Q: How do you shut things out?

Ans: Every couple months, I like to take 3-4 days where I don't look at my phone or I put my phone away. I like to take vacations. I travel to places I've never been to and that's how I recharge my battery.

Q: What’s your motto or the advice you live by?

Ans: Keep working. Don't ever stop working. Take breaks but don't ever stop working.

Q: What is your favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car?

Ans: I don't really go to bars. But I like to listen to my previously recorded music a lot. I normally just chill when I drive or I am on the phone.

Q: For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words?

Ans: A Breath Of Fresh Air.

Q: If you could perform with anyone, in the future, who would it have to be?

Ans: Drake. he's one the greatest artist of all time. it would be dope to work with him.

Q:What is your favorite song to sing live?

Ans: I think my song "Let's Go To Vegas" would be my favorite song to perform. It has such a good vybe.

Q: Which famous musicians have you learned from?

Ans: I learned a lot from following and watching the careers of Jay Z. I got to see artist such as YG, Nipsey husstle, Ty Dolla $ign and Dj Mustard develop personally. That was a very cool situation to be around and I'm extremely fortunate to have been apart of that.

Q: Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?

Ans: 90's music is an era I grew up on and that era of music is one of the best eras in my personal opinion. That whole era of music really influenced what I had Going on.

Q: Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV?

Ans: Yes. I'll perform any and everywhere.

Q: Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?

Ans: I used to get nervous but now I just have fun. Because at the end of the day that is what it is all about.

Q: What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous?

Ans: If you really want it. Dive in Head first and don't look back.

Q) When did you start making music?
A) I started performing when I was 3 years old and I started making beats around the age of 10.

Q) Who is your role model in the music world?
A) I'm inspired by legends like; Lil Wayne, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Kenya West, Jay Z just to name a few.

Q) Is there anything you would do differently in your career?
A) I feel like I still have time to do most of the things that I haven't done yet, So far so good!

Q) Whom would you want to do a tour/concert with?
A)When everything lets up with this quarantine I want to do the biggest world tour with Whiz Khalifa, Trappin Hardo, Meek Mill, and Snoop Dogg. Just a huge world tour with nothing but hit after hit.

Q) Do you ever get lost in the music?
A) Of course, I do. I work on so much music and when I get the vide I just get into whatever song I'm working on. It's easy to get lost on music when you focused on making music.

BIOGRAPHY: Prophie Luciano

Chezeq Young (KAY-zik YUNG) Also Known as - Prophie Luciano – is an American Hip-hop recording artist, producer and music executive from Pittsburgh, PA.

Born December 6, 1993 Chezeq is the son of Thomas and Lisa Young and is the brother of 1 sister and 3 brothers.

Since the age of 3 years old Chezeq had a passion for entertaining people, he got his first start on the stage of Mount Carmel Church where he performed in front of a packed house on Sunday morning.
After his performance the young entertainer received high praises from everyone in the congregation, this feeling of accomplishment only drove him to want to do more.
At the age of 10 Chezeq’s father bought him his first drum machine and he picked up on music production very fast.
Not long after he started making beats he got his hands on some turntables and took a stab at deejaying. Chezeq was not only musically inclined he was also a 4.0 student while attending Gateway High School.
Inspired by artists such as; Lil Wayne, J Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z the Pittsburgh recording artist became fascinated with everything about music. He would spend most of his time putting shows together or producing new music for other local artists.
Now going by the name Prophecy, Chezeq was still trying to find his voice in hip-hop; a few name changes he tried a few different production styles.
In high school people either called him Proph or Prophecy, he ran with other local artists called High Life. They would perform locally and do music together around the city.
Chezeq decided to focus on his education and took a brief break from writing and producing music.
He went on to attend North Carolina A&T University where he majored in Engineering.
This was where he released his mixtape “The Hiatus” it was a tribute to Grammy Award Winning artist Lauren Hill.
The Hiatus immediately became an online fan favorite and garnered Chezeq a few interviews.
This is also when he would catapult his “Liferz Movement”. Prophie, credits Kanye West for inspiring him to think outside the box and to be original. That originality would end up paying off when Prophie Luciano would become a well sought-after producer and emcee.

Thus far he’s already collaborated with major recording artists and local recording artists such as; Hardo, (FTR Drama, Dehkewlz, Bazzo, Lil Cee, Kush Wilkes, Juice Jones, Stoney and many more. Prophie Luciano has released several EP’s and mixed tape projects, he’s dropped several music videos and he's currently releasing a new single called, “Sliding” the song is slated for a Mid-Spring/ releases.

New Music Discovey: UK Reggae Band "Hassle" Are Here To Settle Things Down [Interview]

UK reggae band Hassle was born in 2002.

Hassle are influenced from the reggae sound of the seventies, aiming for a more warm, pure, and earthy sound, something often lacking in modern music.

