works for many operating systems such as &#8220;Linux, MAC OS X, and Microsoft windows&#8221;, The stable release of LibreOffice 4.0.3 is currently available to install using PPA on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail, Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin. Check the installation instructions and the release notes down below.<span id="more-5582"></span></p>
<h3><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">LibreOffice 4.0.3 Release Notes</span></strong></h3>
<ul>
<li>This release is bit-for-bit identical to the 4.0.3 Release Candidate 3, so you don&#8217;t need to download or reinstall if you have that version already.</li>
<li>The distribution for Windows is an international build, so you can choose the user interface language that you prefer. Help content is available via an online service, or alternatively as a separate install.</li>
<li>Our Windows binaries are digitally signed by The Document Foundation.</li>
<li>For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type associations.</li>
<li>If you run Linux, the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.</li>
<li>LibreOffice 4.x drops a few long-deprecated features, including support for legacy binary StarOffice files, export to legacy Word and Excel (version 6.0/95), and legacy ODMA document management.</li>
<li>Some menu entries have changed or added. If you miss something, that may be due to the use of customised menu settings from your previous LibreOffice installation.</li>
<li>This version still contains a few annoying bugs, as listed <a href="https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/4.0#Most_Annoying_Bugs" target="_blank">here</a>. Specifically, the German Duden Korrektor extension needs a <a href="https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/4.0#Duden_Rechtschreibpr.C3.BCfung_.2F_Duden_Korrektor" target="_blank">manual fix</a>.</li>
</ul>

So, check down below the alternative keys or how to retrieve the &#8220;Backspace&#8221; shortcut key.<span id="more-5544"></span></p>
<p>As a part of the recent changes to Gnome Nautilus file manager, Many of features we used to have in earlier release is no longer available like the &#8220;Backspace&#8221; shortcut key for going back to previous visited location. This issue has been reported as a bug <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1108637" target="_blank">Here</a></span></strong>, and the importance of this bug is set as LOW priority! Anyway we found a unofficial bug fix for this issue. Before we go with this process, check the new shortcut keys.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Nautilus-backspace-key.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5548" alt="Nautilus backspace key" src="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Nautilus-backspace-key.png" width="339" height="228" /></a></p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>The new Shortcut for the &#8220;Previous&#8221; and &#8220;Next&#8221; locations</strong></span></h3>
<p>This is the new shortcut keys</p>
<p><strong>Hold</strong> <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">ALT</span></strong> <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">+</span></strong> <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Right</span></strong> or <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Left</span></strong> Arrow keys.</p>
<h3><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">[How To]: Retrieve the &#8220;Backspace&#8221; key</span></strong></h3>
<p>This process won&#8217;t deactivate the new shortcut keys mentioned up here, it will only add additional shortcut key for Nautilus file manager.</p>
<p>Run Terminal, then open this path,</p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">cd ~<span style="color: #339933;">/.</span>config<span style="color: #339933;">/</span>nautilus<span style="color: #339933;">/</span></div></div>
<p>Then open &#8220;accels&#8221; file using &#8220;Nano&#8221; or &#8220;Gedit text editors and add this line.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong> (gtk_accel_path &#8220;&lt;Actions&gt;/ShellActions/Up&#8221; &#8220;BackSpace&#8221;)</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Nano text editor</p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">nano accels</div></div>
<p>or Gedit text editor</p>

<p>Finally, save the file and quit nautilus file manager using &#8220;nautilus -q&#8221;.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s it for now.</p>

So, here&#8217;s how to enable horizontal scrolling and natural scrolling on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail.<span id="more-5519"></span> In the earlier release of Ubuntu we used to enable the horizontal scrolling feature directly from the &#8220;Mouse and Touchpad&#8221; settings window. Unfortunately, this feature is no longer available to enable directly from the settings window. So, all we need is the configuration editor for Ubuntu, which is pre-installed with package name &#8220;dconf-editor&#8221;.</p>
<p>Run command by clicking &#8220;Alt+F2&#8243;, then type &#8220;dconf-editor&#8221; without quotes.</p>
<p>Form the left side list follow this path &#8220;<strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">org</span></strong> &#8211;&gt; <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">gnome</span></strong> &#8211;&gt; <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">settings-daemon</span></strong> &#8211;&gt; <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">peripherals</span></strong> &#8211;&gt; <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">touchpad</span></strong>&#8221;</p>

