Do you write HTML, PHP, Java or some other code ? You probably don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for software that you would use maybe only as a hobby? Today, I present an amazing solution, a multi-platform software that can wins ten to zero with the most popular programming editor on the market! Today I talk about Bluefish!

Developed in C/GTK+ is a software that can be used on all the major operating systems. You can use it, in fact, on Linux, Windows, Solaris and Mac
It’s available in 10 of the most important languages this software is a mix between a simple text editor and a very complete IDE. It’s a very intuitive software, thanks to some really interesting features and makes writing code a very relaxing, and not chaotic, experience .

In fact, Hadoop is used by a number of major players in the digital industry – most notably, Facebook, Yahoo! and even Twitter (using it to store and process tweets). It seems that Hadoop is making a name for itself amongst large-scale web services, making it the perfect framework for data-heavy systems such as social networks, search engines and even home insurance databases. But what is distributed computing and why should you be taking advantage of all it has to offer?

Distributed Computing – The Way Forward?

Moore’s law states that the number of transistors that can be used in a single processor will double every two years. With developments in the computer hardware industry simply refusing to slow down, it seems inevitable that single processors will eventually be able to handle much larger volumes of data. The invention of multi-threading and multi-core CPUs has been a significant leap towards this goal, but the problem is that other hardware areas just aren’t catching up.

Take the humble hard disk drive, for instance. If you assume a consistent upper speed of 100MB/sec using four independent I/O channels, 4TB of data would take around 10,000 seconds to read – that’s a loading time of almost 3 hours. Even using solid-state drives (running at speeds of 500MB/sec) you would still expect a loading time of over half an hour. Using distributed computing and a cluster of 100 machines, the loading time plummets to around 3 minutes. Obviously 4TB is a small sample when you think of the sheer volume of data handled on a daily basis by companies such as Facebook and Twitter – in these cases, distributed computing is simply the only way to handle such tasks.

Why Use Hadoop?

Hadoop is a large-scale distributed computing infrastructure and while it’s a useful tool in processing data on a single machine, its power lies in the ability to scale up, using hundreds or even thousands of computers to perform a single task. What’s more, Hadoop is and always has been a free, open-source project. This means that, not only do you get the power of distributed computing without software costs, but it’s also constantly being tested, updated and changed to meet the demands of its users. Since its creation, Hadoop has been designed with massive amounts of data in mind. To put it simply, hundreds of gigabytes of data would be a light load where Hadoop is concerned – depending on the hardware infrastructure, it is more than capable of handling terabytes and even petabytes (1024 terabytes) of data. So if you’re finding yourself in the position where you have just too much data to handle, Hadoop could be the perfect solution.

Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS)

Naturally, to handle such large volumes of data, Hadoop cannot rely on existing methods of file storage. Instead, it uses its own distributed file system which has been specifically designed to provide high-throughput to access the information. All files in a Hadoop system (when using it as a distributed computing framework) are stored in a redundant fashion across several different machines. While this may seem odd, it’s one of the most important features of Hadoop. When using multiple machines, there’s a much higher risk of something going wrong – most commonly, data corruption. By storing a file multiple times, the HDFS ensures the integrity of the data, allowing it to be sourced from different machines should a single copy become unavailable.

With the sheer flexibility and open-source nature of Hadoop, it’s the ideal framework to build advanced web-databases as well as processes to handle such data. Then there’s the myriad of other Apache projects which are designed to work hand-in-hand with Hadoop – from Avro, a data serialization system, to Zookeeper, a co-ordination service for distributed applications. Apache Hadoop makes all the power of distributed computing (in every configuration you can imagine) available to the masses.

OpenVAS is a framework that includes services and tools for scanning and the complete managment of vulnerability.
A vulnerability scanner is a tool that allows you to scan a target system (IP/HOSTNAME) based on a range of ports and a set of policies. The tool is supported by a database that is used from the vulnerability scanner to analyze possible problems whenever you find a listening service. The tool that scans receives daily updates from the database Network Vulnerability Tests “NVTs”.
google_ad_height = 90;
//-->

The following illustration shows the logical architecture of the OpenVAS framework:

We explain briefly the different components:

OpenVAS CLI: is a set of tools that allow administration of OpenVAS through the shell. This allows you to perform scanning, manage and create reports of various VA made.

