DELL To acquire SonicWall

Dell Inc, the third largest maker of personal computers, announced its new acquisition plans to buy SonicWall, a provider of firewalls and other network security products. With this acquisition Dell is planning to extend its footprint in IT software and Security product market.

San Jose based SonicWall founded in 1991 was acquired in 2010 by Thoma Bravo LLC and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan – a buyout firm for $717 million.SonicWall had revenue of about $260 Million ,950 employees and 300,000 customers.Company also got 130 registed and pending patents in name. SonicWall have wide range of products includes Firewalls, anti-spam systems, secure remote access,email security, policy management tools, and backup and recovery systems.

This is Dell’s second acquisition since John Swainson , former CA Inc CEO , joined in Dell to lead Dell’s newly formed software department. Dell acquired AppAssure , maker of backup software last month. John Swainson said on a media call about the acquisition “my goal is to make software a meaningful part of Dell’s overall portfolio,so that means that this is not the last thing you’re going to see from us.We are going to build and buy software assets that complement the overlall Dell portfolio”
Dell is planning to close SonicWall deal by second quarter with an undisclosed price. But the analysts are estimating the deal price in between $1 billion and $1.5 billion

Intel reveals Xeon E5 server chips for cloud computing

Intel has officially launched Xeon E5-2600 series server chips which is designed for cloud computing. This new Intel server chip will deliver up to 80% better performance than previous server chips.

The Xeon E5 processors are 32nm chips based on Sandy Bridge architecture. Xeon E5 processors are designed for twin socket systems with up to 8 cores per chip and also included Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology.

According to Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors will support up to 8 cores and 768 GB of system memory.Intel’s Advanced Vector Extension (AVX) enables faster performance when running high performance computing tasks. Xeon E5-2600 also provide power saving with 50% less power consumption compared to Xeon 5600 series.Intel Xeon E5-2600 is specially designed to accommodate the large amount of internet traffic and rapidly growing cloud computing services.

Dell Buys backup software vendor AppAssure

Dell confirmed the acquisition of backup software company AppAssure Software Inc. The Financial details of this acquisition were not disclosed yet. Dell is planning to extend its storage and software strategy with this acquisition. With this acquisition Dell can enhance its existing storage capabilities by providing data protection.

“At a practical level, AppAssure enables Dell customers to seamlessly move and replicate data across our existing platforms — from an EqualLogic array in a remote office to a Compellent array at a data recovery site,” Dell Enterprise Solutions Group President Brad Anderson said.

AppAssure Software Inc is a software company based in Reston Virginia which provides backup and recovery technologies across physical, virtual and cloud environments.Company’s employee strength is roughly 230 and Dell is going to keep them in company and continue to invest in the company’s engineering and sales efforts.

Redhat has extended the life cycle of Redhat Enterprise Linux -RHEL 5 and 6.Redhat extended the support cycle of RHEL 5 and 6 from seven years to 10 years. So RHEL 6 support will be available till 2020.Due to increased customer demand Redhat has forced to extend their support of RHEL 5 through 2017.

RHEL 5 and 6 are offered with 10 year of production support,followed by three year extended life .Many of the customers adopting RHEL 5 were doing mid-cycle and they were looking at dealing with upgrades sooner that what’s desirable.So Redhat has decided the extention,and RHEL 5 support will be carried through 2017.
