Space Detective

Whatever the size or shape of your kitchen, you need to think carefully about the amount of storage space you and your family needs, not just now, but also in the future. It’s essential that you consider this early on in the design stage to make sure the kitchen you choose works for you. The all-important aesthetics of the kitchen can be decided on later, however adding vital storage space isn’t something you can easily do retrospectively.

One of the golden rules of good kitchen design is to start in the corner. This is an area of the room that is notoriously difficult to ensure that the available storage space is maximised and easily accessible. However, with the Mackintosh kitchen range, they have cleverly designed units that will help to overcome this common problem.

If you want a normal corner unit, then you can choose from the range of standard corner base units, however, this has an area of the unit at the back that, due to tricky access, is invariably used for storing items that you rarely use. To resolve this, Mackintosh corner units can include clever wirework, such as the magic corner or le-mans pull-out storage solutions that, with ingenious design, provides full access to the unit. Alternatively, you can opt for an L-shaped corner unit, which, once opened, provides significant and easily accessible storage.

An upcoming trend, especially in modern and contemporary kitchen design, is to use a full height corner larder or pantry unit. This fully maximises the storage space available by making use of the dead space that would normally be between the wall and base units. With a corner larder unit, the space at the back of the unit is much easier to access, without having to bend down, and the clever chaps at Mackintosh have also included four le-mans wirework solutions that allows gaining access to the back of the unit that much easier.

Thinking about the number of drawers you need, and what you will put in them, is also important. Kitchen design has evolved from a cluttered, drawer line look, where every base unit has a drawer at the top, to a more minimal design and practical solution. Drawer units, with deeper drawers and accessories are now commonplace, and by using a drawer unit that has internal drawers, you can make sure you have exactly the right amount of drawer storage, but without the messy lines that can interrupt the flow of a modern, contemporary kitchen.

Another interesting trend is the increasing use of bi-fold units. These units take a standard wall unit, but instead of opening from the side, they open from the bottom. This type of unit is perfect for use in the kitchen, where keeping a unit open whilst cooking makes the job so much simpler, without the risk of hitting your head on the door or constantly opening and closing the unit to get ingredients.

As with most home improvement projects, fully understanding your requirements and planning for these in the design stage will make the whole process a lot simpler, giving you everything you need and the kitchen you’ve been dreaming of.

I’m always being asked what’s the latest ‘in-thing’ to make a new kitchen extra special. Kitchen design is like any other form of fashion – it’s constantly changing and evolving with fresh thinking which delivers even more originality and style, whilst never losing sight of the fact that the ‘heart of the home’ has to be practical and functional too. What’s going to be setting the trend, with style and functionality? Top of the class is going to be glass! Everything from kitchen doors clad in gloss or satin glass in a spectrum of colours to your kitchen tap. While glass splash-backs are already a hit in the UK, there’s no end to how glass will feature in this year’s kitchen designs. Ask your kitchen specialist about creating a bespoke design just for you and take a look at Decoglaze for some great ideas, too. So, that else should you be thinking about for your new kitchen?

Cupboard Love

There are two ways most people go with storage – not enough or far too much. Get a happy medium. Never include cupboards for cupboards' sake. If there is a wall you really don’t have to fill, then don’t. Be meticulous and really work out the amount of cupboard space you’ll need by taking into account all your pots and pans, baking and roasting trays, Tupperware, cutlery, dry foods, among others.

Be Prepared

You can never have enough preparation space, but make it count! Make sure all small appliances, music systems, TVs, etc, are integrated where possible to maximise the preparation space available. Think about the height of the work surfaces if members of the household are either particularly short or tall – cabinet heights can be tweaked to make the work surface more accessible to prevent stooping or overreaching.

Light Up Your Life

Lighting can make or break a kitchen design, so pay particular attention to both task and ambient lighting. Always use LED lamps throughout – your lighting scheme should always be designed alongside your kitchen not as an afterthought.

Help is at Hand

Getting an expert on board is crucial to fully realise your new kitchen’s potential. Even if you think you are 100 per cent happy with the layout and design you or your architect has worked on, a kitchen designer can bring a whole plethora of options, ideas and suggestions to the table. They can also potentially save you time and money in the bigger picture. Before instructing a kitchen designer always check out their signature style and design portfolio – it is crucial that both the designer and client are on the same wavelength. Be prepared to pay for this service, though.

