Are you interested in expanding your market outreach and/or partnering with local farmers in Africa?

If yes, there is ‘a piece of Lincolnshire’ (103 acres) in south/western Nigeria, bought with generous donation from the people of Lincolnshire, which will afford you the opportunity to:

Showcase your produce and eco-friendly farming practice.

Access the lucrative food market in south/western Nigeria, worth an estimated £12m daily.

Gain access to influential government officials to develop agribusiness initiatives.

Partner with Shepherd Food Ministries to establish a solar powered storage and processing hub in order to reduce post-harvest loss, estimated at 70 percent, within 3 weeks of harvesting.

Shepherd Food Ministries (SFM) is a Lincoln based charity operating within the remits of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDG1 – poverty and hunger). It aims to establish a storage/processing hub and local/international market chains for the 100 farmers it is working with in south/western Nigeria. This region is peaceful and has good arable land. Nigeria is the largest market in Africa with a population of 170m.

Patron: Lord Victor ADebowale, CBE.

The Lincolnshire Show – Behind the Scenes with Chloe, the newest Marketing #Showgirl

“This year is my first Lincolnshire Show and my third month working here at the Showground. It’s been a steep learning curve, but an amazing one none the less!

One of the first things that struck me about the Lincolnshire Show was that so much work goes into creating such a massive event and did you know it’s mainly organised by a team of just 20 people?

The well oiled machine includes the Grounds Team who prepare and mark out all 200 acres, Sally, our Trade Coordinator who make sure there’s plenty to look at, buy, do and eat. Aimee, the Livestock and Equine Secretary who organisers all the horse, sheep, cow and pig competitions, Emma, the Sponsorship Manager who works with both local and national companies, Judith, the Membership Secretary who administers over 3500 Lincolnshire Agricultural Society Members in time for Show and Graham and Gail, the finance team who work hard to keep finances in check.

And then there is us (Amelia and myself)… the Marketing Team, working hard to spread the Lincolnshire Show word.

This will be my first county Show and its very hard imagining just what the two days will be like! On one of my first days George, the Showground Manager drove me round the grounds to show me how versatile the land is and to give me a rough idea of how things will look when it comes to Show time.

Apart from feeling slightly queasy having just eaten my ham sarnie for lunch (the lumps and bumps in the 4X4 didn’t do me any favours) I realised how beautiful this patch of countryside is,
which is 10 minutes away from Lincoln City Centre.

Still, trying to imagine every inch of these 200 acres covered with people, animals, stands, rides,
jumps and activities is no easy task.

I can only imagine the smell of sun cream, cut grass, fresh blooms and amazing aromas from the food court wafting by in the summer air and the warmth of the sun on your back and soft grass underfoot.

I envisage looking around and seeing so many different things to look at and take in, feeling excitement in my stomach, not knowing where to look first.

That’s just how I imagine it. But I know for a fact it will exceed my imagination.

We couldn’t believe that AS level students had produced such amazing pictures and had to be involved! The designs are made up of small illustrations of iconic landmarks and logos from Lincoln which create a larger image of famous Lincoln Icons such as the Cathedral.

The Young Enterprise team include three AS level students; Emma Webster, Alice Conway and Jasmine Harvey study a range of subjects including; Photography, Travel and tourism, Business studies and English. They all agree their experience with Young Enterprise has given them a great insight into running a business and is something they would be interested in doing in the future.

Emma has particularly enjoyed the design aspect of the project and that could be something she would be interested in pursuing in the future.

Alice hopes to set up her own photography business and with the skills and experience she has gained from Young Enterprise along with her natural flare and talent we’re sure she will have every success in doing this.

Jasmine hopes to attend university when she has completed her A levels to study Forensic Science. Her experience in setting up and running the business has really built her confidence and given her skills and opportunities that can’t be learnt from books.

The girls business ‘Unwrapped’ is sure to be a success. We wish them the best of luck with the Young Enterprise competition and want to thank them for providing the Showground with the most beautiful artwork.

Our lovely new posters will take pride of place in our meetings and conferencing rooms. We invite anyone to stop by and take a look at this inspirational work.

Chloe Middleton – the newest #Showgirl reviews February’s Comedy Curry Night, one of the Showground’s most popular evening events.

As the newest #Showgirl to join the team Comedy Curry Night was my first experience of an event at the showground, and what an event it was! The Epic Centre looked great, the atmosphere was buzzing, the food smelt amazing and the entertainment was hilarious.

We all sat down to devour our eastern banquet of vegetarian or chicken curry with rice, poppadoms, dips and Naan bread. The bar was great too with a selection of drinks on offer, including the very popular ‘bucket of beer’! Just as our table had finished eating the compere arrived and the evenings entertainment began.

