Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Syntax; Typology

Language Family(ies): Slavic Subgroup

Meeting Description:

The South Slavic languages - Slovene, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Bulgarian, and Macedonian - constitute a quite heterogeneous group of languages. On the one hand, they form a dialect continuum, while on the other hand, they are part of different areal convergence zones. The intersection of dialectal and areal affiliation is further complicated by the individual standardisation histories, which may have led to differentiations on the level of the standard languages that are not necessarily observed for the spoken varieties and dialects. This makes the investigation of non-standard and historical data an urgent requirement.

One case in point illustrating this complex situation is clausal complementation (CC). The linguistic complexity of South Slavic has been impeding studies covering the unity and diversity of the CC strategies encountered for these languages in their entirety. Moreover, CC itself is still an under-defined notion. Crucially, discussing CC in South Slavic from various points of view, applying different theoretical approaches and methods of investigation, as shall be done by the contributions to this conference, necessitates a clear elaboration of the key notions used in the individual analyses.

Against this background, the conference aims at gaining a detailed picture of the diverse patterns of CC in South Slavic by bringing together researchers which focus on different aspects of this topic. Striving to arrive at a clearer concept of CC, the conference also contributes to linguistic concept formation, which will enhance further collaborative investigations. In addition, the workshop intends to explore the possibilities of creating a unified platform of corpora and similar kinds of data necessary for empirical research in this domain.

Program:

Thursday, March 17 2016

14.00-14.40
Barbara Sonnenhauser (Zurich) & Björn Wiemer (Mainz):
Introduction: the many facets of clausal complementation

Approaching the nature of complementation

14.45-15.15
Bojan Belić (Seattle):
Finite infinity: controllers and choice of clausal complements (in Serbian)

15.20-15.50
Björn Hansen (Regensburg) & Zrinka Kolaković (Regensburg):
Clitic climbing in complement taking predicates in Serbian and Croatian: a study on semantic clause integration

15.50-16.20 Coffee break

16.20-16.50
Liljana Mitkovska (Skopje) & Eleni Bužarovska (Skopje):
Clausal complementation of visual perception verbs in Balkan Slavic: inherited and contact-induced features

16.55-17.25
Ivana Vrdoljak (Mainz):
Factivity status of complements in Croatian/Serbian

17.25-17.45
Discussion

Friday, March 18 2016

Resources

09.45-10.15
Taras Zakharko (Zurich):
Annotating semantics of complementisers in corpora: the case of interpretative backgrounds

10.20-10.50
Tanja Samardžić (Zurich):
The 'Regional data initiative': resources of Croatian and Serbian

10.50-11.20 Coffee break

11.20-11.50
Teodora Vuković (Belgrade):
Towards the Torlak vernacular corpus

11.55-12.25
Hanne Eckhoff (Tromsö):
The history of Slavic complementation: data and pitfalls

12.25-12.45
Discussion

12.45-14.15 Lunch

Complementation in space

14.15-14.45
Pino Marco Pizzo (Mainz):
On the variability of syntactic structures from the Freising manuscripts to the East-Southslavic classical literary canon. This concerns especially historical LRLs for which authentic digitized material is hardly available. Since for most historical languages data is sparse one may consider Wikipedia and related projects (on Old English, Gothic, Old Church Slavonic, Latin etc.) to overcome data sparseness. This approach investigates to what extent such data can be useful for modeling historical languages. The LRL workshop addresses scholars working on these and related topics using LRL corpora for NLP of low-resourced languages.

Program Commitee:

Prof. Dr. Tara Andrews
Prof. Dr. Chris Biemann
Dr. Cristopher Brown
Dr. Marco Büchler
Prof. Dr. Christian Chiarcos
Prof. Dr. Stefanie Dipper
Dr. Steffen Eger
Prof. Dr. Christiane Fellbaum
Prof. Dr. Kurt Gärtner
Prof. Dr. Jolanta Gelumbeckaitė
Prof. Dr. Dafydd Gibbon
Prof. Dr. Jost Gippert
Dr. Erla Hallsteinsdóttir
Prof. Dr. Gerhard Heyer
Armin Hoenen, M.A.
Prof. Dr. Brian Joseph
Prof. Dr. Caroline Macé
Prof. Dr. Alexander Mehler
Prof. Dr. Marco Passarotti
Prof. Dr. Andrea Rapp
Prof. Dr. Joachim Scharloth
Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schröder
Prof. Dr. Anders Søgaard

Keynote Speakers:

Prof. Dr. Anke Lüdeling

Program:

8:45-9:00
Welcoming reception

9:00-09:20
Speaker: Stefanie Dipper
Authors: Florian Petran, Thomas Klein, Stefanie Dipper and Marcel Bollmann
Title: REM: A reference corpus of Middle High German — corpus compilation, annotation, visualization and searching

09:20-09:40
Speaker: Roland Mittmann
Author: Roland Mittmann
Title: Automatisierter Abgleich des Lautstandes althochdeutscher Wörter

09:40-10:00
Speaker:
Author: Lars Döhling, Manuel Burghardt and Christian Wolff
Title: Introducing PaLaFra – A Project on the Creation and Analysis of an Electronic Corpus of Historical Texts of Old French and Late Latin

10:00-10:30 Coffee Break

10:30-10:50
Speaker: Marija Lazar
Author: Marija Lazar
Title: Crossing “Bridges”: Modelling Inter-Slavic Language Continua in the Corpora of Medieval Legal Texts

10:50-11:10
Speaker: Oleg Borisenko
Author: Julia Normanskaja and Oleg Borisenko
Title: «The analysis of new archival and field data on the Samoyed languages»

11:10-11:30
Speaker: Patrick Brendon Pearson
Authors: Patrick Brendon Pearson, Kristian Heal and Deryle W. The aim is to examine automatic methods for correcting errors produced by an unknown machine translation (MT) system. This has to be done by exploiting knowledge acquired from human post-edits, which are provided as training material.

This year the task focuses on the Information Technology (IT) domain, in which English source sentences have been translated into German by an unknown MT system and then manually post-edited by professional translators. At training stage, the collected human post-edits have to be used to learn correction rules for the APE systems. At test stage they will be used for system evaluation with automatic metrics (TER and BLEU).

[Linguist List announcement 27.928]

Registration is now open via the web-site (http://nottinghamcorpusconference2016.weebly.com/), and a provisional programme is available on the site as well. The registration deadline is February 29.

--

The emergence of diachronic corpus linguistics in the last two decades has allowed us unprecedented access to data in the study of past stages of language and language change. Major areas of interest that have emerged in this field include the study of genre (broadly conceived) as a major factor affecting language variation and change, as well as the notion of genre as a locus of change. In addition, there has been great interest in how specific genres have (or have not) changed over time.

This international conference will bring together scholars examining the role of genre in language change, and the use of diachronic corpora to study such developments in any language.

The following have kindly agreed to give plenary lectures:

Eric Atwell (The University of Leeds)
Thomas Gloning (The University of Gießen)
Bethany Gray (Iowa State University)
Irma Taavitsainen (The University of Helsinki)

Scientific Committee:

Dawn Archer (The University of Central Lancashire)
David Denison (The University of Manchester)
Martin Durrell (The University of Manchester)
Susan Fitzmaurice (The University of Sheffield)
William Kretzschmar (The University of Georgia / The University of Glasgow)
Mark Lauersdorf (The University of Kentucky)
Anke Lüdeling (Humboldt University, Berlin)
Tony McEnery (The University of Lancaster)
Terttu Nevalainen (The University of Helsinki)

[Linguist List announcement 27.821]

Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; Computational Linguistics; Genetic Classification; Language Documentation; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Meeting Description:

Putting Fieldwork on Indigenous Languages to New Uses is a São Paulo School on Advanced Sciences, supported by the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP), and will be held from March 21 to April 6, at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.

Flight tickets will be provided to the selected students.

The purpose of this school is twofold: (i) to introduce early career researchers to the latest developments in data collection and linguistic research on native languages, and (ii) to pave the way for new uses of linguistic fieldwork, with mutual benefits for both linguists and the indigenous populations. Drawing on the vast experience of the researchers of the several partner institutions in documentation, corpus linguistics and formal linguistic theory, we will present/discuss possibilities not previously pursued: extensive comparison across native languages to build taxonomies and phylogenetic models of transmission, oral corpora and a new objective and unbiased grammatical terminology, reflecting the speakers' original intuitions and potentially revealing truly universal building blocks of language and cognition. All these new tools should feed into literacy projects for the local communities, raising their own meta-linguistic and cultural awareness (in a non-intrusive way).

We expect students form several universities of Brazil, Argentina, Great-Britain, Australia and United States to attend, resulting in about 100 students.

Courses:
Languages and cultures of Brazil
Introduction to phylogetic methods in Linguistics
How to work on digital oral corpora syntactic annotation Corpus Ling/Brazil
Experimental and computational methods in Phonology and Morphology
Music, Language, and Documentation in Australia
Experimenting semantics, number and language

Visit the website for details.

Note that Myfany Turpin's class has been cancelled.

[Linguist List announcement 27.798]