Something's cooking

Consider airborne odour from your appliances, especially for open-plan kitchens. Soft seating and fabrics should always be washable – in a year, the equivalent of a packet of lard will settle on work surfaces, blinds and soft furnishings in a typical family kitchen. The Big Heat

Depending on your budget and stage of build, consider either water or electric underfloor heating controlled via an electronic thermostat. If you are using radiators make sure they have thermostatic valves installed. It is important to be able to control the temperature of your kitchen, to avoid getting hot under the collar.

Furthermore, Krushr recycling bins can take care of all waste by combining a waste disposal with a compactor. All your ‘wet’ waste can be disposed with down the sink via the waste disposal while ‘clean’ waste such as jars, tins, plastic and cardboard can be sorted and compacted.

Once upon a time, the kitchen was a space solely for preparing food. Nowadays, you're hard-pushed to used the term kitchen at all. The phrase living space feels like a more accurate description.

The shift is particularly noticeable when it comes to new-build and extension plans. Architects are now including substantial areas for a multi-purpose space in their plans. A good kitchen designer - not to be confused with a planner - will help create a great space that works for the way you actually live. When creating your dream living space, here are the key things to think about:

Clever Zoning

Designers are creating 'zones for cooking, entertaining, relaxing and working - often now enhanced by large bi-fold doors and roof lanterns to allow for plenty of natural light.

Extraction Excellence

If you want a space to be more than just a food preparation zone, it is essential to put effective extraction in place. Airborne odour and grease needs to be effectively removed. Siemens, Neff and Elica now have wifi capability on a selection of their induction hobs and chimney hoods, allowing both appliances to communicate with each other to achieve the perfect air extraction. An induction hob and extractor in one eliminates the need for a second appliance.

Finish first

Glamorous and opulent, metallic finishes are having a moment, Siemens' top of the range studioLine collection has been relaunched with a stunning gunmetal grey finish to complement the metallic trend. Sleek flush handles create a super-stylish finish. You'll find these on Neff ovens, for a smoother look and Fisher and Paykel have launched flush handles on their refrigeration range too.

Technological advances mean an increasing amount of choice in practical and beautiful work surfaces such as Dekton, which is highly impervious, robust and available in a number of finishes. painted doors are still going strong with increasing demand for deep indigo and blue-grey. Mirror gold doors and bronze mirrored effect cabinets on islands can be stunning.

Don't Overlook the Laundry

A laundry room is often used just as much as the kitchen, but is sometimes an afterthought when completing your house design. As an extension to the kitchen, they can be beautiful spaces; we're seeing an increasing demand for laundry rooms on the first floor as well as the ground floor. Neff integrated washing machines are now so quiet that they have an interactive time light that projects onto the floor so you can see, at a glance, the progress of your wash without having to open your furniture door.

Light up

Never underestimate the importance of effective zonal lighting to enhance your living space. Don't leave it until the last minute in the design process. It's crucial to the success of the project. Consider it at the beginning of the design. Once again, the metallic look is very much in demand.

Trend on Tap

This year will see the bathroom industry’s international ISH trade fair in Frankfurt. It’s the world’s biggest showcase for innovative bathroom design, energy efficient heating and air conditioning technology and renewable energies. Looking ahead, here are my predictions for trends and new technologies over the next 12 months.

Healing hydrotherapy

Our increasing quest for a healthy way of life has put the spotlight on the natural healing power of water. Not a new concept, hydrotherapy has been used for centuries to treat chronic pain, local inflammation and to improve the circulation as well as reducing stress. While a warm bath is the ultimate stress-buster, this year we’ll see showers of all types raising their relaxation game – rain, fountain, massage and steam – transforming the bathroom to a 24-hour spa while boosting metabolism and stimulating the immune system along the way.

Personal Touch

Bathroom manufacturers are now providing a 360 degree service that offers customers a bespoke way to finish a room to exact specifications including furniture, mirrors and even brass-ware. You can choose the length of console furniture, tops and mirrors and even personalised brass-wear with your names, initials or a family crest. Cabinets can be cleverly concealed within bathroom walls giving the impression of a mirror only.