I thought the whole night flowed really well with breaks to pop to the bar and get a top up between comedians. The compare was brilliant; he really got the crowd going between acts creating a great atmosphere. He interacted really well with the audience, as did all the comedians who were fresh off the stage of ‘Mock the Week’ and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The beauty of having four different comedians was the variation; there was definitely something to tickle everyone’s funny bone.

All in all the night was fab, despite my‘mascara-streaked’ face from tears of laughter. The parking was so easy and FREE, which is unheard of on a Friday night this close Lincoln’s city centre. The food was tasty and the entertainment was outstanding and all for £16 – you can’t go far wrong!

Comedy Curry Night was the perfect start to my weekend and a great introduction to the Showground team. Roll on October for the next Comedy Curry Night (I’ll definitely be taking a packet of tissues along).

<sup>
The weather in 2012 seems to have broken more records than many can remember. From droughts in America and Brazil, wild fires in Australia, ice melt in the Arctic, to floods in the UK, unseasonable cold across Asia and Hurricane Sandy’s tidal surge in New York the incidence of ongoing extreme weather events have multiplied.

Whilst none of these on their own can be directly attributed to climate change the cluster that has emerged fits closely with many scientific climate models. The worrying thing is that it is happening much faster than was predicted as recently as 2009 at the U.N.’s Copenhagen climate change conference.

What are the risk management implications for Lincolnshire as an agricultural county? Does this mean business and local communities should be reviewing how they plan for the future? Is there sufficient policy clarity and political ambition around the green economy both nationally and globally to develop a resilience strategy or should it be led from the ‘grass roots’?

Two keynote speakers of national standing, Sir Brian Hoskins, of Imperial College, a member of the government’s Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Mr Jonathan Grant of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, the author of “Too Late for Two Degrees”, will lead the debate on “Business resilience in a changing climate”.

SUSTAIN Lincolnshire 2013 Conference and exhibition

Their presentations form part of an open conference and exhibition at the EPIC Centre on Thursday 7th March. An exhibition including next generation photovoltaic systems, multi fuel biomass burners electric vehicles and charging systems and much more opens from 10.30 – 12.30 directly after the keynote speakers.

The SUSTAIN Lincolnshire 2013 EXPO is free to attend either as a visitor or as an exhibitor.

Keynote speaker

Sir Brian Hoskins, Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change, Imperial College, London

Sir Brian Hoskins became the first Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London in January 2008. He is a member of the UK Committee on Climate Change.

His international roles have included being vice-chair of the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme and involvement in the 2007 IPCC international climate change assessment. He was knighted in 2007 for his services to the environment.

Jonathan Grant, PwC Director, Sustainability & Climate Change

Jonathan delivers a key role as the head of PwC’s Sustainability & Climate Change team. His fifteen years experience has predominantly focused on climate change policy and the carbon markets having first started to work on climate change issues in 1997 during the lead up to the Kyoto Protocol negotiations. Prior to joining PwC he spent ten years in the oil industry. He is an author of the business strategy document “Too Late for two degrees?”

Never one to miss an opportunity to celebrate food, or more to the point eating it – the #Showgirls and #Showboys wholeheartedly scoffed their way through delicious choices for Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

For those of you that don’t already know “Farmhouse Breakfast Week is run on behalf of arable farmers. The campaign is to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the wealth of wonderful breakfast produce available around the country.” We all know how important breaking the overnight fast is. It’s been proven you can concentrate more, work harder and even lose weight – just by taking 10 minutes to treat your tummy to something filling.

And to demonstrate our dedication to the cause, here’s a peek into what the team devour each morning…

Yvonne, Sales Exec and busy Mum of two doesn’t usually have time for breakfast, but when she does get five minutes it has to be extra special “either a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel or brioche and chocolate spread – all washed down with a milky latte!”

Livestock and Equine Secretary and all round hungry girl Aimee normally chooses something hearty like muesli or porridge, but on the day I’d asked her it was a rather naughty “remains of last night’s Chinese!” , while Facilities Manager Paul prefers to feast at Lunch, but dreams of “The full works – eggs, sausages, bacon, beans, toast, tomatoes and mushroom.”

Gail, baker extraordinaire and Finance Assistant is fuelled by porridge, raspberries and a mug of tea from Monday to Friday and relishes a trip to the local cafe for a fry up – “every weekend without fail!”, but Sally, Trade coordinator for the @LincsShow enjoys a virtuous smoothie each weekday, then treats herself to a “big bacon sandwich” on Saturdays.

Wholesome bowls of porridge kick start Celia’s week, but a lazy breakfast of poached eggs is her weekend choice, whereas I, Amelia – Marketing #Showgirl enjoy a big bowl of muesli, dollop of Greek yoghurt and slices of banana religiously each morning – at 7am – on the dot!

Are you inspired? If so tweet @Lincsevents with your own breakfast choices – be it weetabix, smoothies or a BIG fry up we want to see just what’s fuelling the county.