Greenbone Security Assistant: is a web-based tool with an intuitive interface from which you can do the reporting/scan, manage and monitor the scanning profiles of various VA that you are making.

Greenbone Desktop Security: Like OpenVAS CLI, and Greenbone Security Assistant, is the tool that allows us to manage everything through the GUI interface on the desktop.

OpenVAS Scanner: is the component that allows us the scan of hostname/ip, port range “from-to” or entire networks such as “192.168.1.0/28″. Scanning can be initiated at various levels. By default OpenVAS has four scanning options:

Full and fast - Exploits the majority of NVT’s. And is optimized through the use of information previously collected.

Full and fast completed - Exploits the majority of NVT’s, between them there are some that may cause a shutdown of the service/remote system. This profile is optimized by the use of information previously collected.

Full and very deep - Exploits most of NVT’s but is slower because it doesn’t uses the information previously collected.

Full and very deep ultimate - Exploits the majority of NVT’s, between them there are some that may cause a shutdown of the service/remote system. This profile is slower because it doesn’t uses the information previously collected.

OpenVAS Manager: is the heart of OpenVAS, the manager receives task/information from the OpenVAS Administrator and the various administration tools CLI/WEB/GUI, then use the OpenVAS Scanner that will perform the Vulnerability Assessment. Also includes component that processes the results of the scans, so it also generates the final report.

OpenVAS Administrator: is the component through which users can manage and the feed (ie the updates).

NVT’s: it is the container of feed, ie test cases that detect the vulnerabilities, which are currently over 20,000.

Results, config: is the database (PostgreSQL) where reports are collected and where the entire configuration of OpenVAS is stored.

Administration

Now we see how to scan using the management tools included in OpenVAS. The system that i’m using in this examples s installed on a local virtual machine on which the OpenVASis already installed. First of all if you have already installed OpenVAS run this command to verify that everything is
ok:

In this screenshot the steps are only 4 but in reality it will proceed with the verification in 9 step.

Now we enter in the graphical web browser and as url we type http://YOUR-IP:9392
After logging just go in the Configuration and click on “New Target”.

The example in the screenshot shows how to insert a new target on which to run a Vulnerability Assessment. Click on “Create Target” and then “New Task”:

The task requires the inclusion of a “Name”, the scan type (in this case, Full and Fast) and finally the target to scan. Create your own Task and go the Tasks Window :

Here is the list of targets on which perform a Vulnerability Assessment. Now click on the green icon on the left to start the scan on that target, according to the type of scan that you chose to do, the time to complete the Assesment can vary greatly.
Once finished it will give you as report like this one:

Fortunately the “Win 7″ in the example does not have vulnerabilities because all services are closed, as you can see there is “localhost” or the linux hosting OpenVAS that is “High”, open this scan and analyze the report:

The screenshot does not show all the reports but simply serves to provide a preview on the output that OpenVAS generates when it finish a scan.
In the upper part of the report you have a summary of the vulnerability classes divided into “High/Medium/Low”:

In the bottom right under “Downloads” there is an useful option to download the OpenVAS report in various formats for example PDF. The report includes an index created inside it, so it’s easy to find the vulnerability without having to read the whole document that usually is composed by numerous pages.

That is the screenshot of the PDF generated by OpenVAS.

NOTES:

The database is postgresql, so you can browse and analyze the various fields that interest you. As mentioned before it is updated every day.

The target systems are operating systems (but I never tried if you can even scan of appliances, eg. Pix firewall)

The scans, based on the choice you do are more or less invasive, eg. “Full and Very Deep ultimate” could even broke the connection on the remote server.

The product is available on linux as server while the client can either be installed on linux and windows.