Digital Tech

Smart Water technology enables the exact temperature and volume of water coming out of taps to be controlled at the touch of a button. In addition, there are Apps to provide entertainment and information in the bathroom. Mirror Apps projects news items, imaged and emails onto the bathroom mirror.

No Scratch

Smooth, non-porous materials that hardly attract the dirt can be a winning way to achieving minimal cleaning effort. Enameled steel is particularly resistant to abrasion, scratching and impact, as well as being resistant to cosmetic and bath additives. Stainless steel is also hard wearing and sealed glass is hygienic and scratch-proof. A special glaze for ceramic creates a smooth, non-porous surface that’s easy to clean.

Guest Post: The Future in the Past - Steampunk

Steampunk

When I was young, grafting on a swooping fin here and a ray there was always a grand way to make something look like it was from the future. Novels that I read, such as H.G. Wells's pseudo-scientific The Time Machine had triggered many illustrators and filmmakers to invent visual languages that could illustrate the next century; artists and designers are perpetually obsessed with screwball futures. This obsession, Steampunk, is a fractured look back at what might have been if only . . . a merging of the old and new into some picturesque hybrid form.

Steampunk itself heavily references historical precedent, blending elements of the late 19^th century, as well as the Edwardian era’s eccentric design tradition, with some of the pragmatism of industrial style. Whatever the era they prefer, steampunks share common interests: they all relish retro-looking technology, and the romanticism and richness of the long ago. Steampunk aesthetic uses that environment as a starting point for an exploration of our era, so it becomes a sci-fi-like alternate take on history, and a nostalgic look at a reality that never really existed.

Recently, the Swedish design team Front were asked by the German firm Axor to reimagine shower equipment, so in addition to the simple functionality of the fixtures, they also displayed all the parts usually hidden behind walls, including copper piping, valves, couplings and funnels, creating a sculptural presence, and Steampunk aesthetic. They challenged conventions by contrasting metal structures with elegant and complex angles, to evoke elements of an elegant laboratory.

So, is Steampunk here to stay? – With Steampunk design very comfortable borrowing from the past and reinventing the present, the style open to future re-imagining, be it in interior design, or in more functional products.

Into the Future

At a trade show in 1996 I remember seeing plans for a futuristic kitchen which seemed ludicrous at the time. The predictions were jaw dropping, but looking back it was spot on with almost all of the technology in use today.

TECH-TASTIC

In March I wrote about linking smartphones to appliances, for instance, programming your washing machine while you’re out or having a camera in your fridge allowing you to view its contents while you do the weekly shop. Well, now you can program your coffee machine from your phone too. If you’re having a dinner party you can take orders on your smartphone and let the machine do the rest. You still need to put the cup under the spout and carry the coffee to the table though, but probably not for long!

At the high end of the market, companies aren’t charging a premium for this technology. Generally it comes as standard. Also, the ability to upgrade the software in your appliance via your smartphone rather than buying a new appliance every time technology advances is on the horizon.

INTELLIGENT HOBS

Induction hobs have moved on too, and instead of having designated spaces for your pans, the new flexi induction hobs form Neff and Siemens are intelligent enough to know where you’re putting a pan and will heat up that area. They are high in kilowatt usage though, so it would be wise to get a kitchen specialist in to check you have enough power

GREEN CREDENTIALS

Extractor fans are no longer ceiling mounted or even pop up. They are cleverly integrated into the hob. Take a look at Elica who are leading the way. Some hobs even have built in irrigation systems to collect the water extracted which can then be used for watering your bang on trend indoor herb garden.

GIANT WORK TOPS

Corian is making a comeback too. The trend for double width extensions on houses results in enormous kitchen/living spaces, and with that comes the issue of oversized work surfaces. Traditional materials like granite and quartz are restrictive in terms of size, so potentially there would be a visible join. Corian solves this problem by creating supersized sleek and seamless surfaces.

Latest trends: Bronze and Brass

For the longest time, chrome and stainless steel have been the face of metal work in the kitchen and bathroom, proving a durable, attractive and cost effective finish. Other colours have been few and far between but the latest vogue is in the golden tones of bronze and brass materials.

Previously featured on this blog, our regular guests SplinterWorks pioneered the look in their work, a Dark + Brass kitchen. Combined with Xyocleaf Maya Bronze cabinetry the kitchen flaunts the brasswork of the handles and between the cabinets showing what is really possible using these new materials. Without a doubt, the kitchen would not look nearly as stunning using traditional methods.