<ul>
<li>Check &#8220;horiz-scroll-enabled&#8221; to enable Horizontal scrolling.</li>
<li>Check &#8220;natural-scroll&#8221; to enable Natural scrolling.</li>
</ul>
<p>Also, if you have &#8220;Ubuntu Tweak&#8221; Installed you could enable <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&#8220;Natural Scrolling&#8221;</span></strong> from <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&#8220;Tweaks&#8221;</span></strong> tab then select <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">&#8220;Miscellaneous&#8221;</span></strong>.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s for now.</p>

It comes with many pre-installed applications for several purposes. However, these applications won&#8217;t be enough for some users to be able to effectively use Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail. So, here&#8217;s a list of recommended applications for Ubuntu 13.04.<span id="more-5476"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Ubuntu-13.04-Raring-Ringtail-Screenshot.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5501" alt="Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail Screenshot" src="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Ubuntu-13.04-Raring-Ringtail-Screenshot.png" width="1280" height="800" /></a></p>
<h3><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail Pre-installed Applications</span></strong></h3>
<p>Before we go any further with the recommended applications to install, here&#8217;s the main pre-installed applications, some of these application are quite good and others I recommend to replace them with applications mentioned in the list down below.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">1. Empathy</span></strong></p>
<p>A simple instant messaging application supports audio/video calls, transferring files over many protocols such as Google talk, AIM, MSN, Facebook, Yahoo, &#8230;etc.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">2. Ubuntu Software Center</span></strong></p>
<p>Ubuntu software center allows you to install thousands of applications through currently active repositories. It has been improved a lot since the earlier releases. However, it still quite laggy to startup and install application. For me I prefer to use the terminal for installing packages, or installing application using terminal based package manager such as &#8220;Aptitude&#8221;.</p>
<p>We recommend replacing it. Check &#8220;<strong>2.0 Package managers</strong>&#8221; in the recommendation list down below.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">3. LibreOffice</span></strong></p>
<p>LibreOffice is a free and open-source office suite supports a various types of extensions for word processing, presentations, spreadsheet, databases and drawing. It even support Microsoft Office extensions. So, you have a problem modifying Microsoft Office files in LibreOffice.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">4. Mozilla Firefox</span></strong></p>
<p>Firefox is a free and open-source web browser. It&#8217;s considered as one of the best web browsers out there. However, you might consider installation additional web browser we will mention down there.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">5. Shotwell</span></strong></p>
<p>Is a free photo organizer developed by <a href="http://www.yorba.org/" target="_blank">Yorba</a>. It allows you to import images from your computer, Mobile phone, and camera, then you will be able edit these photos and share it to many image hosting services.</p>
<h3><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Necessary Applications for Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail</span></strong></h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">1. Third Party Packages</span></strong></p>
<p><a href="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Flash-Player-Logo.png"><img alt="Flash-Player-Logo" src="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Flash-Player-Logo.png" width="92" height="92" /></a></p>
<p>After installing Ubuntu 13.04 you won&#8217;t be able to play only the <a href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeFormats" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>free Audio/Video formats</strong></span></a> also you won&#8217;t be able to play <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Adobe Flash</span></strong> contents on your default web browser. So, you will need to install additional packages to be able to run a various types of restricted file formats supported by Gstreamer such as &#8221; MP3, AVI, H.264, WMV, ..etc &#8220;.</p>
<p>Run Terminal, then type,</p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">sudo apt<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>get install ubuntu<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>restricted<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>extras</div></div>
<p><div class="note"><div class="noteclassic">Also you could replace the package name for other Ubuntu 13.04 derivatives such as &#8220;sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras, sudo apt-get install lubuntu-restricted-extras, sudo apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras&#8221;</div></div></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">2.0 Package Managers</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>2.1 Aptitude</strong></span> is a free and lightweight terminal based package manager allows you to manage installed packages and install new applications directly from the front-end user interface.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Aptitude-package-manager-Ubuntu-13.04-Raring-Ringtail.png"><img class="alignnone  wp-image-5500" alt="Aptitude-package-manager-Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail" src="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Aptitude-package-manager-Ubuntu-13.04-Raring-Ringtail.png" width="338" height="228" /></a></p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">sudo apt<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>get install aptitude</div></div>
<p>After installing the applications simply run it from the terminal with administrator privileges using this command.</p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">sudo aptitude</div></div>
<p>If you are not familiar with aptitude press &#8220;Shift + /&#8221; or &#8220;Ctrl+h&#8221; to display the help window.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">2.2 Synaptic</span></strong> package manager is another package manager but it comes with a graphical user interface &#8220;GUI&#8221; that some user might prefer instead of using the terminal.</p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">sudo apt<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>get install synaptic</div></div>
<p>After installing run the application with administrator privileges.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>2.3 GDebi</strong></span> is a package installer for local DEB packages. This a quick alternative for Ubuntu software center. Simply Right-Click on the DEB package and select open with &#8220;Gdebi installer&#8221;.</p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">sudo apt<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>get install gdebi</div></div>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">3. Web Browser</span></strong></p>
<p>By default Ubuntu comes with the latest stable release of Mozilla Firefox which is a great web browser. But, if you would like to install another web browse such as &#8220;Chromium&#8221; free and open-source version of Google Chrome web browser, you can simply install it using this command.</p>
<div class="codecolorer-container php vibrant" style="overflow:auto;white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #9F9F9F;width:435px;"><div class="php codecolorer" style="padding:5px;font:normal 12px/1.4em Monaco, Lucida Console, monospace;white-space:nowrap">sudo apt<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>get install chromium<span style="color: #339933;">-</span>browser</div></div>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">4. Compiz Configuration Settings Manager &#8220;CCSM&#8221;</span></strong></p>

