Bus Service 310 - Annacotty / National Technology Park

This bus service is operated by Dublin Coach, subsidised by the National Transport Authority.

TIt runs 7 days a week, every 30 minutes between 6:30am and 11:30pm.

The route is from from Sarsfield Street in the city centre to Annacotty, via University of Limerick and the National Technology Park.

It starts running on Wed 12 October 2022, and is a replacement for the cancelled routes 307 and 308.

each day. After that, bus will run every 30 minutes:

From Annacotty on the hour and at half-past until 11:30pm

The National Transport Authority have announced a new bus route in Limerick City, starting on Wednesday 12 October 2022. This is to replace routes 307 and 308 which were cancelled in July 2022.

This bus service run by run by Dublin Coach, subsidised by the National Transport Authority.

This will be a Monday-to-Sunday service, running every 30 minutes between 6:30am and 11:30pm. Buses will leave from Sarsfield Street the city entre and travel to to the IDA National Technology Park / Annacotty via Goody Road and the University of Limerick.

Standard Limerick city bus fares will apply. Cash will not be accepted: payment is by Leap card or the TFI GO app. Free travel pass will be accepted.

New service from Donegal to Limerick

Bus Feda have announced that they are now running services from Co Donegal to Limerick.

These buses use the motorway, and do no stop in Galway city.

Timetables are still to be released, but services can be booked on their website now and it looks like they are running:

Two buses on Friday from Limerick to Letterkenny (and maybe beyond)
One bus on Sunday from Letterkenny (or further) to Limerick

Journey time is approx 5 hours.

Although these buses run on days + times that will suit students, they can be used by anyone who wants to travel.

Routes 307 and 308 suspended

Dubin Coach / Big Green Bus have announced that routes 307 and 308 are suspended, effective from Saturday 9 July 2022.

They say that this is due to the services being excluded from the 20% Fares reduction scheme combined with rising fuel costs and that they hope to resume when normal market conditions are restored.

More buses to Galway+Cork, Raheen bus stop cancelled

Citylink have announced that they are offering three more buses from Limerick to each of Galway and Cork / Cork Airport each day, from Friday 8 April 2022.

This is a 7-day service. The new buses will leave from:

Galway at 10:30am, 1:30pm and 4:30pm
Cork Airport at 12:30pm, 3:30pm and 7:45pm

From the same day, Citylink buses will not stop at Raheen . The only stop in Limerick will be in Henry Street, near the Garda Station.

New daily bus between Loughrea and Limerick, via Athenry and Gort

Farrells of Athenry have announced that they will run a daily bus to Limerick from Loughrea travelling via Athenry and Gort, starting from Monday 4 October.

This is a Monday - Friday service:

Leaving Loughrea at 7am and arriving at UL at 8:45am
Leaving UL at 6pm and arriving at Loughrea at 7:45pm
With an extra UL to Loughrea service at 12-noon on Friday

Bus stops are at Loughrea shopping centre, Swan Gate - Kenny Park carpark in Athenry, Town square Gort (AIB bank), Mary Immaculate - South Circular Road, Limerick IT and University of Limerick.

Tickets are purchased on the coach. Return and weekly tickets are available. There are no separate student / adult tickets: This service is planned for students who cannot find accommodation in Limerick, but is open to anyone.

Expressway bus cancellations in Limerick, May 2021

Bus Éireann have announced cancellations to a number of Expressway services, from Saturday 15 May 2021.

Limerick services that are affected are all on Route 51 (Galway / Shannon / Limerick / Cork):

The 6:05pm, 7:05pm and 8:05pm buses from Galway are cancelled
The 7:35 pm bus from Limerick to Cork is cancelled
The 6:25pm bus from Cork is cancelled
The 5:25pm and 7:25pm buses from Limerick to Galway are cancelled.

Bus Éireann introduces separate Expressway and Non-Expressway tickets

Bus Éireann have announced changes to ticketing for Expressway coach services, from Tuesday, 23 February 2021. They say that when you buy a ticket for a journey on a route that is served by both Expressway and PSO (ie government subsidised) Bus Éireann bus services:

You must choose the type of bus (ie Expressway or non-Expressway) when you buy the ticket, and
You can only use the ticket on the type of bus that it is for.

This means that tickets for Expressway services can only be used on Expressway services, and tickets for Bus Éireann PSO services (ie everything but Expressway services), can only be used on non-Expressway routes.

This is different from the past, when Expressway coaches accepted regular Bus Éireann tickets and vice versa.