The Hassle sound combines a mix of lover’s rock, dub, conscious lyrics about the world today, and the beauty and power of nature.

[Q] Your last release, Make Ya Mouth Run landed at number 1 on the iTunes world reggae chart, you must have been thrilled.

[A ] 100 percent! How could you not be really, that can never ever be taken away. There is so much self-hype, bluff and fakery in the modern world but that No1 and streams we have had since are simply facts, end of story.

[Q] You mentioned Spotify has that opened up many doors

[A] Yeah, massively. To get plays in all corners of the world is what you do music for in the first place. I mean you want your music to be heard by as many people as possible and Spotify allows that, there are many amazing artists out there so to think people are taking the time to listen to ours is amazing

[Q] So, your new single is called life is for living tell us about that

[A] Well it’s a song I wrote a while back and had just started recording it, then due to the current lock down with Coronavirus obviously the band couldn’t get together, so I just recorded it all myself at home and played all the instruments on the track including, bass, piano, organ and guitars. Because the band is old school, the only other member except me that has the internet and recording equipment was Tony, so he sent some extra guitar parts over the internet and I mixed it all this was done at home.

Neil Pickles who has Mastered for the likes of Paul Weller and Stone Foundation and has done so for Hassle previously did the two tracks for this release and as usual did a fantastic job.

When people heard it they responded extremely positively and the vibe was that needs to be put out now. Life Is For Living holds a positive and is a needed message in these times.

[Q] You mentioned before about not being able to get the band together due to the current lockdown. How has it affected you musically

[A] In a lot of ways. We had the previous hit and just as we were getting sorted to put our foot down everything had to be put on hold like it has for everyone.

You have to either adapt or stagnate which is why we’ve had to go a different route for now, so we’re putting this track out, recorded during the lockdown along with a video on our own label Slowglass Sound (we’ve previously put two Hassle eps out).

We are living in the moment and therefore adapting and doing something positive, thanks to the great efforts of our small tight team, we’ve managed to put out this single out.

[Q] The second track on this release is, Life Is For Living (Self Isolation Dub) which I extremely enjoyed, tell us more about that

[A] Well I’m extremely into dub and obviously that reflects in the band, so to me when approaching dub I want it to have its own identity when compared to the vocal version. With this dub version I stripped it back and made the track a bit darker and bleaker. In my mind I let the bass stand out and have more space and when I mention darker and bleaker it’s because to me that’s what the streets felt like one evening due to the self-isolation vibe, hence the name for the dub version.

[Q] I listened to all of your tracks on Spotify. There is a track called In And Out Of Love which is a 70s dub mix. It sounds like it’s from exactly that 70s era, how was it recorded

[A] Ha Ha. Thanks job done then, Funny you mention that track as it’s had a load of streams, it’s one of the most played Hassle tracks worldwide.
Recording wise we used as much analogue and tape as possible. Using outboard, old school tape effects such as the Wem Copicat and space echoes. We tried to use the equipment which artists used back in the day as well as the restrictions they had and mind sets.
With the new release everything I recorded I put restrictions on, how many tracks I use and how many effects.
I also try to keep away from plugins as much as possible if you have something that improves or adds to a sound then it doesn’t matter if it’s digital or analogue, use it, but if you have 20 tracks and ten plugin effects going it’s not going to sound like the 70s reggae and dub that I’m into.
However, there is no right or wrong way to record it, it depends on what sound you want to achieve. There’s plenty of good music which has loads of effects on with the kitchen sink thrown in and still sounds great.
I’m definitely influenced by sound but I also want my own vibe on a track as well, it’s not a case of wanting to mimic things but influence definitely plays a part even if it’s subconsciously.
I appreciate you taking the time to hook out In And Out of Love and glad you enjoyed it.

[Q] Apart from the 70s era of reggae and dub is there any more current reggae acts or artists that you enjoy

[A] Prince Fatty and Adrian Sherwood are two producers who make fantastic music. Their sound and attitude towards how they make a track as well as their choice of equipment to use I dig on. They are definitely the two I get excited about when they have a new release.

[Q] So, taking into consideration the current lockdown what are your plans for the future with Hassle

[A] First up is taking care of my family and each other, which takes preference over everything.
Also at the same time, knowing this won’t last forever, I’ll be recording and writing but mainly recording as I have the whole next album written.
Once we can all go out as a band and play again we will rehearse and gig. We already have a two albums to put out that aren’t available as well the new stuff.
The way the current situation has affected things, it’s made me change my mind set as to how you can get your music played live.
Without having other band members about obviously there’s acoustic sessions which I do as well as sound system live dubs of our tracks and live vocals, just thinking outside my normal box really on how to go about things.
I guess that is to me creating a positive from a bad situation.

