I tried making another iris folding pattern but this time it's a square shape. I found the template via online on google images. There's lots of free iris folding templates that we can download and try out. This particular one seem easy enough to try and I loved how it turned out. This time I used a bigger sized ribbon since the template is quite big.

I still have not yet tried using folded paper because I'm just super lazy ahahahaha. Using ribbons is faster. :D Besides, I have tons of ribbons that I can use for my iris folding experiments ehehehe!

I used the iris folding pattern to make another birthday parcel....since it's bigger than the previous parcel I've made before, I had to redraw the ribbon on top of the parcel for this one. I'm not too happy with it, perhaps next time I'll draw a much better one hehe.

I also tried using the MS doily punch that I recently bought to make the bottom decoration of the card. I love that craft punch design so much. :) Actually the envelope is soft olive green in colour......so is the colour of the green ribbon.....but because of the lighting, the colour does not really show in the photos huhu.....

Ruffled ribbons

Ribbons, ribbons and more ribbons! Combinations of ruffled ribbons and love theme pattern ribbons in one card. I love how I can make use of the ribbons I have and embellished the card with them this way. I made this card while I was on leave. Got the idea when I was watching one YouTube video of how to make the ruffled ribbons without having to sew it. It was so cool, I had to give it a try just for fun ;).

I didn't put any wordings on it yet. Haven't decided whether to put or not. I seem to like it just the way it is. Using ribbons as embellishments is probably one of the simplest ways to decorate a card. Another would be to use wrapping paper or pattern paper. I just love looking at the texture the ribbons can make by making it ruffle like that. Gives it dimension and character. :)

This is my new love. Iris folding......... :) While on leave, I decided to try out some techniques that I have been wanting to experiment on for a long time now.

Commonly, iris folding is done using folded pattern paper, but I had decided to use ribbons instead for my first try. Inspired by looking at images of iris folding handmade cards on the net and books, I just had to give it a go!

I have to admit, I do have quite a lot of ribbons available in my collection and I simply wanted to try out different craft techniques using ribbons. Iris folding is just one of the many ways I'm using to experiment with ribbons.

The parcel design above is actually a design I used from a book I bought some time ago by Michelle Powell. There are many free design templates inside her book that I can use and experiment on. The instructions in the book are pretty easy to follow and I can't wait to try out some more. Mind you, they are not "super easy" but reasonably easy enough for me to figure out and follow hehehehehe. I had to crack my head a bit in the beginning to do it but it's really worth the try and making it my own.

I made these cards for someone special......the soft pink one was given to her for her birthday, the other three are for her to give to whomever she wishes. :)

I do believe that the iris folding technique will be one of my favourite techniques to use for my handmade cards this year ;) Loving it!!

Taking a long break...

Hahahaha.....please excuse the wordings on the photo.....actually that's exactly how I feel right now......I wish I can take a break and return whenever I want......but of course that is not possible.

I've been thinking about this for the past one week now......due to my poor health condition, I've decided to take a break for about 2 weeks to get some rest from work and get my health back on track. I really, honestly need a break from work for a while. Need to recharge.

So this means that I will be on leave from today on wards till end of this month and I will resume back to work on 1st of June 2012.

Hopefully after this long break I will be feeling great once again and be able to create new things with lots of passion :).

Here it is! The birthday card that my customer ordered for her husband's birthday together with the quilled blue flower frame.

Actually if you look at it closely, this design looks familiar right?? Well, that's because it's originally a design I recreated from my old design, V042. In that design, there are only 2 love birds, but in this one, my customer requested that I put a little baby bird in the middle to represent her first born. It's so cute! I rarely make little birdies like that so it was fun to make one that small. For the branch, I decided to make a long one so that I can fit all 3 birds together on it, like one happy family :).

