Linked Notes 2.2 is now available on our download page. Here are a few of the highlights of this release.

Added a New Page menu option to index
Automatic program restart after data path change

Skip the login if no username / password identities are configured
Bug Fix: Unhandled exception when trying to apply font styles

Linked Notes software is a personal Wiki. It provides basic note taking features. The software accommodates quick and easy organization of information into pages. Pages can be easily linked by name and organized using the page index.

Linked Notes 2.0 is Released

Linked Notes 2.0 is now available on our download page. Here are a few of the highlights of this release.

A default font for new pages can be specified on the settings form
New menu options to expand all and collapse all outline sections
The F2 key will bring up the properties form
New pages are inserted as children of the current page in the outline
Added a serial number to the software license form
Enhanced licensing to accommodate a premium upgrade trial period
Fixed: Handle corrupted XML page files
Fixed: Properly encode & in the outline for page names

The Linked Notes Free Edition (formerly called Basic Edition) is free for everyone to use for as long as you like. The Linked Notes Premium Edition (formerly called Pro Edition) includes additional features. You may upgrade to the Premium Edition for a nominal charge. Is U3 Dead?

SanDisk reports the following on its website "The U3 technology has reached end of life. SanDisk began phasing out support for U3 Technology in late 2009."

Here are a couple of articles with more background on the quiet demise of U3.

You may have noticed we removed the U3 version from our download page. We held on as long as possible waiting for Microsoft and SanDisk to come up with a suitable replacement. However, in preparation for our upcoming Linked Notes 2.0 release, we have officially dropped support for the U3 version of Linked Notes.

For those who run Linked Notes from a USB storage device, and enjoy the portable nature of our note taking application. We will continue to release a PortableApps.com version in the future.

Auto-Save and Improved Performance

Linked Notes 1.4 is available now on our download page. Here are the highlights of this release…

Upgraded to .NET 3.5 for improved performance
Added a new feature to Paste text only
Any failure to save the index is now reported to the user
Errors will be logged to the data file directory for support purposes
Added “Check for Update” menu item with a download option
Added auto save on idle timeout and eliminated the Save button

The .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 delivers significant performance improvement for desktop applications such as Linked Notes. This release of the framework has been available for some time now. If you have not installed it yet, you may download it from Microsoft.

The auto-save functionality was added to make sure changes to your notes are saved especially if you walk away from the computer. Notes were always saved automatically upon exiting the application or navigating to another note page. Since the save menu item and toolbar button were redundant, they have been removed.

Please consider upgrading to our Pro Edition of the software. More feature are planned for the future, and we welcome your comment and suggestions.

Keep Important Facts Close at Hand

How many times do you need to reprogram your Universal Television Remote? Well, If you are like me, it happens about once or twice a year. That is usually how long the batteries last. Each time I find myself searching the Internet for the steps necessary to make the universal remote work with my particular television.

Here is a Linked Notes usage tip… When you find the instructions for programming your TV remote, simply copy and paste them into a new note page. I usually paste the URL too just in case I need to revisit the source of the information. You can customize the steps as necessary. Next time you need it, simply search Linked Notes first.

Screen Capture Tool Added to Linked Notes Pro Edition

Screen Capture Tool (Pro Edition)

The Screen Capture Tool is a powerful new feature we added to Linked Notes Pro Edition. It allows you to select a region or area of your computer screen for inclusion as an image in your current note page. Pictures are worth a thousand words, or so I have been told. Suppose I want to include a picture of David Allen’s book on Getting Things Done in my page on GTD. I search Amazon.com for a picture of the book cover.

Then, I press the Screen Capture Toolbar icon in Linked Notes Pro…

Draw a box around the book cover, and it is inserted into the page automatically.

Use Live Mesh to Sync Linked Notes between Work and Home

Have you ever wanted to keep notes synchronized between multiple computers? Well, Live Mesh maybe just what you are looking for. With Live Mesh you have the ability to share and synchronize files with different computers and devices. As an example, you might have shopping lists, to do lists, reminders, project notes, class notes, etc. on your laptop. Live Mesh can help you keep those notes up to date on your work computer and home computer.

Of course, a USB flash drive can be used to carry your notes from computer to computer. Linked Notes is compatible with U3 and PortableApps.com. That works great, and does not require an internet connection. On the other hand, Live Mesh will facilitate the synchronization for you in the background and automatically.

Here is a brief summary of how to setup Linked Notes to run in a Mesh folder. If your notes contain private or sensitive information, I suggest you encrypt those note pages first. Although Live Mesh uses SSL, encrypting your private notes is an important safeguard against accidental disclosure out in the cloud.

Visit http://www.mesh.com, and sign in with your Windows Live Id.

Click on the Add Device icon to setup one of your computers. This will download the Live Mesh client software.

Using your file explorer, navigate to your Linked Notes data folder. By default, the data folder will be located in c:\ProgramData on Vista and Windows 7, and c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data in Windows XP. Right-click on the LinkedNotes folder and select Add Folder to Live Mesh.

As an aside, here is a brief description of what is in the Linked Notes data folder…

Files with the extension of .lnp are the note page files. These are xml files, and may or may not contain encrypted data.
users.ini is encrypted user information. Without this file, encrypted note pages can not be recovered.
settings.ini contains program settings.
LinkedNotes.exe.lic contains software license information
index.xml is your page index

Any changes to your note pages will now propagate to the Live Mesh remote desktop. All you need to do now is add another computer to your Mesh ring. When you add another computer, just map this LinkedNotes mesh folder to the same location as on the original computer. The Linked Notes application will need to be installed on both computers.