Two years ago, Pranab Mukherjee, President of India between 2012 and 2017 offered a statue representing the icon of world peace at the University of Ghana in Accra, in honor of the "friendly" relations between the two country [2]. Princess Shyngle: "Rich men sleep with me and abandon me"

Princess Shyngle, a controversial Gambian actress based in Ghana, revealed that many men, rich and poor, as well as politicians express interest in attending, but that they disappear soon after.

She made this revelation during the show "Afternoon Show" on Ghana's local GHONE television channel, hosted by Berla Mundi.

"As a woman, it is difficult for me to reject all men who come to me. All men, I mean the rich, the poor, the politicians, but as soon as they come in, they go away, "Shyngle explains in a sad voice.

She added that at one point she had decided not to have a big head against the many men who want her, so she decided to take her time and choose one.

That person, perhaps, was still under surveillance because Shyngle had said she was not dating anyone.

She was on the show with Ghanaian rapper Edem and others to discuss what men are looking for in women when choosing a woman.

Shyngle admitted to being "indecent on social media," but still hoped that his "real man" would love him sincerely.

Q:) Tell us about you?

A:) My name is Romlus and i am from the North East of England in Hartlepool where i have a recording studio.

I have my debut album out now and it’s available for download on most digital distribution platforms i.e iTunes, Google Play, Spotify and Amazon.

This Album is an eye opener to those who understand life, the struggles, and ups and down.

The situations affecting us on a daily basis I can say its food for thoughts. It helps the next person think about the decisions they make in life. It gives hope.

I talk about things people don’t want to talk about.

Q:) When did you start making music?

A:) I started making music when i was young about 16 years but it was just for fun and i used to just write songs and i stopped for same time until i was about 23 that’s when i got back to the music business on a more serious note.

But at that time i did not do anything with the material i was just building my portfolio and I lost all the material i had and started from the start again and i believe it was a blessing in disguise because the song i wrote where much better than before as i had matured.

I got together with 2 friends of mine who shared the same interest as me so i started my own Record Label Romlus Records

A:) When i was young i used to listen to all types of music mostly NWA, BIG , M Jackson, James Brown, Naz, Eminem, Drake, 50, Jay Z, Master P, dmx and my role model is Tupac.

A:) Works with other artist out there who do not have the opportunity to show case their talent.

Q:) Who would you want to do a tour/concert with?

A:) That’s a good one at this point of my career Drake and Jay Z

A:) I think everyone get lost in music at one point in their career not everything we do as artist is wright.

A lot of decisions have to be made and not all are correct. Music is like art a lot is involved to much thinking that’s when you can get lost.

Over Mr. GibFunk

Mr. GibFunk (Hendrik Broeze) zag in 2017 het levenslicht nadat hij gekscherend zijn eerste HipHop track (Woke Up!) schreef, en met zijn zwager deze track in een studio in Amsterdam-Oost ging opnemen.

Sindsdien is Mr. GibFunk alleen nog maar bezig om z’n vrije tijd te gebruiken om zijn muziek en teksten te perfectioneren, en verder uit te bouwen.

De keuze om meer voor de Nederlandse HipHop te gaan is ontstaan na het schrijven van de track “Huisje Opruimen”. Deze track gaf Mr. GibFunk een duidelijke boodschap, waarbij vooral de combinatie van schrijven en de Nederlandse tekst passend maken met de melodie, hem ontzettend veel plezier geeft.

De missie van Mr. GibFunk is dan ook om een geheel eigen stempel te drukken binnen de HipHop muziek, waarbij hij zichzelf telkens opnieuw wil blijven uitvinden als creatieve alleskunner. Met eindeloze mogelijkheden, waar nooit een eind aan komt.

De naam Mr. GibFunk is ontstaan door G-Funk (GhettoFunk) samen te voegen met Gibberish – Wat voor mij Humor en Absurdisme betekend. Deze combinatie van G-Funk en vrolijkheid wil Mr. GibFunk door zijn muziek delen met de wereld.

Wie is Hendrik?

Hendrik Broeze is geboren op 4 januari 1977 en woont nu in Nederhorst den Berg samen met vriendin Gwen en dochter Indi.

Zijn vader is een creatieve dromer en rebels. Zijn moeder is lerares Frans, positief, en een echte doorzetster. Zijn zusje Emilie woont, net als zijn ouders, in Huizen met haar twee kinderen en vriend.

“Het leven wordt door mij beantwoord vanuit het hart. Blijdschap en Geluk voor mijzelf en mijn omgeving is in overvloed. Ik ben een dromer.

Adrian Rubin is a successful freelance creative director based in Brooklyn, New York. With a successful decade of experience under his belt, Mr. Rubin has consistently worked with companies and individual clients, both startups and high-profile alike.

Q:) What are some things that you love?

