Moving the world to pandemic phase 4 would be the signal for serious containment actions to be taken on the national and international level. Given that these actions would have major implications for the global economy, not to mention the effects of the public fear that would ensue, there is concern that the WHO may be considering politics along with science. "What the WHO did makes no sense," says Osterholm. "In a potential pandemic, you need to have the WHO be beyond question, and (April 25) was not a good day for them."
Of course, declaring a pandemic isn't a decision that should be taken lightly. For the WHO, phase 4 might trigger an attempt to keep the virus from spreading by instituting strict quarantines and blanketing infected areas with antivirals. But we appear to have missed the opportunity to contain the disease at its source since the virus is already crossing borders with ease. "We cannot stop this at the border," said Anne Schuchat, the CDC's interim director for science and public health. "We don't think that we can quench this in Mexico if it's in many communities now."
That would leave the WHO and individual countries to fall back on damage control, using antivirals and old-fashioned infection control - like closing schools, limiting public gatherings and even restricting travel - to slow the spread of the virus. But such efforts would likely inflict serious damage on an already faltering global economy - and the truth is, we don't know how well those methods will work. How Scared should We Be: Outside of Mexico, the swine flu hasn't looked too serious yet - unlike during the SARS outbreaks of 2003, when an entirely new virus with no obvious treatment took the world by surprise. In the U.S., the normal flu season is winding down, which should make it easier for public-health officials to pick out swine flu cases from run-of-the-mill respiratory disease. And there are simple things that people can do to protect themselves, like practicing better hygiene (wash hands frequently and cover mouth and nose when sneezing) and staying away from public places or traveling if they feel sick. I published this article because I thought it might be of interest to those who do take alot of old folks remedies and other kitchen cure and native remedies well folks I myself can say the Old Folks Remedies I do publish on lilyruths this and that have been tried by people who tried them and they worked for them. I know for a fact I have tried several of these Old Folks Remedies myself and they have worked for me. Eating a vulture won't clear a bad case of syphilis nor will a drink made of rotting snakes treat leprosy, but these and other bogus medical treatments spread precisely because they don't work. That's the counterintuitive finding of a mathematical model of medical quackery.
Ineffective treatments don't cure an illness, so sufferers demonstrate them to more people than those who recovery quickly after taking real medicines.
"The assumption is that when people pick up treatments to try, they're basically observing other people," says Mark Tanaka, a mathematical biologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, who led the study. "People don't necessarily know that what somebody is trying is going to work."
The World Health Organization is demanding better proof that folk medicines work before they can be approved. And the Malaysian government has rejected more than a third of the 25,000 applications to register traditional medicines it has received because the treatments are ineffective or dangerous.
Despite these efforts, quack medicine persists around the world. Some Nigerians treat malaria with witchcraft, a South African health minister recently claimed that garlic and beetroot treat HIV, and western health stores brim with unproven treatments for almost any disease imaginable. For instance St John's wort does nothing for attention deficit hyperactive disorder in children, a recent placebo-controlled trial concluded.
Contagious treatments
To understand why these quack medical treatments persist in the face of better proven remedies, Tanaka applied mathematical models used to measure evolutionary fitness to medical treatments.
His model accounted for factors including the rate of conversion to a treatment, the effectiveness of a treatment, the rate at which people abandon a treatment, the odds of recovering naturally, and the chances of dying. The model starts with a single person demonstrating a treatment – rubbish or not – and measures how many people are influenced to go on to give the treatment a try.
Under a wide range of conditions, quack treatments garnered more converts than proven hypothetical medicines that offer quicker recovery, Tanaka found. "The very fact that they don't work mean that people that use them stay sick longer" and demonstrate a treatment to more people, he says.
Bad treatments don't always win out. Recurring diseases are more likely to promote effective treatments than rare diseases because repeated demonstration weeds out bad treatments, Tanaka found.
'Just ask'
But is this model valid in cultures where evidence-based medicine predominates, and government groups such as the US Food and Drug Administration vet most medical treatments?
Tanaka thinks so, pointing to the popularity of alternative medicines and the debate over the effectiveness of FDA-approved drugs. "In many situations people will just observe and copy anyway, regardless what the official information is," he says.
And in some cases, one peer-reviewed study may conclude that a drug works, while another shows it doesn't. "Even where there is a bit of clinical research, we don't really know yet whether at lot of medicines are effective," he says.
"I think it's an interesting idea. It's quite clever", James Holland Jones, a biological anthropologist at Stanford University in California, says of the model. However, language allows people to vet unproven remedies without trying them, he adds – that is, you can just ask if a treatment was effective. "You don't necessarily have to copy everything. Cinco de Mayo Biggest Celebration cancelled in Mexico due to Swine Flu

