It's Good to be Back!

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all having a great summer! Summer school has been out for me for a couple of weeks now so I have some new paintings to post. First up is Tobasco Study, a 6 inch by 9 inch oil on canvas. I have been saving this bottle for weeks so that I could paint it and you will be seeing it again with more attention given to the label details when I have a free day and I am feeling particularly OCD. Next is Pelligrino, an 8x10 Oil on Canvas... Again, it will show up in the future as well. Finally, I have "Primary Colors Abstract", a 24 inch by 36 inch Oil on canvas. I will tell you in advance that the most difficult thing I have discovered about photographing my paintings is accurately capturing the shade of blue and that is true here. I spent quite a while tweaking the colors in the editing software and still could not budge the blue in the right direction. Instead of the lovely ultramarine blue that you see in the painting, the actual blue is an equally lovely pthalo turquoise; i.e. the blue is more blue/green than it appears in the photograph while the other colors in this painting are accurately represented, at least on my monitor :). I painted this one during a bout of insomnia this week and I realize the name is, well, lame. It came out without a name so I am still mulling it over. If you have any ideas, let me know. In the meantime, if you are in town this painting will be on display at the Charlotte Art League beginning August 5th so you can see the turquoise in person. Enjoy!

Up this week I have two new paintings to post. First is "Peugeot Coffee Mill in Red". This painting is a 5x7 inch Oil on Gessoed hardboard and I had a great time painting it. Hello Everyone!

Things have been crazy and I haven't painted in almost three weeks. I took the time over spring break to get myself REALLY organized. There isn't a stack of papers left anywhere in my house and now I have a great system to keep it that way! All of this will help me produce more paintings and go to graduate school (and produce great papers :) )at the same time so, thank you for sticking with me. That being said, I have three paintings to post this week. I painted all of these on a hot pink underpainting and I like the effect! First up is "Meyer Lemon", a 5 inch x 5 inch oil on canvas, Next we have "Winding Road" a 4 inch x 6 inch oil on canvas and finally "Around the Bend", a 4 inch x 5 inch oil on canvas. I painted these last two for the German landscape challenge over at Daily Paintworks. Enjoy! I will be painting this weekend so stay tuned for new stuff. New Dailies!

Hello All! I have some new dailies to post. First up I have Apple Blossoms 1. The apple tree outside of my house was in full bloom and I always think it is so beautiful so I snipped a couple of blossoms and brought them inside to paint. It has an abstract quality that I enjoy. I had so much fun that I placed the blossom in some water and painted it again the next day. A little more detailed that time. I call it Apple Blossoms 2 :). Finally I have "vine babies". I painted vine babies for the DPW One Stroke Challenge and it was somehow overlooked in my last posting so I am adding it to this one. I hope you enjoy and that all is fantastic in your world! Hello Everyone! This week I have three new paintings to post and they have a theme. It seems common these days that I see the most spectacular sunsets when I am driving somewhere. I've tried snapping pictures on my phone but that just doesn't work very well either for capturing the vista or for my driving so I have settled on studying the sunsets as much as I can at stoplights and coming back to them in my head later. So, here are some of the results. First is "Storm Chaser", a 4 inch x 6 inch oil on canvas. That was a spectacular sunset behind a moving storm. Second is "Abstract Vista" a 5 inch x 7 inch oil on canvas. I really enjoyed painting this abstract! I think Tuesdays may be abstract day from now on. Both "Storm Chaser" and "Abstract Vista" are for sale. Next, as a learning technique, I put together a portfolio of other artists paintings of sunsets that were successful and I am painting them on a much smaller scale to strengthen my sunset painting execution. "Sunset Study 1" is the first and it is a 6 inch x 6 inch oil on canvas. Consequently, these "sunset studies" will not be for sale but I will find good homes for them :) Finally, "Ethereal Egg" was painted with the sun setting behind it and was a subject in an earlier post. It is currently up for auction with all of the proceeds from it's sale going to benefit the Japanese Red Cross Society. You can bid on it here. The auction for my painting ends Saturday the 26th so go bid on it, tell your friends, and support a good cause. There are many other wonderful paintings up for auction as well so go have a look at Daily Paintworks "Help Japan" challenge.

Hello Everyone!

I am so proud I could crow. Last Friday, my painting "Brookshire Water Tower" received third place honors in the Charlotte Art League's regional juried show. The juror Philip Mullen had the following comment about "Brookshire Water Tower": "This painting has a clear focus and it is filled with inner light. There are no tricks. The quality of the painting rests entirely on the artists' ability to make the work have life via color, placement and paint quality. Note the loose paint on the side of the water tower. The real subject of this painting may be the wonderful light." That is exactly what I was going for. I think this was the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen and it was a reflection on a rusty water tower. This painting has been in my head for a couple of years and I was excited to get it out and onto a canvas. You can see more about the Spring Into Art juried exhibit at the Charlotte Art League's site here. Brookshire Water Tower is 24 inches x 36 inches, Acrylic on Canvas and it is available for purchase. My small daily painting "Still Life With Egg Shells" was also accepted as part of the juried show which is still quite an honor! I have a few new posts. First is "Two Perspectives": I really enjoyed the color composition of this one! Next is "Red Plum": this was my most realistic painting of this series. I painted it with a round brush instead of the brights I have been favoring lately. The next two are "Orange on Orange" and "Hazy Orange": I painted these on consecutive days. I guess I was just in that kind of mood. :) Finally, We have "School Crossing" because that is what this composition made me think of when it was completed. I know it's orange slices but that's how my mind works. These paintings are all 5 inches by 5 inches and Oil on Canvas. Currently all are available so email me to purchase. Enjoy!

I was reading another artists blog (Carol Marine. She is just fabulous!) and she was talking about how she will see flashes of paintings in her mind just before she goes to sleep. I see flashes of paintings too. They happen so quickly that they leave only a vague impression of what they look like. It is more of a feeling than a picture but as I thought about it I realized that my fleeting impressions were of abstract paintings. I thought this was odd considering it isn't what I normally paint. I wondered if my subconscious was trying to tell me something so I decided to paint an abstract composition in blue for the Charlotte Art League's February Show "The Blues". It was a very intuitive painting and I had a blast painting it! "Nebula"

is a 30 inch x 30 inch original Acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas. It will be on display for the entire month of February at the Charlotte Art League gallery on Camden. Go visit it and maybe enjoy a Phat Burrito or Price's Chicken while you are there. Let me know if you go and what you think!

After a long break from painting, I am back. This painting was actually my second coming back. The first one didn't turn out, sort of like the first pancake never turns out. I call it the sacrificial pancake. You have to wreck one to get the temperature and timing just right but once you do, you are cooking!
