The artistry and innovation put into some tree house designs and plans elevates them from fun getaways to architectural wonders. They arere located all over the world, from just north of NYC to the rain forests of Costa Rica. These fifteen incredible tree houses might just make you want to leave your own home for a loftier living space.

German cooperative baumraum offers fully customizable tree houses made primarily of wood and rope, with clean, modern lines that defy the traditional assumptions about what tree houses should look like. The tree houses above were commissioned by clients in Austria and New York, respectively, and were built to suit the individual sites with the intent of disturbing the surroundings as little as possible.

The interactive Steampunk Tree House is a movable work of art created by over 60 San Francisco area artists, crafted in part from recycled and reclaimed materials. It has traveled to the Stagecoach and Coachella music festivals and has been featured on BoingBoing TV. The 30′tall, 8-ton tree was “made to explore the relationship between our rapidly changing natural world and the persistent human drive to connect with it and one another.”

The Biosphere Tree house is situated in a great Indian banyan in the Manoa Valley of Oahu. This seven-level tree house has transparent roofs, electricity, a composting toilet, hanging bridge and stunning views of the valley and the sea beyond Waikiki. A 7-foot steel “star dome” swings above a pool in the stream at the foot of the tree.

The three tree houses above were created by Blueforest, a UK-based company offering full design, consultancy and management services for tree house projects across Europe. Blueforest’s adult-size tree houses start at around $15,000 and many have kitchenettes, bathrooms and full-sized living rooms. Some even include high-tech features like fingerprint locks, CCTV control centers and plasma televisions.

The Alnwick Garden tree house is one of the largest wooden tree houses in the world at 6,000 square feet. Inside is a learning center, restaurant complete with fireplace, play areas, turrets and rope bridges. The tree house was built using natural materials from sustainable resources including Canadian cedar, Scandinavian Redwood and Scots pine. The Alnwick garden is a public garden space in Northumberland, England.

These two relaxed yet highly functional tree houses are part of the Finca Bella Vista tree house community in the rainforest of Costa Rica. The community is home to ecologically minded adventurers wishing to preserve the 300 acres of rainforest surrounding their homes. Its residents enjoy hydroelectric and solar power and wi-fi internet, and have biodigestors to process waste. Dozens of land parcels are still available for future residents to design and build their own tree houses.

Romero Studios, helmed by Roderick and Anisa Romero, designs and creates tree houses so striking they look more like art installations than dwellings. Their work includes one of the tree houses at Finca Bella Vista and the four tree houses pictured above, among many others. Clients have the freedom to create the tree house of their dreams, from Moroccan lantern-shapes and suspended ‘nests’ to rustic cabins in the sky. Special touches include built-in storage and stained glass windows.

This 5 story facility sweeps a wooded corner of the campus with an organic, vegetated form that blends landscape and structure, nature and high-tech and symbolizes the creativity it houses.

The glass façade provides a high performance building envelope that reduces solar gain and heat load while allowing the benefits of natural views and daylight into creative spaces. The glass walls provide a visual exchange between indoors and out allowing students and teachers to experience the building, the surrounding landscape and the interior plaza as fluid spaces. Diffused natural daylight is abundant throughout studios and classrooms, filtered through the surrounding foliage.

The curving green roofs distinguish the building from among the other structures on campus but the line between landscape and building is blurred. The roofs serve as informal gathering spaces challenging linear ideas and stirring perception. The roofs create open space, insulate the building, cool the surrounding air and harvest rainwater for landscaping irrigation. Planted grasses mix with native greenery to colonize the building and bond it to the setting.

Finishes are intentionally raw to act as a backdrop for the art, media and design projects. Concrete walls and columns, cement-sand screeded floors, timber railings and a neutral palette define the interior spaces which vary in shape and size. This amazing design seems to offer a new experience at every elevation or perspective fulfilling the intent that a school for art should inspire creativity.

The brick veneer should be constructed as shown in Fig. 3. The brick masonry should be continuous through all floor intersections so that all the brick masonry bears on the foundation or foundation wall and complies with building code fire safety requirements. Additional information on brick veneer construction is provided in Technical Notes 28 Series.

                    Interior Non-Loadbearing

When I saw these pictures for the first time I’ve immediately thought at the amazing 3D chalk drawings done by Julian Beever ( see his works here ). What you can see in these pictures is a brilliant new take on house decoration, and I’m sure that that my readers would want to admire these pictures. This guy does an amazing job, but unfortunately the work of this one mystery man has been floating all around the internet for some time now, but does anyone know his name, or something about him. Finally I would like to ask you to post a comment if you know who is the author of these amazing 3 dimensional wall paintings, because he should be getting some commissions.