Consequences for longer journeys

If you want to travel with Bus Éireann from a place that is not served by Expressway services, to somewhere far-away that is , eg from Foynes to Cork, then you will need to buy two separate tickets. One will be for the non-Expressway part of the journey eg Foynes to Limerick, and one for the Limerick to Cork (ie Expressway) part of the trip.

This change will be phased in over four weeks, from 23-February to 23 March 2021.

However it is already (20-Feb-2021) impossible book through-journeys in one transaction on the Bus Éireann website; If you try, you get a message that "There are no direct journeys for your search." And it is very likely that you will not be able to buy tickets for through journeys on-board buses from 23-February.

If the Bus Éireann website or driver tells you that "there are no direct journeys for your trip" then you need to buy separate tickets (single or return) for each part of the trip. And because the website doesn't have a shopping-cart, you need to do a separate transaction for each part of the trip: there is no way to group tickets together and buy them all in one transaction.

Note: There are times when an Expressway coach is used to provide a non-Expressway service. Presumably in these cases, the non-Expressway rules will apply because it is a non-Expressway route.

Other changes to Expressway ticketing

A number of other changes are being make to the Expressway ticketing system, from Tuesday 23-February-2021:

Advance Seat reservations will be available on all all Expressway routes, including an option for Free Travel Scheme passengers.
There will be priority boarding for pre-booked customers: walk-up passengers will only be accepted if there is a seat available for them.
On-coach payments can be made using Contactless, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and TFI Leap Card.

Note that these features will not be available for non-Expressway services.

Bus cancellations between Limerick and Dublin Airport

CityLink have announced that their EeagleAir service between Limerick and Dublin City is suspended, from 18 January 2021.

Bus Éireann have announced that Route X12 Expressway service between Dublin and Limerick is cancelled, effective from Saturday 30 January 2021. This service provided 8 buses per day between Dublin airport and Limerick bus station, with stops in Dublin City (Busarus), Portlaoise (hospital and shopping centre), Roscrea, and University of Limerick.

Alternative ways of travelling from Limerick to Dublin include:

JJ Kavanagh's route 735 (which called Kenneally's on the Transport for Ireland Journey Planner) - departs from Arthurs' Quay, goes to Dublin Aiport, with a few more stops than the route X12.
Dublin Coach route M7 - departs from Arthurs' Quay, goes to Dublin city, with connection at Red Cow to a Portlaoise to Dublin Airport service.
Irish Rail - take the train from Glentworth station (right beside Limerick Bus Station) to Heuston Station, and use a local or airport bus to get to Dublin Airport.

Changes for bus 303 - Pineview to O'Malley Park

There will be a bus every 15mins between 7am and 8pm on Monday to Saturday, and every 30 minutes at other times.
Buses will run between 6:30am (7:30am on Sunday) and 11:30pm
Buses will go past Limerick Bus/Rail Station.

Limerick bus and train fare changes, December 2019

December 2019 public-transport fare changes for Limerick have been announced by the National Transport Authority.

This year, these changes are only for pre-paid, subsidised fares, ie monthly and annual tickets. Changes to other fares will be announced in February 2020, and apply from March 2020.

These fares apply from 1 December 2019, for the 2019 calendar year. Monthly and annual ticket prices will be applied during November for tickets that will be used from December.

The Limerick City Bus Fares page will be updated with this information shortly.

Bus Éireann city bus services

Monthly tickets

Student from €59.50 to €52, a decrease of % 12.6%

Annual tickets (including Tax-saver)

Adult: from €780 to €770, a decrease of 1.3%

Note that these monthly and annual ticket prices are for the Red Zone - it does not make a distinction between journeys longer or shorter than 7.5km.

Bus Éireann regional, commuter and "stage carriage" buses

There are no fare-changes on any of these services.

Other bus companies

Private companies providing city and regional bus services in Limerick do not receive a subsidy, so their fares are not approved by the National Transport Authority, and have not been announced .

Some may choose to increase their fares in December, and some at approximately the same time as Bus Éireann.

Iarnród Éireann / Irish Rail - train fare changes

The only train fare changes affecting Limerick are Child tickets on the Intercity services:

Child Zones A, B D, E, F, H, I and L monthly tickets increase slightly: amounts vary between 0.6% and 1.4%.
Other Child Zone monthly tickets decrease, with zones M-P decreasing by over 10%

How do Leap cards work Limerick

This FAQ explains how the Leap cards work in Limerick City.

What is the Leap card

The Leap card is Ireland's version of London's Oyster Card.

It is a "smartcard" that can be used to pay fares on the buses, trains and other services that have been set up to accept it.

