Abstract:

Investigating an important field within translation studies, Community Translation addresses the specific context, characteristics and needs of translation in and for communities. Traditional classifications in the fields of discourse and genre are of limited use to the field of translation studies, as they overlook the social functions of translation. Instead, this book argues for a classification that cuts across traditional lines, based on the social dimensions of translation and the relationships between text producers and audiences.

Community Translation discusses the different types of texts produced by public authorities, services and individuals for communities that need to be translated into minority languages, and the socio-cultural issues that surround them. In this way, this book demonstrates the vital role that community translation plays in ensuring communication with all citizens and in the empowerment of minority language speakers by giving them access to information, enabling them to participate fully in society.

Abstract:

This book is written in order to help undergraduate students and trainee teachers to reflect on certain topics and key issues related to second language acquisition. Despite the proliferation of books and introductory courses in second language acquisition, most of these books very often provide a very complex account of theoretical views in second language acquisition and sometimes fail to emphasise the crucial interplay between how people learn languages and what it is the most effective way to teach languages.

Abstract:

Over the last two decades, reading groups have become increasingly popular in the UK and the USA. More and more people seem to be interested in sharing their reading experiences and hearing other readers discuss their views on books, whether this is online, through the mass media, or in face-to-face contexts.

In light of this explosion in popularity of reading groups, this ethnographic study focuses on several reading groups based across a variety of settings: public libraries, public houses and in readers' homes. A range of methods are used to investigate the practices of the individual readers and the groups, including participant observation, interviews, and audio-recordings of meetings.

Reading groups are found to be highly ritualized and potentially competitive places in which matters of identity and taste are often at stake. The groups studied are conceptualized as communities of practice, and the literary interpretations and evaluations offered within each group are shown to be a product of shared norms established by this group.

Durante los días 3, 4 y 5 de septiembre de 2014 se celebró en la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad de Murcia la vigesimonovena edición del Congreso Internacional de la Asociación de Jóvenes Lingüistas. Este evento, que cada año tiene lugar en una ciudad española con el objetivo de ofrecer un punto de encuentro a estudiantes que están empezando su carrera investigadora en el campo de la Lingüística, logró reunir en estas jornadas alrededor de unas ciento cincuenta personas, entre ponentes y asistentes, una cifra elevada que da muestra de la enorme relevancia que ha adquirido este congreso entre la joven comunidad científica de todo el mundo, pues contamos con la presencia de investigadores de muy diferentes nacionalidades.

Al igual que en ediciones pasadas, el objetivo que movió a los participantes a trasladarse, esta vez, hasta tierras murcianas fue intercambiar conocimientos y ampliarlos con estudiantes aún no doctorados de otras universidades que comparten con ellos su pasión por el estudio del lenguaje.

El XXIX Congreso de la AJL tuvo la suerte de acoger contribuciones de enorme calidad y de disciplinas lingüísticas muy variadas: trabajos sobre Adquisición y enseñanza de la lengua, Sociolingüística, Dialectología, Historia de la Lengua Española, Traducción, Gramática, Pragmática y Lingüística Cognitiva.

Esta publicación pretende ser un reflejo fiel del alto nivel de las presentaciones que tuvimos el honor de presenciar durante la celebración del congreso. Esperamos que con esta publicación se divulgue el conocimiento creado por los jóvenes lingüistas en torno a las distintas áreas de la Lingüística y que sirva como impulsor de nuevas ideas en este vasto campo.

El XXIX Congreso de la AJL tuvo la suerte de acoger contribuciones de enorme
calidad y de disciplinas lingüísticas muy variadas: trabajos sobre Adquisición
y enseñanza de la lengua, Sociolingüística, Dialectología, Historia de la
Lengua Española, Traducción, Gramática, Pragmática y Lingüística Cognitiva.

Esta publicación pretende ser un reflejo fiel del alto nivel de las

Abstract:

For ninety per cent of our history, humans have lived as 'hunters and
gatherers', and for most of this time as talking individuals. No direct
evidence for the origin and evolution of language exists; we do not even know
if early humans had language, either spoken or signed. Taking an
anthropological perspective, Alan Barnard acknowledges this difficulty and
argues that we can nevertheless infer a great deal about our linguistic past
from what is around us in the present. Hunter-gatherers still inhabit much of
the world, and in sufficient number to enable us to study the ways in which
they speak, the many languages they use, and what they use them for. Barnard
investigates the lives of hunter-gatherers by understanding them in their own

Throughout much of the history of linguistics, grammaticality judgments – intuitions about the well-formedness of sentences – have constituted most of the empirical base against which theoretical hypothesis have been tested.

Although such judgments often rest on subtle intuitions, there is no systematic methodology for eliciting them, and their apparent instability and unreliability have led many to conclude that they should be abandoned as a source of data.

Carson T. Schütze presents here a detailed critical overview of the vast literature on the nature and utility of grammaticality judgments and other linguistic intuitions, and the ways they have been used in linguistic research. He shows how variation in the judgment process can arise from factors such as biological, cognitive, and social differences among subjects, the particular elicitation method used, and extraneous features of the materials being judged. He then assesses the status of judgments as reliable indicators of a speaker's grammar.

Integrating substantive and methodological findings, Schütze proposes a model in which grammaticality judgments result from interaction of linguistic competence with general cognitive processes. He argues that this model provides the underpinning for empirical arguments to show that once extragrammatical variance is factored out, universal grammar succumbs to a simpler, more elegant analysis than judgment data initially lead us to expect. Finally, Schütze offers numerous practical suggestions on how to collect better and more useful data. The result is a work of vital importance that will be required reading for linguists, cognitive psychologists, and philosophers of language alike.