Anyone who knows the world Linux will surely heard of Ubuntu. A distribution that has done so much for Linux and the Open Source world itself! In fact, thanks to the hard work of Canonical, Ubuntu is one of the first user-friendly distributions that have brought many people in the Linux world. Especially those most skeptical!
But if Ubuntu is a distribution that has done so much in the past, now we must curb our enthusiasm. In fact, for some time now, this same distribution is becoming a lot more criticized by veterans of the Linux world.
According to these, in fact, the distribution of Canonical is becoming more and more into a sort of Windows operating system. Of course, always free, but very similar for both choices regarding the publicity of the Operating system that the choices for the operating system itself. If these choices, however, are much discussed at the same time they are having a big success ! And for this reason that doubts arise and that the same Canonical is criticized by the loyal fans of the penguin!
You might ask: but what Ubuntu is doing so bad?
Perhaps the choice of a graphical environment increasingly chaotic and asking for more and more resources is one of the choices discussed in the Linux community. If fact, first, Linux was known to consume very little system resources, for some time now, Ubuntu is going against this. With some questionable choices, in fact, Ubuntu lately is preferring applications that sacrify the speed and stability, focusing mostly on eye candy graphics. An example is Unity, the Window Manager. This WM, popped up some version ago, he immediately met much criticism. Criticism, that even today, can be found in many forums! But who is right? This is a question very symbolic … Unfortunately it is difficult to answer! Choices are very personal … But precisely for this reason we must listen to the older Linux users!

Another much-discussed decision by the “fathers-founders” of Linux is concerning the choice of codecs and software. More and more people, in fact, find within this operating system some of the most discussed codecs. Codecs anything but free!
These decisions, along with many others have been for some time, sent away some users who love the Linux philosophy from the famous Ubuntu. But, on the other side, if these users prefer distro more “pure” such as Debian, Slackware and others, these decisions are increasingly bringing new users! it’s obvious that a user accustomed to an environment rich in chaotic and excellent graphics will prefer a Ubuntu compared to healthy and pure Debian or Puppy Linux, for example.

The final aspect of the program that makes it complete in my opinion, is the ability to set specific times for executions of tasks, even in command line mode, ie without having to start the GUI program it will perform the various tasks in background.

Now you just have to try it and if you don’t find it in the repositories of your distro, as well as ask the developers, you can take a look at the project site:

I’m glad to offer to my reader a special offer if they plan to attend the next Velocity Conference by O’Reilly, register at this conference with the promotional code VL12AFF5 and you’ll get a 20% discount on Conference Fees.

When and Where ? June 25-27, 2012 at the Santa Clara CA, Convention Center.

What’s this conference about ? From their official site:

The only things expanding faster than new techniques and technologies to build a faster, stronger web are the expectations of web and mobile users.

To succeed in this ever-shifting, increasingly complex domain, you need to master a daunting array of web performance, operations, and mobile performance issues. Speed or reliability is no longer an option; both are assumed. Your pages and services must be fast, reliable, secure, and unbreakable. Your infrastructure must be efficiently scalable. Massive amounts of data must be captured and stored, and it all must work efficiently, reliably, and elegantly on an ever-expanding array of devices.

That’s why Velocity attracts the smartest minds in web performance and operations. Velocity is the best place to learn from peers, exchange ideas with experts, and share what has worked (and equally importantly, what has not worked) in real world applications. The focus is on practical, large-scale web development, presented by experts.

Velocity 2012 Topics and Themes

Automation strategies

Optimizing mobile performance

Cloud computing: the good bits

JavaScript speedups

Storing and managing big data: NoSQL, Hadoop

Metrics and monitoring

Varnish is a great tool that accelerates the performance of your site with a simple configuration and a low usage of resources, compared to the result you’ll get. Just because Varnish is designed and engineered to be fast by default it does not write any log to disk, outrageous you could think … to be honest the logs are available in a memory segment when this memory is filled, Varnish starts from the beginning and overwrites the oldest data in an infinite loop.

So in reality there are logs and they are available for some time, and this solution is much, much faster then logging to a file and it doesn’t require disk space, but how we can get them on file, possibly divided by virtual host as do Apache or Nginx ?

