Description:

The Speech Team of the Laboratoire Psychologie de la Perception (LPP) in Paris invites applications for PhD position in developmental psychology/cognitive neuropsychology/linguistics within the framework of the LABEX Empirical Foundations of Linguistics.

The objective of the research project is to study cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms of attention associated with word learning and word recognition in monolingual French learning and bilingual young children. Both eye-tracking and event-related potential (ERP) techniques will be used in the project. The research will be conducted at the LPP under the supervision of Dr. Pia Rämä.

The position is available for 36 months starting September 2016. Salary will be in accordance with the French PhD regulations (“contrat doctoral”).

Candidates should have a background in psychology, cognitive science, neuropsychology, linguistics, or related fields. Other requirements include excellent communication skills, experience with experimental methods and statistical analyses, and willingness to learn new techniques. Previous experience in collecting and analysing developmental data is desirable. The working languages are French and English. Applicants from outside France are encouraged to apply, but some knowledge of French is required in order to be able to conduct the experimental work.

Im Fachbereich „Germanistische Linguistik“ der Universität des Saarlandes ist eine Promotionsstelle (wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in zu 50% nach TV-L) zum 01.04.2016 neu zu besetzen.

Die wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterstelle (50%) ist mit einem Lehrdeputat von 2 SWS verbunden und wird nach TVL 13 in der entsprechenden Erfahrungsstufe vergütet. Das (erforderliche) Promotionsvorhaben soll in einem der Bereiche der (formalen) Semantik/Pragmatik oder alternativ in der (semantisch/pragmatisch ausgerichteten) Psycholinguistik (Sprachverarbeitung, L1-Erwerb) liegen.

Zwingende Einstellungsvoraussetzung ist ein abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium im Bereich der Germanistik, der Germanistischen Linguistik, der Allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft oder der Psycholinguistik.

Bewerberinnen / Bewerber mit folgenden Qualifikationsmerkmalen werden bevorzugt:
– nachgewiesene Kompetenz in den Bereichen der formalen Semantik oder Pragmatik
– oder alternativ nachgewiesene Kompetenz in der experimentellen Psycholinguistik
– Lehrerfahrung im Bereich der Germanistischen Linguistik

– Erfahrung in der akademischen Selbstverwaltung oder in der Wissenschaftsorganisation

Die Vertragslaufzeit ist zunächst auf 3 Jahre befristet. Eine befristete Verlängerung im Rahmen der Vorgaben des WissZeitVG ist grundsätzlich möglich. Zwingende Voraussetzung für eine Anstellung ist ein gemäß der Promotionsordnung der Fakultät 4 der Universität des Saarlandes für die Promotion qualifizierender Studienabschluss im Bereich der Germanistik / Germanistischen Linguistik, der Allgemeinen Sprachwissenschaft oder der Psycholinguistik.

In the Faculty of Humanities the Linguistics Department has within the newly installed Research Unit „Questions at the Interfaces“ 1 Doctoral Research Positions in Linguistics (Salary Scale 13 TV-L/65 %) available.

The start date is 1 April 2016. The position is available for three years. A later starting date is negotiable.

Applications are invited for a 3-year 65% (doctoral) research position in the newly established Research Unit ''Questions at the Interfaces (QI)''. The research unit runs from April 1, 2016 to March 31st, 2019 and is dedicated to investigating question formation, with a particular emphasis on non-canonical questions (e.g., rhetorical, echo, self-addressed, suggestive). This Research Unit (RU) combines expertise from theoretical, computational and experimental linguistics as well as visual analytics to study how different components of grammar (morphology, syntax, phonology) interface with one another to signal a particular meaning. The linguistic department at the University of Konstanz offers a lively and internationally well-connected research environment where students are immediately integrated in scholarly life and research at all levels. The research unit offers PhD students the opportunity to discuss their topics with fellow students who work on similar issues; we also have funding for PhD students to attend international workshops and conferences.

Subproject description: The project P7 ''The Prosody-Syntax Interface of Polar Questions: Evidence from German and English First Language Acquisition'' focuses on the syntax-prosody interface from the point of view of first language acquisition. The aim of the project is to experimentally examine how sentence intonation and sentence structure develop and interact in 3- to 5-year-old German and English speaking children’s speech production and perception. Project tasks involve preparation, implementation and analysis of production and perception experiments as well as the publication of results at international conferences and in relevant journals. The experiments with the English-speaking children are to be conducted in Great Britain.

Requirements: Applicants should have a M.A. degree (or equivalent) in linguistics and should specialize in first language acquisition, phonetics and/or syntax. We also welcome experience in working with children, experience with experimental linguistics, solid knowledge of statistics and acoustic analysis software (PRAAT), and excellent proficiency in English and German. Special personal skills like patience, assertiveness, flexibility and the ability to work under pressure are also welcome. Experience with databases in the field of experimental methods or first language acquisition (e.g., CHILDES) is a plus.

PhD scholarships are being offered across twelve University Research Centres which focus on areas of excellence and quality as independently confirmed by the REF 2014.
