The trees - mangroves, banyans and lipstick palms and a whole horde that I could not identify. The top one is about 3M in diameter.&nbsp;<span style="background-color: white;">These wonderful trees and plants&nbsp;</span><span style="background-color: white;">are by&nbsp;Zadok Ben-David and are currently on show at&nbsp;in Singapore Garde</span>ns. I loved the ones in the lake. Wetting the paper raises the fibres and makes it more porous, so it needs to be resized with gum sanderac to fill those little gaps. Too much gum sanderac and it's like writing on cellophane, too little and it bleeds.You could probably spray it with fixative - but don't quote me. Remember I don't really do formal lettering and I don't use it often. But I'm going to do some wild experimenting on it in the Summer for a project where we have to use HP. However its best to use<br /> the little guide to make one long strip with lines for writing and interlinear spaces. Use a T-square. I spent a whole day cutting stencils and mixing ink.<br /> I cut 9 pieces of BFK Rives to size. And then the printmkaing studio was closed due to snow as the technician couldn't get in. Yesterday however, it was open and I packed my little shopping trolley and armed with two huge bags with metal framed screens (70cm X 50cm) I drove to Oxford, parked in the freezing parking lot and walked over to the studio.<br /> <br /> Hooray, only two etchers and me so I had loads of space to spread around. I worked flat out from 11.00am till 5pm and I have now laid all the colours to go under the photographic stencil. Here is the screenprinting and the stencil which is now on a photographic screen. To stick paper onto card or to laminate two sheets of card, you need PVA glue which has lots of "grab". &nbsp;For very heavy paper, you can mix one of these glues with PVA glue.<br /> These glues all penetrate the fibres of the paper and allow it to stretch and dry super flat if the paper is being glued to card. If you use the pastes to glue paper onto paper it will cockle. The Wheat Starch is labelled in English as well!<br /> <br /> <br /> <b>Wheat Starch recipe</b><br /> 3 tablespoons (45g) of wheat starch<br /> 1 cup of cold water in an small saucepan.<br /> 1 cup of boiling water<br /> Dissolve the wheat starch in cold water in the small saucepan.<br /> Add the boiling water<br /> Stir vigorously while cooking.<br /> When transluscent, remove from heat and whisk to make it light and airy.<br /> Allow to cool, whisking periodically.<br /> If it thickens too much add a little more water.<br /> If it goes lumpy strain through tights.<br /> As it cools it thickens more, so keep watching and whisking.<br /> The final thickness should be like wall paper glue.<br /> <br /> It's impossible to write a precise recipe, practise and intuition are needed. You make it in 5g batches!<br /> 5g Methyl Cellulose powder<br /> 50 ml cold water<br /> 50 ml boiling water<br /> Sprinkle the powder into the cold water while whisking with a mini whisk, so that it is lump-free.<br /> Add the boiling water and keep whisking.<br /> <br /> This will make a thick jelly that is completely transluscent and "set". It will soak through thin paper, leaving a plasticky film on the outside. It is very useful to dilute wheat starch glue instead of using water, thus retaining the stickyness. I always make sure that I get the sort that doesn't have "fast drying additives" as I think these are less pure. The child-craft PVA is very weak. You cna but special archival PVA at Shepherds Bookbinders, but I think that PVA is fairly archival anyway because it is acrylic. They walk the furlong from East Hendred to West Hendred and there are so many beautiful seasonal vignettes, that she wanted to record them. I outlined it with Ecoline watercolour inks then painted it, controlling the bleeding by doing some quick mopping up. The first version was outlined in black waterproof ink and it seemed a bit sterile to me, so I tried brown Ecoline ink. In my trial it didn't bleed - or so I thought, until I looked at it later when it had done so rather sneakily. In other words it bleeds, but not profusely! The original had pencil lines from the guidelines and where I needed a little help on S's and B's and had drawn them letters in pencil first. Rather than erasing all those lines over delicately cut letters, I spraymounted the front of the work and glued it onto black paper.</li> <li>Of course it was back-to-front.</li> <li>I took this peice (60cm X 30cm) to Hobs Printers for them to scan and reverse it for me.</li> <li>Back at home I cut away the excess black around the verses and cleaned up the odd scruffy edge.</li> <li>I added the name of the poet, Edward Dillon-Robinson. I cut his name the same way, but this time kept it as black letters, scanned it myself and "hung" it from the last line.</li> </ul> <br /> Now I need to go back to Hobs for them to print the whole piece on acetate to make up the screen.<br /> <br /> Then I have to make up the screen, print all the colours to go under the final photoscreening and screen the letters in various shades of mauve.
