There are some free electronics software out there that we can try. This time I will focus on stripe board and breadboard software. Actually using stripe board is better for small component quantity and size project and using breadboard is easy for simulation. You can find some on Linux Mint Software Manager or others if you are using different distro. It is totally free open source software.

Let see two of the most popular electronics software for stripe board and breadboard.

Lets talk about Raspberry Pi now. I received it last week after make online order from Element14. First thing in my mine is to install Sabily theme on it. So we will got Sabily Pi.
At first we need to install recommended OS to it. It was Raspbian Wheezy. Successfully installed it. Then get Sabily theme deb file and install on it. I can install it without any problem.
So now I got zikr mouse pointer and Sabily Islamic theme on it.
I will write my experience about Raspberry Pi and Sabily Islamic theme in next title.

Zekr Audio Problem Solved

In this case also, you will unable to close your Zekr normally. It will result with force quit require.

To clear this problem, we need to install Oracle JDK 7.

To install please follow this step,

First of all add this repo,

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

then update,

sudo apt-get update

then install java,

sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

after completed you can check java version using this command,

java -version

the latest version for now is,

java version "1.7.0_21"

I hope now you can control you Zekr audio player volume up or down without error.

So, all you have to do is go to Ubuntu Software Center, then search for libwebkitgtk then select and install the libwebkitgtk-1.0-0. Example on the screenshot below.

Installation finished.

You will able to run Zekr without any problem.

I'm do this on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail gnome session. Hope this work too on previous version and other session.

Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail Installation

Ubuntu 13.04 with codename Raring Ringtail just released last week. In this post I want to share my experience install it on my PC system. If you interested, please download it from Ubuntu download page here. In this version Ubuntu only pack with Unity desktop environment. If you prefer other desktop environment like Gnome or KDE, you can install it later and have option to log in between them.

01. Live disc start.

02. Choose try or install.

03. Some information checked.

04. Installation type.

05. State your location.

06. Keyboard layout.

07. Information about yourself and some option.

08. Installation start.

09. Installation completed. Choose restart.

10. Default desktop environment.

11. Shut Down screen.

12. Login screen.

That's it. Completed my installation of Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail.

Installing Gnome 3.6 on Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal

If you prefer to use Gnome desktop environment on Ubuntu 12.10 you can install it after installation of Ubuntu completed. Ubuntu 12.10 will compatible with the new Gnome 3.6. Anyway, Gnome Classic is still there.

I'm still not comfortable using Unity, so I installed the latest gnome 3.6 and very excited to use it.

Lets share how to install gnome 3.6 on Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal.

01. Adding gnome3 ppa, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

02. "Enter" to continue.

03. Update it, sudo apt-get update

04. Start to install it, sudo apt-get install gnome-shell gnome-tweak-tool

05. "Y" to continue.

06. Enter (Ok).

07. Enter either (gdm) or (lightdm).

08. Gnome 3.6 installation completed.

09. Login screen of new Gnome 3.6. Gnome classic still there.

10. Gnome 3.6 applications screen.

11. Some setting can be change by using Tweak Tool.

Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal - Installations

Lets share my experience installing Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal on my small extra hard drive. As normal the procedure we need to download it from Ubuntu download site. Then make live CD or bootable usb drive for Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal. After that we can start to install it. Here some screenshot from my installation.

Sabily 12.04 LTS Ibn Al-Baytar Promotion Banner

Sabily team will continue to release Sabily 12.04 LTS Ibn Al-Baytar. It was decided and disseminated in Sabily mailing list on Launchpad. Most likely this December.

Therefore, I spend a little time to create banner ads to promote it.

Customize GRUB Boot Image

GRUB Customizer is the software that can be use to customize our own version of Linux distribution.Small software that have some setting that we need. You can get it on Ubuntu Software Center. Here some image and setting that we can change through it.

1. List configuration of distribution that we have.

2. General Setting. Boot timeout etc..

3. Appearance Setting. Here is the setting to change GRUB boot image, resolution and others. Beware of the resolution depend on your graphic card specification.

4. Advance Setting shows some shortcut setting.

Make Your Own Version Sabily 12.04 LTS

Its too long to wait for a new release of Sabily 12.04 LTS Ibn-AlBaytar. Previously Sabily Administrator decided to suspend it and just continue to 12.10 version. But since 12.04 is LTS version, they re discuss and decided to release 12.04 and maybe just skip for 12.10. Thats a little info about Sabily distribution.

Now I just want to discuss about making our own Sabily distribution base of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin. Since I'm not Sabily's developer, I just do this as my hobby. After complete, this will result as Sabily 12.04 LTS Al-Baytar of our own.

Lets start it.

First of all we need to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin. Either you make new installation or upgrade from your previous version 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. Since I like to work on Gnome environment, I had installed Gnome shell after my Ubuntu installation completed. So I just show my work from my Gnome desktop environment.

Second step after your Ubuntu installation completed, go to Ubuntu Software Center and search for Sabily item. Install all the Sabily related software that you see there one by one.