One thing I loved about making this card this time is the fact that it has a new kind of envelope. I saw on YouTube the other day on how to make box envelopes using the scoring board and I'm just super excited about it! hehe! How can I not be excited about it right?? It's super cool that now I can make my very own special envelopes for my quilled cards....something that fits them perfectly, no more worries about whether or not the quilling will spoil the envelope or visa versa etc etc etc....bla bla bla.....yup, no more worries about all that. Problem solved. And of course the envelopes are made using thicker paper too to protect the quilling design. ;)

But still, I prefer to give quilled handmade cards by hand instead of posting them to my loved ones. It's a lot more thrilling to watch their happy reactions when they received the cards from me. Priceless! :)

Shades of blue on black

:D another quilled flower frame of the exact same layout design as the ones I've done before but this time the flowers are in shades of BLUE!!! My favourite ;). You must be wondering why I added some shades of pink as well in this design......well, first of all, my customer was the one who suggested it.....second of all, I thought that the blues were too blue and it needed some bright colours to cheer them up! hehe! And sure enough they did! ;)

This quilled flower frame is actually for my customer's husband....it's for his birthday :). Hope he likes it. She also ordered a handmade card together with this quilled flower frame. I will blog about it soon ;)

Handmade paper boxes

What's my latest hobby?? Yes, you've guessed it! It's making handmade boxes! ;) I love making them using the Martha Stewart's scoring board. :)

Those handmade boxes that I made in the photos above are just for my own personal use. I was thinking that from now on wards, if I have something to give to my loved ones as gifts, I no longer need to wrap the gifts, if it's a small one. I can just make a handmade box to fit it in and decorate it with quilling designs or ribbons or foam shapes or anything that I can imagine on it! hehe! Besides, it's much more fun this way, it's a 2 in 1 wrapping concept. You get to pack the gift in a box and you also get to decorate it at the same time. No need for wrapping paper. Cool! ;)

I've also made customized paper boxes for my quilling starter packs. It's now a lot easier for me to pack the quilling kit and mail them to my customers. Have a look at the photo below of the boxes I made for my starter packs! I can easily fit in a slotted quilling tool, a mini circle template and 5 packs of the multicolour paper inside each box.

I can make each box in just a few minutes and it's done. It's so easy making them using the Martha Stewart's scoring board. I also love the fact that the scoring board does not have a border on both sides. The border is only on one side of the board. So this means that if I ever wanna use a large piece of paper to score, it wouldn't be a problem since it doesn't have a border on the right side of the board that would be a bother when using a larger piece of paper.

I can easily customize the size of the boxes that I wish to make with the scoring board. I can make them any size I like. Big or small or medium size....short of tall.....it all depends on the size of paper I have available. So far, I'm only using the A4 size paper to make all the boxes. And it has to be thick otherwise it won't be suitable for making boxes. At least 220gsm type of paper.

I just love it coz now I no longer have problems packing my products for delivery as I can make my own boxes, customize the size to fit the items accordingly. The scoring board is the best tool for me to have right now and how I wish I had bought it sooner. It would surely have solved a lot of my packaging problems. :)

Shredding paper demo

So happy to meet one of my quilling students today, Remy Sunbae. Finally get to give him his mini paper shredder. He is one of the people who ordered the mini paper shredder from me. Since he is currently on a holiday, he is able to meet me and pick up the shredder from me himself. Otherwise he would be extremely busy with studies....final year student, you see :).

So many have been asking me to get them this mini paper shredder for a long long time now. I've been searching high and low to get this product for them. Finally I managed to find one that is willing to sell them to me at a small quantity. So many other suppliers are not willing to do so and it's a burden for people like me to buy products such as this in large quantities. So I was really grateful to have found one that suits my needs.

Even though I don't have a lot of stock to sell for everyone but I'm happy that I managed to at least make some people happy with the limited stock that I had. I really hope to be able to help those who are in need of this product as I know how important it is to have it as a quiller. Especially for us quillers who can't afford to buy ready stock quilling paper that are so expensive. This mini paper shredder is a life saver indeed.

Me and Remy asked his brother Nuqman to take a video of me and Remy, while I do a simple demo on how to use the mini paper shredder. I was extremely nervous, I'll bet you can tell just by looking at my facial expression hehe. This is obviously my first time appearing fully on video, as before you could only see my hands in the video tutorials ahahahaha......I was speaking in Malay by the way.....sorry if some readers don't understand what I was saying. I was merely saying that I am showing how to shred the paper using the mini paper shredder. That's all that I said really.....nothing much.....coz I was too nervous to say anything else ahahahaha. I was much too shy for the camera LOL! :D. Perhaps when I have the time someday I can do a proper video on how to use the shredder. Been so busy lately, just don't have the time to do any videos huhuhuhu.....hope to do more in future! ;)

Red and pink on black

Look familiar? Ahahaha.....yes, it's the same design like the quilled flower frame I made before except that this one has a black background and it stands horizontally. I made this especially for my customer exactly like she requested it. The size of the frame is half the size of an A4 paper and can fit a 4R photo in it.