Effective lighting aided by the skylight enables the bronze to shine creating a friendly space during day time and a more mysterious atmosphere at night.

Interior designer and glass genius Lillian Gorbachincky uses Brass and glass to stun and amaze in her kitchen, 'La Muse™'. The shimmering back wall fills the kitchen with light, assisted by the custom bronze light fixtures. The breakfast bar surface and side are made of Gorbachincky's own Cosmopolitan glass - based in Brooklyn, these guys are in a league of their own when it comes to fantastic glass effects.

Back to bathrooms, and our favourites AXOR by Hansgrohe are producing the beautiful Axor One shower thermostat. The product is available in 15 polished or brushed PVD finishes in addition to a selection of options ranging from dimension editing and name or logo inscription when the AXOR MANUFAKTUR department is involved. This blog would not be complete without mentioning Samuel Heath. Since 1820 the company has designed and manufactured fine brass fittings in the UK, with all of the many processes involved under one roof. Craftsmanship and integrity have been core principles of the company since the first machines started turning at the company's factory in Birmingham. Branching out from these main values, the company realises their visions through a variety of ranges each with a unique set of ideals.

The Royal Crown Derby range is a unique collaboration by two of the world’s most celebrated designers and manufacturers bringing together 460 years of combined creative heritage. The attention to detail inherent in the hand finished brassware and exquisite hand moulded and intricately decorated fine bone china, exemplifies the very best of British design and manufacturing.

SplinterWorks are no strangers to our blog, and today they have taken a break from stunning interior design to bring us something truly different...

The Jenson Button Trust Triathlon Trophy

Earlier this year we were honoured to be invited to design The Jenson Button Trust charity triathlon trophy. The event took place last weekend and was the biggest to date, in support of Cancer Research UK. We are now thrilled to unveil the finished piece.

The JB Trust logo engraved in the gold face of the trophy.

Lined with gold and wrapped in carbon fibre, the sculptural, elegant form, propels the trust's logo from its core. We worked with carbon fibre pioneers EPM Technology to create a trophy that championed sporting innovation and merit.

Now in its fourth year, the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon is a true family event. It includes not only one of Britain’s best triathlon competitions but also a buzzing event village with prizes presented by Jenson. For families and spectators there will be a host of activities throughout the park and live music in the heart of the event village.

The Jenson Button Trust aims to raise as much money as possible during it’s partnership with Cancer Research UK. Our ambition is to fund pioneering work to help accelerate research and beat cancer sooner. Jenson Button and Cancer Research UK both believe we will beat cancer. The more research we do, the sooner that day will come.

No doubt this stunning work demonstrates SplinterWorks' ability to design truly anything, especially when it involves carbon fibre! We hope to see many more quality creations from the team in future.

Bath or Shower?

This article is written from the comfort of my bath; I have a green tea and my evening meal beside me, News at Ten on a TV above. My bath is the perfect way to relax, while catching up with everything else. There's a fantastic hydrotherapy system in the bath which gives a wonderful, therapeutic effect. The system also cools body temperature by reducing transfer of heat, by providing a layer of air that surrounds the body, upon immersion; I find it particularly useful during warmer spells, as it's still possible still enjoy my bath and get out feeling more refreshed than when I got in.

Origins

As late as the early 1960s many homes in Britain did not have a bathroom, let alone a shower. Fifty years later, our bathrooms have become an important room in our homes — a sanctuary to lock ourselves away from the fast pace of life. It’s now commonplace to find televisions, heated floors and designer towel rails, creating a space to relax and rewind.

The Modern Shower

In 1767 Englishman William Feetham invented the first modern shower; they didn't become common until the late 20th century, but, now, are they really overtaking the bath in the public's preference? A shower is certainly time-saving and more environmentally friendly: a typical bath holds around 200 litres of water; you could shower for twenty two minutes with the same amount of water. Nevertheless, it is hard to beat a bath for soothing away aches and stress.