MEXICO CITY - Mexico emerged from its swine flu isolation Tuesday as thousands of newspaper vendors, salesmen hawking trinkets and even panhandlers dropped their protective masks and joined the familiar din of traffic horns and blaring music on the streets of the capital.
There were still signs, however, of the virus that set off world health alarms. A Texas woman who lived near a popular border crossing was confirmed as the second outside Mexico and the first U.S. resident to die after contracting the virus. Mexico's Health Department later announced three more confirmed deaths, raising the country's total to 29.
Across Mexico, people were eagerly anticipating this week's reopening of businesses, restaurants, schools and parks, after a claustrophobic five-day furlough.
"We have a lot of confidence nothing is going to happen," said Irineo Moreno Gonzales, 54, a security guard who Tuesday limited takeout customers to four at a time at a usually crowded downtown Starbucks. "Mexicans have the same spirit we've always had. We're ready to move forward."
The Texas woman, the second confirmed person to die with swine flu in the U.S., lived not far from the Mexico border and had chronic medical conditions, as did the Mexico City toddler who died of swine flu last week during a visit to Houston, Texas, health officials said.
The 33-year-old woman was pregnant and delivered a healthy baby while hospitalized, said Leonel Lopez, Cameron County epidemiologist. She was a teacher in the Mercedes Independent School District, which announced it would close its schools until May 11.
Mexico's government imposed the shutdown to curb the flu's spread, especially in this metropolis of 20 million where the outbreak sickened the most people. Capital residents overwhelmingly complied, and officials cautiously hailed the drastic experiment as a success.
But by Tuesday, pedestrians - many wearing protective masks, many not - were back to dodging the familiar green-and-white VW taxis cruising for fares and noisy heavy trucks bearing bottled water.
Some officials worried about a sudden rush toward normalcy.
"The scientists are saying that we really need to evaluate more," said Dr. Ethel Palacios, the deputy director of the swine flu monitoring effort here. "In terms of how the virus is going to behave, we are keeping every possibility in mind. ... We can't make a prediction of what's going to happen."
Palacios acknowledged the enormous responsibilities that come with balancing the public's health and economic welfare.
"One of most the important things is that you need to know that these measures do have an impact not only on health but also on other aspect of life and society," Palacios said.
With 942 people sickened in Mexico at last count, public celebrations of Cinco de Mayo were banned, and politicians' homage to the soldiers who fought off the French 147 years ago were subdued.
For the first time in decades, Mexico canceled the popular re-enactment of its May 5, 1862, victory over invading French troops in the central state of Puebla. Another traditionally boisterous Cinco de Mayo party in Mexico City's central plaza, the Zocalo, will wait for another year, as will military ceremonies across the nation.
Cinco de Mayo celebrations generally attract bigger crowds in the U.S., where many Mexican-Americans gather to embrace their heritage. These crowds prompted concerns Tuesday about spreading the virus.
Denver's annual festival, which typically draws 400,000, will be held as planned this weekend, with hand sanitation stations installed at the urging of city health officials. Los Angeles won't skip its weekend celebration on historic Olvera Street. But in Chicago, the Mexican Civic Society of Illinois canceled its annual festivities because of flu concerns.
Swine flu has now sickened more than 1,700 people in 21 countries, including more than 600 in the United States. The World Health Organization said it was shipping 2.4 million treatments of antiflu drugs to 72 countries "most in need," and France sent 100,000 doses of antiflu drugs worth $1.7 million to Mexico.
Mexican Finance Secretary Agustin Carstens unveiled plans Tuesday to stimulate key industries and fight foreign bans on Mexican pork products. He said persuading tourists to come back will be a top priority.
Carstens said the outbreak cost Mexico's economy at least $2.2 billion, and he announced a $1.3 billion stimulus package, mostly for tourism and small businesses, the sectors hardest hit by the epidemic. Mexico will temporarily reduce taxes for airlines and cruise ships and cut health insurance payments for small businesses.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he will ask governments to reverse trade and travel restrictions lacking a clear scientific basis.
About 20 Chinese businessmen and students, each wearing surgical masks, left Tijuana zon Tuesday on a Chinese government flight after being stranded when China canceled all direct flights to Mexico.
Mexico, meanwhile, was collecting more than 70 Mexican nationals quarantined in China with its own charter flight.
Four U.S. citizens were quarantined in China, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing said Tuesday, and about 200 passengers who flew from the United Kingdom were under quarantine in a Brunei hospital after three of them arrived with fevers.
Mexico City recovered a bit of its ebullient self Tuesday, one day before the official reopening of stores, restaurants and factories. Only essential services like gas stations and supermarkets have been allowed to operate since April 27, and the weekend's professional soccer games will again be staged in empty stadiums.
High schools and universities were being scrubbed down to reopen Thursday. Younger children return to school on Monday.
Many people shunned their surgical masks Tuesday; a boy selling music CDs on a subway train planted a wet kiss on the unprotected cheek of a girl hawking tiny flashlights. A fruit salad vendor dished up slabs of freshly cut mango and coconut without mask and gloves.
The government is requiring businesses to keep a distance of 2 meters (yards) between customers to prevent the disease from spreading. The rule seemed unlikely to survive in the overcrowded capital.
"It's a little senseless, that people ride into town all jammed together on the subway, and the minute they enter a restaurant, they have to be 2 meters apart," said Nahum Navarette, manager of Yug, a vegetarian restaurant that was still serving only takeout on Tuesday.... .................................... Swine Flu-Health officials worry what will happen this fall when traditional flu season begins