And it is the same size as a credit card, so fits neatly into your purse or wallet.

How does it work

A Leap card works like a pre-pay phone:

You buy credit from a shop or on-line
The shop etc loads the credit for you
Each time you use public transport, you put the your Leap-card onto a reader, tell the driver what fare you want (*), and the cost is taken from your credit.

Leap cards can also handle other options, eg daily (24-hour), weekly (7-day) and monthly (calendar month) tickets: if one of these is put onto your card, the card-reader sees it the same way that the bus-driver checks a paper or cardboard ticket.

You can have up to five types of ticket on a card at once - although this is more relevant in Dublin than in Limerick at the the moment.

(*) In Dublin, on the Luas and Dart you must touch your card against the Leap machine at both the start and end of your journey. Also in Dublin, if you catch a Dublin bus, the don't use the Leap machine (ie validator) on the right-hand side unless you should pay the maximum far.

How to get a Leap card

Adult and Child Leapcards can be bought from any Payzone outlet that is offering Leap services. Not all Payzone shops do this - see below for a list of ones in Limerick that do.

You need to buy at least €5 credit, and the card deposit (€5 for an adult card or €3 for a child card).

If you buy TaxSaver tickets through your work, then you will eventually be issued a personal Leapcard (although this aspect has not been rolled out for Bus Éireann services yet).

If you are a student, it is not clear if the Limerick monthly student Leap tickets will be loaded onto standard Adult Leap cards, or if you have to get a student Leap card.
If you are a 3rd level student anywhere else, then you can buy a student Leapcard the Student Leapcard website or one of their agents.

Do Leap cards from Dublin work in Limerick?

Yes. Leap is a nation-wide card. There is no difference between cards sold in Dublin, Cork or Limerick A Leap card from Limerick will work in Dublin or Cork provided is has either credit or an appropriate ticket loaded onto it.

What is the bus-fare with a Leap card

Bus companies usually give a discount of about 15-25% to people who use Leap cards.

However this is only compulsory for companies that get a subsidy from the government: they have to agree their fares with the National Transport Authority, who are setting fares to encourage people to use Leap cards.

Private companies that do not get subsidies for their bus services are not required to accept Leap cards, or to give discounts to people who use them.

How to find out your Leap card balance.

Go into a Payzone Leap outlet shop, and ask for a balance check, OR

When you catch the bus, the machine shows your balance - and beeps if it is below a certain level, OR

If you have a Smartphone, there is a Leap Top- up app available, which reads the balance from your card.

In Limerick, Leap cards and travel credit are available from Payzone shops. They are not available from the Bus Éireann Travel Centre.

Details of December 2018 public-transport fare increases for Limerick have been announced by the National Transport Authority.

Full details are in the determination document, which is available here.

These fares apply from 1 December 2018, for the 2019 calendar year.

Monthly and annual ticket prices will be applied during November for tickets that will be used from December.

The Limerick City Bus Fares page will be updated with this information shortly.

Bus Éireann city bus services

Distance-based fares to become operational

Different city-bus fares for journeys longer than 7.5km were announced last year in the 2018 fare changes. To date, they have not been implemented in Limerick. But this year's fare changes document says

that will change from 1 December 2018 when the distance based fares become fully operational

No guidelines has been provided to date about which specific journeys are longer than 7.5km, but initial research from 2017 showed that:

Route 304a - from the Raheen terminal to Travelodge Castletroy is approx 7.5km

Route 304 - Stables to Sexton St via Hurlers is 7.3km, and to Roches St / Catherine St is 7.5km.

Route 304 - Raheen terminal via Church Hill Meadows to is 3.5km, and then to O'Connell Ave / Mallow St is 7.5km

These values were measured by tracing the routes on Google Maps - they are not official distances.

Fares paid with a Leap card - single journeys

Adult fare goes from €1.61 to €1.68, in increase of 4.3% for journeys up to 7.5km
Adult fare goes from €1.89 to €1.96, an increase of 3.7% for journeys over 7.5km: this is a 22% increase on journeys where the over 7.5km fare has not been applied before

School-child stays at €0.77 for all journeys.

Child fare goes from €0.91 to €0.98, an increase of 7.7% for journeys up to 7.5km
Child fare goes from €1.12 to €1.19, an increase of 6.3% for journeys over 7.5km

On average, Leap fares are 30% cheaper than cash fares.