Today, there is a need to develop natural language processing (NLP) systems from deeper linguistic approaches. Although there are many NLP applications which can work without taking into account any linguistic theory, this type of system can only be described as “deceptively intelligent”. Abstract:

This book investigates the poetics of three of the most internationally renowned contemporary Chinese poets – Bei Dao, Yang Lian and Duoduo – who were all exiled from China after the 1989 Tiananmen student movement. Their poetry was later to be labelled ‘Misty poetry’ (Menglongshi). Emphasising polyvalent imagery and irregular syntax, Misty poetry engenders a multiplicity of meanings, often leading to interpretational indeterminacy. This book examines three aspects of the ‘Mistiness’ of the poets’ oeuvre: the socio-historic background where Misty poets live and write; imagery; and linguistic elements.

After first identifying the roots of Mistiness, this book identifies imagistic and linguistic clues in order to construct a hermeneutical system that examines the irregularities of the Misty poetics and appreciates the polysemy of the poets’ works. Stylometry is used to analyse image frequency and its significance in a stylistic manner, and a semiotic approach is then systematically applied to analyse the poets’ highly irregular images, syntax and the different effects of their poems’ obscurity. Through these approaches that unveil the poems’ evocativeness, the irregularity of the poetry’s Mistiness is established as its most powerful linguistic and imagistic aspect.

The book then places the three poets’ different misty characteristics into contrast: Bei Dao’s twisted imagery and elliptical syntax, Yang’s imagery in a classically-inspired syntax, and Duoduo’s integration of images into a rhythmic syntax. While the poets’ progressions from pre- to post-exile poetics suggest the potential of a non-nationally specific, or borderless poetics, their seemingly irregular poetic Mistiness is the most powerful trait of Misty poetry for evoking its system of multifaceted significations and alternative aesthetics.

Abstract:

Traditional dialects have been encroached upon by the increasing mobility of their speakers and by the onslaught of national languages in education and mass media.

Typically, older dialects are “leveling” to become more like national languages. This is regrettable when the last articulate traces of a culture are lost, but it also promotes a complex dynamics of interaction as speakers shift from dialect to standard and to intermediate compromises between the two in their forms of speech. Varieties of speech thus live on in modern communities, where they still function to mark provenance, but increasingly cultural and social provenance as opposed to pure geography. They arise at times from the need to function throughout the different groups in society, but they also may have roots in immigrants’ speech, and just as certainly from the ineluctable dynamics of groups wishing to express their identity to themselves and to the world.

The future of dialects is a selection of the papers presented at Methods in Dialectology XV, held in Groningen, the Netherlands, 11-15 August 2014. While the focus is on methodology, the volume also includes specialized studies on varieties of Catalan, Breton, Croatian, (Belgian) Dutch, English (in the US, the UK and in Japan), German (including Swiss German), Italian (including Tyrolean Italian), Japanese, and Spanish as well as on heritage languages in Canada.

Die Interkulturelle Kommunikative Kompetenz (IKK) ist inzwischen fest im Fremdsprachenunterricht verankert. Überraschenderweise liegen in Deutschland jedoch kaum empirisch überprüfte Erkenntnisse zu der Entwicklung von IKK im Englischunterricht der Grundschule vor.

Die vorliegende Studie schließt diese Lücke. Über empirisch überprüfte Aufgabenmerkmale wird IKK für den Englischunterricht der Grundschule konzeptualisiert. Dabei werden in einem qualitativen Forschungsdesign Aufgaben im Rahmen eines Aktionsforschungsansatzes entwickelt, empirisch erprobt und deren interkulturell kommunikatives Potenzial bewertet.

Abstract:

This book is concerned with the issue of predication as the central theme of all linguistic theories. In some languages ‘verbs’ are not the only predicative elements. Other word categories have the same capability. This book focuses on the constructions where a predicative adjective or preposition fuse with a ‘bleached verb’ as the impoverished form of the verbal element to form what is called a complex predicate or ‘nuclear juncture’ (NJ.). The framework adopted here is Role and Reference Grammar (RRG) Theory (Van Valin 2005).

These complex predicates in Persian have received little attention in literature and the few studies carried out have not provided a detailed analysis of these nuclear junctures. Complex Predicates in Modern Persian scrutinizes the types of adjectives/prepositions used in these constructions and the syntax-semantics interface using the data in Persian, one of the oldest Indo-European languages.

Abstract:

Parameters of linguistic variation were originally conceived, within the chomskyan Principles and Parameters Theory, as UG-determined options that were associated with grammatical principles and had a rich deductive structure. This characterization of parametric differences among languages has changed significantly over the years, especially so with the advent of Minimalism.

This book collects a representative sample of current generative research on the status, origin and size of parameters. Often taking diverging views, the papers in the volume address some or all of the main debated topics in parametric syntax: i.e. are parameters provided by UG, or do they constitute emergent properties arising from points of underspecification?; in which component(s) of the language faculty are parameters to be found?; do clustering effects actually hold across languages?; do macroparameters exist alongside microparameters?; are there parameter hierarchies?; which is the origin and role of parameters in the process of language acquisition?

The volume is organized into two parts. Part I ("The nature of variation and parameters") brings together studies whose main goal is to discuss general issues related to parameters (or variation more generally). Part II ("Parameters in the analysis of language variation: case studies") includes a number of works that deal with the empirical basis and proper formulation of well-known particular parameters: the Null Subject Parameter, the NP/DP Parameter, the Compounding Parameter, the Wh-Parameter and the Analyticity Parameter.
