if my both arms are too heavy for my shoulders to carry. I am not obesed. I weigh 100lbs. I am writing this so those who have a severe form of CTS will know what can happen to them after many years. I don't think there is any cure but just by giving hands a rest and do sedentary work, if there is any. I paint at my own pace and surf on the internet.

I was operated on. This happened before I was diagnosed the calcific bursitis, of which I told you about . But my hands never went back to what they used to be, that is the complete feeling on the tips of my fingers has not returned completely. I go to chiropractice regularly and I found every time my back is straightened out and the "knots" on, around and under my shoulder blades are dealt with, my hands get back to normal. The median nerve on the arm may also hurt as if you had a bad bruise. When it is massaged on the spot it hurts the most, in the direction it runs there may be a feeling of something getting unstuck, then the hand gets back to normal. GAINESVILLE, Florida - No one expects a zombie apocalypse. But the University of Florida is making sure officials are ready for a night of the living dead, just in case.

The school has a plan for responding to the undead on its Web site among outlines for dealing with hurricanes and pandemics.

The exercise lays out how university officials would respond to attacks by "flesh-eating, apparently life impaired individuals." It notes that a zombie outbreak might include "documentation of lots of strange moaning."
A University of Florida spokesman says the exercise was written by an employee at the school's academic technology office to "add a little bit of levity" to disaster preparation discussions.

Sixty-one-year-old Jack Holsinger and 44-year-old Connie Spitznagel were both made up as pale-faced vampires for their scare-emoney Saturday night at a haunted house near Cleveland. The two chose the location because it's operated by the same people who own a campground where the couple met.

Holsinger arrived in a coffin inside a hearse, and the coffin was carried to the altar by six pallbearers. Minister Greg Kopp was dressed as Jason in the "Friday the 13th" movies. After the vows were exchanged, he ordered Holsinger not to kiss his new bride but instead to bite her on the neck.

DETROIT - Viagra and pornography are not staples on the government's food stamp list. But authorities say a Detroit liquor store supplied them during a series of illegal deals.
Federal prosecutors filed fraud charges this week against three people who worked at Jefferson's Liquor Palace.
The alleged scheme worked this way: Food stamp recipients would get cash from the store in exchange for swiping larger amounts off their electronic cards. The store would then be reimbursed by the U.S. Agriculture Department.
And in some transactions, the government says the store provided informants Viagra, liquor and porn in exchange for swiping about $2,000 off food stamp cards.
The government says fraud at the store topped $130,000 over 2 1/2 years. The store is closed.

WHO prepares H1N1 vaccines for developing countries

GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organisation has launched a programme to give H1N1 flu vaccines to nearly 100 developing countries, with the first ones receiving the shots soon, its vaccine expert said on Friday.

Marie-Paule Kieny, head of vaccine research at the U.N. health body, said a group of 16 countries was being contacted and should shortly receive enough vaccines to inoculate up to 2 percent of the population.
The countries were recommended to vaccinate health care workers first, she told a news conference.

Eventually the WHO would supply 95 developing countries with a view to immunising over 10 percent of their population against pandemic H1N1, widely known as swine flu.

WHO has received donations of 156 million doses of vaccine from four manufacturers or governments, and hoped to reach the 200 million dose level needed to help 95 countries, she said.
Donor governments are also helping with syringes, needles, other equipment and finance.
The WHO declared H1N1 an unstoppable pandemic in June and it has since spread around the world, with 25 manufacturers making vaccines to different formulations.
WHO experts say the vaccines, of which one shot suffices, are safe.
Teenagers and young adults are most likely to catch swine flu, in contrast to the seasonal flu viruses where the elderly are most at risk.
Most people escape with mild symptoms, but some groups such as pregnant women or people with previous health conditions such as diabetes can suffer severe illness or die from the virus.

Symptoms of seasonal flu could be severe in this group of women, study finds.
(HealthDay News) -- Pregnant women who are depressed may suffer severe symptoms if they catch seasonal flu, a new study suggests.
Ohio State University researchers assessed depressive symptoms and took blood samples from 22 pregnant women before they received a seasonal flu shot. Those with significant symptoms of depression had a stronger inflammatory response to the flu shot than the other women.

