Just got back from a yoga class, and I'm feeling great. I also found time to meditate this afternoon while the boys rested. I must be doing something right if both activities are back in my life! How do you find time to practice? I'd love to hear some suggestions and tips.

I'm trying to be patient as I wait for my next fabric to arrive. Here's the link to it on Spoonflower - Double Hexagon Fabric You can actually purchase my fabrics there! So cool.

I had a blast making this. And it was so simple. First, I stamped out a new design of hexagons. Here it is, on my inspiration board next to my computer. (Along with 1treeyoga's lovely flier, a Christmas card, some flower pics, hubby and I in '03, my two-year old, and an old drawing of my friend sleeping.)

Then I scanned it in and broke apart the groups:

Next I copied, pasted, rotated, and merged until I got this:

Then I loaded it into Spoonflower and played with their options for repetition and size of the image. Then this amazing thing happened - a beautiful pattern emerged out of seeming randomness. Isn't that how life is, though? It seems like random chaos until we zoom out enough to see the overall pattern.

Anyway, I'm super excited to get my fat quarter in the mail. Still deciding what to make. Any suggestions? Keep it simple, folks. I'm no seamstress, just a girl who loves her Singer.

It's good to challenge yourself. It's good to feel uncomfortable and unsure about things; it helps you grow. Learning something new is good for you. So in this new year, I have a new challenge.

Figure out Twitter.

Do you remember back in November, I posted this cute little birdie and announced I was on Twitter? Yea, well, that was about as far as I got. It's not super intuitive, and it's a bit overwhelming. But when I mentioned that I was feeling a bit frustrated, some lovely folks in my life offered help. My cousin-in-law MaryKatherine (@mkhammer) is a twitter queen and sent a long note about etiquette. My good friend and fellow yogi Tony (@giantyogi) shared a book that beautifully explains the benefits of Twitter - and he should know, he's a social media expert.

You know what I love? When someone contacts me saying "hey, your work would be perfect for my website and to promote this awesome thing I'm doing." OK, that's not exactly what people say, but that's how I hear it. People do amazing things to help others, creating opportunities for growth and happiness. And sometimes my artwork fits in. It feels good to make art that is not only self-expression, but also helps others.

I'm a mom, and know how tough it can be when you bring home your first bundle of joy. It's hard to understand how and WHY they let you leave the hospital with a new human being!! So when Debbie Glander approached me about using my 'Mother and Child' image to help advertise her New Mothers support group, I was thrilled. Here's a look... Hello! Happy 2012, Y'all! It's been a busy year so far, hasn't it? I wanted to share a few things with you so far. Even though I'm not doing the "Art Every Day" challenge, I still want to post fairly regularly to share what I'm creating. But let's start with what my friend Helen created!!

I met Helen when we were both graduate students at Wayne State University, and always loved her easy brushstrokes and gentle depictions of children and animals. I asked her to create this beautiful painting for me to give to my dad for Christmas. She painted him on top of his World Champion reigning horse, "Smartest." Helen's work is amazing - check it what she's doing in her Etsy shop - Oil and Water Studios. Thanks, Helen!!

Next, I wanted to share with you the logo I created for Sage Yoga Center in Abilene, TX. I really enjoyed creating an image to help represent their studio. They offer yoga, counseling, massage and much more. The owner, Debbie, gave me free reign to create pretty much whatever I wanted so I focused on the sage plant itself. It was a pleasure to create, and I wish Sage Yoga Center all the best!!

I also thought I'd share one of my favorite pieces I've done in the past few years. I just hung it up in the house a few weeks ago, and it makes me smile every time I see it. It's a little piece, only 10" tall, on 2" thick wood. I used a French Curve stencil and a large wooden button (my grandmother's) to make the flowers. I don't think I'll ever sell this one... it needs to stay here at home with mama.

Warm December Wishes

I'm still getting used to warm weather in December. There are a few straggling bees and butterflies around, some flowers still blooming and this incredible moss in our back yard! It will be a green Christmas for us. The only white down here is the cotton in the fields.

Here's our neighborhood kitty visiting and Alistair running around.

Sharing Time

Hello! I have a few fun things to share today.

First are the beautiful folded stars I got from Harvest Moon by Hand. They are simply gorgeous and really brighten up the view out my window. Take a look in her shop, if only to be inspired! Notice on the windowsill are Alistair's glitter bottles (glued shut) that he shakes all around. And up top is our Christmas Card valence. I love looking at this little vignette, it makes me happy.

Second, I wanted to share with you a picture that a dear friend sent me of my print in her home. She has it set out with a necklace that I made for her, and says it's a nice reminder of the sacred right there in her living room. Can't ask for much more as an artist, can I??!

And lastly, I just wanted to remind everyone that December 15th is the cutoff for guaranteed shipping (in the US) by Christmas. I'm a pretty quick shipper, but I can't make any promises after the 15th. So get your order in quick! And pssst..... I've been including a special treat in my packages lately!!

Art Every Day- Day 30

Well, today is the last day of "Art Every Day Month." A big thank-you to everyone who gave me support and encouragement. You don't know how much it means to me.