Below is a collection of new never-before-seen images from Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Much of the historic city is currently being demolished. Each day, several buildings undergo controlled-demolition with explosives that leave dust clouds which seem to symbolize the past giving way to the future. Over the rubble, some of the tallest buildings on the planet are rising to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population and an ever growing number of pilgrims from the world's fastest growing religion who make their spiritual journeys (Umrah and Hajj) to Mecca from every part of the world. Welcome to a holy city in transition--Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The fantastic looking bike is the brainchild of Mission Motors and Fuseproject, and is designed to have a top speed of 150mph, with a range of around 150 miles. Yves Béhar’s projects have always exhibited a deft balance between stunning aesthetics and sustainable design, and his latest opus is no exception.

If you were to name some of the coolest projects that you’ve seen here at Inhabitat, the odds are that at least one of them was conceived by industrial designer extraordinaire Yves Béhar. Unveiled at this year’s TED conference, the Mission One motorcycle is the designer’s latest groundbreaking design. The fully electric motorcycle boasts 100 lb-ft of torque and is powered by a high-energy lithium-Ion battery that charges in under two hours.

The bike is currently being exhibited at the Kohler Livinghome at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. The first 50 bikes will be delivered in 2010, and will run a cool $68,995, so it’s time to start saving.

+ Fuse Project

+ Mission Motors

Of the 42 awards and commendations for outstanding design presented by the Australian Institute of Architects New South Wales Chapter, half were awarded to smart and savvy adaptive re-use projects demonstrating the current trend towards smarter, more intelligent ways of reusing the state’s massive supply of existing building stock. There were also several great examples of new sustainable constructions. From recycled to brand-new, here’s a look at some of the exceptional architectural projects from Oz.

The major award categories included: public architecture, urban design, commercial architecture, heritage architecture, interior architecture, new residential, residential additions and alterations, multi-family, and small projects. Several additional prizes were also awarded, including a special jury prize. Of note among the winning or commended projects were:

Heritage Architecture Greenway Award: Tonkin Zulaikha Greer’s CarriageWorks at Eveleigh.
Dating back to the 1880’s and NSW’s hey day during the steam era, the Eveleigh Carriage Workshops are a great example of how a landmark site can be given new life without forsaking the old. The design maintains existing elements that retain their patina of age, while offering new generations flexible theatre spaces, administration offices, workshop spaces and amenities in discrete concrete boxes clearly articulated from the heritage fabric.

Public Architecture Award: Harry Seidler & Associates‘ Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre.
With its curving roof trusses, the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre is one of Sydney’s great public rooms. As one of Seidler’s last projects, the centre stands as a fitting memorial to one of Australia’s leading modernists.

Interior Architecture Award: Stanic Harding’s Darling Point Apartment 2.
This stunning space occupies the entire 18th floor of a circular building offering 360-degree views that include the harbour, bridge and Opera House in Sydney. The original layout made a clumsy use of the available space with poor integration of services, whereas Stanic Harding’s new layout is a fluid sequence of radial spaces.

Residential Architecture (Additions+Alterations) Award: Peter Stutchbury Architecture’s Garden House.
Having previously designed the studio in the rear garden, this scope of this remodel included connecting the original 1977 Michael Dysart house with all other buildings and their adjacent gardens, unifying the property around a centrally located dining pavilion. The design approach shows an ongoing interest in the blurring and articulation of internal and external spaces.

Architecture Award: Reg Lark Architect’s Balgowlah House.
This is an elegant and inventive home whose front facade leans back from the street. The finely detailed, louvred, inclined plane presenting an alternative to the typical suburban facades. Within the house, space is layered horizontally and vertically. The result is a beautifully proportioned and spectacular space overlooking the harbor.

Commendation: Casey Brown Architecture’s Permanent Camping.
Its small size, three metres square at the base and diminishing over its two stories, exaggerates the structure’s fragility in the vastness of its surroundings. The copper walls open outward hinged horizontally at the top and hand winched into place forming striking lean-to roofs akin to verandahs. A bush kitchen, a slow combustion stove and a loft reached by a ladder occupy the diminutive interior from where the uninhabited landscape can be contemplated.

