Maybe catching up ...

I may be kidding myself, but I am beginning to get the feeling that I am catching-up!

Some big progress on getting the "core programs" and global type inserts into web-pages, is beginning to come together.

All green-dot hyperlinks now go to http://sql3.info/00/password.asp and from there is using the sql database magnetbnr for storage of UserName/Password combinations to link a person to their company and provide admin capability.

Magnet sites moved, OLR nearly done.

This month after the dust clears, should see me with an opportunity to work a shorter work-week; I expect to slow down to about 60 hours a week and enjoy my time!

OLR (Our Little Roses) database and datasystems project is about 80% completed and the tough stuff is behind me. Still a lot of reports and listings to create, but that part is easy compared to the core database programs.

With MagNet the work still is there; a lot of web-sites that should be upgraded and they will be a "one at a time", do it on a reasonable schedule.

At this point I am going to be moving to drum up new business. The concept is simple; free development with a one-year hosting payment of $300. At $25 a month and the free design and creation this is really a bargain. Some of my better sites would normally cost a customer $2,000 to $3,000 just for the design and creation. This way it is free! You pay for the hosting and maintenance and that is it.

Resuming work on OLR project

Kristen is due to return from China in the next couple of days and we will be focusing on the lay-out and functionality of OLR's database admin pages.

The web-site will be independent of OLR's regular web-site which is primarily informational and marketing oriented. This site will be for operating the database and the details involved using db content in a business.

Final Stages of MagNet transfer

We are fast approaching a conclusion to the transfer of web-sites from MagNet1 servers to the Link37 hosting environment on sql3.
The largest remaining task is to relocate the Realtor's pages, as a new approach is needed for serving photos and listing property details. The work is in testing stage now and should be completed and implemented in the next ten days.

Real Estate Programs ...

The last couple of weeks been working on a "core" program system for local Realtors where web-site listing can easily be updated by putting property photos into Picasa, adding descriptions and then uploading (automatically) to Google's Picasa servers. A great online web-album then becomes part of proprietary software that interconnects with the web-site and an sql database with listing details.

This whole system is very easy to use, yet produces a very polished presentation to the viewer of the Realtor's web-site when they are browsing real estate listings.

NWHHC completed

A very nice site has been completed for MagNet1's client Houston Heart Center in Houston, Texas. This site is a very comprehensive site serving cardiac patients for Houston's top cardiac team.

Serious work is underway with Southern Grace in the Madison County area. This is a complex site being relocated from MagNet1.net server to sql3 servers and is being moved "as is" with potential upgrade in the near future. The site must be converted from ColdFusion to Microsoft ODBM services on the Access db. About two days required to complete this, then on to about a half-dozen Realtor sites that need the ColdFusion to asp rewrite.

Then the move is done!

Admin Page now password protected

Today the Admin Page, universally on all web-sites ... became password protected.
Your UserName and Password combination have been assigned to you for the purpose of gaining access to the Admin Page. This prevents snooping hackers from stumbling onto your Top-Left-Corner hotspot on the home page. Now, they must get past both a unique username and a password.

Within the next ten days or so, all access to the UserName/Password input will also be moved to a secure server, which means we will be using 128-bit encryption on transmission to and from you for the log-in process. When this occurs you will note the beginning of the URL will change from http:// to https://

Each Link37 user (and all MagNet1 users with Link37 features) will have their username and password communicated to them by telephone.

More users going Interactive!

Getting web-page content current and keeping that way isn't easy, but more of our clients are doing it with the new interactive features we have been bringing online.

One thing many people haven't done, is to review the link to Bob Parson's "insights into what makes a good web-site" ... he has really done a great job a short, to-the-point video that every business owner with a web site should see.

More sites going Interactive!

Thanks to the efforts by Dan Elliott and MagNet1, there are quite a few web-site jobs in the works. Link37 can certainly use the work. As dial-up Internet dies off, the new web-site business is welcome work.

As Google continues their constant output of new products and enhancements to their older ones, there are so many new ways to create interactive and dynamic web-content. Most older people aren't "plugged-in" to the new (actually not too new, at least five years in the making) Social Networking phenomena and reluctant to get too close to it. But believe me, the vendors are not missing a beat by working with those that want good solid business reasons for "tapping in". More on this subject when I have more time.

For now, look over the offerings that we have at Link37 and see how we might help you to put your business out front and you be able to keep it current.

Doing a "re-focus"

First we changed from GemLink to Link37; now we are announcing our change of focus for the company. Although we will continue to operate the "old" GemLink business of dial-up Internet connections. But unfortunate for our business the number of dial-up customers has dropped from a high of over 2,200 customers in late 2001, to less than 200 in 2012, it is no longer a business with much of a future. None-the-less, GemLink has treated us so well with loyal customers over the years, and now as it is dying off I have no intention of dropping the business nor reducing the service to our dial-up clients.

In addition to the major drop-off of dial-up, there is a new interest and build-up of web-site business. We are becoming very busy and now hosting a large number of web-sites for businesses ... many outside Virginia, so we are becoming less centered in the Orange/Louisa/Madison/Albemarle Counties area and more "spread-out".

But what difference does it make?

The Internet, cell-phones, VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and so many more technology advances, the planet is our neighborhood!

So don't be offended if I don't answer the phone immediately; I will definately return your call, but it may be a few minutes or a few hours. I am likely to be traveling, or busy working on a web-site. Interupting coding when you are in the midst of complex programming is not a good idea. But I do get an immediate email from my voice-mail phone system that pops up on my screen. I can even click an icon and hear the message you left. I just try hard to optimize my efforts and that doesn't happen when you are being interupted.

Hope you all find a good reason to do business with Link37, or to continue doing business with us. As I travel doing the Historic/Family Research business or the Bull Riding Association business ... I always take my Internet business with me and still manage to work on it several hours a day.

Picasa Web-Albums

The final testing is nearly completed for using Picasa online web-albums as a basis for client "Content Management System" for pages on their web-sites.

Because Picasa is free, well-documented and supported, it is relatively easy to use the decoded rss feed to put content on a web-page. We have a preference for asp and javascript and have created programs to take the web-album from Picasa's online system and put it on a dynamic web-page.

Meaning ... change the web-album on your own computer, and the web-site on our servers will immediately show the change on the next call to the web-server for that page.