Actually both of us weren't too sure about the background colour. We were kinda afraid if the black background wouldn't look as nice as the white one if the flowers and leaves were the same colour. But luckily it turned out alright and I actually changed only one colour from the original design which is the dark green colour. I changed it to teal instead. It's a little lighter shade of green compared to the dark green....it's kinda like blueish green.

I've been pretty busy with work lately and because of that it took me quite some time to finish making this frame. I guess I just don't have much time anymore these days to create. Been spending too much of my time on selling products for quilling instead. But at least I'm making others happy by giving them a chance to create their own artwork instead of just admiring mine hehehe. Now they can create their own beautiful designs and make their loved ones happy. Love making people happy....as it makes me happy too ;)

Paper photo frames with quilled flowers

Another first for me! Yup! It's the first time for me to make my own photo frame using mounting boards :). It was not quite as easy as I thought it would be when I first started making them but it was quite ok in end. These photo frames were requested from a customer of mine. She wanted me to buy a couple of white wooden photo frames and decorate them with quilled floral arrangements. Since I couldn't find any here in Alor Setar, so she gave me an option of making the frames using mounting boards instead.

I did search for white mounting boards but the surface of the mounting board was not pretty. So I layered it with a better quality white metallic paper instead. Ting! hehe! You see, by doing this, I can always have any kind of colour on the photo frames. I also pasted a transparent plastic sheet inside the photo frame to protect the photo.:)

She gave me the freedom to decorate both frames any way I like...it's all up to my creativity, but she did requested that the flowers be in red and pink combination. So that's how it all started :). I was kinda confused at first in choosing the type of flowers that I should be making for the decorations. That's what happens when you have too many flowers to choose from haha! In the end, I decided to do the Malaysian flower and also the Cascading + husking flower :).

I made the Malaysian flower photo frame first and I think I love this one more than the other one hehehe. I love the flowers and the leaves as well. Can't help it. Love the Malaysian flower more coz the petals of the flowers looks chubby and cute haha. :D

Scoring board!

This is the new love of my life. The Martha Stewart Scoring Board! Yay! I'm totally obsessed with it currently and will forever will be happy with it because now I can make my own envelopes with much pleasure. No more feelings of tortured when making envelopes like before. I know I should have bought it sooner but as usual, money was always an issue. Yes yes yes.....another item in my wishlist taken off ;).

This scoring board can help me make envelopes, fan fold flowers, score cards, make small boxes plus anything else I can come up with using my imagination hehehe :D.

I just got this yesterday and been playing with it ever since. So much more to learn about how to use it. Luckily YouTube is always around to help. YouTube is the best online teacher I have or best craft teacher I ever had when it comes to learning about crafts really. :). It's easier to ask YouTube than asking someone to help me :) hahahaha!

I'm in a "perpetual bliss" mode ;).....lalalalalalalalalalalala.......

(First time ever for me to take a video of my pop up card!! So exciting!! hehe!)

Look familiar?? Yes, this design is actually a design I made sometime ago, made it last year to be exact. But the colour combination was different when I did the HB085 birthday card. And the pop up inside was different as well. You can view it at the link --> HERE. My customer wanted me to change the colours to a combination of pink and green so that's why you see there are a lot of pinks and greens here :). And for the pop up, she was interested in something like HB039, but I didn't do exactly like that and changed the pop up to make it more suitable for this design.

It took me such a long long long time to get this card done for her. She had to wait for so many months! She is such a nice and patient customer. So grateful for that :). I'm so happy that I finally get it done and also made some bookmarks for her too, which she requested especially for her and her bf ;). You can view the bookmarks below.....it's a design I've done before...you can view it at the link here ---> BM007 , but since I ran out of dark brown paper, I had to substitute it with black instead but still I added the metallic brown paper for the engraved name behind the bookmark. So happy that she loved what I made for her ;). I'm so happy too! hehehehe!

