I’ve just read an article on some research from Chicago University’s Booth Business School that suggest that tweeting may be harder to resist than cigarettes and alcohol but there are still plenty of people who have never seen the value of Twitter or understood why any of us would want to announce things to the world.

Tweeters themselves admit only 36% of the tweets they receive are of any interest, approximately 25% are actively disliked and the rest are instantly forgotten. So, according to this US report, it seems that 130million tweets a day are simply not worth reading.

Here are some tips from US researchers, who have scanned 1,500 Twitter users to deliver their top ideas for effective tweeting.

How to hit the tweet spot

Old news is no news. Twitter is fast moving so don’t repeat links that have been around for a long time.

Contribute to a story rather than just comment on it. Add your own opinion or don’t bother.

Keep it short. Even 140 characters can be too long for some people’s comments.

Limit the syntax. Do not overuse hashtags, @mentions and abbreviations.

Don’t tell everyone where you are the whole time.

Don’t just link to a blog or photos without givign readers a reason why they should click on it.

Don’t whine.

Be a tease. If you want someone to go on your website, don’t give away the whole story in a tweet.

Happy tweeting everyone!

And don’t forget to follow us at @linkshareukblog

The latest IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index has just been released showing that us Brits spent £68bn online in 2011, which is up 16% on 2010. The study predicts that online sales will slow to grow at a rate of 13% in 2012, and expects over £77bn to be spent online over the course of the year.

According to the Sales Index, online retailing now accounts for 17% of the total UK retail market; and this figure is only set to increase with the rise of mobile commerce and tablet adoption. This change in the consumer landscape is set to open up the world of opportunity for retailers, mobile vouchers (m-vouchers), location-based services and geo-targeting brought the online world to the high street in 2011 and we will see this grow more in 2012.

There’s no doubt that 2012 is going to be a really interesting one for e-commerce and online marketing. It is becoming outdated to see on and offline marketing activity as separate. Consumers go on a non-linear journey when making a decision what to buy and may touch the on and offline worlds several time in a variety of ways before making a decision to purchase an item.

Affiliate Marketing is well placed to breach this gap and personally I am really excited to see what is in store.

I will be keeping you posted with research and results as they appear over the coming months.

There’s always a lot of chatter about data feeds. They’re tough to keep up-to-date and often Publishers need an easy way to customise feeds for higher conversion. At LinkShare we’re striving to find ways help Advertisers and Publishers optimise the data feeds available to them and to provide shoppers with a more targeted shopping experience.

The good news is that many Advertisers in the LinkShare Network have partnered with GoldenFeeds to not only create the feed itself but also to enable Publishers to customise the feed for their audience. For example, if your site targets consumers searching for women’s clothing you will probably want to exclude men’s clothing from the feed. A simple wizard-like tool from GoldenFeeds allowed you to do this quickly and easily.

Just remember you first have to be partnered with the Advertiser in question. If you are partnered with any of the following Advertisers try creating a customised feed today!
