KMT Lidköping (www.kmtgroup.com/lidkoping/) has unveiled its new hard-turning VTG4000 (Vertical Turning Grinding) machine that uses a combination of Renishaw SiGNUM optical angle and linear encoders to achieve the required accuracy, and Renishaw magnetic encoders placed on the exposed axes of the cutting heads.

“Our largest machine used to accommodate parts up to 600 mm diameter, but the VTG4000 can handle diameters in excess of 4000 mm, the size of the largest wind turbine bearings. This is hard turning and grinding which can be very demanding, and the positioning accuracy is very important, with a direct effect on the quality of the finished bearings. A standard size machine, using ballscrews on the axes, will manage to maintain a 3 µm form deviation, yet despite the considerable difference in relative size, the VTG4000 has been proven to achieve an exceptional form deviation of less than 1 µm, with feed resolution in 0.1 µm steps,” said Eive Johansson, Lidköping’s VTG Chief Designer.

“At the heart of a Lidköping machine are the linear slides. The combination of hydrostatic guideways, air seals and linear motors create a stiff, accurate and maintenance-free system. To achieve dynamic stiffness we need high gain and the gain is linked to the quality of the encoder scales. It also makes a big difference that the angle encoders have the scale integrated directly onto the ring,” he added.

Mr. Johansson first saw the Renishaw SiGNUM encoders during the EMO 2007 exhibition in Hannover, and then followed a period of rigorous testing by the company. As he explained: “The choice of Renishaw was easy; we compared different scales assembled on our reference slide and bought the one with the best performance. It was important that the linear encoders could be supplied in a continuous length of at least 4.5 m and SiGNUM is the easiest way to achieve this. The Renishaw encoders also give more resistance to dirt. We have now fitted Renishaw encoders to all four linear slides and as expected, we have had no problems!”

“The rotary table has the same design principle, with hydrostatic radial and axial bearings, air seals and torque motors for the drive. The same analysis was done, and the Renishaw SiGNUM angle encoders were chosen,” he added.

The Renishaw encoders have an integral patented set-up LED that speeds installation and eliminates the need for separate set-up equipment/complex external, or oscilloscopes.

“One of the best features of the Renishaw encoders is how easy they are to set-up,” Mr. Johansson said. “With the scale attached and the readhead approximately located the indicator lights make it very easy to see how well the two elements are aligned and then make the final adjustments.”

Aerotech (www.aerotech.com) has unveiled a new PRO-LM range of direct-drive, brushless linear servomotor-driven stages. The range now includes a new 280mm wide version that comes in eight travel options from 300mm to 1.5m for heavy-load precision positioning and high-throughput applications in harsh environments. The fully protected and side-sealed/hard-top stages have heavy-duty linear motion guide bearings, optional cable management and sub-micron encoder feedback. These are available in nominal widths of 165mm, 225mm and 280mm, which can be mixed to optimize application load and travel requirements.

The new PRO280LM is based on the successful side-sealed design that the company has developed over the past generations of ball screw-driven stages and linear motor. The aluminum hard top cover – finished in a scratch-resistant hard coat – is a preferred alternative to plastic bellows or soft fabric stage covers, especially made for applications like laser machining. Its vertical-tensioned side straps completely seal the internal stage components from process or machining debris. A wide array of optional tabletops with steel inserts permit YZ, XZ or XY configurations with other PRO series stages with 5arc-sec orthogonality certification. Tabletop plates are available for Aerotech’s AGR, ADRT and ADRS series rotary stages or to suit customer workpiece mounting in inch and metric hole patterns. Cable management is also available for single-axis or customer-specified XYZ+rotary, XY, and XYZ stage configurations.

Aerotech said that its new PRO280LM features a positioning resolution of 250nm from a choice of amplified sine output encoders or 0.1 micron line driver. Additional impressive specifications include accuracy to +/-3 microns for the 1.5m travel version (+/-2 microns for the 300mm travel stage) with speeds to 2m/s and acceleration to 3g.

The company announces the dual carriage RGS04 motorized linear rail system. The system combines the company’s patented motion technologies in a single integrated system. The RGS brand linear rail will come preassembled with the IDEA programmable actuator that simplifies product integration for the OEM.

The rails have standard wear-compensating, anti-backlash driven carriages for accurate positioning. All moving surfaces have engineered polymers that run on Kerkote TFE coating, giving a stable platform for several linear motion applications.

The IDEA programmable system combines a fully programmable, integrated stepper motor drive with Haydon hybrid linear actuator. The programmable drive has an easy-to-use patent pending graphic user interface to directly program motion profiles into the system. It also contains a debug utility for easy troubleshooting, allowing line-by-line execution of a motion program.

By combining technologies into one preassembled unit, the company is able to improve system integration for the end user or equipment OEM. The overall cost is lowered by giving a complete solution as it simplifies product development with fewer components required and eliminates the need for rotary-to-linear conversion.

Applications include laboratory instrumentation, life science equipment, semiconductor processing equipment and other applications requiring precision linear motion.

HAMEL, MN – Tolomatic’s new ERD electronic rod-style actuators are designed as an economical electric alternative to non-repairable pneumatic cylinders and provide design engineers with a new option for automating manual processes. Sleek and compact, ERD electric rod-style actuators deliver forces up to 75 pounds (334 N) at speeds up to 40 inches per second (1,016 mm/sec). ERD actuators are stroke configurable and ship within five days from order entry at the factory. The products are suitable for a wide variety of applications, including product change-overs, pick-and-place, sorting and diverting, heat-staking and more.

The ERD electric rod-style actuator is available in body sizes that are equivalent to 5/8”, 1” and 1.5” bore non-repairable pneumatic cylinders. These three sizes are available in stroke lengths up to 8, 10 and 12 inches, respectively, and forces up to 20, 40 and 75 pounds. The three sizes, from small to large, accept NEMA 11, 17 or 23 frame stepper and servo motors. The acme lead screw is made of high-performance steel and is available in three lead sizes per size to optimize speed or force.

ERD products are round bodied, following the footprint of most pneumatic actuators in this performance class. The rear head of the actuator features an oversized main bearing to accommodate high thrust loads and provide long life. The main tube and thrust tube are made of stainless steel for high rigidity and corrosion resistance, while the metric-threaded nose mount accepts a jam nut that provides convenient mounting for many applications. Mounting options include a rear trunnion mount, foot mounts or a front flange mount.

The ERD actuators can accommodate six different sensing or switching choices: reed, solid state PNP (sourcing) or solid state NPN (sinking), normally open, flying leads or quick-disconnect. The switches are activated by a standard internal magnet located inside the thrust tube. Commonly used for end-of-stroke positioning, these switches allow clamp-on installation anywhere along the actuator tube. All switches are CE rated and are RoHS compliant for environmental compatibility.