Alternatives for quilling comb

A lot of my readers have been asking me about the quilling comb. Many have expressed their interest in purchasing the product from me but unfortunately I no longer sell the product because I think that we can use an alternative tool to do the combing technique just by using a hair comb. It's cheaper! ;)

Below you can see the various types of hair comb that I am currently using for the combing technique. I used each of them for making different types of flowers or leaves. You can turn the hair comb into a quilling comb just by cutting off the end part of the comb using a small DIY hand saw. See below how I've changed the hair combs into quilling combs and view in the video the basics of how you can use the altered hair combs for the combing technique. Do watch till the end of the video because I'll be showing you how to make the basic husking flower at the end of it! So do be patient and watch the whole video ya! Hehe! TQ!!

I would say that this lice hair comb is my favourite! It's very easy to hold when doing the combing technique and I can do cascading loops with it and also the tiny loops petals as well with it. Love the small pins it has and the gap between the pins are really close together. But if I wish to make the loops look further apart from each other, I just skip a few pins to get bigger loops. You can only use one side of the comb. The other side has pins that are just too small and the gaps are too narrow for the quilling paper to go through. You can use this hair comb to make the cascading loop flower, the tiny loops flower and also the husking flower.

This hair comb is "ok la" for me hihihihi. Not my personal favourite but since it's bigger in size, it's quite comfortable to hold. The pins are quite big, thus producing bigger loops that sometimes are not to my liking. This hair comb is not suitable for making the tiny loops flower though. I've tested it and it didn't look that nice. But it's ok for making the cascading loops flower and husking flower :).

This white hair comb was the first hair comb I used for the combing technique. I still love using it to make the tiny loops flower. The size of the pins are just nice and I love how the flowers turn out whenever I use this hair comb. It's perfect for making cascading loops and also for the tiny loops flower. You can also use it to make the husking flower.

Well I hope everyone can benefit from this humble post. Especially those who are interested in the combing technique and do not have a quilling comb. The technique I've shown in the video are just the basics. You can use your imagination and creativity to make much more beautiful flowers or leaves on your own. 3 tone flower bookmark

A simple bookmark made for my customer.........simple and sweet ;) Focusing more on the flower itself.....rather than on other things on the bookmark. So the flower is the first thing you would look at when you look at the bookmark.

I used the quilling comb technique for the leaves and flower.....can't help but be obsessed with that technique these days :).

Quilled flower arrangements in gold, silver and white

Ok! As promised in my previous post. Here are the close up photos of the quilled flower arrangements project that I made for my students. :)

This is my first try at making a quilled flower arrangement on an A4 size board. I was actually inspired by my quilling students who loved to make their quilled flower arrangements on boards. They made it in smaller sizes and I thought it was a really nice idea to do something similar with a different twist to it. I made it using just 3 different colour strip of paper.....gold, silver and metallic pearl white paper strip. All the quilling strip used for this quilled flower arrangement were made using papers that were shredded using the mini paper shredder. I chose a thicker type of paper for this project as the paper available were a bit thicker compared to the other quilling strips I've used before.

Since the board itself was quite plain and didn't have a nice background for the quilling arrangement I had in mind, I decided to paste on it an A4 size paper that had a metallic silver sparkle to it's black background. It seemed perfect for my idea.

For this one, I made a new flower pattern for it. Not sure what to call it hihihi. I've never made something like it before on any of my card designs. It's something new I created using the quilling comb. I really like the middle part of the petal....the silver part...and I did a husking technique on both sides of the silver part then wrapped it with a metallic white quilling strip. The first time I made it when I was experimenting with the new idea, I only made the silver part as a petal by itself. Only later on that I decided to combine it with the husking technique. I love the combination of the two techniques :).

I don't know why but I've always loved to arrange flowers this way. Love seeing it slanting to one side....either to the left or to the right. For this one I made the Royal flower patterns but with the husking technique inside that has two different type of colour paper....gold mixed with silver. I just love doing this type of combination. I love the leaves I made for this flower arrangement too! I made it using the combing technique and see how the loops are so close to each other?? That's because I used a really small hair comb ;).

I hope to have the time to make more projects like this in future. Perhaps something more complicated, something more challenging. I always have difficulty trying to do that because I always end up making it look so simple. ;)