The number of cases is expected to rise as the new flu spreads across the country. But the hope and expectation is that, aided by the warm summer weather that flu bugs don't like, the rate of spread will slow.
That may only be the lull before the storm, Besser warned. What worries health officials is what will happen this fall when traditional flu season begins.
"We don't know what the fall will bring," Besser said. "What has been seen with previous outbreaks is flu goes away in the summer. But during the winter flu spreads better, so the virus could go away and come back."
Besser urged Americans to take advantage of this breathing room. True, H1N1 swine flu could just go away for a number of reasons. On the other hand, it could just as easily become more severe as it picks up elements from seasonal flu bugs.
"This period of time before the fall is critically important for community preparedness should this virus come back in a severe form," Besser said.
There's a lot that governments, communities, and businesses can do. But Besser strongly urged individuals to prepare at the family level. He stressed hand washing, staying home when sick, and covering coughs. He also pointed families to the CDC's pandemic flu web site.
That web site advises families to make preparations for a flu pandemic:
• Store a two-week supply of water and food. During a pandemic, if you cannot get to a store, or if stores are out of supplies, it will be important for you to have extra supplies on hand. This can be useful in other types of emergencies, such as power outages and disasters.
• Periodically check your regular prescription drugs to ensure a continuous supply in your home.
• Have any nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins. Selling Body Parts is lucrative business until you get caught

LOS ANGELES - A man was convicted Thursday of carving up cadavers donated to UCLA's medical school and selling the parts to unsuspecting medical research companies in a $1.5 million scheme.

Jurors found Ernest Nelson, 51, guilty of eight counts, including grand theft and tax evasion. Prosecutors said Nelson could face a maximum of 12 years in prison and they want him to repay $1.5 million to UCLA.

Nelson "was willing to go into a willed body program and cut up body parts for his own personal financial gain," prosecutor Marisa Zarate said after the verdict.

Defense attorney Sean McDonald said he was disappointed by the verdict and left court without further comment.

Prosecutors said Nelson and Henry Reid, the former director of UCLA's Willed Body Program, devised the scam in 1999.