Fares paid with cash - single journeys

Adult fare goes from €2.30 to €2.40, in increase of 4.3% for journeys up to 7.5km
Adult fare goes from €2.70 to €2.80, an increase of 3.7% for journeys over 7.5km: this is a 18% increase on journeys where the over 7.5km fare has not been applied before

School-child stays at €1.10 for all journeys

There are no annual student or child fares.

The fare-increases document says that day, weekly, monthly and annual ticket prices are for the Red Zone - it does not make a distinction between journeys longer or shorter than 7.5km.

Bus Éireann regional and commuter buses

Leap cards will be accepted on all regional buses by mid 2018, and Leap fares will be 30% less than the cash fare for the journey.

Some fares on regional bus services are changing: the amount depends on the distance travelled, and the type of ticket used.

The difference between return and day-return fares will decrease, by increasing day-return fares by 2%, and reducing return fares by 2%.

Adult single journeys up to 5km long will increase by the same amount as a city-zone short fare, ie 10c cash or 7c with a Leap card.

Short distance 10 journey fares for adults and students reducing by up to 3.7%, and some longer-distance adult, student and child 10 journey fares increasing by up to 3%.

Monthly ticket prices are to be 3.7 times the cost of a 10-journey ticket: this is an increase on some routes, and a decrease on others.

Other bus companies

The private companies providing city buses and regional bus services in Limerick do not receive any Government subsidy, so their fares are not approved by the National Transport Authority, and have not been announced as yet.

However some of them may increase their fares at approximately the same time as Bus Éireann.

Iarnród Éireann / Irish Rail - train fare changes

The 2018 fare determination includes a number of changes to train fares.

Exact train fares are a good deal more difficult to state, because they are based on journey starting point and destination as well as the return ticket. Overall on inter-city services (the only trains that serve Limerick):

Intercity express single fares for zone D(*) and longer are reduced by about 5%.

Return fares on the expressway services increase by around 1.4%

Weekly tickets will increase by between 0.8% and 1.9% with the average increase 1.4%.

Economy day return .1 and 2 fares are merging

Student single and return, express and economy fares purchased at ticket offices will increase by up to 13% - but such tickets purchsed on-line prior to travelling will no increase.

Student and child monthly tickets will increase by an average of 1.5%, while monthly adult tickets will not increase.

Bus Éireann city bus services

Fare zone change and distance-based fares

Bus Éireann's Limerick city zone has been extended. From December 2017, it covers the larger area shown in this map:

Currently, there are no Limerick city bus services operating outside of the pre-Dec-2017 zone. However it appears that the the city-zone fares will apply on buses that are running stage-carriage servics in these areas (to be confirmed).

Also, there is now a two-tier fare on all city zone buses, with a higher price applying to all journeys longer than 7.5km, no matter what route they are on.

No guidance has been published about which journeys are longer than 7.5km as yet, but some initial research shows that

Bus Éireann are making some temporary changes to some Limerick bus services, due to Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann which is being held in Ennis town from Sunday 13 August until Monday 21 August 2016.

On Saturday 19 and Sunday August

Route 51: Cork - Limerick - Galway - will not stop at Clarecastle
Route 343: Limerick - Shannon Town / Shannon Airport - Ennis:
Will travel to/from Ennis Bus Station via Dunnes Stores, and not serve the Hospital or Lifford Road areas.

As well as these changes for Limerick services, there are extra late-night buses and some diversions in and around Ennis for other County Clare services. See Bus Éireann's announcement for full details.

It is also possible that there will be some delays during the week due to extra traffic on the roads.

Update: this service is no longer running. It has been replaced by Route 310 from October 2022.

This bus service is operated by Dublin Coach.

It was previously operated by Curtin Executive Travel from Ballyneety under the “Eurobus” brand - and it is still known by this name.

It runs via William St, Upper William St, Mulgrave St, Ballysimon Rd, TipperaryRd, Groody Rd, Plassey Park Rd, Flagpoles Rd, Dromroe Village - return via Milford Rd, Dublin Rd, Groody Rd - and reverse route

Bus fares

At the time when this service was suspended fares were:

Single journey

Adult €2.00
Junior (under 16 years) €1.00
School child in uniform €1.00
Children up to 3 years - one child per adult: No charge

These fares are paid directly to the bus-driver.

Multi-trip tickets

One 10-journey ticket: €15.00
Two 10-journey tickets purchased together: €25.00

These tickets are purchased directly from the bus-driver. They do not expire, and can be used on either of Route 307 or 308.

General fare information

Department of Social Protection Free-travel passes are not accepted.
Leap cards are not accepted
Tax-Saver tickets are not available
Dublin Coach does not receive any subsidies for their services, so fares are not regulated by the National Transport Authority.