Don't worry, I'm not going to stop making art. And I'll keep posting about it. I've learned that it is actually pretty easy to carve out time to do what's important. Decide what you're going to do, and just do it. I challenge everyone who followed me through this to pick one thing that you'd like to do more of (or that would be good for you to do more of!) and commit to do a little of it every day for a month. Too long? Do a week. My next challenge is a daily meditation practice. My practice is spotty at best. One's practice has to be consistent to have any real benefit. So that's my next goal- first a week, then a month of every day meditation. Maybe I'll blog about it!

So here is today's art. It's a collaboration with my son. He was painting and I loved what he created, so I scanned it, mirrored it and adjusted the color. There's something really delicate and beautiful about it. Like butterfly wings that turned into flowers. It really moves me, I think it is just so intensely beautiful. I hope you enjoy!

I got crafty today. I was inspired by this blue felted acorn ornament I bought a few years ago on Etsy. Sadly, the seller is no longer there! Otherwise, I would share her shop with you. But if you search "felted acorn ornament" you can find all kinds of goodies.

I took a slightly different approach and wound colored yarn into tight balls, then popped them into the empty acorn tops. I used a craft glue and let them dry overnight. Then this morning I hot-glued (I know, I know...) the ribbons on. The original felted ornament has a much more elegant way of attaching the ribbon that includes drilling a little hole. But my way is good enough for our tree!

Art Every Day- Day 28

I've shared before how much I love bees. I just think they're amazing. Over the weekend, I saw my first "November Bee." That's a bee still buzzing around in November. When I lived in PA, we used to joke about the "September Bees" that were on their last leg and would bump into your face. Bless their hearts, they just couldn't find any more flowers. I created this illustration using hand-cut stamps (what a brilliant idea!) and an India Ink pen.

We were going to go to the zoo, but we ended up at the pet store instead. The goldfish were jam-packed in their tank, swimming around like crazy! The colors were too good to ignore. I played a bit with some filters and processing in Photoshop to get these images. I love the high-contrast look on the left, and the "shrink wrapped" filter on the right made me laugh and cringe at the same time. I always tell my students that good art creates a reaction- good or bad... but never indifferent.

And I couldn't resist sharing a photo of these gorgeous eggs. I love eggs fresh from the farm, especially when they are varying sizes, shapes and colors. Look at that blue egg up front! Have you ever tried local farm eggs? I was shocked how bright the yolks are and how rich the eggs taste.

Art Every Day- Day 26

I give in. I'm a totally bird nerd, there's no use fighting it. I've been wanting to draw this winter cardinal for a while, and today was the day. I used my beloved Prismacolors in my sketchbook. The pages have a lovely off-white color and they are so smooth in texture. That allows the colored pencils to glide around, laying on thick and blending like butter.

I finished him while the boys slept - I wore Alistair out on a tour of Aiken County parks. He sure loved this park with all wooden structures. Isn't it cool?

Happy Thanksgiving! I've heard versions of this quote all week: "Happiness does not create Gratitude; rather Gratitude creates Happiness." Seems to be true.

Today's top 5 things I'm grateful for:

- a beautiful family
- a belly full of delicious foods, most of which was cooked by beautiful husband
- amazing technology that allows us to connect and share incredible things
- all of my teachers who have ever taught me anything
- time and inspiration to paint this little guy:

It's a ruby-throated hummingbird. We used to get dozens of them at our feeders, but I haven't seen any at this new house. I miss those little guys. Guess I'll have to be grateful for the mockingbirds.

It's a holiday week, so today's art for the day is a simple gesture. Alistair and I glued leaves to the window to give us a pretty view. We haven't seen any birds at the feeder in a while, and the flowers in the hanging basket are dead. So why not some pretty leaves? I used a glue stick to stick them up, which will wash off no problem when we're tired of leaves.

OK, today's art is way too crafty, even for me. It's so silly that it's almost cute. And I confess... I used a hot glue gun to put on those buttons. I know, I know... I'm so ashamed. That was one of many rules in my 3-D Design class at Wayne State University. NO GLUE GUNS. Because they're lame, they leave strings everywhere, and it's a shortcut. (Another rule I had was to never use the term "pop" as in "make it pop." A rule I violated on Day 15.) But I have company coming in a few hours, a hungry toddler and a 3 month old baby, so I forgive myself.

OK, here it is! I finished up that fabric chain garland today. I don't know why I'm so into making holiday decor (more projects to follow...), it's not like me! Maybe because it's a good excuse to sew! A few pics of the garland quickly thrown up on the mantel:

And I'm super excited to share a project I've been working on for a few weeks now! I was asked to design a logo for the lovely Andy, owner of Yogaahhh...LLC in Anderson, SC. Isn't that a great name? As in, "yoga, ahhh..." She asked me to create two poses as well as the font. I had a great time working with her and discovering all that we have in common. We're both SC transplants from MI, and both had babies this past July, and know a few of the same yoga folks from back home. So thank you, Andy, for the opportunity to create more art, and for being such a fun email pal!

More hexagons, different medium. My lovely Prismacolors on Canson's Mi Tientes paper. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Time to give stained glass a try, right?

I also started a sewing project for the holidays. One of my favorite things to do as a kid with my best friend, Jennie, was to make an advent paper chain. I saw this fun idea on Pinterest to make a chain out of fabric strips! This will be perfect across my mantel. I'm only partway done... I will be sure to post when it's finished. Still lovin on my hexagons. I cut a few more, played with them while my hubby made pancakes this morning. I just love the way the colors vibrate next to each other and how the facets snug right up next to each other.

I also finger painted with my son. That counts, right?