Nelson, who ran a business transporting body parts to hospitals and medical research firms, has said he thought the sales were authorized by the university.

Prosecutors said he bought the donated torsos, cut them up and kept them frozen in a rented warehouse until they were sold to companies that didn't know they had been improperly obtained.

Nelson, of Rancho Cucamonga, used cashier's checks to pay Reid a total of $43,000 in 1999, Zarate said. Other payments were made in cash and weren't documented, she said.

The plan unraveled after a state health investigator became concerned about a sale in 2003 and contacted UCLA.

Reid has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit grand theft and was sentenced to more than four years in prison.

The scandal led to the suspension of UCLA's cadaver program for a year in 2004 and forced the University of California system to examine its donation rules.

The school said it instituted procedures to prevent future abuses, including tracking systems for the bodies. Roxanne Moster, a spokeswoman for the medical school, said in a statement that the school was "confident that these measures will ensure that our donors' generosity will be used only to advance scientific research and our students' education."

One juror said lax supervision of the UCLA program contributed to the problem.

"If UCLA had better supervision of its program something like this wouldn't have happened," said the 48-year-old man who asked that his name be withheld to protect his job as a paralegal.

The jury also found there was a pattern of fraud and embezzlement totaling more than $500,000 - a special enhancement allegation that will be considered during sentencing on June 12.

Founded in 1950, the UCLA cadaver program received about 175 donated bodies a year before it was suspended. It was the second time in less than a decade that scandal swept the cadaver program.

In 1996, relatives of body donors alleged the program had illegally disposed of thousands of donated bodies, including dumping some remains in landfills.

When it comes to old tales such as this-did it happen?Maybe it did; maybe it didn't. But one thing's for Certain! There are many different people in this world, that are capable of many different things;God planned it that way. Lets not forget that the bible's full of people that performed many great deeds called miracles;but were they miracles,or just perceived to be so?There was a time in history when people were hanged or burned at the stake for performing certain deeds; as in the Salem witch trials. And what about the deeds of Christ? Many thought him to be a demon or sorcerer,for which, contributed to his crucifixion.The fear of such people still exists in our so called modern day world. Many people are still strong believers in spell casting and have their ways to prevent it. One way is to rube a string in sulfur,tie a certain number of knots in the string and wear it around the waist for a certain number of days and no one can cast a spell upon you. A spell can be broken by the same means. I heard this from an old Afro American man, and I promised not to print all the details concerning this. The Energizing Forces of Anger

Life sometimes reaches a point when cynicism, resentment and anger set in. When life reaches that point you become jaded and bursts of anger gets displayed at every opportunity.
Such display of anger turns people away because they think of anger as a destructive and disruptive force. But anger can actually purify you, let you live a healthy lifestyle… if you do not succumb or be enslaved by it.
Here’s what Kris had to say…
“So when I was told I had a tumor in growing in my brain, denial was my first reaction. Anger was my second. I have never felt so damn angry before!
My anger churned, boiled and curdled inside me. Lashing out and berating others during fits of anger became second nature to me. I have never been so tactless or this indiscriminate before. People who knew of my illness, particularly those who truly cared about me, tried their best to understand and let my anger boil over. And boiled over it did. That was when I started to come to terms with my condition.
Anger now took on a more positive vibe for me. It motivated me to come to grips with the reality that I am sick and that I have to find as much information about my illness for me to understand it better. This metamorphosis came to me in 5 ways.
I made the conscious decision to move out of denial
When anger no longer enrages you, you should let it motivate you to accept that something serious is taking place inside you. There can no longer be any denial that your medical condition exists.
I stopped asking “What if”
Asking the “what if” questions is a guaranteed waste of time. Would repeatedly asking, “What if I had been diagnosed sooner?” change anything? How about, “What if I was misdiagnosed?” will that make the tumor disappear? It won’t. So instead of asking, “What if…?” I started to ask “What more?”… What more is out there about this condition?
Energy from anger is now released positively
Instead of lashing out at people who have really done no wrong to me, I now channel the energy I get from being angry at finding more and more information about my condition. I made seeking answers and new knowledge from doctors and health professionals my new way of life. Urgency is the only other emotion that stops depression from creeping in.
I re-learned how to laugh
Yes, there is nothing funny about having a growing tumor in your brain, but will sulking or crying your eyes out about it make any difference?
Positive anger will provide you with a better perspective. Instead of asking why it had to be me (and why not?), I find myself asking, “How long have I had this on my brain and I never noticed? All this time that I had been laughing, walking, watching baseball while having this thing in my head?”
I convinced myself that I will find the answer
When I started looking for answers and information about my condition I found them because I never relented. Positive anger motivated and provided me with the energy and the drive to find the answers that I needed.
Anger has energized my life and the way I look at my condition. It now inspires all that I do as I take on this journey to make the most of my life.”