I posted a questionnaire asking ‘Would you prefer a bath or a shower?’ on my Facebook page Lisa Melvin Design and had more than 100 answers back (a big thank-you to all who replied). Overall the response was mostly expressed by ‘a shower to wash and a bath to chill’, along with: ‘showers for weekdays, baths for weekends. Also popular was, 'bath for the children - couldn’t do without one!’ and ‘people with small children need a bath, as do people who can’t use a shower easily or can’t get water in their ears’.
My clients often wonder whether or not they should remove the bath and just have a lovely, large shower instead. Most people insist they only shower and have maybe only bathed once or twice in the past twelve months, 'so why bother keeping the bath'? I always point out that the minute you no longer have a bath is the minute you desperately want one! — A certain client had a small, compact bathroom and really didn’t use her bath at all. She longed for a large shower cubicle, and we put in a fabulous shower enclosure that she loved very much - until she was eight months pregnant, and was desperate for a relaxing bath to soothe her back.

I am with the majority - I absolutely love taking a bath but could not be without my shower. The time I spend in the shower is my idea-making and thinking time. If I really had to choose, the shower would win, out of convenience and speed, but I would really miss my bath.

Press Release | New Work | Dark + Brass: A Kitchen

We were commissioned by a visionary property developer to create the kitchen for a contemporary home built within the grounds of a restored 19^th Century church in London. They recognized the opportunity to create a hidden gem and so called us in to create an extraordinary space that would appeal to discerning clients looking for something out of the ordinary.

Their architects designed the room to maximise the limited access to natural light, with an atrium courtyard garden and skylights, and had suggested the kitchen be along one of the walls. Working alongside the interior designer we proposed that the kitchen should be more dramatic and brought out from the corner to become a commanding central feature.

It was important the room would function well for entertaining, so to help people move comfortably around the large room, we designed an arc-shaped island unit which directs people around the outside of the main workings of the kitchen, to the cinema room behind.

The island was ergonomically designed to incorporate a bar height area on the outside and, with the kitchen one step up on a raised floor, the interior is at perfect counter top height. This subtle device not only makes the kitchen centre stage, but opens up the view of the garden from the kitchen. A champagne sink is recessed into the island, creating a relaxed bar for entertaining.

Another architectural detail we were keen to exploit was the beautiful skylight. We aligned the high kitchen cabinetry at the rear of the space exactly with the edge of the skylight, capitalizing on the natural light and creating a pleasing balance within the room.

We integrated a couple of clandestine features to keep the design as seamless as possible: The door that leads to the cinema room is designed to look like a continuation of the cabinetry in wood and brass. This allowed us to run the kitchen right up to the doorframe, and retain a cohesive look. The secret door adds a fun twist and a little frisson of glamour!

We also created a hidden walk-in pantry behind the hob, which in our opinion, is a crucial element to incorporate if you desire a tidy and uncluttered space. An extractor is invisibly incorporated above the brass splashback behind the hob area, with recycling bins and a tall capacity dishwasher, integrated into the island unit.

The brass trim that defines the cabinetry in bands, not only aesthetically breaks up the block of cabinets, it is also lines in the interior of the pull handle to give definition, and a luxurious tactile feel upon opening.

The colour-way and finishes specified by the interior designer are Silestone blanco zeus worktop, Buster + Punch hardware, and cabinets in Xylocleaf Maya Bronze.

Magical Mirrors

Nothing opens up a bathroom like a mirror does. Often they can be overlooked as people reduce them to pure function, but the true beauty lies in their aesthetic qualities.

Often bathrooms are full of items competing for limited space, creating a dark and cramped room. New backlit LED mirrors open up possibilities for making the same space lighter and more open. The circular LED light is similar to a "Ring light", a piece of equipment often used in film to make the subject's face look extra bright and in focus. It really shows!

The power of design is most powerful when it comes from a unique product. At the heart of one off items is bespoke design. In this interview, I’ll be talking to Lisa Melvin, who has amassed a varied and impressive portfolio of custom works ranging from art work to bar stools to drinks cabinets.

When designing a bespoke item from a client's brief, you have a lot of freedom. What criteria and tools do you use to realise a client's vision?

The most important thing is always that the initial concept comes first before other restrictions. This is critical to the client getting what they want. Once we've established an initial plan, choosing materials is the main consideration, dependent on the nature of the creation, whether its outdoor or indoor, the level of sunlight exposure and the desired texture, colour etc. Harsher conditions call for more durable, commercial grade materials while kinder environments open up the possibilities of materials to use.

