Have not posted any opinion pieces for a while, and thought it high time to give it a blast, and see what bites.

Not a Pro, by any stretch of the imagination, but after 2 –1/2 years, I’ve seen a fair bit of what happens, on the INDIE side of the music world. (Major Labels have deep pockets, so if they sneeze, they make another million.)

I still need to repeat a theme from a previous post….. MAINTAIN YOUR BRAND!
”WHAT DO YOU MEAN, brand?” I mean the entire PACKAGE of WHO YOU are as an Artist. From your Band/Artist LOGO, your BAND NAME, your musical theme, basically everything you live and breath as an Artist.

WHY? Because you are trying to build a FANBASE, and also generate Search Results on these World Wide Web search engines like Google and Yahoo. (THIS is your new metric for your identity) If you change your NAME, whether it is on Twitter, ReverbNation, Facebook, MySpace, or any other number of sites, then the search results will be confusing to those trying to follow or find you! And because a great number of these sites are indexed regularly, a search on Google will show ALL the sites you are on, as long as you have maintained your BRAND!

I know, you are sick of this so called Social Networking, but what else do you have that is FREE? You don’t have a label PUSHING your latest track to 3000 national radio stations for total listening audience of 30,000,000 at some point during the day, you have your OWN sweat and tears hitting the twitter and Facebook, looking for new fans. AND if you gain 100 followers, what percentage will BUY your music?

BUY, that’s a strange word to most folks these days, with so many ways to stream content, Spotify, Online radio stations, Mobile Phone Apps, how do you break through? Do you GIVE AWAY free music to get fans TALKING about your music? Do you BUY ads on major sites like Facebook?

For ME, if the PRODUCT is solid, the HARDCOPY is a must have. Any that know me, already know I follow a lot of artists, with a wide eclectic range of music genres, but there is some music that move you beyond just liking, to the obsession side, at which point the QUALITY makes a WORLD of difference. NOTHING beats a fully Mastered CD for dynamic range, and it brings the music to the LIVE quality. (Then we open the CD/Vinyl debate, oops!)

“What’s your point mate?” I know, dancing all over the joint here! (squirrel!) {inside joke} The point is CONNECT with your audience, connect on every Social Site you can, and build a following, then hope that 5% of the 5% that follow will actually BUY your ART! YEP, I said 5% of 5%, since that seems to be the current trend. If you are moving 1000 units per week, then don’t need to follow back on the Social networks, but if you are lucky to move 100 units per year then you need to follow all the folks you can, and hang on for the RIDE. Because this is the SOCIAL Revolution. CELEBS only follow a hand full of people but have MILLIONS of followers. INDIE ARTIST need to follow ALL that follow them, and hope that a tweet, or status update, get’s reposted and generates some extra buzz. If your NEWTORK is large enough, you never know who else is WATCHING, and may get a lucky bite from a label with the resources to take you to the next level.

This brings up the next item, do you WANT the next level? All the added stress of demands put on you, or do you want to continue to build in a DIY method, so you have total control, and no other percentage takes on your art? Only YOU can answer that question. I know for a fact, some bands continue to DO IT THEMSELVES and are reaping the rewards for themselves. AND some have left the major label in favor of the Indie way, just to have CONTROL of their product and life.

Bottom Line..... nobody has ALL the answers, but loads have made mistakes, so LEARN all you can, and keep the music flowing. IT'S A PASSION.

If you haven't heard Emmins before, you are in for a treat, if you have, but missed how much music he created in 2011, then hold on tight!

For those who don’t know, a little excerpt from his BIO on his website emmins.net:-

MARK EMMINS, Former lead vocalist with UK rockers BLACKREIGN who were highly visable in the early 90's, Is back with a solo career, and creating an impression all over the Globe.

Mark is regularly featured on Podshows and national radio which is quite an achievement for an artist that is unsigned Mark was recently nominated for 2 awards in the Exposure Music Awards held in April 2009

Mark returned to Music in 2008 with an impressive 15 Albums hitting the internet with the promise of many more to come.

" My songs are my life and I want my life documented, as Music is all I know and understand, I use it to comunicate my thoughts and my life so that I can share it with everyone" .

Mark Emmins sets GOALS, and he will push himself to the breaking point to meet those goals. First goal for 2011 was to break the 2010 donation total of £1000 as outlined in my post July 20th. Instead of a 10 hour marathon of Ink, 2011 was to tattoo his entire body. Have not heard a grand total as yet, but it should meet his goal.
His second goal for 2011 was to release SIX albums to iTunes, and he did just that!

March 13 marked the release of STAIRWAY TO DEVON

along with the Single release WE CAN MAKE IT.

May 6th marked the release of EMPIRE

August 17 saw MR PROLIFIC released to iTunes.

DEDICATION was released September 27.

November 15 saw AWAY FROM THE CIRCUS

And the final release for 2011, WOLF STAR

Arthur Dellea has been a computer geek since 1986 when he got is first computer. In the early 1990’s, he was still in high school, and used to mess around with a 4-track, a set of drums, and a Korg keyboard, coming up with his own style of techno-metal music. In the late 1990’s he used to play drums occasionally at jam sessions with buddy Jeff Turner of Dalton Sky Gazer. Arthur has been a Christian since I met and married his wife in 1999. Today, he regularly play drums at church, Sheffield Chapel. Also part of the church’s worship team, where they help with live sound and media production, as well as sermon recordings posted to their web site.