Keep your feet dry, change your socks often and apply foot care powder a few times a day. Make sure your shoes are comfortable so they don't cramp your toes and cause sweating. Buy good quality sock, cotton ones are the best as the cotton allows the skin to "breathe" better. Wash your feet and dry them thoroughly after that.
If this routine still doesn't provide a barrier for the fungus, you might want to try a few simple athlete foot home remedies that take only a couple of minutes to make, but kill the fungus and stop it from spreading.
Athlete foot home remedies and treatment
There are numerous ingredients you can use for athlete foot home remedy. Before applying any of them, wash your feet well.Here are a few:
Tea Tree Oil

Vinegar

Apply it by either soaking cotton pads in it and then on the skin, or by soaking your skin in water to which you have added 2 cups of it.
AlcoholA highly potent disinfectant, it can be used in a combination with vinegar or solely. Dip cotton balls in alcohol and apply the same way you would vinegar.
To mix it with some vinegar, add a 1/2 cup of it and then 1 cup of vinegar to water,
Salt
Add 1 cup of salt to water and soak the feet.
Warning!
Once the infection has progressed and blisters have appeared, do not try this athlete foot remedy. It will cause even more burning than you blister have already.
Hair dryer
Use it every time you wash your feet. The dryer the feet, the better the chances are fungi will stop spreading.
Bleach
Mix 1 gallon of water with 1 tablespoon of household bleach. Dip the cotton ball in it and apply it 2-3 times a day.
Aspirin

Old Folktales have always been a part of all cultures. Where ever
there's been human life, there's always been a tale to tell.
As a child growing up in the back woods of Virginia I recall
hearing my relatives speak of spell casting, root doctors, palm
reading, black cats and such,but I was too busy playing doctor
under the front porch to take it all in. Speaking of cats! Have you
heard the old tale that if a black cat crosses your path you will
have bad luck? Or if you walk in another persons foot-prints you
will develop a head ache? How about the most well known one; If
you break a mirror you will have seven years bad luck? Some
may view this form of thinking as none sense. But is it? What
some people considers to be none-sense is very real to others. The
belief in things such as witchcraft,black magic,vampires,voodoo
and the like,has been around for centuries. And will be-as long as
mankind walks the earth. Some older people believes that if a
pregnant woman is frighten by an animal before her child is born,
the child will be born resembling the animal that frightened her;
they call it "marking". My father,being of African and Indian
heritage, has told me some very strange tales of people he met
while growing up on the old plantations of Virginia. My favorite
being of a man called Buck Jackson;a tall slim narrow faced black
man. As my father tells it, Buck was a great harmonica player
and had other talents as well. The story goes like this. Every
Sunday people would gather at the old church and looked
forward to hearing Buck play the harmonica. Buck would start
playing the harmonica,remove it from his mouth,lay it on the
hood of his old car, and the harmonica would continue to play,
while Buck clapped his hands and said,"play it boy!" It was also
said that whenever Buck was locked up by the local police he had
to be closely watched,for Buck appeared to be a black Houdini,
(an escape artist). Buck also had a strange appetite for things like
burning cigarettes,coins,and glass lamp chimneys. The glass
chimneys must have been a delicacy for Buck. Because It was said
he would bite the chimney off piece by piece until it was all
consumed. After which,Buck would give his chest a hard pound
and the glass would come flying from his mouth.