What products are you able to produce?

I love being able to use my design expertise in different fields, so I have completed many different projects in the past and I'm excited to see more new things in the future. I have done custom bar stools, to complement a kitchen and I've done the whole kitchen! Previously I have commissioned pieces of art for clients. I think the important part of design is that I am able to design for any clientele, private individuals, bluechip companies - anyone!

What are the stages of creation for a client?

After they first approach me, we sit down for an initial consultation where the client outlines their requirements. At this point, we'll both make sketches to share ideas, maybe improving or evolving the original concept. After this, I will go away and create some finer plans to share with the client. At every stage of this the client will have a real say in the result and that's the real beauty of bespoke design. As the design becomes more concrete, the manufacturing drawings are created and the production costs are calculated for the client. I would then produce accurate drawings for it to be made, the product is manufactured and then the client receives it!

What materials do you use?

I use such a wide variety of materials it really depends on the application. For indoor applications I have previously used Xylocleaf, Egger and natural wood. Part of the joy of bespoke design is the freedom to utilise fantastic components such as the swedish HAWA door systems in my custom drinks cabinet. I can use any material, budget and environment considering. Even luxury Swarovski crystals and porcelain make it into some designs.

exhibited by Splinter Works' Dark + Brass kitchen.

What has been your favourite work so far?

The secret drinks cabinet I produced has been my favourite. I love the idea of secret compartments in designs, what better way to achieve this than in a bespoke design! The final result was awesome, very James Bond-esque. It allowed me to incorporate some of my favourite details into the design. Not only does it have complete ambient LED lighting, I included a Fisher and Paykel CoolDrawer, with amazing versatility. Truly an entertainment piece!

Using different door fascias gives an interesting look. Being bespoke means it fills the space perfectly.

"Creating a clean VIP look is all down to the detail"

Designing the bespoke restrooms for a private entertainment venue means creating dramatic impact and flair with relatively few items. In this case, she combines spectacular glass mosaic tiles and Mapei glittery grout for an ultra stylish splashback and as a luxury backdrop in each cubicle.

Duravit Black Vero sanitaryware creates dramatic impact with a wonderful, durable finish which provides a protective layer to keep it clean. The striking black basins in both wash areas were teamed with Grohe's wall mountaed Ondus 3-hole mixer in velvet black. To add to the feeling of luxury Molton Brown soap dispensers were included. Corian surfaces create the perfect finishing touch - in a bold, fuschia pink for ladies and calming grey for the men. Back-lit LED mirrors create a halo effect and add a touch of elegance to this design and provide plenty of room for high guest numbers.

Grey Corian compliments the mosiac backdrop.

Subtle lighting generates a bright but relaxing ambiance perfect for a private venue. Sigma80 flushplates allow colour customisation, providing finishing touches to a 5 star look.

Home Connect

Thanks to Home Connect and functions like EasyStart and FlexStart, washing machines, dishwashers and dryers can now perform their tasks with even more precision and efficiency. When the EasyStart function is selected, for example, Home Connect first asks the consumer what type of tableware or fabric is to be handled and whether the process should run on a time-efficient or energy-efficient basis. The app then proposes the appropriate program.

The FlexStart setting is especially suitable for homes that cover part of their electricity needs via their own energy supply, for example, with a photovoltaic system on the roof. As soon as the program is active, it reverts to these cheaper energy sources. If the decentralized electricity is insufficient to get the selected appliance up and running within a set time window, the power required is covered by conventional sources.

But Home Connect can do even more. The app now also lets the user take a look in the fridge while away from home, for example, by means of a camera installed in the fridge. In other words, if they're at the supermarket and want to know if there are still any tomatoes left in the vegetable compartment or if more eggs are needed for breakfast, they can check easily and conveniently via smartphone.

Depending on the setting selected by the user, Home Connect sends a push message to indicate that the washing is ready or the dishwasher tabs are running low. Tips for storing food correctly can be called up, as can instructions for expert preparation of individual specialty coffee creations. A host of coffee specialties can be conjured up with the Coffee World function, from an Australian flat white to a Spanish café cortado.

Pizza fans will love the Home Connect The ideal program settings for each pizza can be sent to the oven via a bar code scanner using the camera in the smartphone or tablet. The appliance immediately and automatically selects the right settings for temperature and preparation time.