A:) I love a lot of things. Art has been one of the main inspirations of my life. Even in my spare time, I enjoy creating drawings that fully express my artistic style. I recently enjoyed taking leisure hikes and treks when I travel a place. I have recently gone to Alaska for a quick travel to visit a dear friend in Anchorage. He invited me to take a short hike to Matanuska Glacier, a very scenic view of the lake during the winter periods. At first, I was hesitant because although Brooklyn has occasional harsh winters, I don’t know if I could stand this one. Eventually, it turned out to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and made it an inspiration for my current artworks. I also love reading and trying out new culinary experiences.

Q:) What’s your favorite type of food?

A:) Most people would see me and think that I’m a safe eater. When friends invite me for lunch, they would go to a ‘safe’ restaurant where they think I can order a safe staple of burgers, fries or barbecue. That is very far from the truth. I really enjoy trying out new things, and recently, I have been into trying out different Japanese cuisines. I am into sushi, sashimi, and ramen. I think I have tried every nearby ramen place there is here in Brooklyn! I really enjoy Miso ramen and Shoyu ramen with all of its classic toppings in place. It beats the cold and gives me warm positive vibes when I have it for lunch. I crave Japanese food every so often.

Q:) Describe your typical day.

A:) I don’t think there’s a typical day for a freelancer. Most 9-5 workers would have that, but I really don’t! However, I do have a morning routine that gets me on the go for projects that may be ever-changing in schedules. The morning I wake up, I try to stay away from gadgets. I have made for myself a thankfulness journal that I write on every day. I put on 5 things I am thankful for yesterday and 5 things I am looking forward to that day. This sets me in a positive beat throughout the day. After this, I do a quick 20-minute cardio, take a shower and have a breakfast. Breakfast for me is really important. I would usually have a healthy wrap, a salad, or a sandwich. I’m not a fan of sweet breakfasts. Then after having a good breakfast, this is where I’m motivated to continue on with my projects. I have a separate office room in my house to do my tasks. This keeps me from being distracted. If I have client meetings, I usually do them mid-afternoon or late afternoon, around 3-5pm.

Q:) What is one thing you’ve learned since starting your career?

A:) I have learned that there are always opportunities around the corner if you look hard enough. I’ve heard that one of the most common problems that freelancers have is the consistency of the work. I have been in this industry for more than 10 years, and it is safe to say that I have gained a strong client base because I’ve worked hard for it. The key lesson is to always go for the low hanging fruit or those clients who are already in need of a person like you. That way, your prospect-finding becomes easier.

Q:) What motivates you every day?

A:) Something that motivates me every day is the daily reminder to myself that I am doing what I love. Art has always been a part of me, and the fact that I am able to do what I’m passionate about in order to help people is something that I’m deeply grateful for. This is my main source of motivation. They say, when you do what you love, you don’t have to work a single day in your life.

Long-Lost ‘African Mona Lisa’ Painting By Nigerian Artist Smashes Expectations at London Auction

After decades of being lost, a portrait of a Nigerian princess dubbed the “African Mona Lisa” sold at a London auction this week for £1.2 million ($1.7 million), smashing initial estimates.

The painting, a 1974 portrait of Adetutu “Tutu” Ademiluyi by Nigerian artist Ben Enwonwu, was projected to earn up to £300,000 ($414,000) when it went up for sale at the Bonhams auction house, Agence France-Presse reported. The likeness of the Ife royal princess recently turned up in a London apartment after having been missing for decades.

“The portrait of Tutu is a national icon in Nigeria, and of huge cultural significance,” said Giles Peppiatt, Bonham’s director of modern African art, who discovered the work after a family in north London contacted him. He said the family was shocked to learn the painting was a “missing masterpiece.”

“It’s very exciting to have played a part in the discovery and sale of this remarkable work,” he added.

According to AFP, Enwonwu is considered the father of Nigerian modernism. He created three paintings of “TuTu,” the locations of which remained a mystery until this most recent discovery. The portraits served as symbols of peace following a war among ethnic groups during the Nigerian–Biafran conflict of the late ’60s.

“It has been a legendary painting for 40 years, everybody keeps talking about Tutu, saying ‘where is Tutu?’ ” said acclaimed novelist Ben Okri, who told the AFP the portrait has taken somewhat of a mythical status back in his native Nigeria.

“He wasn’t just painting the girl, he was painting the whole tradition,” he said of Enwonwu. “It’s a symbol of hope and regeneration to Nigeria, it’s a symbol of the phoenix rising.”

Enwonwu’s piece, “Negritude,” also painted in the ’70s, sold for £100,000 ($138,000) in the same sale, according to the news service.

Q:) When did you start making music?

A:) I been rapping since I was 10 years old putting two radios on side of each other and making tapes to instrumentals in middle school. But I really took rapping seriously about 2005.

Q:) Who is your role model in the music world?

A:) My biggest role model in the music business has to be Mr. Bryan “Baby” Williams. He’s from New Orleans and is a Businessman to the max.
I grew up watching him shut the city down for Bayou Classic Pre-Katrina era. He had the city on on smash.