Daily sex 'best for good sperm'

Daily ejaculation may be the best way to improve sperm quality
Having sex every day improves sperm quality and could boost the chances of getting pregnant, research suggests.
In a study of men with fertility problems, daily ejaculation for a week cut the amount of DNA damage seen in sperm samples.
Speaking at a fertility conference, the Australian researcher said general advice for couples had been to have sex every two or three days.
Early results from the trial had already shown promising results.
Perhaps we have been blaming the women as couples get older but perhaps there's a contribution from the male because we're not behaving as we should be

But 118 men have now been tested and the benefits for sperm have become clearer.
Dr David Greening, from Sydney IVF, told delegates at the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology meeting that eight in ten men taking part showed a 12% drop in sperm DNA damage after the seven days.
Although there was a big drop in sperm numbers from 180 million to 70 million over the week, men were still within the normal "fertile" range.
Sperm also became more active over the seven days with a small rise in motility, he added.
Damage
The theory is the longer sperm hang around in the testes the more likely they are to accumulate DNA damage and the warm environment could also make them more sluggish after a while.
Sperm come under attack by free radicals - small reactive molecules which can damage DNA and cause cell death - in the tube that stores and carries sperm away from the testes.
Further work is needed to work out if daily sex for men without fertility problems has the same benefits but Dr Greening believes it is likely to be the case.
He warns that having daily sex for too long - say a fortnight - would probably cut sperm numbers too much.
But recommended "lots of sex daily" around the time the woman is ovulating.
He said it was best to "keep the river flowing".
As men age they may not have as much sex as they did when they were younger, adding to the problem of infertility, Dr Greening told delegates.
"We are designed to breed in our youth.
"Perhaps we have been blaming the women as couples get older but perhaps there's a contribution from the male because we're not behaving as we should be."
The findings may also have implications for couples undergoing IVF as men are commonly told to abstain from sex for a couple of days to try and boost sperm numbers.
Dr Alan Pacey, a fertility expert at the University of Sheffield, said the finding that daily ejaculation improved the chances of conception was interesting, but it would be wrong to apply the results to all men.
"For example, in cases where men have low sperm counts to start with, daily ejaculations may well reduce the sperm count still further and whilst sperm may be more healthy the reduced numbers could impede the chance of natural conception.

Heart Attack or Heart Failure

NEW ORLEANS - A new medical study paints a grim picture for heart-related health care in Louisiana when it comes to heart attack or heart failure.
The study examined data on heart attack and heart failure patients from about 600,000 hospitals nationwide.
Local cardiologist Dr. Robert Matheney said the study takes into account every step of care.
"From the time they leave their address to the time they get a balloon or stint procedure, to the time they discharge and whether or not they are re-admitted in the next 30 days," he said.
"Our facility, resources, how well we educate the patient, the doctor's response time, how well they're treated in the emergency room as well as monitored on the floor, all of that plays part," said Dr. Matheney, president of the Greater Southeast Affiliate Board of Directors for the American Heart Association and Chief of Staff at Ochsner Hospital-Westbank.
The Louisiana hospitals in the study rank among the lowest in the country, with deaths in about 25 percent of patients admitted for heart attack or failure.
But Dr. Matheney said there are some weaknesses in the study unique to Louisiana and New Orleans hospitals.
"The data started in July 2005 and 2008. That was a critical time we all know, right before Katrina," he said.
In light of residents already at high risk for obesity and heart disease in Louisiana, Dr. Matheney said patient responsibility is also a factor.
"If they are not having time to exercise, rest, return for doctor appointments, if they don't have insurance, if they are stressed out, all of that plays a part," he said.
However, this study focuses on how hospitals react and treat patients, and not the prevention methods.
Dr. Matheney says the poor performance by Louisiana hospitals likely involves the resources locally, and lack of, but does not accurately represent the efforts made, or what will be done to improve treatment in the state.
"It is basically coordination. From the emergency room, our communication with physicians and the cath lab and intensive care units, once we get that coordinated we will see tremendous improvement," he said.
The study only looks at patients 65-years and older, and does not include patients enrolled in managed care, considering only patients on medicare. Source: Health News
