LISD Podcast #3 - McAuliffe Elementary assembly

Lewisville ISD and Friends of Texas Public Schools (FTPS) recently teamed up on two events to celebrate the legacy left by Christa McAuliffe, the teacher/astronaut who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion on January 28, 1986.On Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m., the new documentary “Christa McAuliffe: Reach for the Stars” was viewed as part of McAuliffe Elementary’s PTA meeting. In addition, the fifth-grade choir performed and a photograph autographed by Christa was donated to the school by alumnus Jared LeBon.On Friday, January 27 at 10 a.m., students participated in an assembly to honor Christa McAuliffe as well as celebrate the achievements of public education. As part of the program, one of McAuliffe’s Elementary teachers who attended the school as a child recalled Christa’s remarks on public education given shortly before her death. FTPS presented the school with a Flag of Learning and Liberty, and students sang a special edition of America the Beautiful .A traveling 7-foot display of the Flag of Learning and Liberty was also unveiled. The display will be left at the school for the duration of the school year. This display features the flag that Christa brought on the space shuttle and was recovered from the wreckage.LISD hosted the events in partnership with FTPS and sponsored in part by SHW Group.
