The Dreaded Visible Bra Strap

After recently discussing the ins - and visible outs - of bra straps, I discovered today that my favorite sleeveless top shows off my bra straps too.

What to do; what to do?

Do I indulge in a few new tops? I like that approach. Any excuse for some nice clothes is an excuse worth considering. What about a few new bras? Clearly, if my straps are slipping beyond their bounds, perhaps the issue is better fit. (Another good idea - after all, a few new bras can perk up both the spirits and the breasts.) Then again, maybe I need to consider the merits of bra straps that are bejeweled and decorated, so I can show them off with pride!

Nah - that’s just not me.

I think there are those who can carry off bra straps that show. It’s a fun look - but it isn’t exactly the look for a woman with young children (unless she is also under 30). My fashion maven status may remain in my 40’s, but I find that a less flashy look results in more positive attention and less muttering about things like a “second childhood”.

Which brings me back to straps. Bras with spaghetti straps are hard to find in a triple D; while the mechanics of a bra put the bulk of the work squarely on the band (where it should be), it does look a bit funny to have delicate, tiny straps on an otherwise larger-sized bra.

However, it’s not impossible. It’s really all about fit.

Which reminds me - It’s time to review some of Monique’s best bra shopping tips:

The right bra for the right fashion. This one is simple - if you are wearing a sleeveless top, buy a sleeveless bra! (Just kidding.) So, if the bra you want to wear has delicate spaghetti straps, it’s perfect fine for that slim-fitting tank top or shell sweater. Fit the bra to the clothing.
If you already own the clothing, go bra shopping with the outfit on! Another easy way to ensure that your bra will work with your clothes is to shop for a bra while wearing the particular item. You can see immediately if the bra creates a flattering look in the garment - or not.
Have a variety of bras. Dressing comfortably and in a way that flatters your shape is always easier if you keep a selection of bras in your size - especially if you aren’t keen on constant handwashing of your lingerie. (I’m certainly not.)

Which leads me to think that I might just buy a new bra. It’s my husband’s birthday, so I have the perfect excuse - we have a date tonight.

The one common denominator in all of these photos is the standout stockings and hosiery. Photographer Katja Mayer has captured several models wearing decorative thigh highs, perhaps while each was practicing their stretches! Our favorite is the purple pair in the first picture, and of course we always love the vintage-looking seamed stockings. What's interesting is that stockings are such a simple item that make such a dramatic impact, particularly when it comes to fashion photography.

What way do you like to wear your lingerie?

Sexy? Or Sensible?

Bazaar just published an article, Lingerie: Sexy or Sensible, arguing each side. Why can't lingerie be sexy and sensible? Multipurposed? Something that is fashionable and functional? I think Carole Radziwill's (image below left) position of sexy (published below) does prove that lingerie can be flirty, fun and functional.

"Silk stockings and garter belts are the new burned bra. Seriously, though, a friend recently called me antifeminist for saying it. Me! The foxhole journalist. The girl who covered two wars, lived in refugee camps, slept in tents with military infantry units, and wore government-issue fatigues (tailored, naturally). And the girl who likes to wear sexy underwear.

My top drawer is filled with demi bras and lace panties, peekaboo undies, corsets, garter belts, and an endless supply of silk stockings. But I don't save it all for special occasions or weekend getaways with a man. I wear it because it makes me feel good.

Like most addictions, mine started innocently, when Kiki De Montparnasse -- the high-end lingerie shop famous for sexy little nothings (not to mention 24-karat-gold-plated vibrators) -- opened up in my neighborhood. I was curious. Soon Kiki and I fell madly in love. I stole entire afternoons in her dimly lit dressing rooms trying on teddies and rompers, briefs and thongs, silk slips and thigh-high cashmere socks, and my favorite, garter belts.

I'll never forget my first: nude silk with black-satin trim. The night I bought it, I channeled Susan Sarandon in Bull Durham, rolling the stockings up slowly to the belt and attaching the hooks one by one. Then I threw on a casual dress and met friends for dinner. I'm not a shy girl, but the garter made me feel empowered. My feminine underwear made me act more like a man! Plus, wearing this secret ammo kicked up my confidence a notch, and if you think garters are sexy, watch the effect a little confidence has on men. A whiff of it and they circle like wolves.

Sure, cotton can be hot, too, like on Scarlett Johansson in the opening of Lost in Translation, but that's where it should stay: in the movies. Real life needs fantasy, and you shouldn't wait for a man to provide it. Owning your sexuality gives you power, and power is what feminism is all about, after all. So why burn a bra when you can wear a lace demi cup under your man-tailored suit? No one has to know but you."

