This wood aged stout is like the “Big Foot” imperial stouts. By that I mean that is has a huge, powerful, aggressive flavor now that is extremely impressive and enjoyable but, if you are patient and want a smoother more supple brew and you can wait a year or two, this is going to be rich, smooth, with intensely rich flavors. Big dark roast character in the form of dark chocolate, espresso and a touch of molasses. The wood aging comes through with oak vanilla and a touch of bourbon. The tannins from all of the dark malt and wood has a bit of sharp but not an unwelcome characteristic this early in the game and should meld into the other flavors with time. The hops are quite pronounced and bitter now. Like in Big Foot this not a bad thing and if you’re a hophead now is the time to drink. If on the other hand you like things a touch more mellow the bitterness will drop quickly over the next 8 to 12 months. This is the PERFECT aging beer. Great now. Great a year or two from now and AWSOME 4 or 5 down the road. I only have five cases so get it while ye may.

The winter version of their Imperial Pale is everything the C-Note is plus a smattering of darker malts. It produces a dark amber / brown brew with a thin head but some great lacing. The nose is floral with the promise of some extrodanary hop flavors to come. The malt comes though early from some dark crystal but the flavor quickly moves to the hops. The hops come though with a mélange of floral, citrus, pine and a grassy bitter finish. As it states on the bottle “In hops we trust”…… so true.

Nectar Ales Black Xanthus 22oz:

This wood aged 11%er is rich black / brown and opaque. It pours with a tan head. The nose has wood tones of vanilla, tobacco and oak. The flavor is smooth with coffee, vanilla, cocoa, a little bourbon, a litter earth, and a solid hop underpinning. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy but the finish ends bitter. Check out the video….

Big Sky Biere De Noel 750ml:

This wonderful beer from the guys who brought you Moose Drool, is a straight up Belgian double style. It pours a solid brown hue with a voluminous rocky head. The aroma is slightly sweet with candied fruit and chocolate tones. Supple mouth feel and toffee and chocolate flavors with hints of dark inverted candy sugar. The hops are in there someplace but the focus of the brew is the rich sweet malt flavors.

Black as night with roasty chocolate nutty flavors. Dark, complex and delicious, a strong, flavorful Oatmeal stout. Enough hops to balance the large amounts of dark and roasted malts, with the addition of oatmeal creating a creamy smooth drinkability.

This ESB has a great, easy, and appropriate malting. The hops are there and coexist with the malt well. The hard thing to find in this area of the country is an ESB that is not over hopped. SOB has done a great job of this and the finish is crisp and ultra clean.

Brown with an amber tint to it, this Christmas beer has plenty of carbonation and a very large head. The aroma is of fig, date and cherry with the brown malts coming off as cake. The flavor is big on the fruits (cherry, dates and raisins) with a spice cake in the middle and a light hopping at the end. This beer being rich, fruity and strong (10%) this is what Belgian beer is all about.

Bright copper in color this beer pours with a large head that settles down into a thin layer with some lace. The aroma is of crystal malt, herbal / earthy hops with orange and spice. The flavor is toasty with orange peel, spicy clove, candy sugar, caramel and earthy hops. This is a great souped up Biere de garde.

Ummmmm, now this is a winter / Christmas beer to savor and cherish. Dark brown in color with mahogany around the edges. The head is very persistent with some amazing lace. That aroma is of heavenly chocolate covered spiced cherries. The flavor, like the aroma, is chocolate along with some same dark fruit and star anise. Do not serve this too cold, as it would do it a great disservice.

An opaque medium brown color that pours with a sticky tan foam. The aroma is hoppy with citrus rind and a bit of chocolate cookie dough from the malt. The flavor is hoppy with oily grapefruit with some restrained caramel and spice. A great Christmas beer that has more hop presence than most of its imported brethren.