I remember looking at him coming down Canal in the red drop top Benz, two watches, diamond teeth with everyone taking pictures. I had to be in like middle school at the time thinking to myself that’s going be me one day.

From that day on I knew I had to figure out what’s going get me all that. Hell why you think I have diamonds in my teeth now, all this jewelry on, switching cars up? All that came from Stunna.
The whole bling culture in the business came from a successful business from New Orleans.. Stunna!

Q:) Is there anything you would do differently in your career?

A:) Hell yeah! I would have done more and got professional help. I understand now it’s just some stuff you got to pay for, when it comes to promotions and branding.

I’m tight to the T with my budget I don’t care how much money I have, I need to spread this around is how I think. So the only thing I would change is understanding the fact I can’t do it all on my own.
You need help professional help.

I would have been much further than I currently am, but I love the experience I received in the process.

Q:) Who would you want to do a tour/concert with?

A:) I would love to do a tour with Rick Ross. I think his style is something similar to mine. I admire the way he brands. I think that being on tour with him would help me grow in the process as a CEO/Artist.
I learn a lot from watching and not saying a word, I would advance so much watching him, that’s who I would want to tour with.

Q:) Do you ever get lost in the music?

A:) All the time - certain songs bring out certain emotions. I got some of my music I listen to and it brings tears to my eyes remembering the pain I felt creating it.

I also feel happy emotions when listening to some of the music – it’s happy emotions. So this applies when artists create relatable music.

I mean I don’t cry when I hear other artists - only I have that musical effect on myself cause sometimes when I record I don’t get lost within the music until I hear myself and remember the pain. But overall, I get lost in music daily. It’s something I’m passionate about.

Q: Tell us about you?

A: Im a young 18 year old rap artist from Herndon Virginia, But i now currently reside in
Knoxville Tennessee.

I started rapping about three years ago so that would put me at about age 14-15 when I decided to pick up the mic.
There is really not much to me really I was adopted very young and I've had a lot of set backs in my life with school, and the judicial system and things but since this is my first interview i want it to go on record that none of this would be possible without my Moms.
I haven’t recently been showing it but I love you moms, I’m doing this for you.

Q:) When did you start making music?

A:) Oh shit lol, umm like i just said “about three years ago so that would put me at about age
14-15”

Q:) Who is your role model in the music world?

A:) As of right now? thats a pretty hard question.. it fluctuates a lot but overall i would have
to say Eminem. His story is so amazing the battles he had to go through the demons he faces and the actual psychological problems he’s battled.
I know my life has never come close to his or any of my experiences but I’ve felt his pain and Eminem will always be in my rotation till i flatline and i think many other people can also connect to him in an aspect. Thats why his music did as amazing as it did. (also he’s an amazing artist duh).

Q:) Have you ever been so moved by a song that you cried? If so what was it?

A:) Shit bruh theres been many haha, From 1-800 suicide prevention, to Marvins Room, all
the way to some sappy shit like perfect by ed sheer an haha. Im a very versatile person
when it comes to music.

Q:) Is there anything you would do differently in your career?

A:) Yes of course theres constant room for improvement at all times.
I need way more features and i need to start doing features.
In 2018 I actually wanna work with another artist on a possible collar Ep.
also had vision of a possible mix tape but who can spill the beans just yet.. I'd like to get wayyyy More shows going cause I’m honestly a hype ass lil nigga and i know i could have the crowd rocking even if it just to open up for a main act.

As a realistic goal i'd have to say i wanna big as big as Skii mask even though i don’t really rap like him, i love his persona and just his overall vibe, In the long run though i think everyones dream is to be as big as Pac.

Q:) What is your secret to be different from other musicians?

A:) Woah woah, woah, I can’t give you all that sauce just now did you forget this was still a competition out here lol.
What I can contest to is be yourself but also spice up what you’re saying in your rhymes that is if you write your own shit.
Don’t over exaggerate to the point where someone can fact check your shit and see you’re a fake ass rapper with no meaning behind his bars.
Thats how i see it but now and days people kinda bite the wave and seem to get put on with no real content behind their music, but I’m not hating cause there are days you’ll see me blasting that wave bitting shit with no meaning in my car so I guess they are paths you could decided to choose from.

But i love it, I wouldn’t trade it for the world i can’t see myself doing anything else. I've been cutting back a little because i’ve actually gotten really depressed lately and in a dark place but i still write pretty frequently and so forth i just need to get out more instead of be confined to my bedroom probably 24/6 since i have to fit sleep in haha.

Q:) Do you plan to make music for as long as you can?

A:) Of course l probably die in the studio. I know i can do this shit man, theres never been a doubt in my mind

Tell us something about yourself.

I’m 22 years old from Boston, Massachusetts. I grew up in the Dorchester side and I’m very passionate about music.

I probably have spent the last 7-8 years trying to find a way to shape my style of music. When I’m not thinking about music I’m at some mall or outlet trying to find a fresh gear for the day or for the night, I love shopping, everyone does, right? I’m an outgoing person and usually interact with everybody, and easily make new friends.