One of my favorite brands that is fashionably functional is Chantelle. The Caprise Bra (directly above) and Basic Invisible Bra (image at the top of the post) are versatile bras that can be worn everyday and take you into the evening. Chantelle, a luxurious brand, carries bra that are not only comfortable but also beautiful, coming in a variety of sizes whether you have small breasts or are large busted.

You can take the position of sexy or sensible, or you can find a lingerie brand that is versatile enough to suit your needs. Either route you choose, make sure the you "Celebrate Your Inner Eve." When you feel good under your clothes, you'll outwardly project that confidence and comfort.

Veronika Kotlajic’s Narcisse Designs for 2009

Veronika Kotlajic is the designer behind the brand and clothing is just one of her many interests/careers including artist, web designer, former Playboy model, photographer, fetish model, fashion model, erotic art gallery owner, and probably other things she doesn’t promote. This year, the collection is inspired by the femme fatale.

There are a few new pieces in the “lingerie” category, but Veronika creates fashion that has no problem ignoring the traditional lines of inner and outer wear.

Since Narcisse caters to a very specific demographic via bespoke services, I don’t have much information about pricing; however, contact ND through the website and they will work with you on sizing, pricing, and bespoke services. This year, there is a movie as well.

Lingerie And The High-Priced Divorce

If you are a man, buying lingerie can get you in trouble - at least, if you are spending a lot on it, and it’s for your mistress.

We don’t know for sure if George David, chairman of United Technologies, regrets his decision to visit La Perla - but given the fact that his lingerie purchase habits have been discussed on the witness stand at his divorce proceedings, one can only guess so.

At least he showed some class. La Perla carries some of the nicest swimwear on earth. The current collection, Spring / Summer 2009, includes some beautiful suits with eye popping details. The suits are both delicious and sensuous. They are also quite expensive - with both one piece and two piece suits coming in at over $600 US.

Perhaps that is what put off David’s ex-wife, the countess Marie Douglas-David: he apparently is accused of spending thousands and thousands on his mistress on fancy items at La Perla.

It’s not hard to do. La Perla doesn’t just have swimwear - it also carries an astonishing array of bras, panties and other lingerie. The current collections include one called Appeal, which definitely lives up to its name. While the La Perla website shows the collection in black, it also comes in two other colours: “powder” and coral. (Coral is an eye-popping orange-red which defies description.)

Of course, if you are buying lingerie for your mistress, perhaps you’d be looking first and foremost at the Black Label line. Mind you, it’s still pretty easy to burn through a lot money: the Bustier-Brief from the Diamond Collection is a mere $479 US.

Given that the reports say that David spent thousands at La Perla, it’s likely that his mistress was well outfitted - at least in the bedroom. However, his thousands at La Perla could cost him millions in his divorce. The former Mrs David is asking for a third of his fortune, or $99 million dollars.

Britain v Italy: the underwear round

4 Secrets to a Hotter Relationship...

1. Flirt like it’s your first night together.
Think back to those early days of dating. Every laugh, lingering look, or under-the-table leg brush was a guaranteed goose bump-giver. Well, you can turn back the clock to that supercharged state by making a simple shift: Start flirting again. If you’re at a party, slink away, get a couple of drinks, and flirtatiously introduce yourself like you’re strangers. It may take him a second to catch on, but once he does, it’ll set a sexier tone for the rest of the night -- and remind you both that there’s still a lot to discover about each other.

2. Make your significant other do a double-take.
That’s one of the brilliant things about being a couple -- being so at ease in each other’s company. But there’s a line between being comfortable and letting yourselves go. (Hint: If you frequently show up to the dinner table in sweaty gym gear or go to bed with zit cream and prickly cactus legs, you’re guilty as charged.) Check out a concert you’d never think to get tickets for, or explore a totally different part of town. The adrenaline rush will be an aphrodisiac.

4. Pounce…even when you’re not in the mood.
Skipping the most intimate act you two could possibly enjoy together, you’re not doing your relationship any favors. Here’s why: Intercourse and orgasms trigger oxytocin, the “love hormone,” to be released in your bodies, which makes you feel incredibly fused as a couple. Sex is also the gift that keeps on giving: The more you do it, the more you’ll want to do it, so it actually stokes desire. So set that alarm clock a little earlier for wake-up action, and put down that pint of mocha pecan postdinner and enjoy another kind of bedroom treat (better yet, bring in the ice cream too). You don’t need Olympic-level performances -- just enough enthusiasm to get that mojo going.