This finding suggests that a depressed pregnant woman's immune system doesn't function normally, which means they may experience more serious symptoms if they're infected with seasonal flu.
"Inflammatory responses to vaccination do no harm, are mild, and typically go away within a few days. But an extended inflammatory response to vaccination, such as the one seen in women with the most depressive symptoms, isn't expected, and it serves as a way to estimate how somebody might respond to an actual infection or illness," lead author Lisa Christian, an assistant professor of psychiatry, said in a university news release.
The researchers said their study shows the need for pregnant women to get seasonal flu shots. The study was published online in advance of publication in the November print issue of the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

The Ten Riskiest Foods

WASHINGTON—Leafy greens, eggs, and tuna are on the top of a list of the 10 riskiest foods regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Those and seven other foods account for nearly 40 percent of all foodborne outbreaks linked to FDA-regulated food. That's no reason to forgo the occasional salad Niçoise, says the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which authored the report, nor need one pass up tomatoes, sprouts, and berries, even though those foods are also on the list. But the nonprofit watchdog group says the presence of so many healthy foods on such a list is exactly why the United States Senate should follow the House and pass legislation that reforms our fossilized food safety laws.
The FDA is responsible for regulating produce, seafood, egg and dairy products, as well as typical packaged foods such as cookie dough and peanut butter—nearly 80 percent of the food supply. More than 1,500 separate, definable outbreaks were associated with the top 10 riskiest FDA-regulated foods, causing nearly 50,000 reported illnesses. Since most foodborne illnesses are never reported, these outbreaks are only the tip of a large, hulking iceberg.

"Outbreaks give the best evidence of where and when the food safety system is failing to protect the public," said CSPI staff attorney Sarah Klein, the lead author of the report. "It is clearly time for FDA's reliance on industry self-regulation to come to an end. The absence of safety plans or frequent inspections unfortunately means that some of our favorite and most healthful foods also top the list of the most risky."

CSPI identified 363 outbreaks linked to iceberg lettuce, romaine, spinach, and other leafy greens, variously contaminated with E. coli, Norovirus, or Salmonella, and causing 13,568 cases of illness. Manure, contaminated irrigation water, or poor handling practices are all possible culprits in those outbreaks. The FDA does not currently require farms and processors to have written food safety plans, nor does it provide specific safety standards for even the largest growers to meet.

Eggs were linked 352 outbreaks and 11,163 illnesses; tuna to 268 outbreaks and 2,341 cases of illness, and oysters—despite their limited consumption—to 132 outbreaks causing 3,409 illnesses. Outbreaks involving potatoes don’t seem to make headlines, but nevertheless they are linked to 108 outbreaks and 3,659 cases of illness. Cheese, ice cream, tomatoes, sprouts, and berries round out the top 10 list. The data come from CSPI's Outbreak Alert! Database, which includes outbreaks from 1990 to 2006, using data collected from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other sources.

In July, the House of Representatives passed the Food Safety Enhancement Act with broad, bipartisan support. That measure would give FDA authority to require food processors to design and implement food safety plans, provide specific safety standards that growers would have to meet, and require FDA to visit high-risk facilities every 12 months or less, and most other facilities every 3-4 years. In the Senate, similar legislation, sponsored by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), is pending.

"As consumers, we don't have the power to check on these products," said Kathleen Chrismer, whose 9-year-old daughter Rylee Gustafson was hospitalized for a month after becoming seriously ill from eating spinach salad contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. "Without a better system to protect us, we are totally at the mercy of the next outbreak."

Latinos Are Most Stressed!

I was shocked to read a new survey just out by The American Psychological Association stating that the most stressed out population in the nation are Latinos.

Marisa Treviño of “Hispanic Trending” wrote a very informative article about the new study in which she states:

“The American Psychological Association (APA) released their annual Stress in America survey and the findings are not good for Latino adults

Of all adults, Latinos are recorded as experiencing the highest levels of stress. Fifty percent of Latino adults reported to survey finders that stress has increased in their lives versus last year when only 44% reported having stress — the national average is 42%.

And just what are Latinos stressing out about more than blacks and Anglos?