I feel good about my music where it is now and I feel like maybe one day, to be as iconic as the big names in the industry.

When did you start making music?

I would say I officially started making music when I was a sophomore at Madison Park High School in Roxbury.

But way before that I would dream about seeing myself in the music industry. Playing shows, recording music, taking pictures, I wanted all of that. I used to rap along to 50 Cent songs and act like it was me on that stage.

Who is your role model in the music world?

My role model is definitely J. Cole. Cole has been a huge inspiration in my life when it comes to music.

I literally played out each and every single Cole song. I bought every album and what I love the most about Cole is that he is super authentic.

He stays true to who he is, he doesn’t paint a picture of someone and his art is not just to sell records. His music sells because he’s real and I love that about him.

Is there anything you would do differently in your career?

No, not really, for now that is. I feel like at this moment everything is going in the right direction for me, my aspirations, and my goals. I just want to strengthen my financial stability to make more investments towards my brand DeAndre4Stackz and SubCulture Records.

Who would you want to do a tour or concert with?

That’s a difficult question. There are a lot of big names and talented people locally, but if they would ask, definitely with Kanye West or Travis Scott.

I feel like my style together with Kanye or Scott’s is something that can be amazing and the stage designed into something super crazy, with lots of lights and flames. I will definitely be a show to see.

Do you ever get overwhelmed by the music that is now available?

No I’m not overwhelmed at all. There is a lot of talent out there, and not many get the chance to get featured online in blogs or on radio shows.

I know my music is going to stand out, it always does, it just have to get in front of the people who appreciate my style and the fans that can relate to my stories.

I always trust my gut instinct and I feel good about everything that’s going on at the moment.

Meet Gladys West, The Female Engineer Who Played a ‘Pivotal’ Role In Developing the GPS

From cell phones to cars and even social media, most folks in this day and age are familiar with the Geographical Positioning System, or GPS. Little known is the fact that an African–American woman mathematician was a part of the original team of engineers tasked with developing the highly useful system.

“GPS has changed the lives of everyone forever,” Gwen James, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., said upon learning her longtime soror Gladys West played a “pivotal” role in creating the now-household technology.

“There isn’t a segment of this global society — military, auto industry, cell phone industry, social media, parents, NASA, etc. — that doesn’t utilize the Global Positioning System,” she told the Free Lance-Star.

West, 87, enjoyed a 42-year career as a mathematician at the Naval Support Facility in Dahlgren, Va., where she, and fellow engineers saw the early beginnings of the popular tracking system. She was just one of four Black Americans employed at the Naval base when she first started in 1956, her calculations eventually leading to satellites. A year later West married Ira West, a fellow mathematician she met at the Naval facility.

James said she was totally unaware her soror was one of the “Hidden Figures” behind GPS until she read her biography for an event honoring senior members of her sorority. Now, she wanted to share West’s accomplishments with the rest of the world.

“I think her story is amazing,” James said.

West herself said she had no idea her time spent recording satellite locations would impact so many people years later. To her, she was simply doing her job.

“When you’re working every day, you’re not thinking, ‘What impact is this going to have on the world?’ ” she told the Free Lance-Star. “You’re thinking, ‘I’ve got to get this right.’ ”

According to the newspaper, West collected data from the orbiting machines, honing in on information that helped her determine their exact locations as they communicated across the world. That data was then entered into so-called “supercomputers” while she worked on computer software designed to measure precise surface elevations.

In a nutshell, West said her calculations took a great deal of time, as she was checking and double-checking equations and worked to collect and analyze troves of data. She insists the work was rewarding, however.

“I was ecstatic,” West said. “I was able to come from Dinwiddie County and be able to work with some of the greatest scientists working on these projects.”

When it comes to traveling, the seasoned mathematician surprisingly prefers a paper map over the tracking system, as some of the data points could be outdated from the time she worked on the equations, her daughter told the newspaper.

To this day, she still does her own calculations.

Secessionist Crisis in Cameroon Risks Sliding Into a Rebellion

A secessionist push in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions is on the brink of a full-blown revolt, threatening political stability in a country ruled by one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

Following a crackdown on independence supporters who tried to raise flags on government buildings in the central African nation’s English-speaking regions in October, at least 16 members of the security forces have been killed in attacks the government blames on the activists. This month a mob of 200 men besieged a paramilitary police station, according to the government.

It marks a dangerous turn in the crisis that began about a year ago with peaceful protests against the French language’s dominance in courtrooms and schools. Attacks on the military “presented those activists who were against armed combat before with a fait accompli — those who want to take up arms now have the upper hand,” said Hans De Marie Heungoup from the International Crisis Group. “There’s a real risk of rebellion that could make the Anglophone regions ungovernable.”