Special Jury Prize: Paul Pholeros for his work with indigenous tribes.
Paul founded Healthabitat to formulate methodologies for making the basic amenities of housing functional in remote communities. He’s now working on an eco-village in China. The revolutionary clear water artificial lagoons, transparent to a depth of 35 meters and unprecedented in design and construction methods, are the brainchild of Crystal Lagoons founder, biochemist and Chilean businessman Fernando Fischmann. Equivalent in size to an incredible 6,000 standard domestic pools, details of its technology are to be unveiled for the first time at Cityscape Dubai later this month.

That is like a pilot saying he saw nothing wrong with opening the cockpit door at 23,000 ft for some fresh air. Call me old-fashioned, but knowing how laws work just seems like it should be a prerequisite for making laws. If he is lying and knew what he was doing when pleading guilty, I think he should step down. If he really was that incompetent, I think he should stay. I figure he can’t be any worse than the other silly people who are already in Congress. His excuse that he sits wide-legged in the stall and accidentally touched the officer’s foot with his own foot seems completely plausible to me. I know sometimes at the urinal, I have needed more space. Heck, sometimes I even accidentally use the urinal beside me while someone is already there, with sincere apologies of course. At church, I need an entire pew due to my wide-legged posture and my uncontrollable sliding from side to side across the pew. I sincerely covet the old woman’s forgiveness for shattering her hip during Amazing Grace. I hope that she was not just giving the song lip service and she drops her charges against me. He also said he was reaching under the stall to slide over…He was reaching under the stall to slide a bolted down toilet over. Then to pick up something off the floor despite never offering up any piece of paper he reached on the pissy toilet floor to retrieve. I’d think that if the piece of paper was so important to pick up off of an airport bathroom floor, it would be easy to produce. I know if my wife gave birth and my baby was born on the airport bathroom floor, it’s up for grabs. I kid, I kid! I would pick my child up and wrap it in a disinfectant wipe. The Senator said he thought pleading guilty would make the charges go away. Apparently prisons are full of people who made this mistake as well.

Judge: “How do you plead to these two counts of armed robbery?”
Soon-to-be-Butch’s playmate: “Guilty, your honor. Let’s all go home”
Judge: “You are now hereby sentenced to 45 years to booty-pounding prison!”
Butch’s new boytoy: “WHAT?? I JUST WANTED TO PUT THIS BEHIND ME!”
Butch: “I’ll get behind you! He he he!

How many people have been ravaged by Butch due to making this same mistake? I think now is the time to galvanize the force of the American people behind this confusing notion of “guilty” pleas and pass legislation to define what exactly guilty means and its ramifications. If the Senator, a learned man can be so easily tricked, hoodwinked, and confused, then what hope do the rest of us have to understand matters that are clearly beyond the scope of any human’s understanding? There should be people who make a living explaining and operating on the behalf of those who struggle with such mentally challenging concepts like N-O-scent. What is that, you say? There are people who do that? Attorneys??? Well the Senator was clearly a victim of society and needs to be supported in his feeble mental-state by loving taxpayers. We can even give him a “job” to make him feel important and clap for him whenever he does anything that would be considered juvenile to you and me, like balancing the checkbook. We’ll call it Congress.

http://www.humor-blogs.com/ always supplies the two-ply

Japan and live octopus in Korea. Below are some pictures from Modern Toilet, a food chain that operates 12 toilet themed restaurants in Taiwan; these pics are from its outlet in Shilin, Taipei…

Asphalt Spot is a landscape project in rural Japan by French architects R&Sie. The project is a hybrid between landscape art and infrastructure. It contains 20-space car park that looks as if it has been struck by an earthquake. It’s really amazing and funny.
Asphalt Spot was completed in 2003 as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2003 – a cultural festival that saw 157 artists and architects from 23 countries produce 224 artworks in the Shinano Basin of Niigata Prefecture.
Designed by Parisian architects R&Sie, Asphalt Spot integrated visitor facilities and parking. Yet the architects treated the project as an art installation itself, designing a structure that mimics the bumpy terrain and merges seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
There is also an exhibition hall, which is used as a venue for art exhibitions. The hall is punctuated by a forest of leaning concrete columns that hold up the car park above and which have been covered in canvas sleeves, as has the underside of the ceiling.

The Pantulan Pavilion includes a living room, dining room, gourmet kitchen, library, entertainment room and bathroom. All spaces are connected by a soaring alang alang roof and walkways to each separate pavilion offering panoramic views to the rest of the house and the rice fields beyond.