After all installation finished, re log in back your session. By using Advance Setting application, change the theme follow by this picture.

One more time to re log in your session to see the result. Should be your session now looks to Sabily theme.

Now you can install all Islamic software that you need by search it on Ubuntu Software Center. Try all the software that you install after re log in back.

Suppose now you get your own Sabily 12.04 LTS version with codename Ibn-AlBaytar.

Here is Eid Mubarak 1433 wallpaper that I create for use on this Eid. I mean for your desktop wallpaper. Insya'Allah. Also 468 x 60 banner that can be use on your mail, website and etc to promote Sabily. Just save it to your PC.

Adding Launch Icon On Gnome3 Panel

Answering a question about adding launch icon on gnome panel. Actually gnome3 did not allow to do it by default. For alternative, you can add your list of favorites applications to be put on the panel by using Frippery Panel Favorites. It can be installed online from Shell Extensions page.

After installations you can view or hide it from Advanced Settings plug in that included in gnome3 desktop environment. There also some Shell Extensions that maybe will get your attention.

Sabily Mint - Add Sabily 11.10 Uhud to Linux Mint 12 Lisa

Linux Mint is another popular distro that also base from Debian/Ubuntu. Using Gnome 3 for desktop environment, now it already in front of Ubuntu for the most popular distro. In this case it is possible to convert Linux Mint to Sabily same like I done before for Ubuntu. It is an advantage for Linux Mint user who interested to Sabily.

I named it Sabily Mint. Hopefully it will become one of my new project for Islamic distro in the future.
The procedure to change it just as we need to do in Ubuntu. It is a shortcut to get Sabily Mint without having to build or download its ISO separately.

01. Add Sabily's repository and update,

03. 'Y' to proceed,

04. Display manager to use. I choose 'gdm',

05. xscreensaver, 'n' to keep current version,

06. Completed. Restart to see the new Mint.

Make small icon on Dash

What about big icon on the shell dash? It size also can be modified to match with your application icon. To modified icon size on the dash, we need to modified dash.js file which write in Java. So, follow this step,

1. Open terminal and run this command, sudo gedit /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/js/ui/dash.js

2. Search for 'iconSizes' as you see on the screenshot. In this screenshot we can see it icon maximum size is 64. So an icon on the dash will be show in 64 size.

3. To make small size icon, just delete the bigger value. For example on this screenshot, I delete 64 and 48. So an icon on the 'dash' will be show in 32 size.

4. Save your setting.

5. Re login. Now you can see the icon is small in 32 size.

Change Icon Size in Gnome3 Shell

Did your eyes sick when see the icon on the Application shortcut on Gnome3 shell is too big? I feel it. Then I googling around and found the tutorial that we can edit some setting on the Gnome3 shell. By using 'gedit' software we need to edit some parameter in the 'gnome-shell.css' file. In this case we only need to change some value that related to the icon size. If you interested to try, you can follow instruction below,

1. Open terminal and run this command, sudo gedit /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/gnome-shell.css. If you can run it, check either gedit had installed on your system or not.

2. Search for 'icon-grid' it will bring you to the parameter. Note your standard parameter for icon-grid spacing, shell-grid-item-size and icon-size.

3. Change the value of the parameter like you see on the screenshot . Actually this is depend on your screen resolution. You can change the value suitable to your display setting. Save it by click on save button. Close 'gedit' to log out.

4. Log out then log in back to see the different.

There some item that we can play on the gnome-shell.css file. But do it on your own risk.

Install Sabily on USB Flash Drive

Now let try to install Sabily on your USB Flash Drive. This can make you able to try Sabily since USB Flash Drive is not so expensive to get it. Also can avoid from trying it onto your Hard Drive. It can cause lost of data from any mistake that occurred.

Let begin. I assumed that you already created Sabily Live DVD after you complete download it from Sabily download page or from elsewhere.

1. You need minimum storage of 4GB USB Flash Drive but I preferred 8GB is better. Make sure the USB Flash Drive is empty by format it.

2. Power off your system. For safety, disconnect all your Hard Drive from your system. Plug your USB Flash Drive to your system.

3. Power On your system then go to CMOS setup screen (please refer to your Motherboard/system manual how to get CMOS setup screen). Make sure your USB Flash Drive is detected.

4. Set your boot option priority to DVD Drive. Place your Sabily Live DVD to your DVD Drive. Save your setting and reboot.

5. Wait until Sabily start from Live DVD completely.

Open or double click on 'Install Sabily' icon to start installation.

6. Follow instruction on the screen until 'Install' screen appeared. You will see Sabily will be install on your USB Flash Drive. Proceed to 'Install Now' button.

7. Follow on screen option and wait until installation complete.

Restart your system and you should be able to run Sabily from your USB Flash Drive. The performance maybe slow due to USB transfer rate speed.

Now you can browse and get some experiences using Sabily a free Islamic operating system. Don't forget to share your experience with other people.