Gallery Showroom Open Evening

On the 9th of December 2015, I held a cooking demonstration event in the Rugby gallery showroom.

Professionally serving food was the lovely Karen Walker who treated the guests to a fine evening of steamed salmon, fried halloumi and delicious salad. The evening was a fantastic success. We were incredibly excited to showcase our new revamped design-led kitchen studio and it provided an excellent opportunity to treat our clients and friends.

Where the magic happened! Karen demonstrated the Siemens collection to bring together an extravagant menu for our guests.

The design-led kitchen features a double sided fireplace, and a fish tank- see our 'Life within the Living Space' article to see more.

The evening concluded with a Q&A session from Karen regarding the features she had used throughout the evening. Many guests were impressed with the result of steam cooking which they had never tried themselves.

Natural Beauty

Fallen out of love with your bathroom? New trends for 2016 will turn a woeful washroom into a pampering palace.

It's all about thinking naturally in bathrooms for 2016. Setting the style are natural materials which are making a strong comeback, much to my delight. I prefer to use natural materials wherever practical. I love the romantic notion that each piece of wood or slab of granite has a history. Using a natural material in your own home allows you to admire and cherish it daily.

Wood burning stoves is a perfect example. For 2016 they're moving out of the living room to create a sensual, beguiling ambience while you wallow in the bath. My latest project incorporates beautiful double sided contemporary woodburning stoves positioned between the master bedroom and ensuite bathroom - so you can relax infront of a roaring fire all tucked up in bed or luxuriating in bubbles. Sheer bliss!

The creative use of these new wood burners shows how bathroom design is about so much more than pure practicality. Style is king, as can be seen by some of the collaborations between the bathroom industry and the best designers in the world. Among the most renowned is Philippe Stark who's latest designs include the beautiful Stark V basin mixer. There is also an exciting partnership between Axor and London designers Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, famed for the 2012 Olympic torch. Axor One makes a bold statement in your shower and radiates majestic tranquility with its flat shape, soft curves and generous proportions. All functions are concentrated in one central unit from which you can control the showers simply by pressing the relevant paddles.

Another British designer Tom Dixon has teamed up with Bisazza to launch Cementtiles. Inspired by London's architectural landmarks, the range of handmade tiles is available in two shapes, square and hexagonal. I also love Alegna wooden baths and basins free-standing model. Its attractive design and high-quality workmanship as well as the natural warmth of the wood make it the central eye-catching element in every bathroom. Alegna's bathtubs are manufactured using the best possible materials and feature carefully selected wood veneers compressed together under high pressure and completely saturated with resin - ensuring easy upkeep.

Also new for 2016, Duravit's Cape Cod bathroom range includes a solid real wood and white high gloss combination by Philippe Stark incorporated a one-of-a-kind basin console and shelves for a stunningly beautiful elegant ensemble. Finally, I must mention the innovation of a shower toilet first launched in 1980 which has revolutionized bathrooms across Japan for nearly three decades. The Toto WASHLET has improved hygiene standards with its warm water cleansing system and air purification and automatic functions. It's becoming a must-have in London's top five star hotels - and is high on the wish list of my clients too.

This kitchen was part of a complete barn refurbishment for a young couple, Lisa Melvin Design worked alongside Springburn Joinery who created the beautiful Slide & Fold doors for the kitchen, along with all the other joinery requirements for the project. The couple were looking for a kitchen with the wow factor. They love to entertain so this needed to be a practical party space - they also have dogs so the flooring needed to accommodate muddy paws! The clients saw a kitchen on display at Gallery Showroom that they liked. The kitchen was ‘The Entertainer’, where the island unit looks like it is floating above a mirrored plinth, it accommodates every entertaining need with an eye catching bank of built in appliances.
As the kitchen is in a barn with original beams, we wanted to highlight natural materials. A textured slate wall was chosen, which adds a natural, yet modern touch to the overall kitchen and creates a dramatic contrast with the Silestone Blanco Zeus Extreme white worktop. The Vitra Neoquarzite tiles in anthracite on the floor add further contrast to the white worktops and have a practical, durable finish, suitable for the pet dogs.

