I'm back...

Finally, finally, I've written a new novella. It has been way too long. With this new story, I am hoping to get back in the swing of writing. I was given the task of writing sloth, one of the seven deadly sins. After a week of delibrating, I came up with a story outline. Before I knew it, "Death Throes" was written and polished.

For my part, Chris Pourteau, a fellow author and member of Goodreads Paranormal and Horror Lovers, which I am the moderator, asked me to spread the word on his new book and project. Writing for a Cause: Pets for Vets and Tails of the Apocalypse

There are a number of unique aspects of this anthology, but the thing I’m most proud of is our partnership with Pets for Vets.

That’s how author-editor Chris Pourteau talks about his latest project, Tails of the Apocalypse. Described as The Walking Dead meets The Incredible Journey, the collection includes short stories written by 14 of today’s most innovative independent authors. Tails of the Apocalypse examines world-ending scenarios—from nuclear war to natural disasters to planetary pandemics—featuring animals as main characters.

The idea came to Pourteau last spring after publishing his own short story, “Unconditional” about a dog searching for his boy, lost to the zombie apocalypse. The overwhelmingly positive response from readers made him think that maybe he’d hit a cultural nerve. And the idea for Tails of the Apocalypse was born.

Over the next six months, he recruited his writers--including four USA Today bestselling authors--edited their stories, developed cover art, and produced an anthology that R. J. Pineiro, author of The Fall calls: “one of the most original and captivating collections of end-of-the-world ‘tails,’ shown through the eyes of an amazing cast of unforgettable furry and feathered characters.”

Giving Tails a Purpose
Even as the anthology took shape, Pourteau felt like he was missing something. The point of these wonderful stories about animals caught up in dystopian situations was about giving voice to those without the ability to speak for themselves. He decided he wanted to donate some of the profits from his self-funded project to an organization that helped animals.
It was one of his authors, David Bruns, also a US Navy vet, who suggested Pets for Vets. From the beginning, it was great fit.

The name and the mission of the non-profit immediately resonated with Pourteau. And as Bruns and Pourteau have worked to drum up awareness of their project, they’ve found that the cause resonates with others as well.

Founded by animal trainer Clarissa Black, Pets for Vets matches shelter dogs with military veterans. Personnel train the animals as special companions for veterans suffering from emotional trauma, like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“Three to four million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each year,” says Ann Black, president of Pets for Vets. “And it’s estimated that 20 percent of returning vets suffer from PTSD. Bringing them together provides a loving home for the pet and a caring companion for the vet. It’s a win-win.”

The Big Idea
Pourteau plans to donate $1.00 to Pets for Vets from every copy of Tails of the Apocalypse sold through the end of the calendar year, regardless of format—e-book, paperback, or audiobook. “I’m honored that Pets for Vets allowed us to adopt them as a cause,” Pourteau says. “My goal now is to write them a big check on January 1st.”

Two dear authors friends, Rebecca Nolan and Emily Joyner, and I have been talking about Wattpad on and off for a few months. I wanted to post chapters of Black Legacy on the site to get some feedback and, hopefully, build a following. Before I did this, I needed book cover art. The thought frightened me. I didn't have the right software, the knowledge or experience to use the software, or know where to go to get the images. There are pre-made book covers on Wattpad that are no more than a picture of a tree or some other trivial object. Book covers are the first thing readers see. It should catch the eye and relate to the book. I wanted my book cover to have all this and more.

Completely forgotten to me, my husband told me we had Photoshop and that I could probably use it to make the cover. After I confirmed that we indeed had the software--even though it was an older version--I spent hours and days scanning the internet for images. I settled on a few and spent four more hours trying to get them to overlap properly. My computer kept freezing, which made the process frustrating to say the least. In the end, I created a mediocre book cover.

Minutes later, I was chatting with Emily and Rebecca. Have I mentioned that they are two of a few of my biggest cheerleaders? Among other talents, Emily makes beautiful books covers. We had spoke about Black Legacy's cover but it wasn't until that moment that she got inspiration for the right combination. Ten minutes later, she presented me with my book cover.

And what a cover it is!