The first tool that we can use to see the logs is varnishlog, from the varnish site:

varnishlog is one of the programs you can use to look at what Varnish is logging. Varnishlog gives you the raw logs, everything that is written to the logs. There are other clients as well, we’ll show you these later.

In the terminal window you started varnish now type varnishlog and press enter.
….

11 SessionOpen c 127.0.0.1 58912 0.0.0.0:8080
11 ReqStart c 127.0.0.1 58912 595005213
11 RxRequest c GET
11 RxURL c /
11 RxProtocol c HTTP/1.1
11 RxHeader c Host: localhost:8080
11 RxHeader c Connection: keep-alive

The first column is an arbitrary number, it defines the request. Lines with the same number are part of the same HTTP transaction. The second column is the tag of the log message. All log entries are tagged with a tag indicating what sort of activity is being logged. Tags starting with Rx indicate Varnish is recieving data and Tx indicates sending data.

The third column tell us whether this is is data coming or going to the client (c) or to/from the backend (b). The forth column is the data being logged.

So varnishlog is an interesting tool for a live session when you want to verify if your varnish is doing what you expect, but not so useful when you want to put the logs into a file.

So let’s move to Varnishncsa, another varnish tool that can be much more useful for our goal, Varnishncsa display Varnish logs in Apache / NCSA combined log format

The basic usage from the command line is:

varnishncsa -a -w /var/log/varnish/access.log -D -P /var/run/varnishncsa.pid

-a: To append the logs to an already existing file
-w: To write the logs to the /var/log/varnish/access.log file
-D: To run varnishncsa as a daemon
-P: To write the PID file in the /var/run/ folder

The problem wIth this command is that we’ll get just 1 access.log file that is good as long as we manage with Varnish just 1 Virtual hosts, but could be not so useful if we want to have 1 file for every Virtual host defined in our Web server.

A good solution that I’ve found in the blog blox.xcir.net is to have 1 dedicated daemon for every virtual host and use the flag -m that is used to perform a regex match to the tag’s log entry so if we have 2 virtual host: linuxaria.com and linuxaria.org we could start 2 daemons with:

varnishncsa -m "RxHeader:^Host: linuxaria.com$" -a -w /var/log/varnish/linuxaria.com.access_log -D
varnishncsa -m "RxHeader:^Host: linuxaria.org$" -a -w /var/log/varnish/linuxaria.org.access_log -D

And these 2 daemons will generate 2 access_log files with the entry only for these Virtual hosts, now you can use logrotate to rotate the logs every day, just remember to restart the daemon in this case, or statistics software like awstats.

Credit cards, SIM cards, social networking sites and forums are just some of the many services that can give us trouble. That’s right … Each of these, now, requires passwords and codes that you must keep secrets. I can not remember everything for sure! The only solutions are the ones that we all know. Use a general password? too risky! An intuitive and memorable password? Unfortunately also too risky! Also writing them all in some paper is not a good idea … In fact, in addition to being found by others it could even be missed by us! So … what a beautiful mess!

Personally I must say that these 3 were the presentations that impressed me the most, perhaps because i knew very well some of the things in other talks, or I’ve already seen them in other events.

I advise you to look also at the slides of the talks:

Luca Deri, Founder ntop (I)
Getting more Information on your Network Performance

Talk where he presented the new tools for the Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) developed by him and his team and integrated into an appliance that can be used to monitor application-level flows used by users of a network.

Jimmy Conner, Cacti Plugin Architecture (US)
10 Year of Cacti – The latest Evolution of the new Plugins

In this talk Jimmy has presented the status for the Cacti project and some of the most commonly used plugins.

Michael Schwartzkopff, Consultant for high availability systems and network management (SWI)
Network Discovery with NeDi

A speech dedicated to the product NEDI, an open source software that can do the scan of the whole network, gather information about our equipment and report changes in the state of the network.

Conclusions

It’s been a great event, my compliments to all the speakers and to Wuerth-Phoenix for the organization, there were around 400 people following the talks, and I’ve enjoyed talking with them at the lunch, i hope to see you next year.