Ultra contemporary Keller Fuente units in a striking, white, high-gloss finish, bounce light around the space and complement the wooden beams. As the clients enjoy hosting parties, LED colour-changing lights from Sycamore Lighting were installed in the plinth and in beading at the base of the slate wall. A spectrum of colours enables the clients to choose one for every occasion and makes a strong style statement. This use of colour also brings warmth to an otherwise contemporary neutral palette. A distinctive, hanging, Elica Sienna hood had to be worked around the existing visible timber joists. This sits above a sleek,
designer Kuppersbusch hob for a seamless finish. High performance Neff ovens make cooking a breeze and a Fisher & Paykel double fridge freezer provides plenty of storage when entertaining. The Fisher & Paykel double DishDrawer makes clearing up afterwards quick and easy. The wet zone features a Tekka Linea undermount sink in stainless steel, a favourite material for chefs, and an Astracast Professional tap completes the look with a handy InSinkErator added in for grinding food down.

Design Thinking is my concept of the thought process from a viewpoint of those who will use the space rather than those who build it or decorate it.
Interior Design has little to do with interior decoration which is often misunderstood. The latter is the art of display of decorative items. Interior design is a thought process for those who live, work and relax inside a building, plane, boat etc. and how the occupants move around within that space safely and comfortably. Therefore a designer must not only have the skill for space planning but also be cognisant of legislation for the buildings use, building protective orders, weight restraints in product specification and building regulations for example when positioning vents, water and waste supply, electrical sockets and switches etc. Sometimes two correctly specified products in the wrong position create an illegal installation.
Pretty is not design, pretty is the final adornment of an intelligent and thoughtful plan process. So I call it 'intelligent design'. I am also aware that without budget restriction we can all create beautiful interiors. Creating one on a tight budget is where a good designer really excels and adds value, it's a bigger challenge. It is important for the reputation of a product or brand manufacturer that the specifying 'design professional' has the measured and tested knowledge. Failure to correctly specify a product fit-for-purpose and performance means even the best performing product installed in the wrong project will not work properly. This often damages a brands reputation. End-users will not consider the bad performance of a product as being the wrong model for the task, they simply see a branded product with a good reputation under-performing and make their own conclusions.

Therefore allowing anyone to simply apply a badge marked 'interior designer' to a project allows that individual or firm an opportunity to damage not only your reputation but the industry at large. I resent that as I'm badged to the same negativity by an industry wide bad reputation. I promote standards across the board of interiors, that naturally includes learning and teaching in performance and conduct, but particularly advice. it is the advice a designer sells that is the only measure of competence value a client understands. It is therefore imperative that competence is also of a measured independent standard. Again, until 2011 the British interior design profession did not have a standard to test the knowledge of a practicing design professional to practice ...a basic trading standard to practice. SBID identified this gap and signed an agreement in 2011 with the twenty year old National Council Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) based in Washington DC, USA. The NCIDQ with SBID has been preparing to convert its two day test certification for relevance to the British market, it is currently being translated at British test centres. This qualification is expected to be released in 2014/5 and I am delighted to say that SBID will be representing the NCIDQ competence test to ensure it is fit for British standards and relevance for all interior designers (both with and without a university degree). Later in association with SBID the test will be rolled out across Europe.

Flat Pack with Soul

We speak to Mat Hibbert, from Mat Hibbert Designs about his new range of Furniture....

The concept of my new Flat pack range is to create beautiful solid wood pieces of furniture, with simple but timeless designs and made from very high quality, hand selected pieces of timber, and in a fair price range. There's no real reason why you can't have nice design and quality at more affordable price ranges. As designers we just need to think a bit harder. The "flat pack" saves on transport cost and ease of moving around.

An incredibly simple but strong form of bridle joint has been used to create a long lasting and also very aesthetically pleasing joint both the hall console table, and the coffee tables. The pieces come in three sections and takes approximately 5 minutes to put together (it really is so simple to construct, but will last a life time instead of a summer).

I have big plans to expand the range as well, so stay tuned.

Timeless Bathroom Design

Neutral colours and selected detail can go a long way. Edges and features highlighted with mosaics stand out in a minimalistic bathroom - in this example, the wetroom area is striped to highlight the Hansgrohe shower set. Next to the Waters bath there is a cubby hole, also lined with mosaic. If used judiciously, small details can speak louder than grand ones- giving you a look that'll never go out of style.