This winter Belgian is exactly what I expect out of one of the finest craft breweries in Belgium. Big sweet, fruity with a spice hit. The color is a yellow orange with two fingers worth of head. The aroma is sweet with spicy coriander, orange and ginger. The flavor is sweet and a tad doughy with cherry and prunes. The spice comes through in the flavor as well and also includes a bit of clove, cardamom and hop bitterness. DO NOT serve this cold or you will end up with a metallic taste, you have been warned!

Great Divide Hibernation Ale 12oz:

This “Old Ale” is brewed in July and aged until October. This gives it a deep malty smooth character with big roasty tones and a well-developed and complex hop presence due to the aging and subsequent dry hopping.

La Rulles Cuvee Melleurs Voeux 750ml:

This bottle conditioned winter ale pours orange with a bit of brown. The head rolls out large but settles to just a whisp. The aroma is malty with a touch of roastiness and figs with orange peel at the end. The flavor is fruity orange with sweeter brown malts that give it cocoa hint and finished with a juniper, piney hop. Serve at cellar temp (55) or above. This beer has a nice set of flavors that blend well at warmer temps but the not too sweet malt gets cut out if it is too cold.

Are you prepared to jump head long into The Abyss??? This beer has sooooo much going on it takes several sips to get a handle on it all. First and foremost it is an imperial stout of the highest caliber. Not sweet, this 11% stout has only a hint a caramel. The predominant flavors are of roasted barley, licorice, and molasses. Light bitter hop finish with a bit of a drying bite from the black malts and licorice and a spicy alcohol hit at the end. If that were not enough all of this has been aged in French oak and Bourbon casks. The oak an bourbon tones meld perfectly with the molasses and roasty flavors, none predominating the other. Superb A++.

BrewDog has once again blown other beer brands out of the water with the unveiling of the most ambitious brews by any drinks brand in over 200 years - Atlantic IPA.

After two tempestuous months aging aboard BrewDog founder James Watt"s mackerel trawler on the North Atlantic, Atlantic IPA will be the first commercially available, genuine sea-aged IPA in two centuries - a project which is typical of the scale, audacity and boldness characteristic of BrewDog in its quest to take the UK beer industry by storm.

James was given an 1856 "Brewer"s Handbook" as a gift last Christmas which contained an even older original IPA hoppy recipe - which provided inspiration for him to embark on BrewDog"s latest voyage of creating waves in an otherwise flat beer market. The following month (January 2009), he set off on a journey on his fishing trawler in the North Atlantic with eight barrels on-board, each containing beer brewed from the original recipe.

Atlantic IPA (and James!) survived two months on the North Atlantic, involving a tense barrel-rescue-mission, beatings from force ten storms, 60 foot waves and encounters with killer whales. Upon safe return to dry land, the IPA was bottle conditioned and is now available at www.brewdog.com and Uto Beer, Real Ale (both London), Cornelius (Edinburgh) Beer Ritz (Leeds).

The beer also features a stunning, custom hand-drawn label by young Scottish Desinger Johanna Basford. The hand-drawn label depicts the cask"s perilous journey in the stormy seas. Originating in the 1700s, India Pale Ales were developed in Britain and sent by sea to British people living in India. The beers travelled inside oak casks on board sailing vessels however the lack of refrigeration and tempestuous sea journeys often compromised the quality. India Pale Ale was born when brewers realised that together, hops and alcohol act as a natural preservative ensuring that the beer could withstand the voyage and arrive in good condition.

James Watt, BrewDog"s Head of Stuff, said "Today the term IPA has lost its meaning and UK brewers mainly use it to describe beers which are neither particularly hoppy or high in alcohol, Duecher"s IPA at 3.8% being a prime example of the complete butchering of the style. It"s sad to see the great IPA heritage in this country come to stand for nothing more than a sparingly hopped low ABV blonde session ale.

"We wanted to take the style back to its roots and we have created the first genuine, commercially available IPA for 2 centuries. Going beyond the realms of what would normally be deemed possible in order to deliver is what we"re all about at Brew Dog.