So I don't have a big build up for the cover or a slue of bloggers sharing it. I do, however, think it is amazing and hope you like it too. Without further delay, I present Emily Joyner's creation for my novel, Black Legacy.

Oh my freakin' gosh!?! My sleep is so messed up.

I just got back from Las Vegas not even eighteen hours ago. We went with another couple. For my husband and I, it was a celebration of our twentieth wedding anniversary. We slept little. The three hour time zone changes didn't help but as the saying goes, "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". Besides, that isn't what this story is about.

The same day my plane landed from a red eye flight and I arrived home, I felt like the walking dead. That was until 8:30 pm when a second wind sent me into overdrive. I knew I needed sleep, morning obligations would arrive too fast. I was determined to unwind. I read a little then dozed off for ten minutes while lying on the sofa around 11:30 pm. I woke intending to stagger to bed. That was when I spotted him, GODZILLA SPIDER: aka the black dot on the pic. I know he doesn't look like much because his legs are all tucked in but he is a big...and fat...and fast!

And he was blocking my path!

After a gymnastic-like move over the back of the sofa, I found the perfect use for my old telephone books. I had considered recycling them because, hey, the internet worked just fine for my telephone informational needs. Armed with the thicker of two telephone books, I crept closer to Godzilly. He dashed under the sofa. Damnit! Luckily, he came out the other end, leaving the perfect shot for me. I threw the book at him again. Grr! He darted again. Did I mention he was fast? Heart pounding and cursing loud enough to wake the sleeping house, I whipped the book at him. He once again ran. Well crap! On my third attempted, after a stare down of wills, the book landed on him. In stocking feet, I leaped on the book and stomped. I added a second book, stomped, and twisted as if doing the jig. Gingerly, I nudged the telephone books aside. Godzilly darted. WTH!?! I grabbed the nearby dictionary and slammed the books spine on the spider until I heard a splat. He curled and finally, thankfully stilled. *Note the above picture.*

I inhaled a deep breath. I was wide awake, staring at Godzilly's carcass. I decided to leave him for my husband to clean up in the morning. What? Don't roll your eyes at me. You can't expect me to have that kind of energy.

Now what? Feeling pressure in my bladder, I went to the bathroom to relieve myself. I came back and grabbed my Kindle. Hand outstretched for the sofa's armrest with my eyes traveling toward Godzilly's remains, I froze. WTH!?! Godzilla spider must have nine freakin' lives! And he is trying to give me a heart attack.

If he had been outside, I wouldn't have tried to kill him with telephone books or a thick dictionary. In fact I would have left him alone. Spiders keep the bug population down. I knew this but was different. He entered my house, my domain, where I ate and slept. What if he crawled in my mouth while I snored on that sofa? The repulsive thought sent shivers over my arms.

This was war!

I became the incredible hawk. Chairs went flying. Then I spotted him. I wasn't wasting time with books this time. No, my weapon of choice was death by spray. I aimed and didn't stop until Godzilly and the area was covered in a thick, white foam.

Godzilly lifted a leg and then stiffened. Three hours later I stumbled up to bed without a creepy crawler crossing my dreams.

At the crack of dawn, my daughter, who was fanatically racing to make her bus, asked me to pull her hair in a ponytail. Rubbing my groggy eyes one by one, I went to the bathroom to retrieve the brush when, OMG, GODZILLA SPIDER'S Dad came looking for him. With legs outstretched Daddy-o sat between the toilet and the pedal stool sink. Cussing with a jolt of gotcha-now-you-are-awake, I lunged for the spider spray. I aimed and pushed the button down hard. Daddy-o never moved. Huh? I shrugged. This was good.

My son walked passed, saying deadpan, "He's already dead. Gram sprayed him before you woke up.'

Well, I thought, I guess leaving carcasses runs in the family.

]]><![CDATA[What's going on with Black Legacy?]]>Fri, 13 Jun 2014 21:36:48 GMThttp://lisagoldman.weebly.com/blog/whats-going-on-with-black-legacyFirst, I'd like to apologize for my low in blogging. I hadn't realized it's been so long. I could bog you down by giving you my many "life" got in the way issues. We all have those so, for now, I'll give a big wave and say, "Howdy."

"Well, what have you been doing?" you ask.