Sabily 11.10 Uhud - Install KDE Plasma Desktop

After convert from Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot to Sabily 11.10 Uhud, I try to add KDE Plasma Workspace onto Sabily. Alhamdulillah it work on my system. So now I have three option of desktop environment which is Gnome, Ubuntu Unity and KDE Plasma. This trial I think good for who interested in KDE environment and at the same time interested to Sabily too. You still able to use KDE in Sabily. For your information, some of Gnome application are not compatible with KDE Desktop but you can get and install the application that you need for KDE Desktop from Ubuntu Software Center.

I shared how to install KDE Plasma Desktop to Sabily distro.

01. Open Ubuntu Software Center then search for kde-standard.

02. Click on Install.

03. Installation completed.

04. Restart your system and choose KDE Plasma Workspace to log in.

05. To get Sabily wallpaper locate it at Root/usr/share/sabily-wallpaper/

06. To change icon theme to Sabily default go to System Settings.

07. Select on Application Appearance.

08. On Icon, select HumanME-Green.

There some other setting that you can browse inside it for example Mouse Cursor and etc on the System Settings.

Converting Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot to Sabily 11.10 Uhud

Is it possible to convert Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot to Sabily 11.10 Uhud in Unity environment? Maybe the question that always in our mind is Ubuntu had default to Unity but Sabily is default to Gnome3. So, is it possible for us to install Sabily while Ubuntu in Unity environment? I tried it and the result is yes, we can convert it. It totally change to Sabily in Gnome3. Unity also available to select if we prefer it. Here is the step that I do, followed the instruction on the Sabily Wiki page.

Run your terminal.

01. First of all we need to add Sabily repository like previous version.

02. Then install Sabily.

03. Choose 'y' and enter when asked.

04. Configuring gdm. Hit enter.

05. I select gdm(gnome) default manager.

06. I just enter 'y'.

07. Finished. Close the terminal.

08. Restart the system to see the result.

09. Go to System Settings then select Appearance. Change theme to Adwaita.

10. Open terminal then reset all the setting one by one. Then run gnome-tweak-tool to open Advanced Settings.

11. On Advanced Settings follow Theme setting as the screenshot.

12. Islamic Software installed(no need to reinstall).

13. Log out then log in Ubuntu to get Unity environment.

If you are not sure to do it before, now I proved that it can be done successfully. So what are you waiting for? Let try it.

Sabily in Gnome3 - Review

Let see a little review about Sabily in new Gnome3 desktop environment. As my installation of it in my USB 8GB flash drive, it default to Gnome desktop environment. The new appearance I think more nice than Unity. But I still need more time to get more experience on this new shell. Anyway if we feel uncomfortable with this environment, there still have Gnome classic to log in and you will get something like Gnome2 desktop. It looks old for me. Here some screenshot that I take on Sabily in Gnome3 desktop with a comment on it.

01. Monajat will start different from Gnome2. It will start like a shell from bottom of the desktop.

02. All applications view. About same like Unity, but different.

03. Islamic Software had one group. Included Alfanous - Quran search engine.

07. Authentication.

08. Screen keyboard. Like touch screen interface.

In this review shows login to Sabily Gnome3 desktop environment will not facing any problem. Hopefully some issue will be improved and more applications that compatible with Gnome3 will be developed and added to Sabily.

Nanny Parental Control Software - Simple Setup on Unity

Here some simple setup for your Nanny Parental Control Software inside new interface of Sabily or Ubuntu start from version 11.04. There some question about it in social network and blog. I found some people looking for Nanny blacklist for Unity but they can't found it. Even on Nanny website, there some problem to get or install it. Maybe they will fix it soon. Anyway what I want to share here how set the site that you want to block. Mean that you already know address of the site. For example I show here is Facebook and previously I had block Youtube. Lets try.

01. Click on Unity shell and search for Nanny. It already installed to Sabily. I'm not sure for other distro. Anyway if not yet installed, you can get and install it from Ubuntu Software Center.

02. Enter your login password here. No way to make different password.

03. Click on the Key button to make all the setting available.

04. This is PC time use that you can set. Just click or drag on it to change. Each block divided for half an hour. Red mean blocked time and green mean permitted time.

05. To add require block site, click on the Web Browser menu the click on the Configure button.

06. On the Forbidden menu, click on the Add button. You can see here I already blocked Youtube.

07. Add the name, description and URL of the site that you want to block. Name and description is up to you. The most important is URL of the site. For example here I add Facebook URL.

08. Facebook already added. Close the window then click on Apply button. Close Nanny setting window.

09. Open your web browser than try the URL that you added before. For example here, Facebook already block by Nanny Parental Control.

Hopefully you can control usage of computer or Internet for your kids without you need to monitor them all the time by using Nanny Parental Control software. So you can do other work while they use computer.

Unity Advanced Settings - Customize Font, Theme, Cursor etc

Maybe you try to adjust font size on Unity by right clicking your mouse and select 'Change Desktop Background' but the utility is not there. Its look like Unity had disable it. But there are tools created to control all of the utilities that remove from Unity.

It named 'Advanced Settings'. You can search it on the dash. Install it if it not yet install on your system.

Run it and you will get all the feature that you need there.