Our gourmet kitchen is fully equipped to allow our staff to create memorable meals for your pleasure, offering both European and Balinese meals upon request. We also offer fine Australian wines, as well as a selection of beers and soft drinks. Breakfast is included in your package.

The Dining Room
The dining room is an extension of the kitchen dominated by a five meter mirbau wood table. Seating sixteen people comfortably, it overlooks the reflecting pond on one side and the bamboo waterfall on the other. The living room is open to the rice fields and the lotus pond. The comfortable terrazzo seating is covered in cushions decorated in navy and gray Balinese cotton. A small table situated on the rice field side gives splendid views in the morning while taking breakfast, or for playing games on a hot afternoon. Beside the table, a beautiful Javanese marriage bull and cart looks as if it were arriving from the sawah.. Dominating the center wall is a stunning painting by local Bali resident Wolfgang Widmoser

Above the living room, the library contains a PC and printer for your convenience. As of now, there is no internet connection available at Villa Pantulan. However, there are many excellent connections in Ubud, ten minutes away. It is also a comfortable place to read in privacy.

Our entertainment room includes a satellite television, DVD, music system and a Playstation. There are over 200 DVDs, as well as many CDs for your entertainment. Comfortably decorated in shades of green, the surround seating and futon mattress make it hard to leave this comfortable viewing room.

The bathroom conveniently situated next to the entertainment room is also used as a pool bathroom. Like all the bathrooms at Villa Pantulan, it has its own exterior garden.

The Lotus Pavilion
The Lotus Pavilion is a two-story structure comprising sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. On the ground floor, a stunning wall carving depicting village life adorns the back wall. A small sofa, two chairs, a coffee table and a sofa table are covered in brown Balinese cotton. On the table and long benches are fine examples of Balinese glass and traditional wooden boat. Upstairs, a large
bedroom overlooks the rice field and swimming pool. A beautiful white stone Buddha head decorates the back of the bed, and delicate colored organza is lit from behind to cast a beautiful light on the bed at night. This is a truly romantic bedroom and as the sun sets, there is a magnificent view from this bedroom. The bathroom includes a waterfall and a koi fish pond next to the outdoor shower. Two porcelain bowls sit on top of terrazzo counters and are well-lit by Italian light fixtures. A high wall, covered in fern and flowering plants, gives you complete privacy.

The Temple Garden Pavilion
The Temple Garden pavilion has two bedrooms, both decorated in shades of tropical green and deep sea blue. In each room, a queen size bed is surrounded by a white mosquito net emphasizing the dramatic bed linens, cushions and curtains made from Balinese cotton. The lower bedroom extends out to the Temple garden, koi pond and orchid garden. The upper bedroom offers splendid views of the rice field and an overall view of the house and orchid garden below. The bathroom on the ground floor is a striking bamboo and white pebble garden designed around the outdoor shower. Two porcelain bowls set on terrazzo counters and Italian lighting fixtures make this a stunning bathroom.

Behind the Lotus pavilion, tucked away discretely behind the wall, is the Rice Field Pavilion. A two bedrooms structure decorated in shades of Irish green, Balinese red and black add dramatic flair to an already dramatic setting. Each bedroom opens out onto a different view from a small wooden deck, on one side the Temple Garden and on the other, the rice fields. Each bedroom has a queen sized bed canopied in white mosquito net and a beautiful Balinese Ikat design. All beds are carefully lit from inside by beautiful Italian lamps. A small table and chair for writing postcards or letters and a mirror complete this room. On the walls, are drawings and paintings by local artists.

Artist Studio– T-House
At the north end of the swimming pool is our Artists studio. A two level pavilion designed by Tony Gwilliam. Built on water, it is an ideal place to take tea and admire the rice fields on your doorstep. A small table rises from the middle of the floor Japanese style, enabling you to put your feet in the water on hot afternoons. Upstairs is an office space with a magnificent view of the mountains in the distance.

Massage Bale
At the south end of the pool is a massage/meditation bale. A single story structure decorated with fine white cotton curtains for privacy. All massage therapists can be booked through our villa manager.

Swimming Pool
Beyond Pantulan pavilion is the swimming pool. Built for laps, it is twenty-five meters long with an infinity edge flowing towards the rice fields

Simple yet intriguingly powerful, these beautiful sink columns from Artceram’s La Fontana collection will leave no one indifferent.