Great question. I finished writing and editing the third novel to the Black Legacy series, which is called Blood Trails. It will be off to my beta readers in the next few days.

What? I hear those grumbles. And yes, I know I haven't published Black Legacy or Keeper of the Spirits, the first and second novels to the series. There are reasons for this. First and foremost, I don't want to disappoint you, my reader.

Let me give you a background explanation. The series will have a total of five books. With the first three books written, I am now concentrating on the final two books. I mapped out the beginning, parts of the middle, and the end of each book. My ideas need to be outlined in a particular order. Yes, I prefer to use an outline. I also need to make sure I know what each character is doing. I haven't gotten that far in these final books. This is where my self-doubts erupt. Since I am still relatively new as an author, I want to make I can finish the series before I publish Black Legacy.

I've been in that Will, Adrian, Camille withdrawn too. You know the one, right? It happens when you finish reading a book and have fallen in love with the characters. One tiny problem, the next book in the sequel isn't published yet. What if the author doesn't know where the next book is going? How long will it take to be in your hands? Months? Years?

I'm not saying the final books in the Black Legacy series fall into the "will it ever be written category" because I do know most of what will happen, just not the order. Until I at minimum have solid outlines, you'll have to wait. Don't fret though, it also means you may not have to wait as long between books once the first book is published.

I've also been spending my time building my social network sites and researching indie publishers, traditional publishers, self publishing, agents, marketing, and more. I have flip-flopped between which way I want to publish. I'll probably go with an indie or small press publisher and have narrowed it down to a few favorites. If you have worked with a publisher and loved them, I'd love to hear from you. I'm keeping my options open.

Fox Brook Book Club

Attention, attention: Authors, are you looking for more exposure for your book or books? Consider contacting me.

I am a member and help run the Fox Brook Book Club. It is local to me and hosted in someone's home. We hold quarterly meetings, sometimes more frequent, to socialize and discuss a book. We have thirty-one members and anywhere from six to twenty-five people usually attend a meeting. Often this depends on people's schedules. What I proposed is that, if possible, I'd like to interview the authors of the books we read. Questions may range to about the book to your other works you have to, well, a little about you.

We, the book club, are NOT asking for a discount on your book, only that if chosen that we can interview you. At this time, because this is new to us, I would like interviews to be done via email. I am considering Skype or radio as a possibility but am not rolling that out yet.

I am hoping to gather most questions and email them to you, the author, at least a week prior to our meeting so the answers will be returned and available to share at the book club meeting, although we may have a few afterward too. After the interview and meeting, I will post the questions and answers on this blog, which, in turn, rolls over to my Facebook and Twitter pages.

A list of books and authors willing to be interviewed, for which a hostess from the book club can read and choose, will be compiled. Books may be chosen based on genre and interests, although it is possible that not every book will be chosen. The list will be on-going.

As well as the interview, the extra book sales, and the added publicity, I will give your book an honest review, which will be post here on my blog, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords. Some of the other club members may post reviews too.

Welcome Tara Fox Hall! I'm so excited to have you here.
Before we start the interview I'd like to tell you a little about her. She is an OSHA-certified safety and health inspector at a metal fabrication shop in upstate New York. She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a double minor in chemistry and biology from Binghamton University. Her writing credits include nonfiction short stories, flash, short and novella-length horror stories, and contemporary and historical paranormal romance. Her horror stories have appeared in Deadman’s Tome, Flashes in the Dark, Ghastly Door, The Halloween Alliance, Black Petals, SNM Horror Magazine, Microhorror, Dark Eclipse, Cemetery Moon, and various anthologies, including the recently published charity works Fear (Vol. 1) and Shifters. She also coauthored the essay “The Allure of the Serial Killer,” published in Serial Killers - Philosophy for Everyone: Being and Killing (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010). She is the author of the paranormal fantasy Lash series and the paranormal romantic drama Promise Me series. Tara divides her free time unequally between writing novels and short stories, chainsawing firewood, caring for stray animals, sewing cat and dog beds for donation to animal shelters, and target practice.