<p>Since Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal development, Canonical decided to add Amazon integration into Unity launcher and Unity Dash shopping lens. So, whenever you try to search for anything it will provide more search results from Amazon.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Amazon-integration-Ubuntu-13.04.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5489" alt="Amazon-integration-Ubuntu 13.04" src="http://www.linuxnov.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Amazon-integration-Ubuntu-13.04.png" width="302" height="106" /></a></p>
<h4><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">What you might don&#8217;t Know about web app integration?!</span></strong></h4>
<p>Many users consider this kind of integration as Adware, which annoys many users when they try to search for anything using unity dash.</p>
<p>According to Canonical&#8217;s <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/privacy-policy" target="_blank">privacy policy</a>, all searches will be sent as search terms including your IP address to productsearch.ubuntu.com and third parties such as Amazon, Facebook, Twitter and BBC.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">What Canonical do with your information?!</span></strong></p>
<ul>
<li>To authenticate access to certain features of our websites.</li>
<li>To contact you to respond to enquiries or to provide notices to you regarding your use of our websites or the provision of our services.</li>
<li>To provide services, products, process payment, and authenticate access (where required).</li>
<li>To analyse the performance or the appropriateness of products or services.</li>
<li>To comply with legal and regulatory requirements (including responding to court orders, subpoenas and to prevent crime). These special circumstances may require us to disclose personal information.</li>
<li>To contact you if your actions violate your agreement with us (if any).</li>
<li>To fix errors and analyse trends.</li>
<li>To study how anonymous users interact with our websites and services.</li>
<li>To market our products or services to you.</li>
</ul>
<p>So, after you know that canonical and other third parties collecting information about you based on your IP address and search queries. Are you ok with that?!</p>
<h3><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">[How To]: Get Rid of Amazon Integration in Unity Launcher and Unity Dash lens</span></strong></h3>