He mostly composes instrumentals, with the hope of having some of his music included in video and computer games, commercial productions, and independent movie soundtracks, etc. Some people think that some of the music sounds like Blue Man Group and similar instrumental artists, but use your own judgment. Arthur composes numerous genres of music, such as electronica, techno, dance, trance, rock, metal, alternative, industrial, rap, new age and experimental… and likes to mix genres in new and interesting ways.

from ReverbNation:- Frank Weyzig (founder of TURMOIL MUSIC) started his music career with Dutch electronic wave legend ‘Clan of Xymox’ from way back at the time they were signed with the infamous English 4AD label in the mid-eighties. Frank played guitar & keyboards on the famous debut album in 1985 and joined the band on stage as live guitarist and keyboard player until 1990. From 1995 until 1999 he played as vocalist and guitarist with Dutch indie-wave band 'Born For Bliss. Some of you may remember their first pre-released cd-single, 'Arabia' (for Nuclear Blast - Death Wish Office - 1996). This single became an addicting club hit and made its way high into the German alternative charts. In 1997 followed the release of their first full length album 'Flowing with the Flue' which also entered high into the German alternative album charts....

....and then it became anxiously silent around Frank. Somehow, together with his music, he went into a long hibernation sleep… until the beginning of 2010, when Frank surprisingly made his return into the music scene with his contribution for White Rose Transmission, the band founded by Carlo van Putten (at that time vocalist of The Convent; now the singer of Dead Guitars) and the so sadly missed Adrian Borland (front man of English 80's cult band The Sound). With Frank’s contribution for White Rose Transmission as co writer, band member and producer for their latest album ‘Spiders in the Mind Web’ (released on German label Echozone), he established himself again on the horizon of alternative music…

But that isn’t all there is. It seems as if Frank needs to make up for all that lost time while he was hibernating… So another surprise follows when Echozone decides to also release the second Born For Bliss album ‘Between Living and Dreaming’… Originally this album was recorded and mixed in 1999 but due to problems with their former label and management this album never saw the daylight. And now, after a successful album release and many good reviews, we can even announce the official rebirth of Born For Bliss… Frank, together with his long time companions; Remco Helbers and Willem van Antwerpen, is now working in his studio on new tracks for a follow up Born For Bliss album…

But first you can enjoy a re-release of the first Born For Bliss album, “Flowing with the Flue’. This will be remastered version of the 1997 album plus extra, never before, released remixes and the single version of ‘She’ (from the Arabia EP) and will be available in the fall of 2011 on the Echozone label as well…

And if that’s not enough there’s another one of Frank’s project’s that also will see the daylight; ‘StarGazing Project’. Together with Remco Helbers, Frank has written a collection of songs for which the main source of inspiration was the Internet. Inspired by the many mysteries of our time; conspiracies, alien abductions, ufo encounters and other strange events, Frank and Remco searched the internet for unusual sounds and recordings. These elements give shape to their ‘StarGazing Project’ in a very peculiar way… A digital release of their album “StarGazing’ is out now! release date: May 27 - 2011 / Label: ECHOZONE

Furthermore Frank has finished the final mixes of the new White Rose Transmission Live album 'Spinning Webs at Night'. Release date: May 06 - 2011 / Label: ECHOZONE.

And last but not least there is his latest project. A collaboration with Dutch singer Yvette Winkler, known for her work with her band Sea of Souls and her contribution to the latest album, "Here is Why", by Pieter Nooten... So yes, all things considered.... he really deserved that long sleep… better let him stay awake from now on….

Influenced by famous artists of past and present. My name is Trent Schneider and I am the singer, songwriter of Soundunion. In late 2008 I had already written a handful of songs. Over the next year I wrote several more songs gaining interest from people I have known for many years in the music industry, along the way. 2009 was the year we put together our band, Soundunion, a highly talented team of seasoned Melbourne based musicians. Soundunion is Trent Schneider on lead Vocals and Guitar, Scott Smoothy on Lead Guitar, Steve Wells on Drums and Backing vocals, Clark Fisher on Bass, Gab Clements on Vocals Peter Nolan on Keyboards& Vocals, James Courtney on trumpet. Soundunion has created their own original Australian sound. There debut album "Lay My Guns" is available through iTunes, Amazon and all good digital distributors.

Forgive me, but I'm one of those listeners that checks the first few bars in a track, and have my mind set on the rest of the track, and move on. BUT, just the first few bars on any track from Soundunion had my attention all the way through. Impecable guitar work, just enough percussion, and vocals that are well seasoned and smooth.

For only a couple of years under their belt, I hope to hear more from these guys!

CHARITY begins with MARK EMMINS

Quite literally, Rocker Mark Emmins is putting his BODY on the line for charity. SERIOUSLY! Mark has pledged to GET INKED over his entire body, with hopes generous people will donate to the cause for CANCER RESEARCH.

We are not talking little line drawings of Butterflies here, but full on large ART from an artist (Kirsty Cousin) donating her time. Mark completed a 10 hour marathon INK session in 2010, and raised £1000 for charity, but this year wanted to GO BIG, as is his way, because EMMINS ROCKS.

Starting in June Mark pledged his body to ALL OVER BODY TATTOO FOR CHARITY, and will continue to get INKED, as long as donations keep coming in.

from ReverbNation:-Originally from the UK {Yorkshire} and now residing in Melbourne, Australia, Dale Goodridge has been a musician since he was twelve years old. He has been in various rock bands over the years, had a couple of near misses and just decided one day to pursue writing and recording his own music.
He built his own studio and proceeded the mammoth task of writing, recording and producing his own music. He is a multi-instru(mentalist) and hopes that people will enjoy the fruits of his labour. From love songs to heavy rock, he hopes to be dynamic and surprising in his output.