You have quite the long list of credits. Why do you write about vampires, like you have in your novel Promise Me?
I’ve loved vampires since I saw Frank Langella in the first “hot vampire” version of Dracula years ago. That love intensified in my later teens with The Lost Boys, and reading Interview with the Vampire, along with anything vampire I could get my hands on. But I wanted more than the evil monster chasing young virgins; more than the sweet, misunderstood handsome fanged stranger that becomes the perfect mate for the woman who captures his heart after so many lone centuries. I wanted a vampire so well-crafted in detail that I could believe he was real. I wanted something different to happen in the story, other than girl becomes vampire, or vampire becomes dust. I wanted passion, tragedy, romance, suspense, action, and the haunting sweetness of poetry and song floating on a soft night breeze. So I penned my own vampires.

What other types of genres do you write?
Mostly I write supernatural-related fiction stories, such as the paranormal fiction series Promise Me and Lash. But as per above, I also have written erotica, suspense, horror, contemporary fiction, and non-fiction.

Tell me about your latest?
My latest book is Taken for His Own, the fourth installment in my Promise Me Series. It takes up where the third book left off. Sar had done her best to rebuild her life when her fiancé Theo went missing. She’s partnered with her former vampire lover Danial to raise Theo’s daughter Elle (Elle’s natural mother is dead from childbirth complications). She’s also had a child of her own with Danial, Theoron, and is trying to come to terms with her inevitable turning from human to vampire. When she finds out Theo’s alive, she can’t stop herself from journeying west to find him, and confront him about where he’s been for the last year and a half. This is where Taken for His Own begins. After a passionate reunion and a hasty marriage, the two
lovebirds are headed back east. But picking up the pieces is far from easy. While Danial is accepting of Theo’s return, Elle prefers her vampire adoptive father over Theo. More than one enemy is waiting in the wings, making repeat attempts on Sar’s life. Add into the mix Devlin, Sar’s old enemy who’s now turned good guy, and a new paramour for Danial and you’ve got a powder keg primed to explode.

Is there a particular book that changed or affected your life in a big way?
The Hobbit. I like the message; that it’s not who you were or what you can do that influences what you will do, it’s how willing you are to step outside your own boundaries and push for what you think is right.

Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp?
That it’s never too late to take control of your destiny…and that you are the only one that really ever can. You may not be able to control what happens to you, but you can always control how you react to events. And that it’s important to always try to do the right thing…but that isn’t always possible.

What challenges have you faced in your writing career?
Getting published. I spent 4 years getting rejection after rejection from every agent under the sun and also some publishers. But the near misses were the worst, to think that I finally had an agent or a publisher and then to have it fall through at the last moment. Those were the crushing blows. The newest thing I worry about are bad reviews.

Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Bits of me are in all my characters, being my creations.

Have you ever had a day when you just wanted to quit?
Of course. Getting my first 2 star review on Amazon made me want to quit. Poor sales in a given quarter makes me want to quit. Having no free time makes me want to quit. But I didn’t survive years of fighting to get my stories out to give up now.

Did you have a moment when you realized you were meant to be a writer?
Yes. I realized I was good at imagining both sides of a conversation between two characters or more. It’s something that comes naturally and I don’t feel affinity with either character especially, so I can imagine to be both with equal believability. That makes really good dialogue, which is an essential part of any story. The other key part of story is a good plot. When I’m reading what I wrote, I ask myself if I’m interested at every paragraph. If I can’t keep my own interest, how can I expect to keep a reader’s interest? And what a writer wants to produce and what a reader wants to read are not always the same things. To gain—and keep—series readers, you have to give them what they want while keeping enough back to entice them to keep reading subsequent books. I try to do that.

After this book, what is next?
There will be more books in this series. Two more will be out this year--Immortal Confessions and Her Secret—with more in 2014 and 2015, until the series is done. The next
installment in the Lash Series, Revenge, will be out this fall, and hopefully my second anthology of short suspense/horror stories will also publish. There will also be the first Promise Me anthology and a Latham’s Landing anthology this fall. A new Lash short story,
“Spiritwalker”, will debut in the Shifters charity anthology from
Hazardous Press, and I also have a short story called “The Lie” in the upcoming
anthology Brief Grislys, both due out in a month or less. I’m also working on a sequel to my transgender short Grow a Pair, and another compilation of BDSM stories for the late summer/fall.