The secession issue in Cameroon echoes a global trend spanning from Iraqi Kurdistan and Catalonia in Spain, where leaders this year led thwarted drives for independence, to Africa itself. In neighboring Nigeria there are new calls for a southeastern Biafran state, 50 years after a previous attempt led to a civil war that claimed a million lives. Meanwhile, Kenya’s political opposition, smarting from an election loss they blame on rigging, have warned some regions could seek to secede.

Vital Ports
Cameroon’s English-speaking minority, about a fifth of the population, has complained of marginalization for decades and many highly educated Anglophones have moved abroad. The country, whose roads and ports are vital for landlocked neighbors such as oil-producing Chad, was split after World War I into a French-run zone and a smaller, British-controlled area.

Radical factions of the protest movement in the Northwest and Southwest regions now refer to the area as Ambazonia and discuss armed struggle on social media. About 20 percent of the population in the affected regions is estimated to support secession, according to the Brussels-based International Crisis Group.

The unrest comes as Cameroon’s army struggles to halt a spate of bombings and raids by the Islamist militant organization Boko Haram near the northern border with Nigeria. While Boko Haram forced thousands of Cameroonians to flee their homes last year, the secession campaign poses a much bigger threat to the government, Heungoup said by phone from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.

“Even if Boko Haram killed a lot of people, it was clear from the onset that they would never threaten or capture the state,” he said. “But the Anglophone crisis calls the foundations of the Cameroonian state into question.”

Heavy-handed Response
President Paul Biya, who calls the secessionists criminals, is seeking to extend his 35-year rule in elections next year. Biya is the continent’s second-longest serving head of state, after Teodoro Obiang of neighboring Equatorial Guinea. Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe since 1980, resigned in November.

Some say the radicalization is a result of a heavy-handed government response that’s left dozens of people killed in protests this year and some leaders jailed. While the government initially ignored the crisis, it switched tactics in a bid to suppress the movement. The internet was cut off for several months in the two regions and a nighttime curfew was imposed. Activists responded by organizing general strikes in the biggest towns, leaving schools and businesses closed.

Ambazonia now has a self-proclaimed president, a flag and an official government website. Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland spent five days in Cameroon this month in an attempt to defuse the crisis.

“When this crisis was in its beginning stages, the government thought it could kill a few protesters, arrest others and heavily militarize the North West and South regions for the crisis to be over,” said Shadrack Mbirwang, an activist who claims to be a member of the Ambazonia army. “This time around, we are ready to fight and fight till the restoration of our statehood.”

Alabama Teen Suffers Brain Trauma After Encounter with Police

The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is probing a local police department after grisly photos of a battered and bloodied teen made its rounds on social media this week.

Parents of 17-year-old Ulysses Wilkerson posted photos of their son to Facebook after his violent encounter with Troy police, who they say brutally beat the teen as they put him in handcuffs, according to Newsweek.

“Troy police officers did this to my son while he was in handcuffs,” the boy’s mother, Angela Willams, wrote in a post accompanied by a photo of Wilkerson with a severely swollen face and bloodied nose. “Please share this shit happening in Troy, Al now. I hope that they body camera was on and they haven’t told me shit yet. Please share I’m heading to Birmingham to UAB he has fracture and had to transport to have surgery.”

Her post has since been shared more than 61,000 times.

According to a release from the Alabama SBI, officers arrested the teen Saturday, Dec. 23, after they saw him walk from behind a closed downtown business that night around 11:52 p.m. Officers said they approached but Wilkerson fled on foot, running until officers caught up to him. Authorities said he refused to comply with their order to place his hands behind his back and struggled, at one point appearing to reach for his waistband for a weapon.

That’s when they were forced to use physical force to restrain him, they said.

Wilkerson was transported to University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham and was later released. His father, Ulysses Wilkerson, Jr., said his son suffered multiple injuries as a result of the incident.

“He had trauma to the brain, swelling on the brain, and a cracked eye socket in three different places,” the elder Wilkerson told local station WDHN. “From all over the world, people are commenting they want justice.”

Witness Brittany Patterson, who drove by the scene, said she remembered seeing a lot of blood.

“You could see the swelling of his face you could tell he had a lot of bleeding,” Patterson said. “He looked like he was passed out or maybe in and out of consciousness.”

Wilkerson was charged with obstruction of justice and resisting arrest, both of which were later dropped. After returning to the scene, however, police reportedly recovered a weapon and took it in as evidence, WSFA 12 News reported. The matter is still under investigation.

The teen’s family is now demanding that body and dash cam footage of the incident be released.

Meet The Couple Selling Mumbo Sauce, A Staple In D.C.

Washington, D.C., is known for its passionate politics and monuments to past presidents and other famous historical figures. But many Black residents recognize D.C. by the savory flavor of mumbo sauce. The unique sauce, which tastes like a cross between barbecue and sweet-and-sour sauce, skips ingredients like politics and monuments and leaves a lasting impression of those who eat it.