Lane Bryant Introduces the Indulgence Collection

US plus-sized apparel chain, Lane Bryant, has just introduced a new addition to Cacique (their lingerie collection). This new line is called the Indulgence Collection, and features embellished bras and panties that are being billed as a bit sexier than normal Cacique fare. While Lane Bryant/Cacique mostly offers everyday underpinnings, their older collections do have some sexy bras in them. The difference with the new Indulgence Collection is that bras are based on Cacique’s best-selling bra frames to deliver sexy, yet practical, bras. Indulgence will only be offered in Lane Bryant’s “Double Platinum” stores or on the website.

Right now, Indulgence features only 4 bra and panty sets. The line is available in sizes 36C-44DDD, and free bra fittings are available at Lane Bryant and Cacique stores.

The knickers are really cute: they are really stretchy and are large made so you’ll definitely want to order a size smaller than usual – which could count as an extra bonus for some!

I’ve loved Melissa Odabash for some time, so I was thrilled by the Shopbop Sale. I managed to bag myself an amazing 70% off the Zebra Pareo, and if that wasn’t enough, an extra 20% with a promotion code and free shipping – what is there not to love! The color (retro brown) works with most solid color tops and the heaviness of the fabric ensured my legs wouldn’t be bothered by any pesky mozzies. If there is a downside it’s that it sold out, so I hope you got yours!

Rescue Beauty Lounge

Summer sun, pool chorine and bug repellent spray can wreak havoc with my skin, so I’m always interested in bath & body products that will keep dry skin at bay. I’d only heard of Rescue Beauty Lounge nail lacquer (dazzling colors and matching price $18) and posh salons; since even the new line’s label was designed by Sara Rotman, I knew it was the pedigree I was hoping for. Due to its fine grains the exfoliating body wash didn’t quite work for me as an exfoliant, but it’s delightful for a bubble bath! The hand cream was lovely: rich (RBL knows hands), but not greasy, it quickly absorbs into skin and all of the products smell great, with Wild Rosemary Pamplemousse being my all time fave!

I’m giving this a Grade B. And don’t forget, you can still enjoy 75% off with the promo code: SMELL GOOD!

Sad news today: it looks as though the rumoured Emporio Armani underwear ad campaign starring David Beckham and Angelina Jolie was just a rumour after all.

Beckham has denied it, says Us Weekly: "I don't think that's true! I definitely don't think that's true. I think it's something put out in the press," he's reported to have said.

Something to file under wouldn't-it-be-nice, then, but in the meantime, Emporio Armani has kindly released a nice behind the scenes video of the David and Victoria underwear shoot. Enjoy.

The Sunday Times Style magazine's wardrobe mistress had an interesting query this week: "Where can I find a non-wired bra that actually looks like lingerie?" asked a reader who despaired of finding a soft cup bra that was neither a maternity bra or a sports bra.

The magazine recommended Princesse Tam-Tam's Toquade bra, £39 - "no hint of sporty there".

Alternatively, try Made by Niki, Calvin Klein, or Huit for wire-free bras that also look beautiful in the boudoir.

I have long been a fan of Elle Macpherson Intimates. Every season I am impressed with the amazingly beautiful collections that are created. The pieces are absolutely exquisite and always pay special attention to detail. The Fall 2009 collection is no exception! I had the privilege of seeing the collection up close and personal a few weeks ago and, trust me, each piece is spectacular! And if that alone wasn’t music to my ears, the next tidbit was. EMI is going full cup! That’s right. This fall, ladies with cup sizes D-G will get to experience the decadence and opulence that is Elle Macpherson Intimates along with all the support they need. While some of the styles will overlap, there will be designated pieces just for the D-G crowd that mimic the same aesthetic.

All of the ranges in the collection celebrate beautiful, vibrant, delicious COLOR! Popcorn yellow, amethyst orchid, Persian red. Rich and radiant! Not only does the collection feature color, but also prints including florals, gingham, polka dots, and fleur de lis. I particularly like the incorporation of turquoise and coral (known in the collection as Blue Radiance and Dubarry Melon) which reflects the trends on the runway. And no look is complete without the corresponding pieces featured in the Afterwear collection. Absolutely delightful!

We are finally getting around to adding the new pieces from The Lake & Stars to our online store and blog! The pictures in this post represent 2 new groups; Truce and Trick Date.
Basically the Truce pieces are those with the mesh & net strips across the front of the tops. The Trick Date pieces are those with the contrast ribbon trim on the tops (pink with orange ribbon, navy blue with green ribbon). Both groups are just lovely and true to The Lake & Stars style, which is an assortment of modern, feminine and fashion-forward designs.
We actually have the entire collection in stock, but haven't quite gotten everything online as of this moment (should be soon!)...let us know if there's something you're wanting.
