Prominent examples are neurotransmitters, cytokine receptors, tyrosine kinase receptors, ligang-and voltage-gated ion channels, G protein-coupled receptors, and antibody receptors. Interactions with these receptors are of special importance not only to academics, but also to the pharmaceutical industry as almost half of the 100 best-selling drugs on the market are targeted to a membrane receptor. More than 50% of current drug targets are membrane bound.Naturally, there is a great interest in development of sensors using membrane proteins for drug discovery and high-throughput screening for detection of pathogens/toxins. This book describes protocols to array individual, intact small unilamellar vesicles (liposomes) onto chemically modified microwell substrates. These arrays can be used as biosensors using membrane proteins or receptors incorporated in the lipid bilayer of the arrayed liposomes. One of the key examples covered in this work is the use of this platform to display GM1 ganglioside receptor to detect cholera toxin in analyte solutions.

It covers all aspects of liposome technology, including liposome preparation and analysis, drug entrapment, and techniques used for in vivo and in vitro evaluation of liposomes. Leading authorities have contributed 70 chapters to create what is destined to be the standard liposome technology book for the 1990s. Many of the chapters describe methodologies practiced in authors' laboratories and provide specific examples of how these methodologies are applied in specific circumstances. Liposome Technology, Second Edition will be an essential reference volume for academic and industrial researchers in pharmacology, pharmacy, medicine, biochemistry, and immunology. What's new in the 2nd Edition? The 2nd Edition covers significant developments in liposome technology that have occurred since the publication of the 1st Edition in 1982. These developments include the following:· New preparative procedures· Special approaches to accommodate the incorporation of certain drugs· New targeting techniques· Large scale production of liposomes, patents, and clinical trials

Topics range from a discussion of EFA basic mechanisms to their effects on individual psychiatry and behavior, and include extensive coverage of pathology, DHA in CNS development, and phospholipid and fatty acid composition and metabolism. Comprehensive and forward-looking, Fatty Acids: Physiological and Behavioral Functions reviews and critically evaluates our current knowledge of EFA, setting the stage for oncoming wave of discovery about the biochemical and molecular functions of essential fatty acids, as well as their critical role in human physiology, immunology, and behavior.</p>