So when Arsha Jones and husband Charles relocated further out into the Maryland suburbs after having children, she found herself missing the taste of mumbo sauce.

“It was one of those things that was very true to the community,” Arsha Jones said. “It’s one of those hidden staples in the community that everyone knows about, but nobody knows about.”

Wanting her kids to experience one of the central aspects of Black D.C. culture, she decided to create some for her family in 2011.

“Since my kids kinda don’t have that history of growing up in the city, I wanted to give them a taste of what I remember was home,” Jones said. “I based my recipe on the different flavors from around the city.”

“People always said when I was little that someone should bottle this up, and I said I’m just going to do it,” Jones said.

After identifying a retailer that sold bottles wholesale and creating a website, the Joneses began selling mumbo sauce to a small number of loyal customers in May of 2011. They named the business Capital City Mumbo Sauce, after their beloved city.

Now, seven years later, the company has expanded greatly, with sales nearing seven figures. The couple has been able to move the company away from their kitchen and into a warehouse that houses most of their products. They also were able to hire both full-time and part-time employees. They are even tossing around the idea of owning a store that will sell items other than mumbo sauce.

They’re currently in the process of creating a seasoned flour, meant to be used on fried foods, and an all-purpose seasoning as an alternative to the flour.

“We’re definitely looking at complimentary products as well as some seasonal mumbo sauce flavors,” Jones said. “We have a large base that can accommodate more products than we [currently] have.”

But her main goal for the company is to saturate their local market and eventually spread across the East coast.

“The great thing about mumbo sauce, and Washington, D.C., is there is no one food that you associate with Washington, D.C.,” Jones said. “So, we have a prime opportunity to put our product in the position where we are the product of D.C.”

Rapper Prodigy of Mobb Deep Dead at 42

Prodigy, one-half of the iconic rap duo Mobb Deep from Queens, N.Y., has died.
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary N.Y. rap duo Mobb Deep,” Mobb Deep’s publicist said in a statement to Rolling Stone Tuesday, June 20.

“Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis.

As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined.

We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”

Prodigy, who was 42 when he died, formed Mobb Deep with rapper Havoc and the group enjoyed success in the 1990s with hits including “Shook Ones” and the Lil Kim feature, “Quiet Storm.”

They also enjoyed success with “Hey Luv (Anything)” in 2001, which marked a turn away from raw rap toward a more commercial sound.

Prodigy’s last performance was in Las Vegas at the Art of Rap Fest Saturday, June 15.

Natural Hair Bias Is The Latest Tool To Criminalize Black Girls

In Malden, Mass., the long-simmering argument of how appropriate it is for African-American women to style their hair as they choose hit a new crescendo. In an attempt to, as the Mystic Valley Regional Charter School interim director said, “… promotes equity by focusing on what unites and by reducing visible gaps between those of different means,” the school placed a restriction on hair thickness and extensions that seemed to directly contradict U.S. Department of Justice guidelines on race-based policies.

This policy and its uneven enforcement — the school rarely, for example, punishes students for hair color, another dress-code violation — led to the repeat suspensions of African-American female students. Singled out were Mya and Deanna Cook, who have received more than 16 hours’ detention, were removed from their team sports and banned from their proms — all for having braided hair. This has, since the breaking of this story, led to a letter of condemnation from the state’s Attorney General Office, a lawsuit from the ACLU and the school district suspending the controversial policy.

“The policy specifically prohibits ‘shaved lines or shaved sides’ as examples of drastic or unnatural hairstyles, and ‘hair more than 2 inches in thickness or ‘height’’ as an example of hair that is distracting and thus not allowed,” Genevieve Nadeau, the chief of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Division of Civil Rights, wrote.

“These prohibitions appear to specifically reference hairstyles such as ‘fades’ that are commonly worn by Black male students, and ‘afros’ that are most likely to be worn by Black students (both male and female). These styles are not simply fashion choices or trends, but, in addition to occurring naturally in many cases, can be important expressions of racial culture, heritage, and identity.”

Cases such as the one in Mystic Valley seem to go beyond cultural insensitivity and constitute an implicit attack on African-American females’ right to be who they are. A 16-year-old Black student in Montverde, Fla., who happens to have naturally curly hair, was told recently that her hair was a violation of the school’s “no dreadlock” dress-code policy. In 2013, a 12-year-old in Orlando, Fla., was told to either straighten or cut her puffy hair or face expulsion. The student, at the time, was being subjected to bullying by her classmates for her hair.

As profiled by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the Ohio State University, African-American students are more likely to be removed from instruction than their white counterparts for minor infractions such as dress code violations due to implicit bias. In one cited example, Black students in North Carolina public schools were six times more likely to be suspended than white students for dress-code violations. These offenses are, in less-served schools, typically handed over to the police to handle.

Heart Shake is a Korean Easy listening/Electronic pop group based in Seoul.
