A New Beginning

Thanks to the many calls of encouragement for this blog to continue. There will be changes, of name, content and style, shortly.

So to celebrate the new beginning, here's a video of a sunrise over Mabul, Sabah.

It was about 5:35 am. It was truly beautiful, but can someone tell me why does the sun have to rise especially early there? :D

Goodbye

It is with a heavy heart that we bid all of you goodbye. Our resignation from the club takes effect from 30th June 2010.

During our time with this club, we found friendship with the most unlikely of characters. We found friends who gave us laughter and shared idiotic moments, usually with finer liquid sustenance. The good times we shared will serve as great foundation blocks for lifelong memories to be built.

For the laughter we shared, thanks. For the memories you helped us build, we will cherish them for a long, long time. But most of all, for showing us that many people do care about the less fortunate, the environment, the aged, the orphans, you reaffirmed our belief that there are still good people around. Not all is lost. Hope still abounds.

It is time for us to move on, to serve society in other ways. But fear not. Who knows, our paths may cross again someday?

See it, Believe it, Achieve it

Napoleon Hill once said "what ever the mind can conceive, and believe, the mind can achieve".

Since then, a plethora of management gurus weighed in with their own variation of : "Believe to Achieve". What does it mean exactly?

My two cents' worth definition is that you must first see yourself accomplishing a goal you set for yourself, visualise it with as much detail as possible. The reality of what really happened in the past is your memory. A detailed visualisation of what you want is similar to a memory of what really happened.

Then, convince yourself it is possible. Believe it. Trust in yourself that what you see in your mind really happened, and can happen again. Don't you just love a variation of Adidas campaign that goes: "Impossible is just an opinion"?

Once you have truly, truly accepted that you have accomplished it in your mind, doing it in reality is merely a matter of joining the dots.

To wrap things up, imagine one warm evening on 16th August 2008 when one young man stood a short distance behind the starting line, thinking to himself "I can do it, I will do it" over and over again. If he had looked up, this is what he would have seen:

Bird's Nest on 10th April 2010

That young man was Usain Bolt, and the place is the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing. He walked up to the starting blocks on lane No. 4. The starting gun went off, and 9.69 seconds later, Usain Bolt became the fastest man in the world.

At the starting blocks, he saw the finishing line. He really believed he would be the one crossing the finishing line first. And history proved him right.

See it, Believe it, Achieve it. I rest my case.

Earth Day 2010

The EHC invites you to celebrate EARTH DAY 20 April 2010, at a time when the human race on planet Earth is in danger of being wiped out one day due to risk of overheating, warming, and ever threatening carbon emission.

All you have to do is join us in the activity in old newspaper collection organised by the Environmental & Humanities Committee of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee.

If you, your family or friends have old newspapers bring it to the ground floor of KLBC (Wisma Kraftangan, 9 Jalan Tun Perak, 50050 Kuala Lumpur) tomorrow, from 10.00am to 3.00pm. Get others to support our activity too. All proceeds will be utilised for green projects in future as we are running out of oxygen. In conjunction with this, EHC also calls on those responsible to stop felling the trees like nobody's business.

Earth Hour 2010

On an average life-span of 70 years, each of us would have lived more than 613,200 hours.

We would have slept an average of 153,300 hours, wasted 12,775 hours in the bathroom (give or take another 12,765 hours, depending on whether you are a member of the fairer sex) and spent 8,517 hours on doing what the birds and bees do naturally (give or take another 8,507 hours, depending on whether you are ... err, I give up, but you get the picture).

Given all that time we are spending on ourselves, what's ONE hour a year, I hear you ask? The answer: a lot.

On 8:30 pm, Saturday 27th March 2010 the world will witness Earth Hour 2010.

Last year, during Earth Hour 2009, Susan and I spent one hour in darkness. I will have to think of something better this year.

On 28/2/2010, a bunch of us went to Rumah Cahaya.

This is my 4th visit to Rumah Cahaya. Fortunately, everyone is still accounted for, phew !!!

In this Home for the Elderly, everyone looked about 70. So, everyone making through another year is a feat.

We cooked a more or less vegetarian meal, and each one of us had one elderly folk each to entertain while they had lunch. Don't worry, no one choked. Anyway we had Dr Rodwin who is handy with the Heimlich Manoeuvre.

Ants and Life

One morning I wasted nearly an hour watching a tiny ant carry a huge feather across my back terrace. Several times it was confronted by obstacles in its path and after a momentary pause, it would make the necessary detour.

At one point, the ant had to negotiate a crack in the concrete about 10mm wide. After brief contemplation, the ant laid the feather over the crack, walked across it and picked up the feather on the other side then continued on its way.

I was fascinated by the ingenuity of this ant, one of God's smallest creatures. It served to reinforce the miracle of creation. Here was a minute insect, lacking in size yet equipped with a brain to reason, explore, discover and overcome.

But this ant, like the two-legged co-residents of this planet, also shares human failings. After some time the ant finally reached its destination - a flower bed at the end of the terrace and a small hole that was the entrance to its underground home.

And it was here that the ant finally met its match.

How could that large feather possibly fit down a small hole? Of course it couldn't. So the ant, after all this trouble and exercising great ingenuity, overcoming problems all along the way, just abandoned the feather and went home.

The ant had not thought the problem through before it began its epic journey and, in the end, the feather was nothing more than a burden.

Isn't OUR LIFE like that..?

We worry about our family; we worry about money or the lack of it, we worry about work, about where we live, about all sorts of things.

These are all burdens - the things we pick up along life's path and lug them around the obstacles and over the crevices that life will bring, only to find that, at the destination, they are useless and we can't take them with us....

In ancient Greece, scholar and philosopher Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem.

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and wanted to tell it to you." "All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"

"No, on the contrary, it is bad."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really," replied the man, now more than a little embarrassed.

"Well," concluded Socrates, if what you want to tell me is neither true, nor good, and nor even useful to me, why tell it to me at all?"

Massive Earthquake Hits Chile

An earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale hit Chile off the coast of Maule, about 320 km southwest of Santiago on 27/2/10. As at 1540 GMT, the threat of a tsunami hitting Chile is receding, but French Polynesia is about to get hit by the tsunamis generated by the earthquake.

As people around the Pacific Rim from Russia to Australia face a tsunami alert, we on this luckier part of the world are going to bed with a prayer that people everywhere evacuate safely out of harm's way in time. First Haiti, now this. Sigh.

My last thought today: could this earthquake have been avoided by a successful conclusion of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December 2009?

Most probably not, but I hope politicians everywhere should sit up and take note. You know it. Mother Nature is angry.
